Book Description
The name Luis Barragan evokes images of Latin American modernism-brightly colored plain surfaces set off against lush foliage. His 1,250-acre Gardens of El Pedregal, begun in 1945 on the lava fields of south of Mexico City, were dotted with houses and plazas, fountains and ponds, cacti and pepper trees. Barragan considered El Pedregal his most important project, and critics have described the houses and gardens there as a turning point in Mexican architecture. This book examines El Pedregal's program and form, its representation in architect-commissioned photographs and advertising, and its place within contemporary discourses on cultural identity, design and place, and suburbanization. Like our highly acclaimed Revolution of Form, Luis Barragan's Gardens of El Pedregal offers an in-depth analysis of this now mostly destroyed project through original documents, drawings, color and black-and-white photography, and critical examinations of the design process.

Luis Barragan's Gardens of El Pedregal.......2001-10-25
This is a remarkable book, engaging and forceful, scrupulously researched and boldly imaginative. Keith Eggener's reading of Barragan's Gardens probes the crucial area of cultural studies with energy and precision, offering a sizable number of fresh ideas and unsuspected connections. A rare achievement; Eggener's study is not only an impressive and welcome contribution to the field of Modern architecture, but also a great pleasure to read.

Colonial Houses: The Historic Homes of Williamsburg
ASIN: 0764305980 |
Book Description
Lavishly illustrated with over two hundred color photographs, The Virginia House presents a full survey of Tidewater Virginia homes constructed between 1640 and 1830. The buildings range in size from tiny cottages to the great plantation house set in its formal composition of flanking outbuildings and gardens. The emphasis is on the small dwellings, which are affordable yet full of history; and much more suitable for the requirements of twentieth century life. Intricate pictures, floor plans, and details will enable the reader to buy or build his own Virginia dream house, or renovate his current home to project a genteel Virginian image. Personal interviews with the owners of these fascinating homes highlight this engaging, informative volume, which will assuredly expand the popular conception of Virginia homes.

SINCE THIS INCREDIBLY WORTHY AND LOVELY BOOK WAS FIRST PUBLISHED CIRCA 1984, I HAVE BOUGHT AND GIVEN AWAY MANY COPIES.
I CAN ONLY COMPARE IT TO THE FINE SERIES ON VIRGINIA HOMES THAT WAS WRITTEN BY EMMIE FERGUSON FARRAR BACK IN THE 1950'S.
ANNE MANNINGTON FAULCONER POSSESSES THE GOOD COMBINATION OF A FINE HISTORIAN AND THE GIFT OF AN AESTHETIC'S EYE.
EVERY HOUSE REPRESENTED IN THIS BOOK IS A JEWEL, CHOSEN NOT BECAUSE IT IS FAMOUS OR FANCY, BUT BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS CERTAIN, UNIQUE TRAITS THAT ARE PECULIAR TO A CERTAIN HOUSE THAT
IS KNOWN AS "THE VIRGINIA HOUSE".
THOSE TRAITS ARE NOT SPECIFIC IN STYLE OR DESIGN;
INDEED, THESE HOUSES
ARE QUITE VARIED AND RANGE FROM THE VERY GRAND TO THE VERY SIMPLE.
WHAT ANNE MANNINGTON FAULCONER DOES BEST WITH HER BOOK IS TO LET THE HOUSES SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
SHE PRESENTS THE FLOORPLANS AND THE ELEVATIONS AND THE SIMPLEST DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH HOUSE AND ITS HISTORY. THE READER IS COMPELLED TO ADMIRE THE 'OLD WAY OF SEEING' AND WONDER HOW WE COULD HAVE POSSIBLY DEGENERATED TO THE MCMANSION MENTALITY OF TODAY.

Internet Hijinks At It's Best!.......2005-03-15
Reality Check comes from Rikki and Tavisha Simons, the creative team behind their latest series Shutterbox. While Shutterbox is a Goth Romance series, Reality Check is a much more light and cheerful comic. In volume 1, we are introduced to 10th grader Collen Meeks, a geek who longs to access the Virtual Internet System (VIS) in the year 2012. After receiving his True Virtual Reality Helmet (TVR), Collen finally manages to access the VIS...until his cat Catreece also logs on as well. In Real Time, Catreece is a small, cute, annoying cat...on the VIS, she's like the annoying sibling you wish you didn't have! Thus, all sorts of crazy adventures (and misadventures) occur for our computer nerd and his bubbly, ditzy cat.
One thing that stands out when you dive into Reality Check is the wonderful art. Orginally, RC was published in color (the color edition has long been out of print, but you can still find new/used copies at certain stores). TokyoPop has decided to publish RC in their standered B&W format, but it still doesn't take away the amazing detail that Tavisha has done! All the characters (major and minor), backgrounds, ect. are full of life and personality. You can help turning the page to see what they are up to next!
I also like the story that the Simons have written. It creates a fun enviroment that possible might happen in the next several years. The story line never lets you down! It makes you keep on reading to find out how Collen and Catreece will get out of thier scraps on the VIS. Also, all the characters don't have 2D personality, so they are easily likeable and charming!
Plus, as an added bonus, this volume includes are nice gallery of the Simons concept art for the RC series, a treat for fans and newbies alike!
So if you enjoied Shutterbox, give Reality Check a try...it's just a fascinating and great as SB. For anyone wanting to see what American-based manga is all about, the Simons are the perfect team to go to!
OUTSTANDING!!!.......2004-07-08
This is a great read. It takes your standard, boring, overthinking guy, and makes him deal with a high-tech world that everyone, even cats, can deal with better. It is hilarious seeing him deal with situations that he and his cat, Catreece, stumble into.

Book Description
In 1985, Frederic C. Lane and Reinhold C. Mueller published the magisterial Money and Banking in Medieval and Renaissance Venice, Volume 1: Coins and Moneys of Account. Now, after ten years of further research and writing, Reinhold Mueller completes the work that he and the late Frederic Lane began.
The history of money and banking in Venice is crucial to an understanding of European economic history. Because of its strategic location between East and West, Venice rapidly rose to a position of preeminence in Mediterranean trade. To keep trade moving and credit available from London to Constantinople and beyond, Venetian merchants and bankers created specialized financial institutions to serve private entrepreneurs and public administrators: deposit banks, foreign exchange banks, the grain office, and a bureau of the public debt. This new volume clarifies Venice's pivotal role in Italian and international banking and finance. It also sets banking--and panics--in the context of more generalized and recurrent crises involving territorial wars, competition for markets, and debates over interest rates and the question of usury.
"The single aspect that most characterizes Venetian history and historiography is the dominant role of the state in the life of the city and the symbiosis between public and private sectors of the economy, between public and private interests....A primary concern of civil authorities was to create an atmosphere of competitive opportunity on the Rialto conducive to investment, that is, to the influx of money and goods, their turnover in Venice, and their eventual outflow."--From The Venetian Money Market

Risky Business: The Financing of Mercantile Activity in Medieval and Renaissance Venice.......2006-06-08
In the 1200s, Venice, considered as the birthplace of modern capital-based enterprise, was a prosperous imperial power governed by a commerce-oriented oligarchy. The city-state's convenient marriage with the sea allowed Venetian businessmen to cultivate merchant traffic in the Eastern world, thereby paving the way for Venice to gain undisputed mercantile supremacy in the Levant. Venice's economic ascendancy was immeasurably attributable to the Republic's dynamic money market, which channeled the capital surplus of Venice's citizens into speculative ventures. From this ferment came significant financial innovations such as deposit banking, the giro payment system, and tradeable government debt. This book, with its trove of business microhistories detailing, among others, recurrent convulsions in the Venetian banking sector during medieval and Renaissance times, helps fill in the lacunae of our understanding of the economic history of the Western world. Mueller's command of the scholarship on Venetian economic history provides valuable context, and helps provide answers to questions such as: how did Venice and its economic system flourish at a time when wars and plagues continually roiled the geopolitical landscape?

The best book about Children's Education Ever Written.......1997-03-21
A Little Child Shall Lead Them; Hopeful Parenting in a
Confused World is really the best book that is out there
about children, about parenting, about every and any aspect
on children. We live in a very confused world. There is so
little good and helpful stuff out there. Dr. Spock and
Dr. James Dobson, Focus of the Family are getting a little
out of date and stale. That is why: "A Little Child Shall
Lead Them" is such a refreshing change. Boy your mouth will

are raving about this book. Get your copy now. It is available at l-800-521-8011

A small treasure, unpretentious and transcendent........1997-02-24
"I Tell you a Mystery" is a beautiful book of surpassing
dignity and tenderness...I hope it will be widely read, not only by those who call themselves religious, and I hope it will be shared with children also. Although written with great simplicity of style, it is nonetheless a work of moral
mystery."

I want a copy by my bedside when my time comes.......1997-02-24
I have read many books about dying, but this is the one I would give to a person approaching death or facing bereavement. From start to finish it shines with hope.

A child led me.......1997-02-20
Oh great, I thought as my wife showed me the book she had just finished. Another 'how to' book I thought. But, something she said caught my attention and I figured I would at least start reading it. "If we did this, we would enjoy our children twice as much" she said.
I love my kids but, to be honest, there were times when I could think of more exciting things to do than reading 'The Biggest Bear" to them for the 56th time. Also, I often wondered just what I was doing, bringing up children in a world that was getting worse by the month it seemed. I began reading and found myself gripped. Here was... "advice" is a crude word. Perhaps "life" is better. I now have a new asset- my children show ME how to deal with the world. The childlike approach shows the way and I'm intent on protecting that in them-with new joy!
Tim Lamport, England
The only book on parenting that I ever read cover to cover!.......1997-02-20
As a busy professional and father of two lovable but occasionally exhausting boys, I look for books on effective parenting in almost every bookstore I step into --- and believe me, I've looked at a lot of books. Not surprisingly, these books seem to fall into two categories: either they are written by born-again Christians who gush sweetly about taking your child to Sunday school before he can even walk, or else they are so liberal that I feel as though maybe I shouldn't bother to try to be a good parent at all - apparently it won't help!
FINALLY - here is a book that makes sense. It is readable, to the point, honest and practical. It covers everything from diapers and pacifiers to sex and alcohol. Even my wife reads it from time to time - and this, from a woman who swore she would never pick up a parenting book again. If you really care about your kids, BUY THIS BOOK!

Book Description
First published in Peru in 1990, The Shining Path was immediately hailed as one of the finest works on the insurgency that plagued that nation for over fifteen years. A richly detailed and absorbing account, it covers the dramatic years between the guerrillas' opening attack in 1980 and President Fernando Belaunde's reluctant decision to send in the military to contain the growing rebellion in late 1982. Covering the strategy, actions, successes, and setbacks of both the government and the rebels, the book shows how the tightly organized insurgency forced itself upon an unwilling society just after the transition from an authoritarian to a democratic regime.
One of Peru's most distinguished journalists, Gustavo Gorriti first covered the Shining Path movement for the leading Peruvian newsweekly, Caretas. Drawing on hundreds of interviews and an impressive array of government and Shining Path documents, he weaves his careful research into a vivid portrait of the now-jailed Shining Path leader Abimael GuzmÂn, Belaunde and his generals, and the unfolding drama of the fiercest war fought on Peruvian soil since the Chilean invasion a century before.
Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners, uneven, but valuable testimony.......2004-11-07
The book by Gorriti I call an account rather than a history, because it conveys the movement in medias res, published in 1990 as the SL prepared to assault the capital, well before the 1992 capture of Guzmán and the persecution of Gorriti. In a 1998 preface, he briefly describes how, when president (elected in 1990) Alberto Fujimori staged a coup in 1992, he was arrested for his investigational journalism into the president and his `Creole Rasputin'-right before the arrest of Comrade Gonzalo. Gorriti managed to escape, files spirited out of the country too, and wound up in Panama working for its paper La Prensa. There, in 1996, he again faced his enemies as that government threatened him after he exposed a campaign financed by a Colombian drug cartel. He lived in his office for weeks, so as to foil police plans for his deportation. He emerged victorious, determined to uphold-in what he calls `cosmetic democracies', a free press.
At the time Gorriti compiled his tale of the SL, he had intended it as part of a three-volume work on the Peruvian Communist Party and its many alphabet-soup off-brands. This shows, as I was instantly immersed into a detailed narrative of unions, strikes, police machinations, and bureaucratic-to me-trivia. The book is probably not the first place to go for a quick introduction to the situation into which Sendero Luminoso stumbled. Gorriti clearly addresses an audience more familiar than I was with his country. Still, the gifts of his journalistic verve carried me through pages of departmental decisions into powerful chapters that highlighted the deadly nature of Guzmán's millenarian blend of Lenin, Marx, Mao, and messianic apocalypse that plunged-literally-much of his nation into darkness and resulted in at least 70,000 deaths, half of these at the hands of those who claimed to liberate the people from their imperialist oppressors. Half of these at the hands of those who claimed to protect the people from their revolutionary oppressors.
This is Gorriti's achievement. Eschewing the glib slogans of the left and the harsh vows of the right, he tracks the rise of the Shining Path from a few students tossing dynamite-a commodity readily nicked from the mines-to police reprisals and the spread of societal breakdown across the Andes and into, as the book ends, the edges of the city. What the history lacks is a context for foreign readers into which Guzmán and his ilk can be placed. Not even his birthdate is given; we know nothing here about his early schooling, what kind of a doctor he was, or how José Carlos Mariátegui founded the PCP, apparently in the 1930s. This information, which any academic editor would insist upon in a conventional manuscript, is, I assume, assumed by Gorriti not to matter or to be common knowledge to his Peruvian audience. Robin Kirk (who has written a lefty's view of Perú, The Monkey's Paw) translates what, given my knowledge of Spanish, I presume carries the uneven rhythms of the original prose, with its leaden `he said, she said' reports from within the corridors of power as well as its nearly cinematic vignettes of attacks and reprisals from the front.
Given these drawbacks, nonetheless, the uneasy mixture of dry minutiae about police intelligence sloshes against a potent additive. Excellent analyses of Sendero rhetoric and the emergence of his death cult demolish naive leftist praise for this deadly insurgency; on the other hand, the reprisals that the Senderos provoked and received resulted in innocents being taken with the guilty--and the two sometimes becoming blurred.
The energy with which he describes the attacks by the guerrillas on the Ayacucho police stations, the torture of suspects, the funerals of officers and cadets, the rain on a tin-roofed shanty where a teenaged girl guerrilla shows her interviewers the marks of her abuse by her captors: all of these vignettes unforgettably inscribe themselves on your memory.
(Edited from a review article, "No Escape from the Anthill" at the on-line Belfast journal The Blanket)
Definitive Account of Shining Path.......2003-05-29
Gorriti's account of how Abimael Guzman and his astoundingly savage cohort found enough followers to convulse Peru for a decade is detailed and authoritative. It is also wonderfully free of the dense prose and meandering sentences which plague so much serious writing on Latin America. This book is indispensable for anyone attempting to understand how savage Maoism found purchase in the Andes.

Book Description
The Megapodes describes and illustrates the 22 species in this fascinating family found over Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, The Philippines, The Nicobar Islands and some southwest Pacific Islands. Megapodes are the only birds known to use external heat sources rather than body heat for incubation. The authors explore the extraordinary array of physiological, ecological and behavioural adaptations related to the unique incubation technique of this unusual family. 22 species accounts provide complete descriptions of the bird in its natural state and include sonograms where possible.
Customer Reviews:
All You Could Want to Know About These Truly Unique Birds.......2004-03-13
Mostly dull grey and secretive, megapodes are hardly among the most popular birds to watch - though there are spectacular exceptions like the extraordinary Maleo of Sulawesi.
However, their breeding ecology is like that of no other birds - like reptiles, they dig their eggs in the ground or in specially-built incubation mounds.
This has always made them among the most interesting birds in my eyes, and I was always pleased to be able to observe individuals of the several species I saw in Indonesia and the Philippines. Most sightings were by chance, often on remote offshore islands or when hiking in rugged interior mountains. No less interesting - and far easier to locate - were their huge incubation mounds, or some well-known nesting grounds where they gathered in masses, like the beach near Simau village on Halmahera Island.
But observing these shy birds in the wild was always a difficult task, so I was very pleased to be able to obtain all information about their life, status and taxonomy I could think of in this extremely thoroughly-written book.
Highly recommended to anyone interested in this very special group of birds.
