Malaparte: A House Like Me
Michael Mcdonough Manufacturer: Clarkson Potter ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0609603787 Release Date: 1999-11-23 |
Book Description
Malaparte: A House Like Me offers an extraordinary look at Malaparte, the man and the house. Often called the most beautiful house in the world, Casa Malaparte in Capri, Italy, is dramatically sited on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It was home to Curzio Malaparte (1898-1957), the Italian writer who designed the building. A perpetual enigma, he still confounds nearly all who care to look. Actor, novelist, poet, filmmaker, soldier, playwright, journalist, political figure, prisoner, composer, charmer -- inventor and revealer of truths -- Malaparte associated with Mussolini and Stalin, vilified Hitler, and admired Mao. He was a journalist in London, a collaborator with the Surrealists in Paris, and a war correspondent in Berlin and on the Russian front. "Casa come me," he called the building -- "house like me" -- inviting endless speculation as to what meaning lay within.Customer Reviews:

In the Shadow of Glory: The Thirteenth Minnesota in the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars, 1898-1899
Kyle Roy Ward Manufacturer: North Star Press of St. Cloud ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 087839138X |
Book Description
In the wake of the Civil War, conflict was looked upon as a right of passage, so when the United States became embroiled in the Spanish-American and Philipene-American Wars, young men marched away to fulfill their destiny, as they were told. But, by the time they came back, they were put down and forgotten. This is the story of the 13th Minnesota Regiment and their trials in the Pacific.Customer Reviews:
Caught between a Rock and a Hard Place.......2001-07-30
Admiral Dewey's steel ships battered the wooden Spanish fleet but there were no national heroes, no San Juan Hill, and no glorious result, much like a war fought over half a century later. When the soldiers ended up fighting the people that they were sent to free, the results were tarnished. The author uses his superb command of the historical facts to weave a concise timeline of events.

Global Communications since 1844: Geopolitics and Technology
Peter J. Hugill Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801860741 |
Book Description
In World Trade since 1431, Peter Hugill showed how the interplay of technology and geography guided the evolution of the modern global capitalistic system. Now, in the successor to that widely acclaimed book, Hugill shifts the focus to telecommunications, once again demonstrating that those nations that best developed and marketed new technologies were the nations that rose to world power.
Beginning with the advent of the telegraph in the 1840s, Hugill shows how each major change in transportation and communications technologies brought about a corresponding transformation from one world economy to another. British advances in international telegraphy after the American Civil War, for example, kept that nation just ahead of the United States in the communications race, a position it held until 1945. Hugill explains how such developments as aerial bombardment of cities in World War I spurred the development of radio and, ultimately, radar. He also traces the steps that led to the British surrender of world hegemony to the United States at the end of World War II.
Praise for Peter Hugill's World Trade since 1431:
"A magnificent work, Braudelian in its conception, scope, and attention to detail... A delight." -- Progress in Human Geography
"A first-rate historical study in the genre of world history... Combines geography with the social sciences in skillful fashion. It is lucidly written and will appeal to the specialist and general reader." -- Virginia Quarterly Review
"Hugill provides a refreshingly long historical sweep in arguing that transportation technologies have been the key to success in world trade... A wealth of historical and technical detail." -- Geonomics
