Good, but not entirly objective.......2005-07-29

I think Avital brings up some very important points about modernism. He starts out the book objective but then within thirty pages or so becomes extremely polarized on the subject. His arguement is that if it is modern art it is irrifutably nonart. I think it a little presumptious to make such a generalized claim. There are some people in the world that, even well educated, try to generalize an idea and then apply it to everything out there that is even remotely resemblant of the idea. He attacks universities and generalizes that all faculty at a university are ignorant and unlearned. He states that there is no paridigm for modern art. This is not true. I understand where he is coming from because I do see ignorance in professors even, but once again not all professors. Avital is bias in thinking that he has the whole modern thing figured out. Modern art is not without principle. I am a major advocate of figurative art, but I am also studying musical works such as katchatrian and prokoffiev and connecting their works to the modern art movement. There is a backbone to modern art. I would recommend this book because there is some truth to it, and the things that I do not agree with are also important for a reader to learn, especially for people like me who are trying to figure out where art is going today.

A Startling and Persuasive Book.......2004-05-16

This is a very engaging and well-presented arguement. What I admired most about the book was the author's ability to get his mind above the fog and confusion that surrounds contemporary art. Because of that, the book has a clarity and originality that are unusual in this field.

Avital writes about the lie we all like to ignore!!!
Is modern art is art at all?? After reading this book the answer is clear. Every art lover must read this book to understand the meaning of art and the meaning of human culture. Without reading this book you will stay, unfortunately, ignorant.

Awesome Book For The Mad Mag. Fan.......2000-07-14

One of the most consistantly great things about Mad Magazine over the last 30+ years has been Al Jaffee's fold in's which were always on the inside back cover. This book features many of them with a before (not folded) and an after (folded) picture. The book is very sleek because of the excellant job that was done with the fold ins. If you're a long time Mad Magazine fold in fan you need this book.

If you are a big fan of MAD's movie and television parodies then you want to know before you start flipping through the pages of "MAD Power" that you are not going to find any of the classics. Instead there are a couple of rather different types of parodies. "Song of Mighty Joe Kong," drawn by Mort Drucker and written by Dick De Bartolo, combines "King Kong," "Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young" into a new film starring James Garner, Doris Day, and Dick Van Dyke (with Richard Burton as the title character). Unfortunately, I think you have to be raised on Doris Day films to really enjoy the merger of the giant ape film with her particular brand of movie comedy. Then Drucker teams up with Larry Siegel for "MAD Looks at a Typical Kiddie TV Show," starring Uncle Nutsy. Again, it is the genre under comic assault more than a specific target.

"MAD Power" was originally published in 1964, which means you have to remember that this was before the Beatles showed up on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and changed American pop culture, forcing the Usual Gang of Idiots at the magazine to retool. But if you are looking for what was funny during the Kennedy Administration, editor Albert B. Feldstein has provided a nice survey. The best indication of this is the "Famous People's Home-Study Courses" put together by artist Bob Clarke and writer Al Jaffee, which includes one from ten famous space travelers featuring not only Shepard and Glenn, but Laika the dog, Jose Jimenez, and Alfred E. Neuman. Frank Jacobs and all of the MAD artists put together a series of "MAD's Valentines to American Industry" and Dave Berg provides his "Lighter Side" looks at both Adult and Kids Parties.

The other choice parts in this one are "I Got All the Finks I Need," Bob Clarke and Larry Siegel's rejoinder to Charles Schulz's Peanuts book "I Need All the Friends I Can Get," and the semi-complete issue of "Phony Magazine." This parody of a specialty magazine (remember, this was before computers allowed such things to be targeted to any and all groups) includes ads for phony labels and phony accent lessons, a look at the "Phony of the Month," and a test to find out how phony you are. You will also find several bits from Dave Martin, Spy vs. Spy, and Sergio Argonnes.

The other thing to pay attention to here is the concerted efforts to warp the minds of America's children. Realizing that children's safety songs are usually based on old-fashioned subjects, such as playing with matches (e.g., "Bad, Bad, Matches" sung to the tune of "Frere Jacques"), Joe Orlando and Larry Siegel come up with some "Up-to-Date Safety Songs for Children" (e.g., "It's A Grand Old Bag" sung to the tune of "You're A Grand Old Flag"). Then there is Al Jaffee's "A Child's View of Newspaper Headlines" on things like "School Tax to Be Higher" and "South Vietnam Army Heads Removed." This reprint collection is a nostalgic look at comedy from simpler times from warped minds, which is a pretty good combination to have when you go back that far.

The long-term reduction of hunger and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the great challenges for the international development community. Eliminating hunger and promoting widespread growth in the region inevitably involves agriculture, given its central role in the region's economies. Over the past 20 years, most African governments have carried out reforms to deregulate agricultural markets and reduce the role of state enterprises. How much has the state actually withdrawn from agricultural markets? Have well-functioning private markets emerged? How successful were these reforms in boosting agricultural production, economic growth, and the incomes of the rural poor? What lessons can we learn from the reform process?

The authors of this book address these questions through an analysis based on an extensive review of experiences with reform, focusing on three major agricultural markets: fertilizer, food crops, and export crops. They examine the historical rationales for intervention, the factors contributing to reform, the process of implementation, and the impact of the reforms on farmers and consumers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The authors find that reforms have had many favorable results, but that the impact has been muted by partial implementation and structural constraints. They propose a new agenda for promoting the development of agricultural markets in Sub-Saharan Africa, identifying areas where governments can play a supportive role. They argue that appropriate agricultural marketing policies and investments can improve livelihoods and the economic health of the region.

The Civil War, you might think, belonged to the South, and to the North--but never to the West.
But the Civil War did make it to the West, and it made it to New Mexico, and one Confederate soldier in that war kept a journal.
Don Alberts has done fans of New Mexico's history an enormous favor by editing those journals into this insightful book--"Rebels on the Rio Grande"--a book that brings the war alive in all its fear, violence, tension, stress, and boredom.
From the days of fighting, to the men who led them, to the days of waiting around for something to happen, this book has it all, and is an essential purchase for any New Mexico (or Civil war) historian, whether amateur or professional.
Also, for residents of New Mexico's Sandia Mountains, this book is indispensable, as it contains firsthand 1862 accounts of what the communities of Tijeras and San Antonio (in Bernalillo County) were like, as well as a nice little sketch of what San Antonio used to look like.
It's great.
