This book, based upon a large-scale research project, examines alternative types of exchange rate policies being pursued and the changing nature of exchange rate policy during the transition process in four countries--Slovenia, Bulgaria, Poland, and the Czech Republic. The book brings together a series of original contributions by country experts and draws out some common themes and over-arching policy implications for the operation of exchange rate policy in the transition process.

                              Book Description

Since 1978, reform policies introduced in rural China have had a profound impact on women's work and gender divisions of labor. This book provides detailed information on the shifts in women's work patterns that have occurred. It explains how and why these shifts have come about, and how they relate to other aspects of women's position in society. While other aspects of reform in rural China have been analyzed extensively, this is one of very few, and to date the most comprehensive, studies of the effects of reform on rural women.

                              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the best in the genre.......1999-10-18

Tamara Jacka's book on women's economic status in rural China is the best book on this sub-topic for the first 20 years of the reforms.

The real contribution of Jacka's book is analyzing rural women's options in the new market economy that featured both cooperative and individual oriented opportunities. Jacka points out that while the reform policies have opened some doors for rural women, many of the opportunities created by the reform policies remain open to men only for many reasons, which Jacka explores. Central is the "inside"/"outside" work distinction (which changes definition as opportunties evolve) and a thorough investigation of the "courtyard" economic sector, which has many benefits for women, but some tradeoffs too.

People will get very close to understanding rural China in the 1980s-90s by reading this book. It will be of interest to all readers interested in WID/GAD as well, not just China watchers.

While this book is based on a ton of hands on research in China, it is not a specific case study. For a such a book, see Ellen Judd's excellent "Gender and Power in North China".

Sometimes, "what we've got here" is not "a failure to communicate." Often, people understand each other perfectly well and still disagree with each other. What to do? Dr. David Stiebel outlines a four-point plan that can help you resolve seemingly unwinnable arguments in your favor.

In humorous, yet straightforward, language, Dr. Stiebel guides readers through the principles of "strategic communication." These strategies allow you to anticipate your opponent's reactions and play to them, often by underemphasizing your own motives, in order to get what you want. Whether you're looking for solutions to conflicts at home or in the workplace, When Talking Makes Things Worse! offers sensible advice that you can apply immediately.

                                Book Description

We all know that the key to working things out is communication...right? But often, the more you talk, the worse things get. This is the first bestseller to show how to resolve problems with your boss or spouse when communication fails. ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, and Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist Dave Barry rave about it. Fortune 500 negotiation expert Dr. David Stiebel of the University of California, Berkeley explains the true key to resolving disagreement strategy. He describes four steps to think strategically on your feet. Dr. Stiebel has appeared on the big three broadcast networks discussing disputes in the news. The title has been selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club's, Money Book Club, Fortune International Book Club, and Columbia House Audiobook Club.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on negotiation, debunks many misguided myths.......2005-03-08

I bought this book second-hand and had it shipped from USA. Read it in one evening, and the verdict is - one of the best books on negotiation. Although neither the title, nor the subtitle bear any reference to negotiation (a marketing and editorial mistake in my opinion!!!) this book is not just about communication, it is predominantely about persuasion and negotiation.

I run training courses on negotiation, so, naturally, I've read almost all negotiation books available in English language. Can't tell you how much rubbish is out there on this particular topic. Not David Stiebel's book - this one is one of the best. Regrettably, one of the least obtainable ...

If you liked "Start with NO ..." by Jim Camp, you will like this book too. It also debunks the win-win myth (and many others)and puts to shame many bestselling books out there .. Negotiate This or That, Secrets of This and That ...

Although by no means a complete treatise on negotiation, this book should be on every negotiator's Top 10 list!

They were the shock troops of the American Army. In their ranks were lumberjacks, miners, skiers--men from the United States and Canada, accustomed to hardship and living on their own. Their training was extraordinary: forced marches of 100 miles in the Montana wilderness with 50-pound backpacks was typical. Weapons training was equally rigorous and the men became as dangerous with their hands and a knife as they were with rifle and machine gun. In Italy they became the unit called to accomplish the impossible. At Monte Cassino, and at Anzio, they earned the respectful accolade from their German enemies. In this book, the men of the First Special Service Force tell the full story of their unit, regarded as the parent of the Green Berets.

My grandfather served with the Devils Brigade, and since knowing that I wanted to learn more about this extraordinary elite unit of WWII. What I found was perhaps one of the best oral recount's of one of the finest units to ever exist. Having grown up in East Helena (3 miles east of Helena, Montana) and working at one point out at Ft. William Henry Harrison, this book gave me a new found respect for my grandfather and the great men who served in the First Special Service Force. Having finished the book I passed it on to my grandfather and he couldn't let it go. Driving by Memorial Park in Helena and watching the American and Canadian Flags both flying next to the First Special Service Force memorial, day and night, 365 days a year, I can't help but utter a simple, "thank you" everytime I go past it to those that are still living and those that perished for the freedom they helped provide for both countries.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a greater depth of knowledge of this elite unit, or for the military buffs who wish to learn about or learn more of this outstanding unit!

My grandpa happened to pass away about 6 years ago, and he happened to be a part of the Black Devil Brigade. His accounts are in this book, his name is Fred Hubbard, and throughout the book he moves from a 2nd LT to a Captain. The funny thing is, I married a man who just commissioned into the army as a 2nd LT. and will soon be deploying. It is amazing to hear the story of what my grandfather when through captured in a book. The things these men endured for our freedom will always amaze me. I will always wish that I spent more time picking my grandpas brain while he was alive, but I am thankful to have this book to remember these things. This book really captures the essence of what these men went through, and what began what is the special forces today.

Mr. Springer may have been initially motivated by the desire to honor his uncle (killed serving with the First Special Service Force) but his work honors all who served in that unit. One seldom sees an oral history which tells the story of a unit so well. All the contributions by unit members tell the story without the distractions often found in other compilations. Always engaging, you just don't want to put the book down. Not only does one learn about the unit and individuals who made up that unit but one also learns about the equipment used, how it was acquired, and the soldiers' opinions of its performance. An amazing amount of information presented in a way that also entertains and honors the men who served.

                                5 out of 5 stars A true tribute.......2003-12-07

Hats off to Joe Springer....! He did the men of 5-2 and the FSSF an honor. My father was a Lieutenant in 5-2 FSSF and one of the main characters of the book, and Joe's Uncle was one of my father's NCO's who was KIA on Anzio. The personal accounts in the book may sound far fetched and exaggerated. However, this is far from the truth. The exploits of the men of the FSSF are a matter of record. Every man who served in the FSSF is a very unique individual. I got to know many of these gentlemen over the years by attending the annual FSSF reunions. And yes, what an honor and a privilege to just meet and speak with them about WWII and life in general. Every man in the FSSF willingly, and knowingly volunteered to join a unit where the odds of being accepted in the unit is less than 20%, and your chances for survival were even less. Thank You Joe for getting my father to open up regarding his experiences during WWII for your book. It also meant so much to him to honor the men in his command who were taken, that were not only soldiers/warriors, but true friends forever.

                                  Book Description

A Guide to the Birds of the Philippines is the first and only guide that covers all 572 species of birds known to occur within the 7,100 islands that make up the Philippines. The Philippine avifauna includes some 170 endemics - species that are not found anywhere else in the world - and is thus of interest to avid birders around the world. Many of these species are also endangered, due to the high levels of habitat destruction in the Philippine forest, and this book is also urgently needed by conservation workers in the region. The Guide is illustrated by 72 specially painted colour plates that show all but the three vagrant species recently recorded there. Its text gives detailed information about the plumage, voice, range, distribution, status, habitat, life history and behaviour of the birds and is accompanied by distribution maps for all the species described. The expert team of authors and artists includes two prominent Philippine ornithologists, and has combined field experience summing to over 100 years. This book clearly will be the standard for Philippine Ornithology for many years to come.

I am not an ornithologist. I have been using KENNEDY et al.'s book for several months, and find it all the more useful as I wasn't able to find any other book on Philippine birds. It is frustrating, however, in so far as Tagalog and other indigenous names are not mentioned, or very seldom. For instance I looked for balatitî / bulatitî and lilíw that are often mentioned in my documents, but couldn't find them. Nevertheless, KENNEDY and his team should be encouraged to work on a second, enriched edition, with finder lists in Philippine languages.

2 out of 5 stars Birds of the Philippines - maybe.......2004-02-19

I'm using this book in the Philippines and found it to be somewhat unreliable. Many species are listed as uncommon or rare and not really specific to the Philippines but to more of Asia in general. I've seen many birds that are not included in the book and find it fustrating.

The most use I've used the book for is to show children the pictures and make friends when language difference is an obstacle.

I realize that maybe the Philippines is not as bird friendly has other countries, but expected more out of this book. Maybe this is as good as it gets and there is room for much improvement.

I'm still glad I brought it, but just somewhat disappointed in the contents.

4 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for this book.......2001-08-15

This book is definitely the best field guide yet that came out of press. The plates are good and rendered better. Although, what is lacking is the description of the different races of each bird. Only the nominate race is described and I still have to refer to the book "Philippine Birds" by DuPont for the info lacking in this book. Still waiting for a better one.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an excellent guide to the birds of the Philippines!.......2000-12-25

Although I agree with Mike Ramos on the quality of the text of this book, I disagree with him concerning plate quality. Often multiple artists can lead to varying quality and lack of uniformity, however in this Philippine guide, which has 12 artists, the plates are surprisingly uniform in layout and generally of very high quality. This book has a winning combination of excellent plates accompanied by clear, concise distributional maps and useful, abbreviated texts all at the users fingertips when the book is opened to a particular plate. There are a few problems with the order and names of authors on the Amazon listing. Robert S. Kennedy is the first author, followed by Pedro C. Gonzales, Edward C. Dickenson Hector C. Miranda, Jr. (his name is incorrect in the Amazon book listing) and Timothy H. Fisher.

3 out of 5 stars The Philippines get a bird guide.......2000-09-30

Long needed, a well written and well organised field guide to the birds of the Philippines is finally available. The 72 color plates illustrate all the species of the islands. A nice color distribution map and a short summary of status and occurance, along with identification information is opposite each image.

Unfortunatly the book follows the current trend in bird guides of using more than one illustrator. The result, though well done in some other books, often results in a clash of styles, and worse, inconsistancy. This book is illustrated by twelve artists and suffers a little from the latter. The work here is uneven, some of the illustrators being better at capturing the look of the birds than others. The proportions, build, and "facial expression" are not correctly drawn for many species. Experienced birders will have fewer problems translating what they are seeing in their binoculars to what is on the color plate. But beginners and more casual observers may encounter some frustration. For example, the figure of the Citrine Flycatcher on plate 62 resembles the bird only in general color pattern. This species usually appears brighter, and you would not be far wrong if your impression on seeing it, is of an all yellow bird. Also, given the head size, the body should be shown slightly larger and more filled out. The folded wing is incorrectly drawn, as are those of every other bird on the plate. Though not unique to this guide, many of the species that have olive or yellow-green upperparts are shown too dull and gray. The White-eyes on plate 70 for instance are bright, trim little characters, that may remind North American birders of Wood Warblers, not the dull, misshapen things depicted.

My guess is that so many illustrators are being used to save time, and perhaps the money needed to pay a really good one to produce 70 or 80 plates. Whatever the reasons, the result here are some illustrations that betray a lack of knowledge of the form of birds that really shouldn't be in a modern field guide. Not with the high standards achieved in other works, which this book otherwise seems to meet.

Despite these problems, all of the plates are adequate for identifying the birds, indeed, many are quite well done, and the authors and artists have produced a work of lasting value. It certainly will be a useful book in the field or reference on the shelf.

                                  Book Description

This is the very first comprehensive photographic guide to the birds of mainland Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and Borneo, including the birds of Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Indochina, South China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Covering 668 species, the volume contains a distribution map for each species in addition to more than 700 brilliant color photographs, many appearing here for the first time. The photographs are complemented by a concise text providing all the information needed to accurately identify species in one of the world's richest avifauna regions.

Given the notorious difficulty of photographing rainforest birds, this book represents a major achievement. It is an ideal volume for travelers to the region as well as for all bird lovers.

Morten Strange is a professional bird photographer and writer. He lived in Singapore from 1980 to 1993 and has traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia. He was formerly the International Officer for the Danish Ornithological Society. His photojournalism has appeared in more than 60 books and more than 100 magazine articles.

2 out of 5 stars Not the book for the serious birder.......2003-04-19

While it is nice to see the birds in the flesh with real-life pictures of them, it is certainly not pratical for use in the field.

Some of the pictures are poorly taken and it is highly difficult if not impossible to identify certain birds. Some of the images are back-lit, giving a silhouette of the bird!

There is no proper classification and very little info given of the birds - how the juveniles look like, breeding plumage, male/female plumage etc.

I suppose it is a good book for the casual birder who would like to know what's chirping outside his apartment window or chalet in the wilderness. It also comes with some interesting information on where to go birding to catch wetland or passerine birds etc.

I must commend Strange though for all his efforts into going into the field to capture these pictures - all pictures in the book were taken by Strange - good job Strange!
