This volume studies the architecture and urbanism of modern-era Italian colonialism (1869-1943) as it sought to build colonies in North and East Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. Mia Fuller follows, not only the design of the physical architecture, but also the development of colonial design theory, based on the assumptions made about the colonized, and also the application of modernist theory to both Italian architecture and that of its colonies. Moderns Abroad is the first book to present an overview of Italian colonial architecture and city planning. Not any more. Everything you wanted to know about italian colonial architecture ( Modernist architecture in its purist form).

The 1809 campaign on the Danube was to break the spell of Napoleon's invincibility. Indeed Wagram – the largest battle in history at the time – was Napoleon's revenge for his first personal defeat on the battlefield – at Aspern – Essling. In gaining this revenge the French commander was not wholly successful. Although the French won the battle as the Austrians eventually quit the field, the victory was an extremely hollow one. Both these epic battles are expertly described by Ian Castle, chronicling the many changes of fortune as each side captured, lost, then recaptured key positions.

Good Overview.......2002-10-31

Aspern & Wagram 1809: Mighty Clash of Empires (Osprey Military Campaign, No 33)by Ian Castle, David G. Chandler (Editor)is a good overview of the battle that was the follow up to Austerlitz and Napoleon great victory. The battles described in the book in themselves are not that exciting or interesting, but when read in the proper historical context are well worth the read.

The book is written in the traditional style in a very readable format. One gets the bascis of the conflict as well as the basic whys and wherefores. All in all this is a positive read.

Well-written Battle Narrative!.......2001-05-03

I'll admit it -- I'm a Napoleonic novice. I've been drawn to the period by the epic scope of the wars, the brilliance of the generalship, and all the pretty uniforms.

Most of the works I've read on the period (and they're not many) have been extremely dry. The Osprey Campaign series tends to lose sight of the forest for the trees; there's lots of detail about where the voltiguer company of the 1er ligne spent the time between 1307 and 1418, but not much sense of the ebb and flow of battle.

Not so with this book. The detail is still there, but the reader comes away with a true appreciation of the fortunes of both armies in the 1809 campaign.

The orders of battle will prove very useful for wargamers, as they provide the strengths of the various units.

The only real drawback to this work is the lack of personalities. We get some small glance inside the mind of Charles, but Napoleon and the lesser generals are never fleshed out. I'd have liked some commentary on their various views of the fighting.

'The Danube, not the Austrians, Defeated Us'.......2000-06-21

This is a companion volume to the author's book on Eckmuhl in the same series. Both, in my opinion, are excellent. The author has produced a balanced account, using both Austrian and French sources, that is both reliable and appropriate and acceptable to use as a reference.

There are a few minor errors, such as confusing voltigeurs and chasseurs in the French light infantry regiments, stating 'there was little tactical distinction' between French line and light infantry, and that Berthier, Napoleon's chief of staff, was initially in the campaign the commander of the French Army of Germany, which he was not. However, these faux pas do not detract from the overall impact of the book. The author is quick to point out, however, that 'In the Hapsburg army, progression was dictated more by birth and seniority than by military prowess' and that the Austrian heavy cavalry didn't use a backplate for their cuirass which 'was a serious disadvantage for Austrian cuirassiers when they clashed with their French counterparts.' Not all agree with these assessments, especially some historians who are pro-Austrian, and the author has done well to point out these facts.

The narrative is lively, the account of the campaign and battles accurate, and the casualty figures close to the mark. Overall this is an excellent account of a critical campaign, and with its companion volume on Eckmuhl, a reliable, thorough reference that can be used with confidence by historians, wargamers, and enthusiasts.

I was disappointed that Osprey chose to reuse some prints from its Men-at-Arms series, some of which may have small errors in them. However, the black and white illustrations are superb, and the reuse of those prints does not detract from the overall impact of the volume.

This book is highly recommended.

Sources and verbiage.......2000-04-27

I helped Ian out with this booklet. Yes, it's in the Osprey format and intended as a guide only. I know Ian was frustrated at being at brigade level for much of the time. However, this is the only book which has made use of a lot of material from both sides! I was surprised at the comment about Arnold - nice narrative, but so is Sharpe! Petre used Angeli, but Angeli only describes about a third of Wagram. It says a lot for the state of Napoleonic historical writing hat this is the best so far on these two battles. We should get more, if only in 2009! Dave Hollins

Aspern? Not Waterloo?.......2000-03-02

I am a little bit surprised, I thought that British author can be interested only at Waterloo. I agree with the other customer, this book is for beginners.

This is a beverage. The REAL MEAL is Arnold's work!

Each chapter is an essay reviewing and assessing the trend from a different viewpoint, all written by leaders in the fields of ornithology, conservation, and population biology.

Summarize existing research and call for more.......2003-05-28

This 1995 publication contains 17 chapters reviewing current research of critical issues of the ecology and conservation of neotropical migratory birds. Although the title implies "management", the number of specific management recommendations varies depending upon the author, taxonomic group or geographic area being discussed. In all the chapters, is an overwhelming call for more research.

Tallahassee's own Dr. James and Charles McCulloch, provided a key paper, on the strength of inferences about causes. Often it is easy to blame one source or another for declines, but this paper helps understand the need for "true experiment".

An interesting series is four chapters on temporal perspectives on population limitation, including a discussion of summer versus winter limitation, habitat use in the neoptropics, and habitat requirements during migration. The chapter on insect outbreaks and other perturbations (such as climate) by Rotenberry et al was important perspective, particular here in Florida, where a hurricane can change the vegetative characteristics of an area overnight.

The middle six chapters discuss forest management, and other human effects such as agricultural practices (this chapter was particularly eye opening: with 52% of the land area in the 48 contiguous states).

The final section on landscape scale perspectives, provided problems of management at different scales, from a local clear-cut to continental scale. This perhaps might have been frustrating to the land manager seeking to understand how to manage his 1000 acres, or what to do about the cowbirds that are impacting wood thrush.

There are other threats such as West Nile Virus, exotic species, and perhaps global warming that may become important in the future. Perhaps Faaborg's "Saving migrant birds"... may provide other insights.
