Customer Reviews:
Essential reading before doing business in China.......2001-04-02
Much of today's perception is that China is a giant country marred in communism and corruption. The reality revealed by Ms Keister is quiet different. Since 1978 Chinese have sought to reproduce Japanese and Korean successes and reformed Chinese economy, favouring Business groups. Like Japanese Keiretsu and Korean Chaebol but with behaviour closer to Taiwanese business networks (qiye jituan), Chinese business groups try to cope with their market's imperfect nature, looking links with finance corporations for their funding, regional alliances to penetrate local markets, pooling of resources and know-how to diminish costs. These business groups are protected by the Chinese state in order to enhance China's overhall performance. The book also demonstrates that companies belonging to business groups are more reliable, performing and profitable than those who do not.
Because the implications on business dealings of Westerners with China, reading this book is essential when doing business to pick up the right partner, understand one does not deal with a single company but a giant corporate group with informal relations and that hindrances found on the path of negotiation are not Communist Party blocking but those giants trying to get the most out of their Western partner without given too much. 'Blindside' from Eanmon Fingleton written about Japan is very revealing on how Corporate Japan is structured. China is exactly the same, 10 times bigger.
The book is especially precious now China officially favours the creation of 50 major business groups to improve Chinese competitiveness on global markets. Just like for Japan this does not mean that Chinese markets will be more open to foreigners, except for those companies and individuals which can bring essential resources and know-how to fulfill their global strategy. China Inc is not a myth but free-wheeling American-like Chinese capitalism is not for tomorrow either.

Book Description
Although Japan and the United States are the world's leading economies, there are significant differences in the ways their wealth is translated into living standards. A careful comparison of housing markets illustrates not only how living standards in the two countries differ, but also reveals much about saving patterns and how they affect wealth accumulation.
In this volume, ten essays discuss the evolution of housing prices, housing markets and personal savings, housing finance, commuting, and the impact of public policy on housing markets. The studies reveal surprising differences in housing investment in the two countries. For example, because down payments in Japan are much higher than in the United States, Japanese tend to delay home purchases relative to their American counterparts. In the United States, the advent of home equity credit may have reduced private saving overall.
This book is the first comparison of housing markets in Japan and the United States, and its findings illuminate the effects of housing markets on productivity growth, business investment, and trade.

Astonishing...powerful...one of the best labor histories ever written.......2007-02-19
This is an outstanding book. It is incredibly detailed, contains massive (yes, massive!) footnotes, and manages to not only bring alive the struggle of steel and iron workers but to deeply move the reader.
Steelmaking is an industry barely 120 years old, and yet much of the industry's history in its early decades is lost. What remains are self-serving biographies of steel barons and a few historical works here and there on major steel strikes (such as the Homestead strike of 1892). The evolution of work, the issues of steelworkers, the challenges and obstacles they confronted as skilled and yet "common" laborers, the geographical narrowness of the steel industry: These are issues which no other work has, to my knowledge, discussed. Yet, Brody is so good at describing and detailing the work of the steel and iron worker that the reader will come away almost sure that he or she can go to work in a steel mill! That's how evocative and effective this book is.
I was bowled over by the sheer level of detail in this work, too. Authors walk a fine line in including detail. They can get bogged down in it like quicksand. Others end up including so many digressive if colorful details that the main thrust of the historical narrative is lost. But David Brody has managed to create a real world, a palpably real and tangible world of the steel worker. It's almost a Tolkienian accomplishment!
I am simply amazed at how much detail Brody was able to unearth, even when it came to the smallest or most insignificant historical moment. This is real scholarship. In other works of this nature, I find authors glossing over historical incidents simply because they cannot find any published sources to rely on, and don't want to dig to locate primary-source documents or works. Not Brody. No stone is left unturned. No month or year passes by without a clear and detailed look at what happened.
I rank David Brody's work on steelworkers as one of the critical works in American industrial history, as well as one of a very few and rare works which manages to capture almost completely the history of a segment of the American labor movement. It is an astonishing and powerful work.
I consider it one of the best labor histories ever written.

Book Description
Most descriptions of the British Army's campaign in the Turkish theater during World War I focus on the popular notion that the conflict there was somehow less brutal than on the European battlefields. This view was encouraged by such films as Lawrence of Arabia and The Light Horsemen. However, in Hell in the Holy Land, David R. Woodward uses graphic personal accounts from the diaries and letters of British soldiers to describe in rigorous detail the genuine experience of the fighting and dying in Egypt and Palestine.
The voices of these British soldiers offer an overlooked perspective of the Great War, describing not only the horrors of combat but the daily struggles of soldiers who were stationed in an unfamiliar environment that often proved just as antagonistic as the enemy. A soldier of the Dorset Yeomanry, stationed in Egypt, wrote: "There are three sounds in Egypt which never ceasethe creaking of the waterwheels, the song of the frogs, and the buzz of flies
. Letter writing is an impossibility in the evening, for as soon as the sun goes down, if a lamp is lighted, the air all round is thick with little grey sand-flies which bite disgustingly."
Using archival records, many of which are housed in the Imperial War Museum in London, England, Woodward paints a vivid picture of life for British soldiers in the Middle East by allowing them to speak for themselves.
Customer Reviews:
First-hand stories told in context.......2007-02-11
Although the title sounds as if the book will be about the entire campaign in the Middle East it concentrates primarily on the Sinai-Palestine campaigns as told mostly in first person accounts.
While extremely interesting in that it discusses details of life and campaigning as experienced by the typical soldier it loses the "big picture" fairly quickly (despite discussions of foibles and weaknesses of the British generals in command) and never really explains to the reader what Austrians and Germans are doing in Palestine. Still, not a bad book and definitely something you would want if studying the WWI campaigns in the region as a whole. I highly recommend it.
Limited in scope.......2007-01-02
The full title of this book is "Hell in the Holy Land: World War I in the Middle East". While the first part is appropriate, this book is not a history of World War I in the Middle East. Rather, as stated near the end of the "Megiddo" chapter, it is a "personal account of British operations in Egypt and Palestine". The author takes personal accounts of British soldiers and exerpts them in the book. Through these exerpts we really get to see what the actual thoughts and concerns of these soldiers were. However, the story is told from only the British point of view. The only mention of the Turks is as they were seen by the British. There is nothing about the Turkish soldier's point of view, Turkish strategy, plans, etc. There is no mention of any other theater in the Middle East other than Egypt/Palestine. We hear nothing about the Mesopotamian campaing or events in Arabia. If you are looking for personal accounts of British soldiers in Egypt/Palestine, than this is the book for you. If you are looking for a comprehensive discussion of World War I in the Middle East then look elsewhere.
A FORGOTTEN THEATER of WORLD WAR I.......2006-07-21
The Preface observes "Not only has the campaign in Egypt and Palestine been neglected in the historiography of the war, the ordinary British soldier has not been given his due." Author, David Woodward, corrects these omissions by narrating World War I warfare in the Turkish theater using the diaries and letters of the British soldiers to describe combat in this area. Woodward writes "The British soldiers in Egypt and Palestine, whose words constitute a large part of this book, fought in a theatre very different from France and Flanders." They were member of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF).
The British faced the problem of "....how could the War Office field the necessary forces to maintain its position in France and also defend the empire against the global threat posed by the Turko-German alignment." They chose to fight Turkey with Territorials augmented by imperial troops from Australia, New Zealand and India. The text notes "Among the participants, the Territorials have been especially overlooked ....and the Territorial Divisions were called upon to do most of the fighting in the battles of Gaza and the conquest of Jerusalem." The Territorials were roughly the equivalent of American Reserve units.
The narration begins in Egypt stating "The defense of Egypt....was not a `side show.' Its loss would be a disaster....Not only would the Suez Canal be lost, the Turko-German menace would now extend to Africa." To protect the Suez Canal a campaign to clear the Sinai was initiated. The text gives an excellent account of this operation where the environment was extremely hot and adverse. Camels were an effective means of transportation but were difficult to manage. "Drivers were required as well a camels." Ultimately, tens of thousands of men were employed in the EEF camel force. The difficulties of Sinai operations are illustrated by the work, begun in 1916, to build a standard-gauge railway across the Sinai. Progress averaged only 1/2 a mile a day. Fifty years earlier, the United States had built the Union Pacific Railroad westward at a rate of 1 or 2 miles a day with progress occasionally reaching 3 or 4 miles a day.
The EEF praised the pluck and endurance of the Turks. The text's accounts of two failed efforts to conquer the city of Gaza are interesting. Unfortunately, British troops were poorly lead. On the first attempt, elements had reached the center of Gaza but where withdrawn. The appointment of Sir Edmund Allenby as commander of the EEF "brought a new style and needed energy to GHQ." The text gives an excellent narrative of Allenby's performance. An interesting item was that on 13 November 1917 two British cavalry regiments attacked Junction Station in what was probably the last major cavalry charge in the British Army. Faced with morale problems at home, Prime Minister Lloyd George gave Allenby a mandate to capture "Jerusalem before Christmas." Interestingly, the idea of a crusade to free Jerusalem resonated with many of the men. By 7 a.m. on 9 December 1917 no organized body of the enemy remained in Jerusalem. The comments in diaries and letters covering Allenby's Jerusalem campaign are most interesting.
However, the text notes that a steep price was paid for British success in the Middle East: 28,000 casualties were experienced in November and December 1917. Nevertheless, believing that offensives on the western front were doomed to failure, Allenby's success made Prime Minister Lloyd George even more determined that Britain's main military effort in 1918 would be in the Middle East. In March 1918, the War Cabinet authorized Allenby to advance "to the maximum extent possible, consistent with the safety of the force under his orders." All was not a military success as the British force on 2 April had to withdrawal back across the Jordan River. Unfortunately, losses on the western front forced the War Office to draw upon the EEF for reinforcements. Relying on concentration, surprise and speed, Allenby planned his 1918 breakthrough along the coast. Continuing to use diaries and letters to support the narration, the author gives a brief but excellent account of Allenby's operations from the capture of Jerusalem to the Turks surrender. Large numbers of prisoners (approaching 40,000) plus shortages of food, medicine and medical staff brought to the EEF death from disease; in the EEF 2,158 died from disease while only 453 battle deaths were suffered in October and November 1918.
In the CONCLUSION, the author states "....you were more likely to survive the war if you served in the EEF rather than in the BEF." "A lower casualty rate, however, did not make Egypt and Palestine, where physical discomfort overshadowed death, a `picnic'." The author further states the Tommies, most of whom were Territorials, were angered by comments that they were lucky to have served in the Middle East. They had passed with flying colors a long campaign against a worthy foe in a test of endurance and stamina. Furthermore, their combat was of critical diplomatic importance. As Allenby succinctly
stated "....if you lose Egypt, you lose the Empire which hinges thereon...."
One can only speculate on the probable tragic results if the Allies had won on the western front but the British had lost Egypt and the Suez Cannel. This is a well researched and well written work. The reader will gain valuable insights regarding war in the Middle East.
Sand, sun and scorpions.......2006-07-19
Most histories of World War I tend to ignore the British army's Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) and its battle against the Turks in Palestine. While this theater of war was treated by the powers-that-be as a "sideshow", to the men fighting and dying in the Middle East it was a real war. Conditions there were different from those in France. Trench warfare was not the norm and the soldiers had to combat, not only the enemy, but broiling sun during the day, chilly temeratures at night, shifting sand, dangerous insects, and the incessant attack of flies. This book retells a story of courage and effort in a climate that was really foreign to most of the EEF. We follow them from Egypt, across the Sinai, through Gaza, up to Jerusalem and then farther North as Turkey's resistance collapsed, and the war began to come to an end. Anyone interested in the "complete" history of World War I, in all of its varied aspects, should read this book.

Book Description
The print makers of the Renaissance were of particular interest to 18th-and early 19th-century Russian collectors. This book provides the best examples from the collection in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. There is an overview of the work of German, Flemish, French, and Italian Masters such as Albrecht Durer, Hans Leonhard, Shaufelein, Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein the Younger, Pieter von der Hayden, and Baccio Baldini, as well as them any delightful engravings produced by anonymous craftsmen. The first half of the book is devoted to a detailed description and analysis of the prints, including whatever deatils are available of their provenance. There are brief histories of the ngravers and, where applicable, the painting from which the engravings were made. The second half of the book contains plates of the engravings and woodcuts themselves, all reproduced in their original colors.

The male Emporer penguin goes without food for two months to keep an egg warm between his feet and belly... the African Honey Bird leads humans to beehives in order to share in the bounty (it wants the wax, not the honey). Birds do the strangest things! I remember loving this book as a child (along with Animals do the Strangest Things) and was glad to find a copy in a used bookstore to read my own child. It is still just as fascinating as I had remembered! I wish Scholastic would reprint this series.

An added plus is your child (or the one you're babysitting) will learn about birds, without realizing he's learning and that's the way it should be, learning should be fun. From Ostriches to Woodpeckers, birds do the strangest things that captivate children and this book will captivate yours.
