Manual for using older Hasselblad cameras........2004-01-22
Before Wildi's The Hasselblad Manual came on the scene and the various editions became the bible for Hasselblad users, there was Freytag's The Hasselblad Way. This tome covers the use of and accessories for the Hasselblad SLRs and SWCs of the 50s, 60s and 70s. This book is a good place to start if you are trying to use one of the olders Hasselblad cameras with the older C type lenses and accessories. For one example, this book explains which ends of the dual cable release go to which end on the old style bellows. Now I can reliable get the lens shutter and the camera shutter working in the proper sequence for macro work. There are many little nuggets like this that no longer have a place with the more modern focus of the newer books. So if you have a 500 or 2000 series Hasselblad camera, this book can help you utilize all the potential of those cameras better.

Excellent.......2007-05-06
I am not exactly sure why this book has never been reviewed. I found it in a public library. It is superb. I am doing a cost of capital project, and I happened to have checked this book out before. I found that it summed up many things from all the finance classes I have taken, including the assumptions that are always used in finance theory. Some people just take it that these assumptions are always correct. Obviously this is not so. I will not go into detail--just buy the book. I will, and this shows how it is really a good idea for an author to send out books to public libraries. I would not have known about this otherwise, and this is the first review of Amazon--which is another good source to find out about unknown books. Sometimes you can find out things from publisher's description on Amazon, but this is all very time-consuming.

Book Description
This book by an eminent expert offers a thoughtful debate toward historical and current perspectives on global security and economic issues, the emergence of new trends and emphasizes the need for multilateralism. The author argues that the US government has blundered into a situation where it has alienated much of the rest of the world, and the remedial measures involve the roles of key multilaterals. It is argued that the US constitution rests on a matter of manners, rather like a sobriety pledge.

Book Description
This first book of a three-volume study examines the way trade policies in developing countries affect the level and composition of employment. There is special emphasis on the effects of import substitution policies that attempt to make a country self-sufficient by producing local substitutes for imports, as compared with policies that further the expansion of imports.
Ten countries are studied: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, the Ivory Coast, Pakistan, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uruguay. The contributors to the volume analyze the link between trade strategies and employment within a common framework, and the analyses of trade policy include the level and structure of protection, the relation of trade policy to labor demand, the labor intensiveness of trade, and the extent of distortions in factor markets and their effects on trade.

I LOVE This Book!.......2007-05-10
This is such a practical, loving and very kind book for how to enjoy your child's toddler stage. It contains all kinds of suggestions for making life fun for both you and your tot -- all surrounded with lots of hugs and comforting. The sleep, feeding, potty training, and other advice seems spot on. It also offers lots of British-y nursery rhymes and classic book and toy suggestions. I highly recommend it to parents with 1- to 3-year-olds.
A True Gem -- full of wise advice and sweet illustrations.......2007-01-20
Classy hardcover guide to parenting with plenty of sound advice. Beats all those paperback 'supernanny' type guides hands-down. This one is from a professional who knows her stuff, not a puffed up overnight TV personality. Starts at 6 months and includes all the basics, plus fun recipes and advice. A nice gift for a new mother
Brimming with Common Sense.......2006-11-03
I admit that I laughed a little when I first saw this book. Perfectly happy children? I flipped through a little, though, and took it home. The author has been a nanny for 18 years, her recipe for good childcare is "provide the safety and security of a familiar routine, set clear limits and boundaries in order to make them feel loved and cared for and to teach respect, and, most importantly, make it fun and play together." She breaks the book down into 6 months-1 year, 1 year to 2 1/2 and 2 1/2 to 5. My child is already 1 so I didn't read all the first part but she lists 10 steps to a routine, suggestions for introducing table food, games to play, etc. I do not agree with the "cry it out" sleep method but this did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. The rest seemed very common sense, but sometimes you're so sleep deprived you want something down on paper to give you a routine to stick to. The toddler section was also good, I particularly like her recipes for toddlers and "Tips for Fussy Non-eaters." Though I am devoted to attachment parenting, it does not really conflict with her philosophy (except for the cry-it-out thing and I realize parents all have strong feelings one way or another--and even she says to distinguish between actual hysterical crying and "oscar-worthy performances" and that if the child is sick and miserable to bring her to bed with you) and actually abuts nicely, the whole organic food, prepared yourself, making bed a positive association with lots of snuggles, playing with them but also reading the baby's signs for when they're done playing, hungry, tired, etc. Her philosophy seems to be a routine that is flexible "within reason." She says "it is important to remember never to compare your child with others. You have a unique, individual child who was born with a temperament and personality that you are patiently nurturing. There are no right and wrong ages for them to develop, just guidelines that you can follow. All you can do is teach and assist them, and trust that they will accomplish what they need to in their own time." This book is chock full of specific and sensible information and has lots of ideas with regards to play, discipline, potty training, nutrition, and much more. I would certainly gift it at a baby shower (perhaps with a more mainstream first 5 years books like Dr. Sears Baby Book) as it is gorgeous and a very pleasant read, interspersed with quotes to begin each new section. Don't dismiss this because it looks fluffy, this is a gem!
Book Description
More than forty years ago the Central Intelligence Agency began a top-secret covert action campaign designed to hold Indonesia's left-leaning President Sukarno's feet to the fire and prevent a strategic crossroad from falling into the communist camp. In a fast-paced, engrossing narrative evoking the novels of John LeCarré and Graham Greene, the authors provide the first unclassified, detailed case study of an operation that has escaped public scrutiny for decades.
Customer Reviews:
Always up to something!.......2000-03-19
It's true, the US is always up to something both at home and abroad. Sometimes misadventures...sometimes adventures...but always interesting. Other books that are very interesting, if in different ways, are "Black Hawk Down," by Mark Bowden, and "Danger Close," by Mike Yon.
The truth IS stranger than fiction.......2000-01-11
"Feet to the Fire" is a well documented, unbiased account of CIA shenanigans in Indonesia during a brief period in the 1950's. (At least it seems to me to be well documented and unbiased but I have no first-hand knowledge of any of the events described.) To me, the story is fantastic and so is the cast: scheming Indonesian politicians, indecisive Indonesian colonels, CIA employees cast from the Felix Leiter mold, CIA contractors playing cowboys and Indians with very dangerous toys, a prevaricating ambassador, and gray-haired old men in Washington pulling the strings.
Of special interest to me were the detailed, almost day-by-day descriptions of events put together by the authors from as many sources as they could access. They begin to give a picture of a "day in the life" of at least some people involved in covert action, with secret supply missions by the Navy, flights to clandestine air strips, a sub popping up off the coast of Sumatra to rescue five CIA men, and a C-46 flying another bunch to safety at Clark AFB. As an American who has lived overseas for many years and met such people, I have long been curious about just what they do. (You can't ask them.)
No individual is portrayed in great depth and it is just as well since most are rather unappealing, coming off as either connivers or flakes, or both. One character that did catch my attention was Fravel "Jim" Brown, a CIA careerist who was present when rebels he was supporting were captured by government paratroopers taking an airfield. He walked up to the paratroopers' commander, introduced himself as "Brown from Caltex," made some small talk, then slipped away. A few days and hundreds of kilometers away Brown was in a rebel-held port as it too was captured, by the same paratroopers. Once again he slipped away. Is there a name for that personality trait, extremely valuable for people in certain professions, that combines chutzpah with blarney?
As an American living in Indonesia, I found the book interesting and very readable. However, I suspect that readers with no knowledge of Indonesian political history or geography will find the narrative a bit tedious unless they are fervent espionage afficionados.
Fascinating, crucial history.......1999-12-25
The real story of Sukarno's reign in Indonesia has been largely forgotten in the West, but I for one continue to be interested in the 1965 military coup, as I don't think any book I've yet read has got to the bottom of that tangled plot. "Feet to the Fire" covers the CIA's efforts in 1957-58 to exert pressure on Sukarno by supporting rebels in Sumatra -- "supporting" seems too mild a word when virtually the only casualties inflicted came as a result of American air-power, which was, under Allen Dulles, meant to be deniable but was not. An American pilot was shot down, kept prisoner until 1962. The history recounted here starts slowly, as perhaps a few too many Indonesian names are thrown at the reader early on, but things clear up fairly soon, and the story really does become quite gripping. And this is history that has never before been revealed! Some of the notes are worth pursuing in the back, also, by the way.
