Not only for architects.......2007-09-13
I bought this book because I wanted to have a look at old Cairo, this part of the city that has been unspoiled by time and, unfortunately, neglected by men. I think the Egyptian Government should do something to restore and exploit these buildings for the sake of Cairo's beauty. The pictures are nice and the texts are mainly for those who have an architectural interest for Cairo's past. I am not an architect, though, and I enjoyed the book - perhaps because I love this city very much.

The beautiful photographs of the belle epoque buildings of Cairo fairly jump off the pages at you. This lovely, understated book should be a guide for architecture and restoration students and buffs. This is a great gift book for the right people.

El libro intenta responder al desafio actual al que se enfrentan las empresas, anticipar y responder a la competencia con la finalidad de estar posicionadas de cara al nuevo siglo y obtener ventajas comparativas y estrategias exitosas de negocios.
La finalidad del libro es permitir una correcta evaluacion de proyectos. Enfoca las tecnicas tradicionales de evaluacion de proyectos y los enfoques mas recientes para posibilitar la implementacion de las mismas. Los ejercicios permiten analizar, comprobar y resolver en forma practica las teorias enunciadas.
El contenido del libro se presenta en 7 capitulos: Metodos para el Flujo de caja descontado, Rentas en Ambientes Competitivos, Compromiso y Flexibilidad, Posicionamiento, Sustentacion, Flexibilidad y Proceso.
Las decisiones triviales se prestan para un analisis minucioso y acabado. Es interesante el planteo de cómo se puede calcular exactamente si es mas barato hacer 1000 fotocopias o 1000 impresiones offset. Por lo que analizarlas suele dar a los ejecutivos una sensacion sumamente placentera de precision. Las decisiones mas estrategicas, como invertir en mercados inestables por ejemplo, son mucho mas complejas. Para analizarlas hay que predecir el futuro incierto en innumerables aspectos: las demandas futuras, el comportamiento de la competencia, las tecnologias que estaran disponibles, las politicas economicas que se implementaran, la cultura del pais, ...
Para mejorar las probabilidades de éxito, los ejecutivos deben concentrarse en las decisiones estrategicas porque son dificiles de tomar y tienen un impacto desproporcionadamente alto en la operación de la organización. Otro de los desafios que enfrentan los directivos de corporaciones es el de evaluar decisiones estrategicas en mercados globales altamente inciertos y competitivos como los de hoy.
Se destaca el desarrollo con amplitud de los dos criterios basicos para enfrentar decisiones estrategicas, las tecnicas de flujo de caja descontado propuestas por los economistas financieros y los esquemas de estrategia competitiva. En la practica estos dos metodos no estan integrados: por una parte, se implementan proyectos con flujo de caja negativo por razones de estrategia competitiva y, por otra se desestiman proyectos con flujo de caja positivo por no alcanzar la estrategia de la empresa. Sostiene que todas las grandes empresas americanas utilizan metodos de flujo de caja para evaluar decisiones de inversion y desinversion.
Se presentan esquemas de analisis de inversiones que simplifican y resumen estos metodos mayormente utilizados a la vez que integra nuevos elementos que buscan corregir los aspectos mas criticados de su practica. El proposito es reducir la brecha existente entre las herramientas para la toma de decisiones entregadas por la literatura de estrategia competitiva y la financiera.
Uno de los aportes mas novedosos radica en mostrar como los esquemas de analisis de estrategia competitiva pueden ser integrados a las tecnicas tradicionales de evaluacion de proyectos y de valorizacion de opciones reales. La originalidad del enfoque no impide de modo alguno que a lo largo del estudio y comprension del texto se analicen los temas tradicionalmente asociados a los metodos de flujo de caja.
Con profundidad y claridad respecto de la flexibilidad, se amplia el marco de analisis al relajar el supuesto de que todas las decisiones se toman asociadas tanto a la alternativa con proyecto como a la sin este, se toman al inicio y que estas no son revisadas, y muestra como evaluar proyectos en un ambiente de incertidumbre y en un contexto de flexibilidad en el cual hay decisiones y revisiones a lo largo de todo el horizonte del proyecto. Como estimar el impacto de un proyecto en el valor de flexibilidad de la empresa, en el valor de las opciones de revisar decisiones a la luz de la nueva informacion.
Flexibilidad, incertidumbre y aprendizaje estan relacionados. El aprendizaje ocurre cuando la nueva informacion reduce la incertidumbre. A mayor incertidumbre y posibilidades de aprendizaje, mayor es el valor de flexibilidad de una empresa.
Queda muy claro que en cada uno de los ciclos de la evaluacion, el analisis de sensibilidad ayuda a decidir si hay antecedentes suficientes para realizar el compromiso o si es preferible elaborar mas algun aspecto de la evaluacion antes de tomar la decision. Asimismo manifiesta que los costos de estudiar mas el proyecto; costos directos y los costos de atrasar aun mas su partida; deben comprarse con los beneficios de este refinamiento. Pues el tamaño de estos beneficios depende del grado en que los nuevos antecedentes permiten reducir la incertidumbre, y del impacto que una mayor incertidumbre tiene en la calidad de las decisiones tomadas en la empresa. En definitiva un analisis de sensibilidad que permita apreciar la robustez de las conclusiones de la evaluacion.
El aporte más novedoso consiste en mostrar cómo los esquemas de análisis de estrategia competitiva pueden ser integrados a las técnicas tradicionales de evaluación de proyectos y de valorización.
Los temas incluidos pueden ser de gran utilidad para los ejecutivos al formular sus estrategias competitivas, ya que, junto con los conceptos tradicionales integra elementos novedosos.
Compromiso: en recursos y capacidades, explorando entre otras cosas los fundamentos e implicancias en la administración flexible de los compromisos, donde los ejecutivos deben aprender a distinguir entre recursos especializados a la empresa y al uso;
Posicionamiento, que, entre otros elementos, requiere la búsqueda de un método exacto que permita estimar la participación de mercado de la empresa, una de las tareas más difíciles de este tipo de análisis;
Sustentación, que, ante la fugacidad del éxito de un proyecto en la ventaja competitiva de una empresa, hace necesaria una evaluación de los proyectos de inversión que permita revertir la tendencia al deterioro del posicionamiento, comparando el grado y velocidad de la disminución de la ventaja competitiva de los productos e integrando la alternativa sin proyecto;
Flexibilidad, análisis que se puede incorporar a la evaluación del impacto de un proyecto ante el hecho de que, en ambientes competitivos e inciertos, las decisiones asociadas a un proyecto son, en algún grado, reversibles, es decir, que las buenas noticias pueden conducir a la expansión del proyecto y las malas noticias pueden llevar a su abandono.

Accurate forecasts are crucial to a revenue management system. Poor estimates of demand lead to inadequate inventory controls and sub-optimal revenue performance. Forecasting for airline revenue management systems is inherently difficult. Competitive actions, seasonal factors, the economic environment, and constant fare changes are a few of the hurdles that must be overcome. In addition, the fact that most of the historical demand data is censored further complicates the problem. This dissertation examines the challenge of forecasting for an airline revenue management system in the presence of censored demand data.
The number of seats an airline can sell on a flight is determined by the booking limits set by the revenue management system. An airline continues to accept reservations in a fare class until the booking limit is reached. At that point, the airline stops selling seats in that fare class-It also stops collecting valuable data. Demand for travel in that fare class may exceed the booking limit, but the data does not reflect this. So the data is censored or "constrained" at the booking limit.
While some models exist that produce unbiased forecasts from censored data, it is preferable to "unconstrain" the censored observations so that they represent true demand. Then, the forecasting model may be chosen based on the structure of the problem rather than the nature of the data. This dissertation analyzed the improvement in forecast accuracy that results from estimating demand by unconstraining the censored data.
Little research has been done on unconstraining censored data for revenue management systems. Airlines tend to either ignore the problem or use very simple ad hoc methods to deal with it. A literature review explores the current methods for unconstraining censored data. Also, practices borrowed from areas outside of revenue management are adapted to this application. For example, the Expectation-Maximization (EM) and other imputation methods were investigated. These methods are evaluated and tested using simulation and actual airline data. An extension to the EM algorithm that results in a 41% improvement in forecast accuracy is presented.

Weak guide to great area.......2005-07-12
Arizona is the dream destination for many a bird watcher, casual or compulsive. As a birder living in Arizona, I've visited most areas of the state in many seaons.
This book, by someone who neither lives in Arizona nor apparently has much birding experience(and may not have consulted any Arizona birders) gets my vote for the worst state birding guide I've ever seen. Many great birding areas are omitted while more than a few of the areas included are of marginal interest, at least to serious birders. Information for each area covered is usually superficial. Some birds in the photos are misidentified. Area photos are dull. How did a book like this ever get published? Falcon has published much better guides to other areas.
There are much better books to buy if you want to go birding in Arizona, most notably the Tucson Audubon and ABA/Lane guides to southeastern Arizona, the Maricopa Audubon and Rupp guides to the Phoenix area and the Northern Arizona Audubon guides to Sedona/Verde Valley and Flagstaff/Grand Canyon.
