The paper back is done completely in black and white. How sad and frustrating not to be able to see the tiles in their original colour. I am really sorry I tried to save money by buying this cheap "booklet" (32 small 6"x8" pages) instead of splurging on the hardback, which is in colour. Content was fine and informative. Order placed May 31st with BoookZine not received 'til June 28th .

Beautiful photographs, survey history...........2000-09-01

One of the more famous 'landscape' Dutch tiles shows a man in a small boat sailing away from the viewer, up the Issel or some other river in the Netherlands. The rounded end of his boat lifts out of the water as the wind billows the sails and tilts the craft. The river surface is slighly rippling in the gentle breeze. In the distance lays a town, perhaps Deventer. When I look at this tile I feel transported to a place and time long ago.

The Dutch produced the greatest painters in the world, and many of their works hang in museums, or in private collections out of the reach of mere mortals. Sometimes something is so beautiful you want to own it, or at least possess it a short while. What to do? Buy a tile. Dutch tiles were frequently copied from paintings and like paintings they depict landscapes, interior domestic scenes, flowers (especially tulips), ships at sea and all sorts of wonderous things.

Hans van Lemmen has compiled a nice overview of the history of Dutch tilemaking. He says it was natural for a people who had been occupied by the Spanish for a long time to have become aware of the 'Hispano-Moresque' tradition of tile making. But many other factors conspired to make tile making the "signature form of decorative art" of the Dutch. For one thing, the little country has many river banks and lots of clay. For another, during the 16th Century, many Flemish tile artisans moved to the Netherlands to set up shop and enjoy the expanding Dutch economy. Another major factor was the incredible growth of a middle class that wanted to tiles for home use.

These uses included lining fire places, mantles, and the wall areas around them, as well as the areas where candles sat, in order to prevent house fires. The Dutch also lined their cellers to prevent water seeping into them. Areas exposed to much wear and tear, such as passageways, staircases, and doors were also covered with tiles. And, in a country where hygiene is a defining national characteristic tiles were important accessories in kitchens because they were easy to clean.

van Lemmen covers about 400 years of tilemaking, with most of his emphasis on the "Golden Age" of the 16th-17th centuries. The book contains a nice balance of history and photographs of tiles and 'in situ' settings of Dutch tiles in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. This is a book for relative beginners, but beautiful enough for anyone who loves Dutch art.

Excellent and beautiful book on Dutch tiles........1999-10-14

Hans van Lemmen has put together a beautiful and very readablebook on Dutch tiles. "Delftware Tiles" is well researchedand lavishly illustrated with color photos of all kinds of Dutch tiles from the 16th century to the present. No Delft or tile collector's library is complete without this book. It's also a great coffee table book. The 32 page paperback is an earlier and completely different work by van Lemmen -- it's a good primer on Delftware tiles, but it's much smaller and all in black & white.

The book works best if read from front to back; it's too wordy to work as a reference guide or manual (except for the appendix on keyboard shortcuts). The book's best feature is its numerous QuickTime video tutorials on the accompanying CD-ROM, which cover key concepts of Flash 4 usage. The videos demonstrate the construction of Flash movies from scratch. And, since the source file discussed in each movie is also included, readers can go back and forth between QuickTime and Flash, rebuilding or adapting the file for themselves. This comes as close as possible to replicating the indelible learning process one usually gets only in "on-the-job training."

Flash 4! also takes the reader on a thorough tour of the application, beginning with chapters explaining Flash's popularity and why the plug-in is now a standard accessory in browsers. The authoring environment is outlined in full detail and includes the major aspects of creating animations, from making artwork with drawing, text, and sound tools to the underlying logic behind Flash's extensive interactive capabilities.

The book's slow pacing becomes a great advantage in later chapters when the animations and the interactivity get more complex. The sample projects show some of the most popular tricks used on Web sites today, and there's even a source file for a Whack-a-Mole game.

Good for starting a fire.......2001-08-16

The authors express when creating a Flash program, organization is the key. This book is far from organized. They spend too much time talking about things instead of doing them. Self-help books should have tons of visuals and tutorials, this lacks in both areas. The authors should have sought self-help in organizational skills before selling this book to the masses. One more thing, and this is to all authors of self-help books in any area and that is put your books in a spiral notebook form, its a real pain trying to keep the book open and do the tutorials at the same time. I won't torch it as of yet, but Chicago winters can be brutal.

Laundry list of commands lacks depth.......2001-07-25

I felt compelled to write a review because my experience with the book and the "interactive" tutorials on the CD-ROM was mediocre. Take the high praise you see from others, especially that which is not really backed up by specific examples, with a grain of salt.

First, about me: I'm a new Flash user who has experience creating multimedia presentations in Director. I've also taught myself Photoshop using self-help books (which, by the way, were better than this one).

The authors have taken the easy way out, giving the user a simple list of commands/actions in a reference-style manner -- yet recommend that the user read the book from front to back. This presents a problem because to read the book from front to back is boring, yet to use it as a reference gives no additional insight into the best way to create a flash project. Plus, it would take forever to complete each mini example if one were to follow the book with Flash open. Who really wants to go through the menu options of "How to rotate an object" or "How to format text?" These need to be given in context.

For example, the authors detail how to Cut or Copy an object very precisely, step by step. Useful, perhaps, if one catchs it the first time. But what if one didn't? The tutorials don't necessarily flow from the chapter and won't address everything you've learned. A great example comes right away: The Chapter 2 Quicktime tutorial includes Motion Tweening animation, yet the authors wait until chapter 10 to even address animation with paragraphs titled "How Animation Works" and "Understanding the Timeline." Obviously not very smart.

It appears that Franklin and Patton have taken the easy way out with the tutorials. These tutorials are pure movies intended for one to watch and follow at the end of each chapter, with a simultaneous Flash project on the side mimicking their actions. Where's the backup documentation? There is none. Instead, the Quicktime tutorials should be written down, progressively incorporating new tasks and skills. Did I learn from the Quicktime tutorials? Yes. But I now find myself wanting to use them as references -- and using a movie as a reference is impossible. The Flash files are there, too, but that's like trying to learn how to build an engine by examining the car after it's rolled off the assembly line. You can do it, but it takes extra work! WHY the car was built that way is still a mystery.

In summary, the authors have done a good job in writing a Flash How-to dictionary, but leave the user finishing the book without a clear sense of how to put a whole project together from beginning to end.

Un libro interesante para aprender a usar flash 4, pero que cae en decir que es para usuarios avanzados cosa que no es tal, pues solamente llega -a mi parecer- a usuarios intermedios.

Posee un buen método de enseñanza para quienes poseen nociones sobre el programa y para aquellos que no tienen idea sobre el, sin embargo si ya sabes usar el programa no te recomiendo este libro, a menos que tengas vacios técnicos.

This Book is probably the best book for Flash 4, It has exellent tutorial's on the CD. Everything from creating basic graphics to advanced action script is covered.

Watching the paint dry.......2001-04-15

Very dry reading. This is the 2nd time trying to go through this book and I remember why I didn't get through it the 1st time. It makes you get fustrated at the program. Very bad teaching style.

Beware which version is purchased! I purchased a "new" copy of version 4. (The version number was not advertised.) The current version number is 8 and it appears to be only available from the current publisher, McGraw Hill as an $85- paperback. If you are not taking a class the older version may be ok but I am in a class.

I am in the financial services field and a self learner, too. I wanted this book for my business library and to help me brush up on financial analysis. This book did not disappoint me. It is very well written, although I would recommend a newer edition.

Excellent introductory book on Analysis for FM.......2006-04-08

It is one of the best books I have ever used for course reference. One of the reviewers (on the back cover) taught me the Corporate Finance course at HBS with this book as the reference text and it was a great learning experience. I also find this book as a great reference material for my CFA exam. Can't wait to get my hands on the next edition.

an excellent introductory text.......2006-01-04

Unlike most textbooks the book by Higgins can actually be an engaging read. It doesn't get into too many technical details on any of the subject matters covered, but includes some interesting sections that I haven't found in other general (and much heavier) financial management books. For instance, I liked the appendix on the venture capital method of valuation and the explanation on how venture capitalists arrive at a required percentage ownership given multiple rounds of financing.

It was used as a background text for a case study course that I took as part of an MS in finance program and I believe most of us enjoyed it..

Great book for my introduction to finance. This is what the professor in my MBA program used. The book is easy to read and the author has a self-deprecating sense of humor to boot.

The best "first picture book" for babies.......2004-11-17

I am surprised that I am the first one who is rating this book. I am a momther of a 9-mon-old, I've spent about $1,000 in Amonzon.com to order all kinds of encyclopic picture books for my little one because I want to start early education for him. And I wish I bought this book first so that I could have saved most of my money.

My baby loves this book very much as I hold him on my lap and show him the picture of every animal. The book has one big picure and the name of the animal on the left page, and simple explanation and another picture of this animal on the right page. For only a week, my baby has already know very well of these animals, and I am now searching for the second similar books.
