This is a comprehensive book, complete with graphics that pretty much starts off as Building Security 101 and gets more intricate throughout the book. This is s good guidebook for any decision makers who need a reference manual.

Alwyn Crawshaw's techniques simplify your paintings.......2005-01-09
I admire Mr. Crawshaw's techniques in many ways; he gives you methods to simplify how you paint people, boats and animals. He's known as an equestrian painter, so it's a bit disappointing that there isn't more in this book about painting horses (perhaps he's leaving that for a separate volume.) I also find Crawshaw's palette a bit dull--he goes for the natural look of muted greens and browns and blues--very realistic but not as exciting as the bright tropical colors that are now more in vogue in painting. This is in the true English tradition of watercolor. Nevertheless, I find that I've learned more by doing Crawshaw's exercises for painting things like trees and sheep than from many other books or videos. To rate this book; visually--it's not so exciting. Technique-wise, if you try out some of these techniques, your brushwork for certain details and compositions will become simpler and less worked-over. Recommended for that reason.

Dated but Amusing Collection of Previously Uncollected Stuff.......2001-11-17
People Have More Fun Than Anybody collects 19 of Thurber's stories/articles/letters, several cartoons, and one recipe that have been previously uncollected. Surely this is a classification that would have amused Thurber no end--are they now "non-uncollected" stories? In "Help! Help! Another Classificationization" Thurber sets himself against exactly this mindset. And frankly, at this late date in the late humorist's career, such a criteria for inclusion assures that the book will not bring us the best of his work.
However, Thurber is almost always witty, and even though some of the pieces are dated and irrelevant, all of the writings evoke at least a smile. The cartoons don't fare as well, some of them being merely puzzling. The end notes tell us that some cartoons had different captions in their original stages. The most wildly different is a picture of a woman leaning forward and speaking intently to a man. The published caption is "If I told you a dream I had about you, Mr. Price, would you promise not to do anyting about it unless you really want to?", but the earlier caption on Thurber's original drawing was "If they never found the husband's body could they do anything to the wife?"
This is essentially a collection for the die-hard Thurber fan (who are rather few on the ground these days, it seems) only. Others will probably do better to read The Thurber Carnival.

useful overview industrial restructuring CEECs.......2000-04-04
I used this book in a graduate course that I taught on European Union Enlargement with the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs). I found the collection of papers on the changing nature of trade flows betweeen EU and CEECs (toward higher quality products), foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, industrial restructuring of CEEC industry on sectoral levels and how that ties in with restructuring of EU industries informative and useful. The political economy papers I also found interesting.
I especially like the point the editors make that, viewed in a dynamic context, CEEC industries could be integrated with EU industries in a longer-term perspecive. The idea is to use each others' competitive advantages rather than considering the CEEC industries as low-cost competition, and setting restructuring of both EU and CEEC industries in a - in principle at least- mutually beneficial dynamic process. Of course there are a number of real dangers in this process (creating dual economies and short-term unemployment, increasing rather than diminishing sectoral and regional development gaps etc). Clearly developments are uneven and not smooth and some of the papers clearly point that out, but I think the basic approach makes a lot of sense and reinforces the integrationist ideas of e.g. the European Commission. My only problem with the book is the rather old data that are sometimes used, which in this context is even worse since in a situation of such massive and fast restructuring the relevant data 'age' even faster than normal, but i know that to some extent that is unavoidable.
Good reference book and well-written, avoiding technical jargon.

The editors of this collection define relational wealth as resources created for a firm through its internal relations among and with employees, as well as its external alliances and reputation. Relational wealth is an intangible asset that successful firms optimize and leverage. There are several aspects of relational wealth that are the levers for managing the level of wealth for a firm: trust, knowing who knows what, reputation, and infrastructure. Relational wealth is not the same thing as human capital--the knowledge, skills, and abilities that employees possess. Rather it derives from the ability of the firm and its employees to access that knowledge, including how well they work together as a team.

The primary reason for a business reader to undertake this challenging book would be to discover new perspectives on attracting/retaining talent, and on the value of internal relationships in building competitive advantage. The book is not written for a mass business audience. The academic writing style could cause many readers to give up on it. However, that would be a mistake-particularly if one is looking for ideas that are not yet popularized.
The editors of Relational Wealth are Carrie Leana of the University of Pittsburgh and Denise Rousseau of Carnegie Mellon University. The two co-authored the very readable introductory and concluding chapters, and also joined with other co-authors on several other portions. The material included is a combination of theory, research summaries, and opinion.
The Book's Core Ideas
Leana and Rousseau define relational wealth as the value created by and for a firm through its internal relations among and with employees, as well as its external alliances and reputation. Relational wealth is an attribute of the organization; its value accrues to the organization directly, and only indirectly to individual members.
There are several aspects of relational wealth that the authors believe lead to measurable value. These include:
Trust-The positive expectations that firm members have of each other's
intentions and behavior. If trust is low, organizations build redundancies
into their systems. If trust is high, members spend less time negotiating
with each other, lowering transaction costs.
Knowing Who Knows What. Where organization memory is lacking, due to
work force turnover or other instability, members have difficulty accessing
important information. Sometimes costs are remarkably high in inefficiencies
and accidents.
Reputation. A firm held in high regard in the broader community has advantages
accessing highly qualified employees. Reputation creates the capacity to form
new relationships with different people.
The ability of a firm to realize the value of relational wealth is seen as depending upon its ability to balance flexibility with stability in the workforce, i.e., the need for short-term results with the long-term employee commitment. In the main body of the book, contributors discuss various aspects of this dilemma in employment policy. A few chapters highlighted here seem particularly relevant.
A few of the most thought-provoking highlights are:
· A helpful summary of research relating work force diversity issues and
employee commitment
· A timely critique of the effectiveness of corporate mentoring programs
· Observations about cynicism concerning the use of teams
· Elaboration of one of the concepts associated with relational wealth-
the "commons" --which refers to the resources shared by a group
· An argument for a shift in the way firms and investors keep score-away
from short-term financials and toward non-financial indicators
The Book's Other Message
Many of the book's contributors blend social criticism with their social science. A point of view seemingly held by most is that U.S. corporations generally have done poorly in fostering relational wealth, and that a new dose of government regulation will do us all some good. This theme appears in various chapters, where we find such observations as these:
"Without consistent government intervention, it is unlikely that most employers
will change their historical indifference to the problem of a growing underclass."
(p. 190)
"..corporate executives...may have little regard for what happens in the
communities in which their funds are invested" Therefore government should
create "exit barriers for disinvestment" and other requirements. (p.222)
There is a need for "meaningful penalties to induce firms to comply with
existing labor laws." (p.289)
This brings to light another reason for reading Relational Wealth. The contributors are respected academicians who are listened to by governmental leaders and students. Business leaders need to hear and understand their viewpoints.
Summary
Relational Wealth is not an easy read. Many business readers could find themselves in philosophical disagreement with the authors. However, the book contains some new ways of framing crucial, continuing issues in the field of Human Resources. Practitioners ready to go beyond the popular sources in search of original ideas might find this book rewarding.

If you are a student of the heavy Tiger Battalions or simply armored warfare during WWII, this is a "must-have" book. Like all of the books in this series, there are detailed action accounts, personal recollections, charts, and best-of-all, outstanding photos gathered by veterans of the batallion that have never been published before. An outstanding addition to any WWII library and a suberbly high quality book. I highly recommend acquiring all of the hardbound books in this series before they're gone. If you're a Tiger tank history buff, don't think twice, the book is definitely worth the expense.

Outstanding Introduction to the Waffen-SS.......2007-06-23
Bruce Quarrie's "Hitler's Samurai" (rev. 3d ed.) is an outstanding description of the formation, uniforms, equipment, and battles of the Waffen-SS. The writing is clear, precise, and objective. One wishes that he had been commissioned to write a full-fledged general history of these units instead of writing about them piecemeal in a series of separate works (e.g., Hitler's Teutonic Knights, Lightning Death).
Three things, however, almost prevented a five-star rating:
First, the text repeatedly refers to a bibliography but the book does not include a bibliography (at least not in the third edition).
Second, the author repeatedly (and somewhat annoyingly) refers the reader to other works of his on related topics, which disrupts the flow of the text.
Third, the pictures often lack clarity, even for photographic reproductive abilities at the time this edition was first published, over 20 years ago. (The pictures are well chosen and representative but if the point of a work is to provide a pictorial history of a topic then the pictures need to be well-reproduced not just well selected. This edition would have been better served by being printed originally in hardcover with separate picture sections on glossy paper rather than the cheap stock paper used. A hardcover reprint was later done but as reprints are often of lesser quality than the original I purchased the original paperback edition, which, in retrospect, may have been a mistake.)
Despite its flaws, the book is an excellent reference work. There is a reason this book on the Waffen-SS, unlike so many others, sold out when first printed and revised and expanded second and third editions published: It is one of the best general introductions to the Waffen-SS ever written.
Insightful view of Hitler's most fanatical troops.......2006-05-10
This book provides the reader insight into the men, organization and equipment of Hitler's fanatical SS who were undoubtedly not as fanatical as advertized.
Plenty of pictures. Informative reading.
A terrific source of information. A must for history fans........1999-06-21
Bruce Quarrie has done a fine piece of work, with this book. An objective look at the history of the Waffen SS. It shows the armed SS in all its shades. Good selection of photographs help showcase the short, but eventful, history of this group of fighting men, as it should be told. I would, also, reccommend his companion to this title. "Hitler's Teutonic Knights" focuses more on the armored divisions and is another wonderful description of the Waffen SS. Both are a must for WWII fans.

This whole series of combat troops is very good. The Waffen SS in Action, Issue number 3, is fantastic. Not only is the book filled with actual photos of the time. There is very good text on organization and responsabilities. Startes with the genisis and follows the SS growth. You will not put this book down...
