This collection of twenty-one essays, written by colleagues and former students of the architectural historian Spiro Kostof (1936-1991), presents case studies on Kostof's model of urban forms and fabrics. The essays are remarkably diverse: the range includes pre-Columbian Inca settlements, fourteenth-century Cairo, nineteenth-century New Orleans, and twentieth-century Tokyo. Focusing on individual streets around the world and from different historical periods, the collection is an inviting overview of the street as an urban institution.
The theme of the volume is that the street presents itself as the basic structuring device of a city's form and also as the locus of its civilization. Each essay is a detailed investigation of a single urban street with unique historical conditions. The authors' shared concern regarding anthropological, political, and technical aspects of street making coalesce into a critical discourse on urban space. A fitting tribute to Spiro Kostof, this collection will be greatly admired by scholars and general readers alike.

A respected journalist and film critic for Frankfurter Zeitung during the Weimar period, Siegfried Kracauer worked with a more comprehensive concept of cultural modernity than did his friends Bloch, Adorno, and Benjamin. Sensitive to the postwar experience of rapid technological advances and profound cultural transformation, he emphasized the contemporary significance of the documentary imagination. Though he acknowledged that reality is a construction, its modern pluralism suggested to him modalities of objectivity rather than despair of it.

In Critical Realism Dagmar Barnouw explores the connections that Kracauer stated in his last book, History, between the representational modes of photography and historiography, both of them characteristically composite and unstable. Drawing on recent developments in the history and theory of photography andhistoriography, she argues the contemporaneity of Kracauer's thought to late twentieth century cultural modernity.

Siegfried Kracauer started his career with film reviews during the Weimar period in Germany (pre-WW2) and expanded his interests to detailed discussions of film, photography, and history, and the interactions among these disciplines. He was especially interested in how films model themselves to the tastes of their audiences, who in turn, model themselves after films, and how this shapes the evolution of the culture.

Exiled in the 1930s, Kracauer lived for a while in Paris and finally settled in New York. In exile, he viewed himself as a cultural observer, a "time-traveler." He wrote a lot about how history relates to time while photography is in the moment and totally visual.

The book seems to be about Kracauer, but Barnouw says it's not. She says it's about "the significance of his critical realism for cultural modernity."

The Book of White Trash made me laugh out loud. I took it to work, and everyone loved it! Very funny material, and the illustrations are great. We all have a bit of "white trash" in us (no matter what color we are) which makes it just that much more funny. Makes a great gift, too!

Too funny, the best $ I ever spent.This book makes you laugh and then laugh some more. Very true to White Trash, and southern folk in general. Page 34 says it all. The illustrations are incredible !!!

This book finds a little "White Trash" in all of us. Fun to sit & read until you're finished, and this can be accomplished in just a few hours! The illustrations are equally amusing! I can't believe I used to work with this chick! She's sick I tell you, sick! This book was hilarious and truthful. I found myself pausing in the middle of my laughter because although it was funny, it was describing what most of us do and think everyday. Almost an insult but you gotta laugh, we've all been there and she has such a talent for making a joke about it. A must read. Especially the jokes about the inmates!

Based on research about after-school experiences and dilemmas conducted over a four-year period with employed parents and their children, this book draws on the stories these parents and children told--often using their actual words--to emphasize the wide variety of children's after-school arrangements, children's movement over time in and out of different arrangements, and the importance to children of multiple facets of their after-school arrangements, not simply the presence or absence of an adult caretaker. The book also emphasizes that children are not randomly assigned to after-school arrangements. Rather, parents and children struggle to reach optimal solutions to what are often difficult child care dilemmas. To understand these dilemmas, and the diverse strategies that families adopt, one must attend to the individual situations of children as family members understand them.

This book was written to contribute to the development of new family and work policies and practices by illuminating the difficulties families face and their consequences for children. Great Introduction to Antitank Warfare.......2002-12-28

John Weeks' "Men Against Tanks", though perhaps a bit dated right now, is one of the best introductory books on antitank warfare ever written. It's written on just the right level, accessible to the novice with little or no background on the subject, yet with a great deal to offer the professional or advanced "buff". And it's written in Weeks' usual, highly readable style.

Weeks limits himself to ground weapons, and covers the subject quite thoroughly, from the early days of the Great War, through the Bazookas and Panzerfausts and antitank guns of WW2, and ending up with today's (or not quite today's) antitank guided missiles. Also included is an intriguing chapter on the postwar might-have-beens.

I highly recommend this title to anyone interested in the subject!
