Vitruvius' Ten Books of Architecture was the fountainhead of architectural theory in the Italian Renaissance. Offering theoretical and practical solutions to a wide variety of architectural issues, this treatise did not, however, address all of the questions that were of concern to early modern architects. This study examines the Italian Renaissance architect's efforts to negotiate between imitation and reinvention of classicism. Through a close reading of Vitruvius and texts written during the period 1400-1600, Alina Payne identifies ornament as the central issue around which much of this debate focused.

Leonid Pasternak (1862-1945) was an important Russian artist with a reputation as a fine portraitist. This fully illustrated catalogue raisonne covers much of the best of his oeuvre and contains over 2,000 items: oils and tempera, charcoals, chalks, pencil, pen and ink, watercolours and gouaches, etchings and lithographs, and albums. The art historical introduction sets his work in the context of European art, and a biographical sketch has been written in close collaboration with surviving members of the artist's family. Professor Salys's study is based on previously unavailable information from Russian museums, archives, and private collections, as well as Western sources. The broad range of Pasternak's subjects from Russian life the rising middle class and the peasantry, aristocrats and revolutionaries, poets and politicians provides a valuable new source of information for cultural historians and literary scholars alike.

Deerskins and Duffels documents the trading relationship between the Creek Indians in what is now the southeastern United States and the Anglo-American peoples who settled there. The Creeks were the largest native group in the Southeast, and through their trade alliance with the British colonies they became the dominant native power in the area.

The deerskin trade became the economic lifeblood of the Creeks after European contact. This book is the first to examine extensively the Creek side of the trade, especially the impact of commercial hunting on all aspects of Indian society. British trade is detailed here, as well: the major traders and trading companies, how goods were taken to the Indians, how the traders lived, and how trade was used as a diplomatic tool. The author also discusses trade in Indian slaves, a Creek-Anglo cooperation that resulted in the virtual destruction of the native peoples of Florida.

In "Deerskins and Duffels", Kathryn Holland Braund provides a scholarly and easily readable study of the dynamics of the trade relationship between the English and the Creek Indian Nation.

Braund delivers a good overview of the history of the Anglo-Creek trade; from its introduction in the late 17th century, its triumph against its competitors - France and Spain - in the 18th century, and its conclusion in the early 19th century with the removal of the Creeks by the American government.

Importantly, the book shows how that both the British and the Creeks benefitted from their trade relationship. South Carolina and Georgia owe their colony's success to the economic windfall from the trade. Meanwhile, the trade enabled the Creeks to become the preeminent Indian nation of the Southeast at the, sometimes catastrophic, cost of neighboring tribes.

"Deerskins and Duffels" gives an interesting look into the life and business activities of the frontier Indian trader. However, the book's greatest value is its well-researched examination of the Creeks as consumers and how their Nation's demand for goods caused them to create a massive commercial deer harvesting enterprise.

Braund has written a fully documented textbook on the subject of Anglo-Creek trade; but, she has relayed the information in such a way that both the scholar and the casual reader will be well satisfied for having read it.

In recent years, the local dimensions of the labor market have attracted increasing attention from academic analysts and public policy makers alike. There is growing realization that there is no such thing as the national labor market, instead a mosaic of local and regional markets that differ in nature, performance and regulation. Geographies of Labour Market Inequality is concerned with these multiple geographies of employment, unemployment, work and incomes, and their implications for public policy.
The Introduction sets out the case for thinking about the labor market in geographical terms, and discusses some of the challenges confronting labor markets in the contemporary period. In Part Two, the focus is on the processes that produce and reproduce inequalities in employment, unemployment and wages within and between local labor markets. Part Three then explores some of the strategies by which organized labor (unions) and the state are seeking to respond to and ameliorate the uncertainties andinequalities generated by the growing flexibility and fluidity of labor markets.

Author wins survey battle, but loses book war/ skip this one.......2001-10-02

The premise of this book sounded appealing to me: the generals who managed the Vietnam war giving their views on what was done right and what wasn't. And, the author himself was one of those generals. However, in my opinion, this author may have won the battle of getting a broad response to his questionnaire, but he lost the war of delivering a good book presenting an insightful set of conclusions and supporting data.

Here's where I think this author and publisher missed the boat: they designed this book to be more of an academic thesis with a focus on a survey's results and less of an interesting book which took themes from the results and enlarged on those with specific interviews, other supporting data and anecdotes. That might have been a good book. This one really isn't.

Further, the author's data collecting tool, his multiple choice survey, allowed for some fairly close gradations in answers which seemed to blur the results. And, there was no analysis of results sorted by grade of general (1 star input same as 4 star) or what type of command they had. In other words, the author looked for data, the generals were kind enough to mostly reply, and he presented the data. It just wasn't a study or effort that was successful in adding much insight or much of interest to a reader. It's probably a fine book for an Army war college or a West Point course, but not much else.
