The Hidden Image is both a stunning anthology of the male nude and a revealing history of how male sexuality has been portrayed photographically from the earliest daguerreotype self portrait of Hippolyte Bayard to the formalized fantasies of Robert Mapplethorpe.

The 142 photographs include many previously unpublished portraits from both public and private collections in Europe and the United States. They include works by the historical luminaries Edward Weston, May Ray, Imogene Cunningham, and Cecil Beaton and the modern innovators David Hockney, Judy Dater, Dino Pedriali, and Joel Peter Witkin.

Because it is not limited to one photographer or even one genre of photography, The Hidden Image is a record of the changing iconography of the male nude and of the repression, the sublimation, and the taboos surrounding the depiction of the body.

Some of the images, such as those by Weston and Cunningham, are romantic, misty shots of Adonis like figures lounging in painterly landscapes; others, like those of Eadweard Muybridge and Étienne Jules Marey, are multiframe studies of locomotion. Still others are formal poses that treat the male body in abstract sculptural terms. Some of the contemporary photographs depict erotic fantasies; others such as those of Joel Peter Witkin confront us head on with our deepest primal terrors.

Peter Weiermair studied art history at the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna, was curator of the Innsbruck Art Institute, and has been director of the German Photography Museum in Frankfurt since 1980. He has written widely on the history of photography, and has published monographs on Wilhelm von Gloeden, Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar, George Platt Lynes, and Herbert Tobias. He serves on the executive committee of the European Society for the History of Photography.

John W. Budd contends that the turbulence of the current workplace and the importance of work for individuals and society make it vitally important that employment be given "a human face." Contradicting the traditional view of the employment relationship as a purely economic transaction, with business wanting efficiency and workers wanting income, Budd argues that equity and voice are equally important objectives. The traditional narrow focus on efficiency must be balanced with employees' entitlement to fair treatment (equity) and the opportunity to have meaningful input into decisions (voice), he says. Only through a greater respect for these human concerns can broadly shared prosperity, respect for human dignity, and equal appreciation for the competing human rights of property and labor be achieved.

Budd proposes a fresh set of objectives for modern democracies—efficiency, equity, and voice—and supports this new triad with an intellectual framework for analyzing employment institutions and practices. In the process, he draws on scholarship from industrial relations, law, political science, moral philosophy, theology, psychology, sociology, and economics, and advances debates over free markets, globalization, human rights, and ethics. He applies his framework to important employment-related topics, such as workplace governance, the New Deal industrial relations system, comparative industrial relations, labor union strategies, and globalization. These analyses create a foundation for reforming employment practices, social norms, and public policies. In the book's final chapter, Budd advocates the creation of the field of human resources and industrial relations and explores the wider implications of this renewed conceptualization of industrial relations.

Excellent look at the full scope of Employment Relationship.......2004-03-28

John Budd brings into focus something that is not always looked at in the employment relationship. He has brought ideas that helped me better understand why just $$$ is not sufficient in this ever changing world in order to retain good employees. New Human Resouces practices are starting to see this, but not able to explain why this trend is occuring. Budd gives an excellent overview of why employers need to do more than just 'show me the money' in finding and retaining good talent.

I think he develops a key point in talking about employee voice. Employee's need to know they are heard, even if the management can't necessarily do anything about it. If you want to know more, read Budd's book.

There are many helpful diagrams in this book and a good list of suggested reading. It was originally published in 1977 and revised in 1986. There is a tremendous lot of information here. Everything from the benefits of breastfeeding to how to tell the stages of labour. Should be on the bookshelf of every childbirth professional.

"Siege" is the story, as told by the American ambassador to Kuwait, of the four-month ordeal that he and his colleagues faced in staying at their posts despite Saddam Hussein's order that they leave. They were effectively isolated from the rest of the world save for the tenuous radio link they maintained with Washington, and the sporadic visits of unofficial emissaries (e.g. Jesse Jackson, as seen on the cover) and Iraqi officials. Also housed on this compound was a hastily-collected group of American and other western civilians, who were NOT free to leave--for which reason the Embassy refused to close: these civilians had been gathered in as opportunity allowed, to save their being used as human shields in Iraq's defense of the occupation of Kuwait.

"Siege" is also an anthropological analysis of the interactions within this de facto community, an examination of how people come together and cooperate in the face of external threat. The physical discomforts they endured were manifold: heat, insects, montonous diet, finite supplies. But the worst danger was the psychological toll that their uncertain situation COULD have exacted, had the Embassy staff's leadership faltered.

The Ambassador is modest in his self-appraisal & generous in that of his fellows (both Embassy staff and civilian); he certainly did not ask to be besieged, but when the situation was thrust upon him he accepted on-site responsibility for all. The story, as he recounts it, makes me hope that were I ever to find myself in similar straits, that my companions and my leadership would be cut from the same cloth. Besides learning what actually happened in the Embassy compound during Desert Shield (the media afforded only short glimpses & that story was soon eclipsed by Desert Storm), I was left with a new appreciation of human versatility & spirit.

My only complaint about the book is the small number of pictures; then again, they were under SIEGE, for crying out loud!

A MUST HAVE!!! for any aviary library.......2004-05-12

This is one the best books that I have in my possession. It provides anyone with excellent visual pictures of the actual birds and provides general information for each. The information is fairly good but limited to a single page for each bird, but is fairly comprehensive in regard to each species and sub-species. I highly recommend this book.

Great reference to identify common & less known pet birds.......1999-08-23

Covers history of aviculture, caging, taming, & breeding including setting up mixed species aviaries.Tells country of origin, habitat, foods, whether they will sing/talk or both. Also covers how they do in captivity with children and other pets.Very informative for the person trying to decide what pet they want or whether they want to set upbreeding colonies. Something for everyone!

My daughter would check this book out of the library on a regular basis. She loves this book and asked for it for Christmas, but I didn't think we could get it since it was out of print. I was so happy to be able to buy it used (although it looks absolutely brand new) and the photos are wonderful. She gets lots of enjoyment out of this book.

Simon & Schuster Children's Guide to Birds.......2000-06-13

My son is an avid animal lover. He finds this book to be fascinating. He has checked it out of the school library and keeps renewing it to explore new birds. The book has beautiful color pictures of loads of common and uncommon birds grouped by category (i.e. waterbirds, songbirds, seabirds, owls, etc.). This book is very well done and perfect for the elementary school child.
