what I'd like to do.......2007-04-02

I first encountered this book at a college library. The book is a overview of costuming usually seen at Sci-Fi conventions. There are some re-enactment type stuff, but very little. Every page is loaded with color prints of eye popping costumes. This is not an instruction book. It gives the picture and interviews with the creators.

Great Addition to My Fabric Painting Resource Library.......2006-03-30

I've already collected a number of painting/dyeing/surface design books for working with fabric, and this makes an excellent addition. I don't think it could stand alone as the be-all and end-all, but it is comprehensive in the sense that the author presents all kinds of ideas and inspiration, as well as photographs and instructions/resources. The one thing I might have found more helpful would be greater detail in the steps she took to achieve certain results. Although she does offer descriptions, it seems that sometimes steps and/or details of the process are missing.

This book is particularly strong on explaining the theories behind the different fabric types and why they react as they do to dyes and paints. Some of the instructions are very clear and good photos of stamps and other printing techniques. I found the finished items and cloth a bit messy - not really my style. But a good addition to the library.

Comprehensive.......2005-10-05

This book is wonderfully comprehensive of the latest methods for embellishing with dyes and inks. I would have liked to have seen other artists results with her techniques, but I find the technical information more than compensates.

I have read many "how to books" that are advertisments for their
products or books bragging about their wonderful artwork but this book tells all! It is very easy to understand and tells
exactly how to get the results wanted. What a refreshing change!

David and Peter Turnley have happened to be present at some of the most interesting moments in world history...some of the their subject matter is subtle, some obviously important. All of the events covered have far reaching repercussions upon looking back in time. (Perhaps with the exception of Peter's photos of Paris at the end of the book...those are simply lovely photos from a design perspective.) The Turnley brothers are true documentary photographers... catching people and events in motion, not setting up a pretty shot for a magazine cover. In that way, their photographs combine a raw beauty with important storytelling if you know enough about world events to "read the shot." Even if you don't, these photos will make you want to know more about what has been happening in these different parts of the world. Amazing, sometimes painful, always truthful photo collection.

...honestly, this book would be among them.

Say what some might about photojournalism, this book holds a remarkable cross-section of "news" photography - the scope of this book is truly impressive, especially for *only* two individual photographers; nevermind the fact that they're twins!

As I continue to research and untangle the trecherous and painful history of this world - and the wars that serve as it's unfortunate landmarks - I've often turned to this book for a window to many of the events that I read about. ... the photos in this book are rife with emotion expressed by the subjects of these shots.

This book may be unsatisfactory for those who require a thick dose of melodramatic action shots in order to feel like the events covered have been done justice. But for those who wish to see what these events looked like through the subtle (and many times not-too-subtle) vista of civilian life, this book will absorb your again and again.

From the South African Apartheid to The Palestinian Intifada; The First Gulf War to the one in Kosovo, this book will take you to all the places that you read about in the news, and give you a very candid look at what's really going on, and what it meant to the millions of ordinary people who are caught in the middle of it all, then subsequently overlooked when the memoirs are written.

Dull pictures of exciting events.......2003-09-09

These two photographers managed to put themselves into the middle of where history was being made, and have next to nothing to show for it. There probably were great moments of tension, passion and danger taking place while they were taking pictures, but none of them show up in the book. Most of the pictures look like news shots from a midwestern livestock show. OK, it's Bosnia. How about capturing some emotional depth, or at least something more than flat played-out scenes the NYT has already run into the ground.

Overhyped PhotoJ Churn Out Mediocre Ego Inflated Retrospec........2000-08-28

Come on. These guys are OK, but do they really deserve their own book? Yeah, they've got the twin factor going for them, but as photographers I wouldn't spend 60 bucks on this book unless my coffee table was lacking a good paperweight. You're better off spending the money on some Tri-X film and shooting yourself. Trust me, you'd learn a lot more then flipping through "In Times of War and Peace".

Incredible Book By Inspiring Photographers.......1999-06-28

This is the best photography I have ever purchased. Amazing work these two brothers have done over the years. I was touched and awed many times when I was turning the pages. I spent an hour in my favorite reading chair silently looking through this book, beginning ten minutes after it arrived at my apartment. It is an inspiration to anyone who takes photographs. This book has incredible integrity and beauty. The photos are not only glimpses into important events of the last 20 years, but they also work very well as examples of real mastery of the camera and of the power of images in our lives.

This book means a lot to me. Every photography student should have it on their shelf. It has helped refresh my faith in the importance of taking pictures.

I've learned a lot from it and I would like to express my gratitude to the Turnleys.

For parents struggling to adjust to the diagnosis of their child as autistic (or as having Asperger's syndrome or PDD), the stress is often compounded by simultaneously having to absorb vast amounts of information about their child's condition and their various options for treatment and education. Busy teachers, speech therapists and other professionals must also educate themselves rapidly about autism in order to deal with a child or adult who may have problems and gifts quite unlike those seen in any other disability.

This book (along with Bryna Siegel's excellent "The World of the Autistic Child") should help. Lorna Wing is both a renowned researcher and the mother of an autistic child. Her book combines state-of-the-art information on all aspects of the autistic continuum with a clear and readable style and a wealth of good sense.

Glad I read it.......2005-09-24

Even though the ending to this story is obvious from the outset, it was still difficult to read and no doubt was much more so for her mother to write. I didn't realize the amount of turmoil the military services were going through at the time which was to me a big contributor to the second guessing and backbiting that resulted from the crash and subsequent investigations. Ms. Spears has been accused of bias, but come on - this was her daughter and I found it to be as objective as possible given that perspective. For the reader not into aviation the book has a lot of terms that would seem pretty dry but the story can't be told without them. The death of this woman was no more tragic than those of any other American out there with the passion to defend this country. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't have liked the chance to have met Kara.

HMMMMM...........2005-08-18

I was disappointed with this book. I thought I was going to read about some "dirt"..but no..its written by her mother..so you won't. If you want to know why some of the other female officers didn't like Kara, etc....you won't find it here..because once again..mother wrote it! I got the impression she wanted to be a man and had to prove it...time and time again. If you want to read mommy telling everyone how pretty Kara is..then by all means read it! If you don't..don't bother. If you ask me (and you won't) women have no place in a fighter jet..they do not have that true killer instinct that a man has...that's why under the canopy they have what is called a "cockpit".

Kara was an inspiration..........2004-09-15

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I think it was beautifully written with enough of Kara's own journal entries and letters to friends and family that you really get a sense of who she was and how she lived.
I think that she should be remembered as an inspiration, not only to young women, but to young people everywhere, that if you really set your mind to it, you can do anything!
It's been 10 years now since this amazing woman lived her dream and I pray that, not only is she remembered, but that she is remembered for her amazing accomplishments, her brave spirit and never ending courage.
Kara Hultgreen is a true American success story and thank you Ms. Spears for introducing her to me.

Call Sign Revlon is Kara's call for justice........2004-03-27

After reading this well written book, I have little doubt several attempts were made to kill Kara. Also, I viewed a videotape of Kara's fatal approach to the carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln. As Kara turned on final, I believe I saw a remote-controlled explosive charge take out her left engine. Whoever set off the charge was, in all likelihood, a pilot, for he knew which engine to take out and at what crucial period during the approach the charge should be detonated. Earlier, Kara's fate was sealed when she spoke up about the gross misbehavior at Tail Hook and put down an Air Force general. I spoke to Sally Spears, Kara's mother and author of this book. Ms. Spears does not want to believe Kara's fellow officers would murder her daughter. Was Kara murdered? Read this excellent book and view the videotape of Kara's final approach. You may reach the same conclusion I did.

good picture of common struggles in Naval Aviation.......2002-06-06

I don't know any of the individuals in this book, but I've been in the Navy long enough to recognize all the types and to confirm the descriptions of many of the settings here. Sally Spears did a good job of researching and writing this book, and she was more objective than I'd expect a mother to be. It's easy to see Kara brought on a lot of her own problems, but I understand the reasons for her behavior. Because of our different personalities, I wonder whether I would have liked her as a fellow officer.

I have the greatest admiration for this first generation of female fighter pilots. Being a woman in the man's world of naval aviation is tough. (I know that from my experiences, described in "Navy Greenshirt: A Leader Made, Not Born.") And fighter pilots are tough on each other. To take on that double challenge and succeed in this harsh environment requires a woman with extraordinary guts and determination. Those who haven't experienced the emotional pressure can't comprehend it.

As for whether Kara got special treatment, people seem to forget the pilots who trained these "tokens" are ordinary naval aviators (and men), and I have to believe they wouldn't give false grades because of command pressure. It they did, they don't deserve to be commissioned officers. Kara did get special negative treatment. Releasing a mishap investigation to the public, as someone released hers, would normally be a court martial offense.
