The Royal Pavilion, Brighton, is one of the most famous and opulent royal extravaganzas in existence. This book reproduces all the important surviving designs, used and unused, for the exterior and interior of the Pavilion. It reveals the great variety of brilliant exotic schemes devised for its construction and decoration.It was first built in 1787 for the Prince of Wales as a neo-classical marine villa, and by the time the Prince became king in 1820 it had grown into the extraordinary Indian/Chinese Fantasy it is today.The projects for the exterior include the pretty but chaste designs of Henry Holland and the wilder Indian and Chinese fantasies of William Porden and Humphry Repton. The interior designs, executed mainly by the Crace firm of decorators and Robert Jones (all firmly controlled by the king) are always splendid and often astonishing; they include schemes for whole rooms as well as for individual details such as windows, skylights, doorways, carpets and curtains. The range includes the 'barbaric' chinoiserie of the 1802-04 period, the enchanting 'rococo' chinoiserie of 1815-17, and the opulent richness of the final scheme. The techniques used include illusionistic painting, marbling, faux graining, faux skies - often in a vein of high fantasy.The 308 illustrations, of which 111 are reproduced in colour, capture all the variety, magnificence and exotic luxury of the extraordinary building.

This is a great collection of photographs of opera stars from a fine scholar and dealer of historic opera and music related photographs, letters, autographed items and other interesting documents. What do these things have to do with music? Well, they certainly provide an added psychological connection with the past and the artists and a human dimension to the understanding of their artistry. This book is a great addition to every music lover's library.

This is a book that I have not only read,but contrbuted to.My essay E.C.Segar-A Life is one of the introductory pieces,covering the entire life of Popeye's creator.The essay Popeye The Leading Man is a very fair summary of the animated popeye series-all 4 of them.The final Segar sunday pages are classic,with Popeye,Olive Oyl,Swee'pea,Wimpy,Geezil,Rough-House,Eugene the jeep and Poopdeck Pappy.This is a must for the true Popeye lover.

Should be more widely available and used more often.......2005-10-10

Unlike most thin "cases" books, this one delivers. For those using it in a finengineering class, it is best to try to decompose and model each product in small work groups to get the best replication of what an actual work-team is like.

This work, however, is showing its age, but that is its largest flaw.

This work, coupled with Joshi, Neftci, or Cutherbertson and Nitzche's "Quantitative Financial Economics" (good for time series analysis emphasis) should be the standard and preferred texts for structured products/financial engineering course(s).

There is no need to be suspicious of the common function in academic publishing that the "big name" (Merton) maps to "poor quality." For this is an essential book.

Again, age is the flaw, for the "cases" selected here will be on the simplistic tail of the median structured product distribution offered today. However, such fundamental cases are excellent exercises to prepare for constructiong more complex, multi-dimensional products.

In addition, the book is both accessible to "poets" (i.e. non-technical quants) and stimulating (it won't bore you to tears) for those gifted in math and physics and have intuitive understandings of programming and modeling.

This is easily one of the top five books in quant fin (not that this is a very strong field of 'excellent' works, but you take what you can get).

A kick-butt pragmatic review - USEFUL!.......1997-01-21

This is a great book for someone who is hoping to steal financial engineering practices from one industry to apply them in another. I loved this book- we've already ordered two more copies for people in my work group. Experienced or neophyte, if you're into risk management and/or developing new financial instruments get this one

I love this journal. It is a shame that it is out of print. Each week has a few pages to write with a few quotes about a topic. But you are not directed, you don't answer questions, and you don't fill in blanks.
What is so lovely is that the book moves you to write. It helps you find the comfort to be bold and write your thoughts.

Wake Island Pilot is the story of John F. Kinney - hero, POW escapee, and aviation pioneer. It contains the first full-length account of a successful escape by a Marine captured in one of the great battles of World War II. Within hours of the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese struck the small U.S. garrison on Wake Island. As his squadron's engineering officer, young pilot John F. Kinney used all his considerable ingenuity to oversee the cannibalization of crippled planes for spare parts when he himself was not in the air fighting off the Japanese assault. His gallant efforts helped enable the desperate Marine and Navy defenders to hold out for an incredible two weeks, a truly epic struggle. After the island's inevitable surrender, Kinney was a Japanese prisoner in China for the next three and a half years. During this time, he put his amazingly inventive mechanical skills to work, creating from scratch numerous items, including a radio, to improve his fellow POWs' situation. Toward the end of the war, Kinney escaped from a prison train and, with the assistance of both Nationalist and Communist Chinese troops, made his way to an American airfield. He was thus one of the few Americans to escape from Japanese captivity outside the Philippines. General Kinney's subsequent Marine Corps career was equally distinguished: He flew fighters in the Korean War and helped develop the classic A4-D Skyhawk.

A heroe's story, and an excellent researcher's resource too!.......2006-10-14

In any story one reads about Wake Island, Lt. Kinney is always mentioned as a key player. It is interesting to piece the Wake saga together with the individual stories and anecdotes of the men like Kinney who were there.
The story Kinney tells is a humble one, considering the events he has seen and endured. He is the original "MacGuyver," fixing equipment not only at Wake, but also throughout his career.
Kinney's story is like walking through nearly every chapter of military aviation history. Few can ever say they flew in everything from Curtiss Jennys to early Vietnam era jets.
A great read for Wake Island, WWII, aviation and Korean War enthusiasts alike.

Excellent! Against all odds he survived, mind over matter!.......1999-03-12

The first two chapters were a warm up for the real guts and glory! I have never met the author but just reading his book made me proud to be an American. Using the genious approach to cannibalizing parts to fly planes that had no chance of surviving against such great odds is overwhelming.

My advise is to buy the book and read, start to finish!
