Numerous motives converge in Hacker's architecture: a balanced relationship between the natural environmentals, and the sense of construction as a public service.
Book Description
How reliable are all those stories about the number of Eskimo words for snow? How can lamps, flags, and parrots be libelous? How might Star Trek's Commander Spock react to Noam Chomsky's theories of language? These and many other odd questions are typical topics in this collection of essays that present an occasionally zany, often wry, but always fascinating look at language and the people who study it.
Geoffrey K. Pullum's writings began as columns in Natural Language and Linguistic Theory in 1983. For six years, in almost every issue, under the banner "TOPIC. . .COMMENT," he published a captivating mélange of commentary, criticism, satire, whimsy, and fiction. Those columns are reproduced here—almost exactly as his friends and colleagues originally warned him not to publish them—along with new material including a foreword by James D. McCawley, a prologue, and a new introduction to each of these clever pieces. Whether making a sneak attack on some sacred cow, delivering a tongue-in-cheek protest against current standards, or supplying a caustic review of some recent development, Pullum remains in touch with serious concerns about language and society. At the same time, he reminds the reader not to take linguistics too seriously all of the time.
Pullum will take you on an excursion into the wild and untamed fringes of linguistics. Among the unusual encounters in store are a conversation between Star Trek's Commander Spock and three real earth linguists, the strange tale of the author's imprisonment for embezzling funds from the Campaign for Typographical Freedom, a harrowing account of a day in the research life of four unhappy grammarians, and the true story of how a monograph on syntax was suppressed because the examples were judged to be libelous. You will also find a volley of humorous broadsides aimed at dishonest attributional practices, meddlesome copy editors, mathematical incompetence, and "cracker-barrel philosophy of science." These learned and witty pieces will delight anyone who is fascinated by the quirks of language and linguists.
Customer Reviews:
Funny and devastating look into the culture of linguistics.......2003-09-26
You do not need to be a linguist to enjoy this funny, barbed, and acerbic look at the practice and culture of linquistics. If you are interested in studying linguistics, this is not a bad place to start. If you are a linguist, you will alternately wince and cheer at Pullum's observations.
And if you want to know whether one of the Eskimo languages has more words for snow than, say, English, here's the definitive and surprising answer.
one of the funniest 'academic' books i've read.......2001-05-28
I had this professor for my introduction to UNIX course at UC Santa Cruz. After the class, I noticed this book in the bookstore, and immediately purchased a copy.
I loved the Chomsky vs. the Vulcan thing :)
The linguistic concepts were a bit beyond me, but i loved the article about how linguistic journals correct (incorrectly) the grammar *of linguists*. And the English First article really shows the idiocity and lack of lingustic understanding among the general public. I'm starting to wonder if every academic discipline is misunderstood by the faceless "general public" ... and if so how I can reconcile this with my professed belief in the "inherent worth and dignity of every person."
Anyways, other interested pieces included a fictious piece where each division on campus is vying for the linguistics department to be moved under their jurisdiction, the eskimo vocabulary hoax piece of course, and just the overall tone and stuff. I highly recommend this if you like linguistics, or even if you don't like linguistics but like academic books with a sense of humor ;)
Amusing essays on language.......2000-05-30
The author wrote a column for _Natural Language and Linguistic Theory_ for six years; this book collects them, with new prefaces to each essay. The tone is light, often frivolous, sometimes bitchy, occasionally educational, and always entertaining. The title essay demolishes the idea that Eskimos have many words for snow (there are two), and traces the myth's origin. Others contain a dialogue between Noam Chomsky (the linguist) and Spock (the Vulcan); a discussion of perverse punctuation (which many newsgroup writers would do well to read); a searing but hilarious attack on the English First people ("Here Come the Linguistic Fascists"); and "Some Lists of Things About Books" (my favorite: "Four Extraordinarily Ignorant Claims About Language in Books by Linguists"; all four come from the same book). Some of the humor is too linguistics-insider to be easily deciphered, but for the most part this is a highly amusing bunch of little articles from somebody who clearly loves language, and is fortunately willing to share his love with us.

Book Description
The clear market leader in the corporate finance course, this text filled a very definite need for a MODERN corporate finance text back in 1983 when the first edition was published. It is known for its intuitive, conversational style and for being able to tie together many of the important ideas in corporate finance. The author's discussions and illustrations are unique due to the depth of detail blended with a distinct sense of humor. This new edition will continue to be authoritative and student friendly but will also carry stronger, modern coverage reflected by current examples and data as well as unique emphasis upon agency issues.
Customer Reviews:
blah blah blah..........2007-03-13
good basic financial principles... not much for interest, but does do a descent job of conveying and illustrating basic financial principles.
A solid introduction to corporate finance.......2003-05-23
This Brealey and Myers's textbook, now in its 7th edition, introduces the student to the fascinating world of corporate finance. The first few chapters of the book demystify Net Present Value, the preferred method for calculating the value of an investment project. Brealey and Myers then explain how risk and return are related and introduce the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The CAPM's strengths and weaknesses are both explored in detail. The authors continue by analyzing the significance of dividend policy and debt policy for a corporation -- including the rather surprising result that in perfect markets these just don't matter! The next topic is options, financial and real; major pricing models are covered, and warrants and convertibles get a fair treatment, too. The remaining parts of the book deal with a variety of topics such as valuing debt, managing financial risks, financial planning as well as mergers and corporate governance.
At 1071 pages, Principles of Corporate Finance can hardly be called a short book. Introductory textbooks often suffer from a "too-much-too-little" syndrome, in that numerous topics are covered, but none too well. Brealey and Myers easily avoid this pitfall. Their writing is solid and manages to keep the reader's interest. Although available space puts a limit on what can be said, the book's coverage is quite comprehensive and well linked to the results of modern research. Moreover, all topics receive their fair share of treatment so you can actually understand the theories the book presents. It should be noted here that some mathematical background is probably necessary to make the book easy reading.
Each chapter contains many problems which can be used to facilitate the learning process. I found them very useful. The only complaint I have about the book (International Edition) is that the binding proved less than perfect, as after a while pages started separating from the main body of the work. But that is a problem I can live with.
All in all, an interesting, readable, authoritative introduction to corporate finance.
CORPORATE FINANCE BIBLE ON WALL STREET.......2003-03-20
I have used this book three times now: as an undergraduate in financial economics, at the training program at an investment bank, and at the core finance course at my MBA. It is a very good resource and learning tool, going from the very basic ideas of discounting all the way to options pricing and more innovative finance.
This is the preferred learning tools of all finance professors I have met and the reference used by all finance professionals I met. It is very simple to follow the concepts of the book, especially if you purchase the study guide that is available with it.
The only major concern I have heard is that it does not deal with the more recent finance problems of off-balance sheet financing and other shenanigans. This is a book meant to teach basic financial theory, so those topics, in my opinion, are better treated elsewhere.
Book ..........2003-01-03
This books [is bad] primarily because it is called "Principles of Corporate Finance". This is NOT AN INTRO book to finance. An intro book would have spent more time going over basic concepts like balance sheets and income statement. Also the sample problems at times can be really hard to follow. I highly recommend using Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan as a supplement to this if you have no finance background.
Inappropriate for intro MBA finance but professors love it.......2002-08-30
The wide range of reactions to this textbook simply indicates the fact that it is NOT actually a good introductory text for the typically diverse MBA student mix found in any intro-level course. Yet that is PRECISELY the usage for which it is known: intro-level corporate finance classes in MBA programs. My MBA program also used B&M, but a group of us simultaneously volunteered for a focus group run by the publisher of Aswath Damodaran's excellent Corporate Finance textbook. We followed the Damodaran text alongside our B&M text for the entire semester. At semester's end EVERY SINGLE MBA IN THE FOCUS GROUP preferred Damodaran's text -- and the group contained electrical engineers with graduate degrees and former I-bank analysts as well as former ballet dancers and journalists. Damodaran is an award-winning finance professor at NYU. B&M is heavy on the academic scholarship, far removed from the real hurley-burley of Wall Street, and despite the humour (which I did enjoy) it cannot successfully meet the needs of a broad range of students. Yet it continues to be used for just that purpose -- indeed, my MBA alma mater ignored the student feedback and continues to use B&M, the professors' darling... If you are suffering with this text, do yourself a favour and get Damodaran's, which is a text designed to TEACH by a professor who truly cares that ALL his students master corporate finance.

Book Description
What is market orientation in the food sector, and how can food companies become more market-oriented? This book investigates these questions through an empirical study of selected Danish food companies and their activities in three important export markets: France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
The book is divided into three sections. The first explores the concept of market orientation and how it relates to developing competitive advantage. The second discusses in detail how market knowledge can be gained, and the final section focuses on how this knowledge, once generated, can be put to use in a food company during process and product development.

Book Description
What's in Your Future?
Do you have a dream? Do you have a plan for reaching your goals? Do you think of the future in terms of what you will have instead of the kind of person you will be? Are you building relationships with your peers and with adults that will help you reach your goals? Or are you getting sidetracked by things that seem pleasurable and fun right now (goofing off in school, drinking, doing drugs, having sex) but that may hurt your chances of succeeding in the future?
As a teen, it's time to start thinking about your life's goals and what you need to do to reach them. Let's face it - very, very few of you will have the talent or luck to make it to the NBA, record a hit album, or win the big prize on a reality TV show. But there are many other paths you can follow that are worthwhile and satisfying.
So, what's the best way to get what you want in life?
Let's Get Real!
Farrell Artis grew up like many of you are, in a poor neighborhood with danger lurking on street corners and playgrounds. He saw childhood friends hurt by violence and drugs. Although it took a lot of effort, he decided that getting an education, working to help children, and raising his own family would be his path to success.
Now, he wants to help you learn what it takes to succeed and get what you want in life. You can find your own message of hope as you read his story and words of advice in this book. He's been where you are and done it. You can too!

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

An interesting review of lesser known figures in American History.......2006-12-14
This book provides an interesting look at some of the lesser known actors in American history. From the farmwives to Hancock you get an interesting view of life during this time period. Overall the best review was on Indian figures such as Sacagawea. For those looking for a good survey textbook of this time period I would recommend this one.

Great stories, wonderful research -- with a caveat........2000-04-04
In "Alas! What Brought Thee Hither?" Arthur Bonner has done a magnificent job researching virtually every printed word about New York's Chinatown from the 1840's until just after World War II, often quoting long-unheard Chinese voices in the process. His well-organized text is crammed full of fascinating vignettes, detailing the development of that intriguing neighborhood, and the crushingly-hard path that the first couple of Chinese-American generations followed to make a life in this country. Every paragraph reveals some meaty tidbit, with a plethora of period illustrations to round them out. It is not a book that one would normally read cover to cover, but dip into here and there -- a buffet, rather than a banquet. Unfortunately, Mr. Bonner doesn't go any deeper than these journalistic accounts, leaving the tale somewhat bloodless. Women, especially, are given short shrift in Mr. Bonner's tale. Take as an example his claim that the lavishly-dressed ladies lining the walls of grand banquets of 100 years ago were merely prostitutes or concubines waiting for their patrons. Not so, Mr. Bonner. As the great-grandson of one of those women, I can safely say they were simply the wives of the male diners, as the womenfolk were always separated from the men in such public social situations. He also says that the infamous tunnels supposedly used as escape routes for Tong warriors were inventions of the taboid press of the day. Not only were these tunnels real, anyone can visit them today, as they have been turned into a shopping arcade to relieve the overcrowding at street level. Although there are other such missteps, "Alas..." is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in the history of New York City's Chinatown.
