      Book Description

      This is a major McFarland reference work providing in-depth analyses of all puppet animation sequences in every film that has featured the process, including King Kong and Jason and the Argonauts. The focus is on how effective the sequence was and how it was executed. In addition to the analysis, each entry provides title, year of release, cast and production credits including producer, director, screenplay, director of photography, art director or production designer, music, stop-motion animators, armature builders, puppet makers, stop-motion cameramen, sequence supervisors, and more. Ratings of the film and of the effectiveness of its stop-motion sequences are also given.

      4 out of 5 stars The ultimate sourcebook....almost.......1999-11-19

      This HUGE (almost 850 pages) tome is the ultimate reference guide to the motion pictures that utilize the fine art of stop-motion photography. From the obvious (King Kong, Jason and The Argonauts) to the obscure (Winterbeast, Frostbiter), this covers them all. Almost. I did notice a few omissions, most notably the Lou Ferrigno HERCULES movies from the early 80's, both of which I believe employed this process. Also missing was Godzilla Vs. Destroyah, which used the process briefly, and Godzilla Vs. Biollante, which had test footage in this process (the book covers other films that stop-motion was only used as test footage for). It also misses a couple of movies that utilized footage from Planet of Dinosaurs (Galaxy of Dinosaurs and Time Tracers). But other than these minor gripes, the book is fascinating, full of great pictures of all the monsters you forgot about (remember the stop-motion creatures from Coneheads? Howard the Duck? Didn't think so. But you SHOULD.). A great buy at it's high price tag, and well worth every penny.

            Book Description

            The First is a race of godlike beings that believe they formed themselves in a passion of creation. Their past lost in a fog of myth, their present is a comfortable routine - until a new power emerges that could topple their preeminence. Faced with its first true threat, their society begins to fall apart, and soon the mystery of the Sigil-Bearers threatens to plunge The First into civil war. The First is a story of beautiful, powerful beings with feet of clay. Larger than life, they're portrayed with an over-the-top vigor and vitality. Like The Real World set on Mount Olympus, THE FIRST boils over with intrigues great and small and with the fate of the universe hanging in the balance.

                    Book Description

                    Multinational Corporations and the Impact of Public Advocacy on Corporate Strategy: Nestlé and the Infant Formula Controversy presents an in-depth analysis of the infant formula controversy and the resulting international boycott of Nestlé products launched by various social activist groups and church organizations. The actions of those groups culminated in the passage of the first international marketing code under the auspices of the World Health Organization.
                    Based on exhaustive and unique research, the book details the Nestlé case and uses it to analyze a number of other major issues bearing on contemporary business strategy and operations in the national and international arena. Issues addressed include:
                  • The rising phenomenon of social activism and its affect on public opinion and public policy;
                  • The changing role of churches and other religious groups and their impact on corporate strategy and behavior;
                  • The emergence of UN affiliated international bodies, as both arbiters and regulators of market conduct of multinational corporations;
                  • The changing dynamics between multinational corporations and host countries;
                  • The factors which determine a company's behavior and its ability to adapt to changing societal expectations. £/LIST£ Multinational Corporations and the Impact of Public Advocacy on Corporate Strategy: Nestlé and the Infant Formula Controversy presents a microcosm of business society conflicts being played out in all parts of the world. This scholarly book will be of great interest to academics in the areas of management, business ethics, social conflict, and international regulation. It will also appeal to a broad corporate and government audience and to anyone interested in contemporary world affairs and the increasing globalization of socio-economic conflicts.

                        3 out of 5 stars Not enough common names.......2006-07-16

                        My daughter was discouraged in trying to select a common name. This book seems to focus on more of the unusual and foreign names.

                        5 out of 5 stars It's in here! You are sure to find a name you like!.......2005-08-25

                        This book is well organized, devided into boy and girl names, alphabetical and easy to read. The descriptions include alternate/similar names and basic meanings.
                        I have to say, my husband I could not (ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT) agree on a name for our children. It took us 9 months of working at it to find a name we agreed on. Thank goodness for this book. There were names in here I had not even thought of, nor would I have ever heard of them. Thank Goodness for this book.

                        2 out of 5 stars Lacking...........2005-06-07

                        I was surprised how much this book was lacking. It didn't even contain names that I considered to relatively common. Also, it only lists a name under its most popular spelling (under that lising it will give alternative spellings but still...) I ended up buying a different baby name book. This one just didn't cut it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Love the checklist in the back.......2003-06-17

                        We got this book to, of course, choose a name for our son. There are tons of suggestions & meanings. I liked the small (paperback book size) size of the book...was easy to throw in my purse & take with me to kill some time at the mechanic shop when my car was getting fixed.

                        In the back, there are two separate pages (one for Mom & one for Dad) to make a list of their favorite boy/girl names. Then you can compare your lists without the other seeing your list first. I liked that idea.

                        And you can't beat the price!

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2002-08-03

                        This book had so many names that we liked - we had a hard time especially since we had to pick out two names! I would highly recommend this one!

                        Book Description

                        Author Larry Chambers vividly describes the guts and courage it took to pass the though volunteer-only training program in Nha Tarng to be part of the 5th Special Forces Recondo School, the hair-raising graduation mission to scout out, locate, and out-guerilla the NVA. Here is an unforgettable account that follows Chambers and the Rangers every step of the way--from joining, going through Recondo, and finally leading his own team on white-knuckle missions through the jungle hell of Vietnam.

                        This is an exelent book, it covers the author time while serving in F coy/ 58 LRP and L coy/ 75 Ranger

                        One of the things I love is the way the author decribes the small details, the nitty gritty...attention to details are importend, but it is details in the field...

                        This book also gives an avid account of the authors trip to the famed MACV recondo school and has plenty of goddy tips that can be used even today by modern patrol soldiers.

                        The author is a modest man, but you cannot miss that fact that Larry Chambers was icecold in combat.....did things that many others would have freaked out on......

                        This book gave a good accounting of the training to become a Long Range Reconaisance Patrol leader, and what it was really like to be almost alone, behind the enemy lines.

                        another excellent book by Larry Chambers. This details his attendance at the coveted Recondo School in Vietnam, detailing the processes and the experiences. Very well written and I cannot recommend it enough for anyone looking into the LRRPs of Vietnam

                        "I made this book mandatory reading for my Ranger team. I'd quiz my men about what they'd learned; to be bold, daring, tenacious, audacious, and don't be afraid to make a decision. We went from the worst platoon in the regiment to the best platoon in six months. In training we'd get to objective so fast they had to hold us back.

                        Having been in the army, served in a war myself, and now turned helicopter pilot, I can truly recommend his book to everybody. Especially readers who are thinking of joining, people who have served and wifes who are trying to understand. Larry Chambers tells it how it is. It's the "real experience" without the politics and the [] Hollywood drama. I personally enjoyed most how the book showes that in the real world, all that was learned in basic and from the handbook, needs to be "slightly modified" to survive a real battle and keep working. You guys are true heroes to me and I thank you, Larry, for a wonderful book I couldn't put down until I was done at around 3am next morning.

                                  I first read this book many years ago, i was very interested in Vietnam and especially in the SF soldiers who fought deep in the heart of Vietnam's jungles. Larry Chambers gives a thoughtful account of his time spent with the 101st Airborne's Long Range Ranger Patrol groups (LRRPs). The book is well written, some may find it sophomoric or "low brow" in spots but the book wasn't written to be an academic masterpiece, it is what it is. Compelling and fun along with great details of how and why teh LRRPs did their jobs, and did them well, i love this book after multiple readings.

                                        Book Description

                                        A collection of essays summarizing current knowledge of southeastern Native Americans during the colonial encounter (post 1500). Integrates archaeological, documentary, and ethno-historical evidence in the most comprehensive examination of diverse southe astern Indian cultures published in decades. The Timucua, Guale, Apalachee, Chickasaw, Caddo, Natchez, Quapaw, Cherokee, Upper and Lower Creek, and Seminole tribes are each considered.

                                        Customer Reviews:

                                        4 out of 5 stars Proto-historical Indian Tribes.......2004-05-19

                                        This is a collection of essays by archaelogists about the Indian societies that inhabited the southeastern United States from about 1500 to 1700. One chapter each is devoted to the Timucua, Guale, Apalachee, Chickasaws, Caddos, Natchez, Quapaw, Cherokee, Upper Creeks, Lower Creeks, and Seminole.

                                        Much of the writing is opaque professorial prose, but the editor reins in the contributors and they generally stay focused on the subject (Indians) rather than embarking on flights of fancy on pet subjects such as "productive intensification" or "diachronic perspective." If you are interested in what the Indians of the southeastern U.S. were like just before or just after their first contacts with Europeans then this is a good book to read.

                                        The most enigmatic paragraph in the book is titled "Editor's Note." In it the editor blandly explains that the most contentious topic in her editing was the use of tribal names in singular or plural form, pointing out that the correct practice "is to use the ethnological singular to indicate plural members of native tribes." She apologizes for any offense that may be given native peoples by departures from this rule. Is this a ponderous joke dressed up in academically correct language? I think it is -- and I applaud the editor's humour, if such is intended. In any case, the Timucua will forgive her as they have been extinct for 300 years.

                                            Book Description

                                            Iran is a country rich in wildlife and, under the Shah, was one of the first in the world to develop a conservation program. A natural crossroads over which migrations of men and animals have flowed since the beginning of time, the country has two completely different climatic zones enabling an extraordinary variety of species to flourish. Surprisingly, however, the details are poorly documented in the West. This book is the first to explore the major species of mammals and birds, both as they are now and as they have evolved through time. It will serve as an invaluable guide for wildlife enthusiasts and travelers.
