The book never showed up. I needed to order it 2nd time and cancel 1st order. It took me almost a month before I got it.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book for starters!!! Great job....Gallagher.......2001-08-30

This is an excellent book for those who want to delve into finance. It is equivalent to 2nd year material. Finance, most often offered in 3rd year here in Canada, requires knowledge of statistics (i.e. stats, econometrics...etc Intermediate level; 2nd year) when reviewing certain budgeting options; you won't need this for the book. Don't be dismaid, your not missing key information by using this 2nd year stuff (you get all of the math too at an easier to comprehend level).
The disk included with mine helps to build your financial knowledge through a website connection and with practice, but this is not mandatory and is designed for the hardcore finance junkies like myself.
It is only a 4-star because I want more challenging material, but being a 2nd year course I have to wait until 3rd year.

In the years after World War I, Southern farm women found their world changing. A postwar plunge in farm prices stretched into a twenty-year agricultural depression and New Deal programs eventually transformed the economy. Many families left their land to make way for larger commercial farms. New industries and the intervention of big government in once insular communities marked a turning point in the struggle of upcountry women -- forcing new choices and the redefinition of traditional ways of life.

Melissa Walker's All We Knew Was to Farm draws on interviews, archives, and family and government records to reconstruct the conflict between rural women and bewildering and unsettling change. Some women adapted by becoming partners in farm operations, adopting the roles of consumers and homemakers, taking off-farm jobs, or leaving the land. The material lives of rural upcountry women improved dramatically by midcentury -- yet in becoming middle class, Walker concludes, the women found their experiences both broadened and circumscribed.

There are three unavoidable truths about Wagner: that he was one of the most repellent men who ever lived; that he was one of the greatest geniuses that ever lived; and that people either love him or hate him.

Michael White's highly entertaining introduction to this horrifying figure concentrates mostly on the first 'fact' - it is, after all, easier to list someone's biographical failures than explain why the closing symphony of the Gotterdammerung sounds both like the terrible end of the world and the unaccountable essence of sublimity (I'm afraid he gets you talking this way).

And so, amusingly, we are told about Wagner's cruelties, caprices, infidelities, and, of course, his anti-Semitism; and given an interesting guide to some of the more sensible influences (eg Schopenhauer, Proudhon) on Wagner's loony philosophies, and a sound cultural and political background.

This proper emphasis on the man rather neglects the artist, and while White quite rightly argues the impossibility of separating both, you don't get much sense of the sheer magnitude of Wagner's achievement (using the odd big word isn't enough), or what it means for us, the listener, to be entranced by the works of such an ogre.

That said, the sheer readability and cheek of this book, as with all others in this series, is great fun, even if it doesn't achieve its aim (to make you master of the subject) as the book on Post-Modernism did.

The chief joy of this series, however, is the illustration, and Kevin Scott keeps up the remarkably high standard, fusing dada, colage, pop art, with some astonishing pastiche and cartoon work, which means every page, even if you are dissatisfied with its contents, is a pleasure to read.

                                                Book Description

The legendary U-Boat ace Otto Kretschmer was branded 'the wolf of the Atlantic', and for good reason. In his dramatic wartime career he sank ship after ship, sowing terror among Allied convoys and dismay in those charged with their protection. Kretschmer was a daring officer who favored bringing his U-Boat into the heart of the convoy and destroying it from within. He earned himself a tremendous reputation before his capture in March 1941, and The Golden Horseshoe makes it clear why. Terence Robertson's biography of the U-Boat ace draws upon first-hand experience of conditions and the deadly game as the hunter sought to outfox the hunted. He paints a masterly portrait of life at sea and weaves in the fascinating story of Kretschmer and the exploits of his U-Boats. Kretschmer was eventually captured and interviewed by Captain McIntyre of HMS Walker, an episode which is also recounted in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A fine biography of an extremely capable U-Boat skipper.......2007-05-23

This is a fine book about Otto Kretschmer, focusing on his wartime carreer and exploits. There is scant information on his shildhood and early years, but the author paints a magnificent portrait of this highly capable skipper from the moment he took command of his first U-Boat, U-23. Of course the most terrific action happened in the period June 1940 - March 1941, when Kretschmer eas commanding the famous U-99 and Robertson gives many details regarding U-Boat and antisubmarine tactics of the era, as well as the every day life of a typical U-Boat crew. U-99 had also guests onboard in some of her cruises and the anecdotes about them are good enough. Kretschmer was a fine marksman spending most of the times just a single torpedo for every ship he sent to the bottom and he was the first U-Boat skipper to attack convoys on the surface and duting the night hours-a practice that brought to him great success and the Oak Leaves and Swords to the Knight's Cross. Luck run out for Kretschmer in March 1941 when he sunk many ships during a convoy battle in North Atlantic but he was also depth charged and forced to surface by the Royal Navy destroyer "HMS Walker". There are also interesting episodes from his years in captivity as well as his late release in 1947. The only shortcoming of the book (which has the fine writing style of so many old books) was the fact that it was written in 1955, just before Kretschmer started a new carreer in the Budesmarine and so it dosen't contain any information about the next decades. Otto Kretschmer died in 1997, when he slipped on a staircase and fell, during a trip to Danube for his wedding anniversary.

Having read several other biographies of other U-boat aces, I was somewhat disappointed in the relative lack of anecdotes and the necessarily detached viewpoint of the book. (being written in the third-person) Overall, however, the book is well written and provides a very good whole-view of Kretchmer and his career, both pre-war and through the course of his somewhat brief war and much longer time in captivity. A good starting point to learn about the man, and some interesting insight into the Battle of the Atlantic, very much from a British perspective, but with quite apparent admiration for a worthy and gentlemanly adversary.

                                                      Book Description

At the turn of the twentieth century every field in the world of arts and ideas experienced a revolution which turned that field upside down. This book, written and edited by eight scholars from different disciplines, consists of a wide-ranging primary source anthology and a new interpretation of the intellectual and artistic revolutions around the turn-of-the-century period. The primary source material is placed into three overlapping sets: WORLD explores the conception of a newly emerging, heterogeneous, urban world; SELF concerns the perception of a new type of self which was independent, non-rational, and natural; FORM examines the subordination of traditional subject matter to a concern for innovative form and structure. Each of these categories is introduced by several pages of analysis, and each selection is separately introduced.

"Whether you watch birds on the shores of Long Island, at the Bashakill Marsh, at Niagara Falls, or just at your backyard feeder, this volume will help you appreciate what our Empire State has to offer. It will give you a historical perspective, and it will tell you what we can hope to look forward to in the future if we are vigilant stewards of our natural world."--Governor George E. Pataki

The "bible" of the state's birders since its publication in 1974, John Bull's Birds of New York State has now been completely revised and updated by the Federation of New York State Bird Clubs. This eagerly awaited survey of bird life in the state today provides new and thorough accounts of all 451 species on the official New York State checklist. The book features 7 new maps--4 in full color--and 30 striking sketches by bird artist Dale Dyer.

Birders will find chapters covering topics from the prehistoric birds of the region to contemporary bird habitats and the ways in which current classification is being affected by DNA data and research. The species accounts themselves pay particular attention to date parameters and frequency of occurrence, details that are important to the active birder. Where applicable, full subspecies discussions are included.

Meticulously prepared by the editor, Emanuel Levine, and the more than 70 members of the Federation who served as authors, this book will prove invaluable to birdwatchers statewide--whether backyard feeder watchers, casual birders, or dyed-in-the-wool enthusiasts.

A major contribution to regional ornithology is now available.

"Bull's Birds of New York State," edited by Emanuel Levine of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and with a Foreword by Governor George Pataki, has just been published. A copy belongs in the library of every bird watcher in this state, from the beginning feeder-observer to the academic ornithologist. (Wives, husbands and friends of birders take note.)

This is our fifth state bird book. The first, by J. E. DeKay, "Zoology of New York: Part 2, Birds" was published in 1844. Next came E. H. Eaton's two volume, "Birds of New York State" in 1910 and 1914. John Bull wrote "Birds of New York State" in 1974. The final predecessor is the more specialized "Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State," edited by Robert Andrle and J. R. Carroll and published in 1988.

Unlike all but the "Atlas," the new book was written by a formidable team of 77 authors. Seven of them prepared introductory essays about this state's environmental and ornithological history and about the Federation of New York State Bird Clubs under whose aegis the book was developed. These are followed by one to two-page accounts detailing range, status, breeding and nonbreeding information and remarks (but not identification characteristics) about the 451 bird species recorded through early 1997 in this state.

What I find remarkable is the uniformly high quality of each of these brief accounts. They constitute not only a compendium of information but also a collection of interesting insights.

How was this possible with so many writers spread across the state? Obviously through the discipline that was provided by Levine and his associates, Berna and Stanley Lincoln, both Lincolns past Federation presidents.

An underlying theme that arises from many of these accounts is the change in bird populations due to clearing of the countryside for farmland during the 18th and 19th centuries followed in this century by the return of much of that land to forest. The recent good news for woodland birds like pileated woodpecker is equally bad news for grassland birds like vesper and Henslow's sparrows.

It is difficult to choose from among these fine essays but my favorites are Don Windsor's pieces about those lowly urban birds: rock dove, starling and house (a.k.a. English) sparrow. My vote for best remark is Steve Eaton's about how our premier game bird got its name. "The Spanish first introduced the turkey from America into Europe in the early 1500s. From Spain it spread rapidly as a domestic fowl throughout Europe, but knowledge of its place of origin did not. In the Middle Ages nearly everything exotic was obtained in or through Turkish, or Arabian, territories. Even our corn is still known in the Near East as Turkey wheat. There is little doubt that our bird derived its name from the country Turkey."

The number of species recorded in New York has increased over the years but new birds continue to appear. Number 452 - the lovely lazuli bunting that was seen by many local birders at the farm of Don and Virginia Tiede south of Batavia last winter - is the first of those that must wait to appear in the next volume of the series.
