Confessions of a Venture Capitalist: Inside the High-Stakes World of Start-up Financing

Many people would love to pick the brains of a venture capitalist to uncover exactly what gets their juices (and checks) flowing. Some books promise such advice from the recipient's point of view, but rarely is the story told from a financier's. As its title promises, however, Confessions of a Venture Capitalist does just that. Ruthann Quindlen, a one-time investment banker now with Silicon Valley's Institutional Venture Partners, lays it on the line in this revealing glimpse inside her world. Short, humorous chapters make it an easy read--a fact that might lead some to suspect that specifics are lacking. But details are there, as evidenced in a section called "Less Is More, or Subtraction by Addition." "Rather than coming to us with just themselves and their bright idea, they believe we want to see business types as part of the initial management team," she writes. "Often, we like the technology entrepreneur and the plan, but end up in the awkward position of not being able to back the business types.... Focus instead on your idea and why customers will love it and how you and only you can make it happen." Such suggestions should prove useful to entrepreneurs, and anyone else interested in today's venture-capital economy. --Howard RothmanBook Description

Not Quite Appropriate for the Post-Bubble Age.......2005-01-15
Read the chapter titles and Skip.........2004-02-23
The book is funny to read after the Internet-bubble has burst. Ruthann is busy trying to say how venture capitalists are most valuable for a company's success, and how the Internet is going to transform everything and how the "new economy" companies need to be valued, etc.
You are allowed to spend only half an hour on this book. :-)
Stay Away From This Book..........2003-08-01
You can read this book in 30 minutes and you end up learning nothing. Neither from the perspective of the VC (investor) or from the perspective of an entrepreneur. There is one hilarious chapter in the book where the author has to enquire about one of her portfolio companies progress. the only intelligent question she could come up with is "is there any momemtum is sales?" thats all. nothing more, so you dont get to understand what VC look in entrepreneurs, you dont get to understnad how VCs add value to startups, you dont get to understand how companies are valued, you dont get to understand how VC do their exits, basically, you just dont get to understand anything that the books claims to impart you. Nothing, dont spend a cent on this book.

YANKEE GO HOME - but please take me with you!: The immigrant's guide to survival among the natives of North America
M.E. Grant Manufacturer: AuthorHouse ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1418428744 |
Book Description
M. E. GRANT is a pseudonym for Gard E. Norberg, and refers to his emigrant status. A Swede by birth, and a dedicated environmentalist, he has been a regular contributor to the British monthly, The Ecologist, and one of his essays written for that magazine was recently included in Visions Across the Americas, a collection of essays by mostly American writers - including such well-known authors as Gore Vidal, Isaac Asimov, Garrison Keillor, Maya Angelou, Ray Bradbury, Alice Walker, and Martin Luther King Jr. There is a saying in Swedish that, loosely translated, means "You chastise the one you love", and 'YANKEE GO HOME - But Please Take Me With You' is an hilariously funny critique of some of the more egregious manifestations of 'the American way of life'. But, as the title indicates, most foreigners critical of the United States would give almost anything for the privilege of living here. The 83-year old author owns some property in Costa Rica, but he and his American-born wife spend most of their time in a condo in Dania Beach, the Florida town that was founded by Danish immigrants, and which this year celebrates its centennial as the oldest city in Broward County.

Book Description
In the aftermath of the 1910 Mexican Revolution, Mexican and U.S. political leaders, business executives, and ordinary citizens shaped modern Mexico by making industrial capitalism the key to upward mobility into the middle class, material prosperity, and a new form of democracy-consumer democracy. Julio Moreno describes how Mexico's industrial capitalism between 1920 and 1950 shaped the country's national identity, contributed to Mexico's emergence as a modern nation-state, and transformed U.S.-Mexican relations.According to Moreno, government programs and incentives were central to legitimizing the postrevolutionary government as well as encouraging commercial growth. Moreover, Mexican nationalism and revolutionary rhetoric gave Mexicans the leverage to set the terms for U.S. businesses and diplomats anxious to court Mexico in the midst of the dual crises of the Great Depression and World War II. Diplomats like Nelson Rockefeller and corporations like Sears Roebuck achieved success by embracing Mexican culture in their marketing and diplomatic pitches, while those who disregarded Mexican traditions were slow to earn profits.
Moreno also reveals how the rapid growth of industrial capitalism, urban economic displacement, and unease caused by World War II and its aftermath unleashed feelings of spiritual and moral decay among Mexicans that led to an antimodernist backlash by the end of the 1940s.

Yankee Go Home: Canadians and Anti-Americanism
J. L. Granatstein Manufacturer: HarperCollins Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0006385419 |
Book Description
Nothing makes Canadians angrier than the sense that they are being bullied by the United States. From the time of the American Revolution, anti-American feeling has been a defining part of Canadian life. And yet, as J.L. Granatstein argues in this articulate and opinionated exploration of Anti-Americanism in Canada, the United States has been too easy a target for our animosities and insecurities.Yankee Go Home? traces the winding course of these anti-American feelings over two centuries - from the United Empire Loyalists who fled north to escape unbridled republicanism, through the early twentieth century when the barons of business were determined to keep out U.S. competition, to the post-war period when Canadian nationalists took to the cry. Granatstein maintains that what began as a justifiable fear of invasion eventually became a tool of the economic and political elites bent on preserving their power.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting read; balanced treatment.......1998-07-30
Granatstein provides a thorough history of anti-Americanism, which is rooted in the expulsion of British loyalists from the U.S. colonies during the Revolutionary War to the inhospitable reaches of Upper Canada (now Ontario). Events such as the U.S. "invasion" of Canada during its War of 1812 with British aggressors have entered Canadian mythology as naked American aggression toward peaceful Canucks. This aggression and disrespect for the sovereignty of other nations, of course, is a fundamental tenet of U.S. policy in the eyes of many Canadians. ! In reality, of course, the U.S. enetered Canada during that war to extinguish British forces, harbored by Canadian colonists, that were making periodic destructive forays into New York and Vermont.
Granatstein also lucidly explains the great 20th-century British "betrayal" of Canada during WW-I when the bankrupt Brits were forced to turn to the U.S. for men, materiel and money in order to defeat the Germans. This essentially pushed Canada into the arms of the U.S. as America became the defacto world power in the wake of the war. This "betrayal" underpins most modern Canadian antipathy of America. It is interesting that it appears an article of faith among modern Canadians that the U.S. revolution against Britain was fundamentally illegitimate and the root of much evil in world today.
This list goes on and on, and Granatstein is steely in his objectivity. After listening to the shrill knee-jerk denunciations of the U.S. that are staples of daily Ca! nadian media and political discourse, one can turn to this ! book to understand their genesis. It is especially sad in these days of continuing friction between central and western English-speaking Canada and its Francophone and maritime provinces that Canadians conveniently seek an external locus of control on which to blame their problems.
This is a fine and wonderful country; if only its citizens would exorcise their insecurities and move forward. Reading this book with an open mind and unflinching introspection would be a productive move in that direction. It takes much more effort and honesty for one to read this book and reappraise Canadian bigotry toward America than it does to turn on Jerry Springer and indulge in sweeping, facile generalizations about U.S. society.
"YGH" should be required reading at the CBC, Globe and Mail, and in parliament.
