    Book Description

The Swiss architect Peter Märkli is best known for La Congiunta, the gallery in the canton of Ticino that houses the reliefs of the sculptor Hans Josephson. He has also designed many residential projects in Switzerland. His unconventional approach, combined with his understanding of materials and color, make him a unique figure in contemporary European architecture.

Approximations focuses on Märkli’s work from 1982 to the present. It traces the professional and political impact on Märkli’s early work of Hans Josephson and the architect Rudolph Olgiati. It also shows how the elemental, almost "archaic" quality of Märkli’s work is influenced by a wide variety of sources, including Greek antiquity, the Renaissance, the simple farmhouses of the Po Valley, African and Mexican art, and Matisse’s paintings. The book contains an essay by Mohsen Mostafavi and an extensive conversation between Märkli and Marcel Meili.

Beautiful step-by-step illustrations that REALLY take you step by step and are clear. I think you'll get the most out of this if you're not an absolute beginner, but I'd recommend it for anyone's collection of watercolor instruction books.

      Book Description

A caustic and hilarious love story set in 1990s New York City.

Bob Fingerman's Beg the Question tells the story of Rob and Sylvia, two twenty-somethings navigating the labyrinth of New York City life. Imagine a cross between Seinfeld and Caligula, set in Manhattan, and you'll have an idea of Fingerman's caustic wit. Beg the Question follows Rob and Sylvia's relationship through all of its ups-and-downs, from courtship to marriage, public sex to unwanted pregnancies, and everything in between. Performance art, extended families, the comic book industry and Screw magazine are just a few of the other topics subjected to Fingerman's satirical microscope.

Fingerman's mid-1990s comic book series Minimum Wage was a breakthrough success for Fingerman, and this marks the first collection of the entire run, retouched (many pages are substantially or entirely redrawn) with added gray tones and almost 40 pages of never-before-published material. The deluxe hardcover format makes Beg the Question a perfect holiday purchase for Gen Xers facing the reality that Nevermind came out over a decade ago and the mortgage payment is due this week. Featuring an introduction by noted novelist and television writer Jerry Stahl.

5 out of 5 stars This book is crazy good!.......2006-11-17

Man...sometimes there are books that are so near-and-dear to you that they are extremely difficult to try to review and put into words.

Minimum Wage was a book I first read years ago when it was initially released in single issues. The book was simply a semi-autobiographical yarn about an artist struggling through his days while living with his girlfriend. I was living with someone in Los Angeles when I first read it. The book hooked me immediately (but not just because of the domestic similarities).

Fast forward many years ahead, where Fantagraphics has now collected it all under the new title of Beg The Question. It's a collection of every single scattered Minimum Wage issue to have come out, plus some original material. The book weighs in at a hefty 230 pages of graphic novel work, plus a few pages of prose (including an introduction by Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller fame).

In addition to all of that, Bob Fingerman has gone back to touch up every page (and nearly every panel). He had gotten feedback about how the star of the book, Rob Hoffman, had an inconsistent look regarding his age. So he went back to touch it up for this collection and it shows. I remembered Rob Hoffman fluctuating in looks pretty often and not looking to be in his 20s many times. It's nice to see a collection of the work that really seems, at this point, to have defined Fingerman's career wind up getting this sort of treatment.

As mentioned, this book is semi-autobiographical. Both Bob and "Rob" worked doing strips for porn and satire magazines. This is evident through the story itself and the artwork. Bob's evokes memories of some of the best style of art you've seen in Cracked (where he worked) and MAD magazines. There is a gritty-yet-cartoony feel to his artwork that I've always enjoyed. Thinking about it made me remember how Fingerman doesn't draw a lot of "pretty" people...he draws real people. Don't get me wrong: Rob's lady in the book, Sylvia, looks extremely hot (for a cartoon chick) many times. But I'm trying to emphasize that he draws real people, warts and all.

He writes them that way, as well. Every character has their flaws and weaknesses. The star of the book, like many of us, seems to see more of the bad in him than the good. In fact, I think that much of the best qualities in him are communicated just by the suffering that he has the strength to get through and the quality people that obviously appreciate having him in their lives. Since he's basically writing himself here, that seems pretty brave.

There are many things about this book that make it difficult to review. The 230 pages worth of material doesn't really help. But I think what makes it the most difficult is that it really has a bit of that Seinfeld "it's a show about nothing" syndrome. While it is true that the story really walks us through the relationship of Rob and Sylvia (through dating, living together, engagement, and eventual marriage), you can't say that the book is about that. There is so much else going on that has little to do with that journey. There's Rob's struggle to succeed with his art career, his relationship with his friends, and then the idiosyncrasies of all his friends displayed separate from their relationship to Rob.

The only thing that every chapter has in common throughout this book is its honesty. It deals with unplanned pregnancy (and subsequent abortion), death, career stagnation, illness, uncertainty, neurosis, jealousy, and "the wandering eye". Through it all, it makes you laugh and occasionally touches your heart. The only complaint I have about the book is in Bob Fingerman's address to the reader where he states he has more of this story to tell, but he plans on telling it anywhere BUT in a comic book. Sadly, I don't know that he'll get the chance or that any other format will ever be able to match this work here.

3 out of 5 stars the question begged, "why is this so revered? (2 1/2 stars).......2004-04-19

While I have to admit to being engrossed enough that I read the whole thing, I can't say I enjoyed this book. I hate to be shallow but one huge turn off for me is that his work is aesthetically unappealing to me. Fingerman has some talent and yet his drawing are sooooo ugly. I couldn't stand it. It's not that I only like to look on "beautiful" people, but I found Fingerman's drawings to be grotesque. Case in point: Rob Hoffman's eyebrows look like Vienna sausages and you can't tell if the character's are sweating or have pustules on their skin. As far as the storylines go, I guess I didn't find it terribly interesting. Realistic, yes. Interesting, not really. I think there is a lot of potential there--all the characters as individuals are interesting. But their experiences together weren't particularly engaging. Maybe the book means more to New Yorkers; seems like a lot of the other amazon readers who've rated it are from the Big Apple. But for me, this book was nothing special.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2003-03-07

The art and story are just fantastic. It makes me want to move back to N.Y. I would recommend this to anyone who loves great art wrapped and great story telling.

      5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2003-01-12

Bob Fingerman links blazingly funny New York moments to the powerful narrative of a boy in love. It reads beautifully and is gorgeously drawn, casually showing the errata of a young artist's life: the ridiculous pathos of selling illustrations to smalltime porn magazines; Coney Island weekends; Astoria before manhattanites moved there. He moves easily from mundane moments like moving into a new apartment, calmly drawing laughter from the classic lazy friend to scenes so specific to his life - a friend getting into a fight at a comics convention with a competitor for rare Godzilla figurines over his stripper girlfriend's bizarre attire; or attending his grandmother's tiny funeral with a distant father and his puzzled lover. All of the characters in the book are disturbingly, hilariously real. The book is a delight - I'm sure that because it is a graphic novel, it won't get the attention it deserves - so you have the rare opportunity to know something wonderful that is not widely disseminated.

5 out of 5 stars real life NYC style.......2003-01-04

Having lived in NYC and having seen the reality of it all, BTQ's real life portrayal amusingly illuminates what really goes on. Fingerman's witty dialogue and prosaic settings should tell everybody who wants to move to NYC what they are really getting into. And everyone should have a sex life like Rob and Sylvia.

Life's lessons are well written. It's a great book!

From the supplier: The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 used by health food marketers on dietary supplements does not provide a clear definition of usage for nutraceutical products. The law's definition of health claims and structure/function claims are the two main reasons for the difficulty experienced by manufacturers in applying the law to nutraceuticals. Ingredients of nutraceuticals like botanicals are also not included in the law's list of food additives.

                                  Book Description

This book examines the high unemployment that has plagued five European countries—France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom—for more than a decade. Its methodology focuses on the mechanisms that prevent employers and employees from adjusting promptly to changing market opportunities. Chief among these mechanisms are outdated economic structures, the power of labor unions, rising nonwage labor costs, and the disparity between unemployed workers and available jobs. Although cross-country differences indicate that there is no common cause for joblessness in Europe, the book discusses a unique characteristic of the European labor market—that unemployment not only rises during recessions, but does not fall when economic weaknesses are overcome.

Self-help materials have become a prime source of psychological advice for millions of Americans. While many self-help resources provide high-quality information, others may be misleading, inaccurate, or even harmful. This indispensable volume reveals which are the good ones, which are the bad ones, and why. Based on the results of 5 acclaimed national studies involving over 2,500 mental health professionals, the book reviews and rates 600+ self-help books, autobiographies, and popular films. In addition, hundreds of Internet sites are described and evaluated by a clinical psychologist, and valuable listings are provided of national and online support groups. The concluding chapter presents practical guidelines for selecting an effective self-help resource. Addressing 28 prevalent clinical disorders and life challenges--from ADHD, Alzheimer's, and anxiety disorders, to marital problems and mood disorders, to weight management and women's issues--this timely book will be tremendously useful to consumers and professionals alike.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Self-help is big business.......2001-07-12

Self-help is big business. According to Gerald Rosen (1993) as many as 2000 self-help books are published each year. However, only a very few have been evaluated empirically. This sad state of affairs is a poor response to the appeal made by Rosen (1987) that self-help books should first be evaluated empirically before being sold to the general public. Additionally, the little research that has been done on do-it-yourself treatment books sometimes demonstrates major limitations in their usefulness. Yet psychologists continue to develop and market new programs with increasingly exaggerated claims. This is potentially a problem. Especially as psychologists often use self-help books as adjuncts to their clinical practice (Starker, 1988). The good news from research (e.g. Gould & Clum, 1993) is that certain self-help programs can be quite effective. Fairburn's Binge Eating Disorder treatment (Carter & Fairburn, 1998) and the Albany protocol for Panic Disorder (Barlow & Craske, 1994) are two good examples. In Gould and Clum's (1993) meta-analysis, fears, depression, headaches, and sleep disturbances were especially amenable to self-help approaches. Sometimes with effect sizes as large as for therapist assisted treatments.

How can busy clinicians keep up with the flood of new self-help books, and know which to recommend? Guilford Press offers a solution. In an attempt to help the clinicians a guide to self-help resources in mental health has been published. It includes ratings and reviews of more than 600 self-help books, autobiographies and popular films. It also includes hundreds of Internet sites, and listings of online support groups. The book addresses 28 prevalent clinical disorders and life challenges - from Schizophrenia, Anxiety and Mood Disorders to Career Development, Stress Management and Relaxation.

To determine the usefulness of the self-help resources a series of national studies have been conducted over the past 7 years. The methodology consisted of a lengthy survey mailed to clinical and counselling psychologists residing throughout the USA. A total of 2,500 psychologists contributed with their expertise and judgement in evaluating the books, movies, and Internet sites. The self-help resources were rated on a 5-point scale (-2 to +2). These data were converted into a one to five star rating (negative ratings were given a dagger). On this basis, 19% of the self-help books were rated as "very helpful" and fortunately only 1% as "very harmful" [e.g. the assertiveness training book Winning Through Intimidation by Ringer (1973) and the weight management book the Beverly Hills Diet by Mazel (1981). Interestingly, many of the books by Scientologist guru L Ron Hubbard are categorized as extremely bad].

When looking more closely at a specific disorder, let us say for example panic disorder, there are some good books that I feel are missing. This is probably because of the rating criteria. In order for a book to be included in this self-help guide the psychologists used as referees had to know about the book beforehand. It was their rating of previously read books that mattered. Hence, if there were good books out there that had not been read by many referees [like the Australian panic disorder workbook by Franklin (1996)], they would automatically receive a lower rating. Thus, a low rating does not necessarily mean that a book is less helpful than a higher rated book - only that it has not reached a wide audience. For example, an excellent book, An End to Panic (Zuercher-White, 1998), previously recommended in a review article (Carlbring, Westling, & Andersson, 2000) was described as "highly regarded by the psychologists in our national studies but not well known, leading to a 3-star rating." (p. 79). Another thing that disturbed me was that this particular author's name was misspelled. Instead of Zuercher the surname appeared as Luerchen. No wonder the book was "not well known"! One wonders how many other errors this survey included.

In a perfect world all self-help books would be scrutinized in the same manner as other treatments. However, as a majority of the published books still have not been evaluated, this new guide to self-help is a step in the right direction. Despite questionable inclusion criteria and a few errors I thoroughly recommend this excellent guide to self-help.

Thus, a low rating does not necessarily mean that a book is less helpful than a higher rated book – only that it has not reached a wide audience. For example, an excellent book, An End to Panic (Zuercher-White, 1998), previously recommended in a review article (Carlbring, Westling, & Andersson, 2000) was described as “highly regarded by the psychologists in our national studies but not well known, leading to a 3-star rating.” (p. 79). Another thing that disturbed me was that this particular author’s name was misspelled. Instead of Zuercher the surname appeared as Luerchen. No wonder the book was “not well known”! One wonders how many other errors this survey included.

In a perfect world all self-help books would be scrutinized in the same manner as other treatments. However, as a majority of the published books still have not been evaluated, this new guide to self-help is a step in the right direction. Despite questionable inclusion criteria and a few errors I thoroughly recommend this excellent guide to self-help

5 out of 5 stars Reveals the good ones, bad ones, how to tell the difference.......2001-01-16

From books and movies to the Internet, Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Resources in Mental Health provides a strong survey of self-help resources in mental health which reveals the good ones, bad ones, and how general consumers can tell the difference. Five national studies involving over 2,500 mental health professionals lends to a rating of over six hundred titles and films, along with Internet sites evaluated by a clinical psychologist.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone interested in self-help........2000-12-04

This book contains reviews / lists of the best (and worst) of self-help books / movies and internet resources. It has been compiled using surveys of 1000's of mental health professionals and gives essential guidance on which resources are helpful, and which are best left alone.

The book is clearly-written and well laid out - each chapter relates to a specific problem area eg mood disorders, men's issues, abuse, anxiety etc.

I found the recommendations on books particularly helpful - one can immediately determine which are the best books to read on their own specific problem. Clearly, the input of mental health professionals gives a "scientific" basis on recommendations which in turn leads to a systematic process of choosing which resources should be given credence.

Essential reading if you want to build up a collection of serious (i.e. most useful) self-help resources.

Keeping pace with the ever-changing world of self-help, the revised and expanded edition of this indispensable reference helps consumers and professionals distinguish high-quality self-help resources from those that are misleading, inaccurate, or even harmful. The number of resources reviewed has increased by more than 60%, to over 1,000 self-help books, autobiographies, and popular films. Ratings now embody the collective wisdom of more than 3,000 mental health professionals. Supplementing their eight national studies, the authors also describe and evaluate hundreds of Internet sites and provide valuable listings of self-help and support groups. The volume is organized around 36 frequently encountered clinical problems and life challenges, with entirely new chapters covering posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, youth violence, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and suicide. The concluding chapter delineates 11 key strategies for selecting an effective self-help resource.

Born in Scotland, Philip Gray is now a journalist living in Canada, but in WW2 he found himself captain of the crew of a 'mighty Lanc', operating with 186 Squadron as the RAF took the war right into the heart of Germany. Both Gray and his crew felt they were in charge of the undisputed king of the skies, but danger lurked around every corner and on every mission.

In an engaging yet frank style, Gray reveals the true relationships between himself and his team, and between the team members themselves. He also searches his own soul as he struggles to survive in love and war.

Although I have not actually had a chance yet to fully finish reading this great book, I would like to say that I have met Philip Gray personally at the Toronto Aerospace Museum on the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Downsview.

Having talked to Philip several times, I can say that he remains very sharp minded, and can tell you all kinds of interesting stories from his colorful life.

It's very rare to meet someone who has such excellent recall of times nearly 60 years in the past.

If you're ever in Toronto, you should drop by the museum, and get to see the restoration (in progress) of a Lancaster bomber. Philip is around quite often to give you a personal tour.

                                        Book Description

The Atlas of Wintering North American Birds represents the effects of thousands of people who have participated in the Christmas Bird Counts, an annual event sponsored since 1900 by the National Audubon Society. Unlike a conventional field guide, the Atlas doesn't show what birds look like, but rather tells where to find them in the winter months.

Terry Root has used the data from the 1963-72 counts to provide the first large-scale biogeographical account of birds wintering in North America. Using sophisticated computer techniques, Root has translated the data into both traditional contour maps and innovative new maps that stimulate three dimensions. The maps show at a glance that, for example, the Baltimore Oriole winters primarily along the eastern seaboard, with the densest populations in Florida between Tallahassee and Gainesville and in North Carolina from Rocky Mount to the Croatan National Forest.
