Robert Farber is not only recognized as one of today's foremost photographers, he is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the Photographer of the Year Award in 1987 from the Photographic Manufacturer's Association and the ASP International Award sponsored by the Professional Photographers of America.

Known for his photographs of landscapes, fashion and nudes, Farber has also done work for major manufacturers. His book, Natural Beauty: Farber Nudes, published in 2001 received the Art Director's Award for color photography. Now, with his ninth book, Robert Farber: American Mood, he focuses on America's recent past with several of the images dating from 1970.

Farber's latest work may best be described in his own words: "The photographs that make up By the Sea, as I look back on them, were shot mainly when on a commercial assignment. In the same way, that's how the bulk of my American Mood evolved. Especially when I started shooting a number of back-to-back campaigns for Wrangler Jeans, is when I realized the amount of images I was accumulating had the Americana feel. American Mood is not a book that records a place, but rather romanticizes America past which carries through in the same way as my basic photographic style."

We find a photo of a white clapboard farm with just a portion of a pickup truck seen at the back, a diner lit against the night sky, a De Soto parked by the curb in the early morning fog, an Amish farmer working his land, and many more. Each is an evocative image sure to trigger memories in most of us.

Each photo is accompanied by a brief yet informative text telling where, when and how the shot was taken. An added bonus is the section devoted to Farber's techniques and methods.

This book should be read by anyone who has responsibility within the area of financial risk management, if for nothing else, then for the unique insights into that sphere of management. The lessons are invaluable. More than that, however, the modeling method used is equally unique. What I have seen of the high priced consulting methods available for sale in this field require the client to take the mathematical equations of the consultant on faith. Nersesian's method is something that anyone skilled in both financial management and spreadsheet computing can use to prove the soundness of the recommendations for their company's solutions.

This book has it all!.......2001-10-11

Although it is intended for medical students, this comprehensive book would be useful to a wide variety of readers. I am a psychologist and teach medical residents, and I think this book is a marvelous review of (as its title says) Behavior and Medicine. It's excellent for students because it includes sample Board exam questions, but it's excellent for more advanced professionals because it reviews the basics and provides good ideas for further reading. Phenomenal illustrations also. Often edited books are uneven in their coverage, but this one has overcome that problem. A gem!

The program is accomplished through the collaboration of the school library media specialist and the language arts teacher. Senator outlines ways in which they can collaboratively plan, teach, and assess units which use language arts as tools. She includes specific instructional programs, suggestions for staff development, examples of questions, organizers, and units for grades six through eight, ideas for creating schedules, and methods of working together to develop materials for instruction. This program reflects the restructuring movement in American education. It emphasizes process as well as content, uses authentic material, and stresses interdisciplinary learning and learning by doing. The first part deals with literature as a subject and offers many practical units for the library media specialist and the language arts teacher to use in collaboratively teaching students inquiry and a framework for literature. Armed with these tools, students are able to read, discuss, think, and write about more challenging and interesting literature. Senator offers many ideas for "extending" literature through creative dramatics, storytelling, booktalks, and book shares. The second half of the book shows how to plan interdisciplinary units so that students, through resource-based learning, may learn to use new technologies and information problem-solving. The work also includes some units for elementary and secondary schools. Because of its innovative methods and practical ideas it will be a boon to library media specialists, language arts and English teachers, reading specialists, and library schools and undergraduate and graduate schools of education.

School media centers should support the curriculum. Ideally, teachers and school media specialists should collaborate to make the best use of all the resources in the school media center. However, too often both groups work in isolation, failing to capitalize on the potential benefits students would reap from their collaboration. This book is a great starting point for anyone seeking to establish greater collaboration between language arts teachers and school media specialists. Senator outlines a program which includes school media specialists and language arts teachers planning, teaching, and assessing together, rather than in isolation. In addition to describing the program, Senator provides many useful sample resource units that can be used immediately by teachers and school media specialists. The book primarily focuses on the middle school level, but Senator also includes a chapter on how to adapt the program to elementary and secondary levels. Overall, it is a wonderful idea source! Teachers, librarians, and most importantly, students, should benefit from the use of a program like Senator's.
