Lots of excellent industrial history.......2001-07-30
While the title of the book precludes a history of the Hoover dam. I found it to contain much more. The book does give a very good acounting of the building of the Hoover Dam.It also covers the beginnigs of some of the largest corporations in the world.

Book Description
Tall, skinny, short, round, squat, awkward, slouched, tanned, bashful, and sometimes unknowingly beautiful, the adolescents in Rineke Dijkstra's Beach Portraits stand alone, the ocean rolling behind them. Clad in little more than bathing suits, these young people are striking to behold. Remarkably clear and formally classical, each subject is frontally posed and shot straight on; the resulting photographs participate in a cold, quasi-scientific categorization reminiscent of the work of August Sander and Thomas Ruff. Yet Dijkstra's pictures are not just that--there is also something of the eccentric in them, something that comes closer to Diane Arbus's images. Seen together, the complete series of 20 Beach Portraits creates a kind of collective portrait of the existential insecurity and awkward beauty of youth.

Book Description
Milk, two sugars, and 12 months of wit for the millions of people who depend on their daily cup (make that cups) of joe, The New Yorker Caffeinated Calendar is an homage-in-cartoons to the beverage that fuels America. A store window advertises second-hand books--and reheated coffee. The cafe Tea & Sympathy displays a new sign: "Coffee and a Kick in the Pants." With contributors including George Booth, Roz Chast, and other favorite New Yorker cartoonists, it's a year of caffeine-stoked whimsy. The calendar has a magnetic strip (perfect for hanging on the fridge), but also a plastic hook, so it can hang on a crowded wall calendar or bulletin board.

The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 might have signaled the end of slavery, but the beginning of freedom remained far out of sight for most of the four million enslaved African Americans living in the South. Even after the Civil War, when thousands of former slaves flocked to southern cities in search of work, they found the demands placed on them as wage-earners disturbingly similar to those they had faced as slaves: seven-day workweeks, endless labor, and poor treatment. In To 'Joy My Freedom, author Tera W. Hunter takes a close look at the lives of black women in the post-Civil War South and draws some interesting conclusions. Hunter's interest in the subject was initially sparked by her research of the washerwomen's strike of 1881. This labor protest by more than 3,000 Atlanta laundresses is symbolic, Hunter posits, of African American women's ability to build communities and practice effective, if rough-and-ready, political strategies outside the mainstream electoral system.
To 'Joy My Freedom is a fascinating look at the long-neglected story of black women in postwar southern culture. Hunter examines the strategies these women (98 percent of whom worked as domestic servants) used to cope with low wages and poor working conditions and their efforts to master the tools of advancement, including literacy. Hunter explores not only the political, but the cultural, too, offering an in-depth look at the distinctive music, dance, and theater that grew out of the black experience in the South.
Book Description
As the Civil War drew to a close, newly emancipated black women workers made their way to Atlanta--the economic hub of the newly emerging urban and industrial south--in order to build an independent and free life on the rubble of their enslaved past. In an original and dramatic work of scholarship, Tera Hunter traces their lives in the postbellum era and reveals the centrality of their labors to the African-American struggle for freedom and justice. Household laborers and washerwomen were constrained by their employers' domestic worlds but constructed their own world of work, play, negotiation, resistance, and community organization.
Hunter follows African-American working women from their newfound optimism and hope at the end of the Civil War to their struggles as free domestic laborers in the homes of their former masters. We witness their drive as they build neighborhoods and networks and their energy as they enjoy leisure hours in dance halls and clubs. We learn of their militance and the way they resisted efforts to keep them economically depressed and medically victimized. Finally, we understand the despair and defeat provoked by Jim Crow laws and segregation and how they spurred large numbers of black laboring women to migrate north.
Hunter weaves a rich and diverse tapestry of the culture and experience of black women workers in the post-Civil War south. Through anecdote and data, analysis and interpretation, she manages to penetrate African-American life and labor and to reveal the centrality of women at the inception--and at the heart--of the new south.
Customer Reviews:
A worthy read.......2000-11-27
Although it is not perfect, Hunter provides an engrossing look at southern black women's labor (especially in Atlanta) from the end of the Civil War to the Great Migration. With emancipation, these women searched for identity as free women, as paid workers, and as African Americans. White woutherners developed institutions and laws to restrict the newfound freedom black southerners sought to enjoy. Black women workers responded through community awareness and activism, showing intelligence and the desire to better their lives. Hunter's innovative use of sources shapes her work and helps the women's voices come alive. Because of limited African-Americal literacy in the early Reconstruction period, Hunter turned to newspapers and white southners' diaries fo flesh-out black women's experiences. Although problematic, the attention given in them to black women domestics demonstrated the division of both race and gender. Hunter also incorporates unique sources like dance steps so show the many ways newly freed women sought to define themselves. Her haunting use of illustrations reinforces the oppression and struggle for freedom black women laborers faced. As someone who knew very little about this aspect of history, Hunter's work has developed my interest in this time.

Book Description
Mons, le Cateau, Notre Dame de Lorette, First Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge, Festubert, Second Ypres, Loos, Fromelles, Vimy Ridge, Third Ypres, Cambrai, Fourth Ypres.
Interest in the battlefields of The Great War has increased exponentially in the last 10 years and credit for this must rest in large measure on the shoulders of Major and Mrs Holt. Not only did they pioneer the concept of 'Battlefield Tour' holidays but their books, of which this is the latest, have long been regarded as the Bible for tourists making the pilgrimage to the scenes of battles whether in Flanders, Normandy, Gallipoli or Arnhem.
The Holts, appreciating that today the areas visited has broadened considerably have researched a much wider book than their earlier Somme and Ypres Guides. This is the first part of the results of their labours and the second covering the Southern battlefields will follow later in the 2004.
Customer Reviews:
Back to the Front.......2007-06-29
Tourism, aided by easy Chunnel access, has made World War One's Western Front a significant British tourist destination. Veterans groups and family history researchers have joined history buffs and day trippers to make the battlefields, cemeteries, and memorials of the Great War a busy place. Predictably, sites associated with British and Commonwealth forces have been especially favored. While it always helps to know Flemish or French, neither are necessary to visit Ieper (French Ypres, British slang Wipers), Vimy, or the Somme where English is a second language.
If you're planning such a trip, you'll quickly encounter Tonie and Valmai Holt. Their numerous books and maps (twenty-three at last count, and growing) are the standard against which other battlefield guides are judged. Start with this volume (and its companion, The Western Front - South) and you'll be on your way. The Holts have driven all the fields, and provide detailed maps and directions to take you on the roads and tracks that cross them. {They assume you brought your car from Britain, and provide all their distances in miles rather than kilometers.} They miss very little. Tiny cemeteries, roadside shrines, wall plaques, and local amenities are all here (and keep in mind there are well over 100 cemeteries maintained just by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.). It sometimes gets a bit overpowering, and the casual traveler may want to consult a "best of" list or focus upon the sites that the Holts illustrate with attractive color photos that make this a fine souvenir of any trip. Be aware that their guides can send you to some moving experiences that are off the main paths: their advice at the Somme took us to the Devonshire Trench Cemetery and the 38th (Welsh) Division Memorial.
Their books are obviously works for the tourist. The Holts offer only brief historical summaries, so you will want to read a good general history of the 1914-1918 war before heading out. {We recommend John Keegan's Pictorial History of World War One, but there are many others.} You also need to remember that the Belgians and French, while welcoming visitors, want to live modern lives in the areas liberated from the Kaiser's forces. Surprisingly few sites retain the "feel" of the trenches (the Holts will steer you to them), and cemeteries and memorials far outnumber museums. The Holts admire valor and sacrifice, and they will tell you why those sites deserve respect. Some of their harshest criticisms are directed at those who poorly maintain a site. Two weeks and nearly a thousand kilometers of driving this summer from Ieper to St. Mihiel with the Holts convinced us they are the guides of choice. Take them with you when you go back to the Front.
Book Description
When the First World War broke out in August 1914 the Imperial German Army mistakenly assumed that the BEF – 'that contemptible little army' – would be easily defeated. They were stopped in their tracks by the numerically inferior British force, whose excellent marksmanship cost the closed packed German ranks dear. Eventually forced to fall back by overwhelming German numbers, the British carried out a masterful fighting retreat across Belgium and northern France. At Mons, nine and a half British battalions held four German divisions at bay for an entire day. This book examines not just the battle of Mons itself but also the ensuing British retreat including the actions at Le Cateau and Villers-Cotterêts.
Customer Reviews:
the unravelling of the Von Schlieffen plan.......2007-10-01
Lots of pictures in this book that I'd never seen before and excellent maps throughout as well as the usual great Osprey artwork. Von Schlieffen said to "keep the right wing strong" but needs of the German army in other areas necessitated a reduction on the Belgian front. The British who were responsible for carrying the defense of Belgium were able to pick apart the German schlieffen plan at Mons and surrounding areas. The Germans absorbed high casualties using frontal assaults little removed from the Franco-Prussian war while the British retreated giving the Germans a "Pyrric victory".Lots of human interest stories of Victoria Crosses. At Mons field manuevers and infantry and cavalry assaults were used and marked a ray of hope for the German army that it could still remain quick and mobile. Things rapidly changed as the British use of artillery and machine guns indicated that the face of warfare was rapidly changing.I'm sure the Germans must have lost alot of confidence with anywhere from 12,000 to as high as 30,000 casaulties estimated.(German record keeping was not real good),and the British approximately had 8,000.The German army grossly outnumbered the BEF at Mons but due to imperfections of scouting and reconaissance information, they were unaware of it.A skeleton crew of British made splinters of Schlieffen's slamming door at Mons.Already at Mons you can see a division between France and Britain over placement of troops. The northern front(Belgium) is seen as Britains'responsibility while the French take the southern front(France itself). The area between these 2 fronts were squabbled over with each country saying the other was responsible for its defense.
For modelers and historians.......2000-05-26
This book provides, in the usual Osprey Battles format, a nice overview of the first great battle fought by the BEF in WWI. There are plenty of black and white photos, as well as color drawings featuring uniforms, armament, and so on.
If you are a modeler, you could add Osprey's THE OLD CONTEMPTIBLES for a more complete vision of the BEF, and THE GERMAN ARMY 1914-1918 for an "other-side-of-the-trenches" view.

Book Description
Here is an outstanding personal memoir penned by a German infantry officer recalling his experiences during the initial days and weeks of the war in the West, July-September 1914.
Walter Bloem was a Captain in the German 12th Grenadier Regiment (Royal Prussian Grenadier Regiment Prinz Carl von Preuen, 2nd Brandenburg, Nr 12 - to give his unit its full title). His narrative gives a superb insight into the outbreak of war and his regiment's mobilisation, followed by the advance through Belgium and France, including the author's participation at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne. His account of what it was like to face Britain's 'Old Contemptibles' at Mons is particularly valuable.
Before the war, the author was a novelist, and The Advance from Mons clearly shows this - it is written with a great eye for detail, careful yet vivid descriptions abound and importantly, from a historical perspective, the book was penned whilst Herr Bloem convalesced from a wound he received at the battle of the Aisne. Such was the quality of his writing, that J.E. Edmonds, the British official historian of the Great War commented: "Some of the scenes ... are so truly and vividly depicted that I gave translations of them in the Official History, feeling that they could not be bettered."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent first-hand account.......2005-02-01
Walter Bloem was an aspiring novelist and officer in the reserves in the year 1914. He had reached a point in his life when he felt he could devote himself more to his passion of writing and the future looked promising--but in August 1914, that all changed with the outbreak of war. In a matter of days he went from being a genlteman and novelist to Captain and company commander in the 12th Brandenburg Grenadiers, which was part of III Corps in Kluck's Army. As an accomplished writer, what we have in The Advance from Mons is an astute and very readable account of the early weeks of the war from the perspective of a frontline officer. An excellent first-hand account--a must read for those with an interest in the Great War.

Book Description
The Angel of Mons recounts the tale of the advancement of German troops through Mons in 1914, to meet the ill-prepared British Expeditionary Force. The British troops were forced to retreat, with little hope of saving the lives of those at the front. It is in these extreme circumstances that many of the wounded and dying soldiers brought back from the Western Front, reported having been rescued by strange angelic forms in the sky that protected them from massacre - The Angel of Mons.
David Clarke follows this and other myths and rumours in an effort to trace the reality behind the Angel of Mons and discover what it was the soldiers saw.
Customer Reviews:
A Thorough Examination of the Legend.......2007-09-09
The legend is that during a massive German attack at Mons, just as the retreating Tommies were in danger of annihilation, a spectral army (St. George and angels in one version, and a force of bow-men in another) appear and break the German attack. But did this really happen?
Clarke's book digs into all the details behind what really happened that day at Mons in August 1914, going beyond all the second- and third-hand sources to trace what can really be known from eyewitnesses. He reconstructs the history in which a valiant British rearguard action succeeds in slowing the German advance, because the Germans are unfamiliar with the rapid-fire weaponry of the British and incorrectly assume that the British have reinforcements entering the battle. Afterwards, some battle-fatigued British troops talk of a "light" or "glowing cloud" which they saw in the sky during the battle.
Meanwhile, a British journalist named Arthur Machen has written an obscure piece of fiction titled "The Bowmen" which is published in a British newspaper. In times desperate for hope during a dark period of the war, the story is seized upon and retold and embellished as truth, combining with "friend of a friend" accounts and some deliberate embellishment to grow into the legend of the Angels of Mons. The author examines the possibility that the legend was a product of British propaganda efforts to build morale among the people. Meanwhile, the hapless Machen watches his creation take on a life of its own as, despite his continuous protestations that his story was complete fiction, others assure him that it must indeed be true.
This book is a very interesting look at the development of what may be one of the first "urban legends" of the modern industrial age. The author briefly relates it to later legends surrounding WWII, UFO's and 9/11.
The Angel of Mons.......2006-07-17
Very enjoyable read. Mr. Clarke has provided a thorough and interesting book on a topic not discussed in much detail in other collections on The Great War.
Academic Examination of the Myth/Mystery.......2005-01-11
An excellent book examining the 'Angel of Mons'. The account is well researched and fully referenced. The evidence is fully traced and examined within the context and themes of the time. While books with similar titles may have an agenda, the author is only interested in a fair and thorough examination of the evidence.

Book Description
The battle of Mons in August 1914 endures as one of the British Army's greatest moments, despite the much larger actions fought in the next four years. The German timetable of conquest was briefly but fatally disrupted, and the experiences of that August battle had a decisive influence on Bernard Montgomery and other survivors who were to lead British forces through World War II and beyond.

Book Description
Bob Oakleaf (excerpt form the Foreward)
Non-game Bird Biologist, Wyoming Game and Fish Department
What we have here is a book that I can't categorize. But then that is to be expected. I defy anyone to categorize the author, Bert Raynes. It is a book for the browser as well as useful to the bird fanatic. More importantly, it will be most useful for the majority of us who just want to enjoy birds by learning more about new species or familiar species in different situations without the threat of cerebral overload.
This book features sixty species that have obviously been carefully chosen. The featured species will give the reader a good cross section of common species, the "high profile" birds; the unique species for which one has as good or better chance of observing in the Jackson Hole area as anywhere else in the United States; and some of Uncle Bert's favorites. This cross section gives serious birders, novices, or the experienced hobbyist, a decisive head start on enjoying and learning more about the avifauna of this unique area.
Customer Reviews:
Useful for beginners viewing from a car.......2004-10-27
This is not an exhaustive list of Grand Teton birds. Though I am far from expert, I regularly spotted birds that do not have a listing in the text. (The checklist in the back seems pretty exhaustive, though.)
However, the book is very useful if your interests lie in spotting birds in GTNP. Raynes knows the area well and discusses the habitats of the park, the birds to be found in each habitat, and provides a map showing you how to find what you want. The book provides a surer guide to finding things than a guide covering a wider area such as the Audubon guides. On the other hand, the Audubon guides provide much more coverage and are more dependable for identifying things that you see.
Another limitation of the book is that many of the habitats that Raynes discusses lie off-road. The book doesn't provide any guidance for finding trails that will get you to the habitat and birds you're looking for. Unless you want to stay in your car, you'll need a guide to trails.
If you do stay in your car, you should know that the road map is incomplete. For example, it does not show the dirt road out to Two Ocean Lake or the dirt road along the right bank of the Snake. (Both of these are really only for four-wheel drive vehicles but are useful access points to good habitat.)
The book would be most useful for beginning birders or park visitors who aren't really birders but would like to identify the birds that come their way. It is lightweight and will fit in many pants or jacket pockets.
