Not Inspiration for your Country Home.......2002-01-25

This is a photo essay with beautiful pictures. I was interested in Cabin ideas and this doesn't have any unless you want to vacation in a Mongolian yurt or an African mud hovel. Most of these homes wouldn't suit the homeless. 3 stars for the pretty photos but hey...I want my money back!

This is a wonderful resource for information on Hannah Hoch, and Berlin dada. Great account of Hannah's life,
and a complete collection of her work.

I admit I don't know much about art, that's why I read this book. I learned a lot about the Dada movement and also about Ms. Hoch. I'm still not sure if she is much of an artist, but I know she makes a damn fine sandwich.

The idea behind the issues of Marvel comics selected by Stan "The Man" Lee for "Marvel's Greatest Superhero Battles" is simply to answer those questions that have driven Marvel fans made for years: who is stronger, The Hulk or The Thing? Who talks funnier, The Silver Surger or The Mighty Thor? You get the idea.

Consequently, collected within these pages are the following: "Fantastic Four" #25, "The Hulk vs. The Thing!" by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, which continues in FF #26 "The Avengers Take Over!"; Daredevil #7, "In Mortal Combat with...Sub-Mariner!" by Lee and Wally Wood; "X-Men" #3, "Beware the Blob!" by Lee and Kirby; "The Silver Surfer" #4, "The Good, the Bad and the Uncanny!" by Lee and John Buscema, where Loki gets the Surfer to tangle with Thor; a three-part confrontation between Iron Man and the Sub-Mariner in "Tales of Suspense" #79, "Diaster!", #80 "When Fall the Might!" and #81 "The Power of Iron Man" by Lee and Gene Colan (with some help from Kirby); Dr. Strange versus Baron Mordo in "Beware...! Dormammu is Watching!", "The Pincers of Power!" and "Let There be Victory!" by Lee and Steve Ditko; and "The Amazing Spider-Man" #69, "Mission: Crush the Kingpin!" by Lee and John Romita (Sr.).

As you can see the collection gets off to a good start with the Hulk and the Thing getting it on, but the X-Men, Dr. Strange, and Spider-Man stories do not fit the spirit or the letter of the book's title. The idea here is supposed to be Marvel's superheroes fighting other Marvel superheroes. The Blob, Baron Mordo and the Kingpin do not count as superheroes. Granted, the Kingpin would go on to become one of the most intriguing villains in the Marvel universe this side of Victor von Doom, but there is no reason for any issue involving the Blob to be reprinted in color like this when there is an issue where the X-Men and the Avengers go toe-to-toe. Spider-Man has tangled with the Human Torch, the Hulk, and Daredevil, all within the first two years of his existence. The bottom line here is than Lee had a great idea and then somehow managed to make some mistooks in the execution.

Jose Antonio Gonzalez explores the relationship between unemployment, real wages and GDP growth. The study shows how lower inflation makes labor rigidities more costly in Latin America. He shows that compared to what happens in the US, GDP changes have a large effect on real wages and a smaller one on employment in Latin America. The book is a must-read for those academics and practitioners who wish to understand the behavior of labor markets in the region.

This book, The Commandos, was a very good read right up until the end. I enjoyed the in-depth study of the role of all the branches of the Special Forces. This book tells the story with the respect deserved by the men that risk their lives every day for this great nation. Thank you, Mr. Waller for your effort to put the heroic deeds of these brave men and into print for us to read.

Once you pick up Commandos, you won't be able to put it down. The author digs into the secret world of special ops warriors and their training and reveals unbelievable tactics, training, and actual combat action. These guys are the toughest humans alive.

Waller gives good information in the book which covers too wide of a topic for specifics. I wish he would have included the Marine Force Recon and PJ's or CCT's to make it more complete. But he did a good job on those that he did. He makes valid points about their training and correlating it back to their combat roles.

GREAT BOOK FOR BEGINNERS.......2003-08-05

I HAVE READ MUCH ABOUT SPECIAL FORCES AND TALKED TO MANY PEOPLE. I HAVE TO SAY THAT IT WAS A BIT GENERAL. BECAUSE IT WAS WRITTEN BY A JOURNALIST IT ISN'T REAL SPECIFIC. IF YOU HAVE NO OR LIMITED KNOWLEDGE ABOUT U.S. SPECIAL FORCES THEN THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. EVEN WITH MY KNOWLEDGE OF THEM I STILL LEARNED A FEW THINGS ABOUT SPECIAL FORCES.

Great book!.......2003-06-25

I read this book a few years ago and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone intersted in the US Special Forces.

Douglas Waller puts you right into the heart of the action as if you were right there standing side by side America's elite soldiers.

The prologue is a great introduction to the book and recalls a botched Special Forces (Green Beret) mission during Desert Storm that--instead of resulting in catastrophe--showed how brightly a compromised A-Team shined against incredible odds.

The rest of the book is just as good. This is one of the best books I've read on US Special Forces. Read it now!
