Illogical Organization, Unintelligible Text, Etc Frustrating.......2004-11-14

As stated in the back, "This book is the official catalogue for the exhibitions entitled photo text text photo at the MUSEION - Museum für Moderne Kunste, Bozen from September 13th to November 17th, 1996, and the Frankfurter Kunstverein from January 21st to March 3rd, 1997." In order, the book has a short essay "Image and Word, Photo and Text" by Andreas Hapkemeyer; photographs by 17 artists; a short essay "Between Text and Photo" by Peter Weiermair; photos by 32 artists (including the 17 toward the front of the book, plus 15 more); a list of works; and biographies, bibliographies, and artists' statements.

The #1 problem with this book is its organization. The 17 artists in the first section of photos are presented in apparently random order. The complete set of 32 artists - Vito Acconci, Vincenzo Agnetti, John Baldessari, Robert Barry, Joseph Beuys, Heiner Blum, Victor Burgin, Willie Doherty, Bernard Faucon, Hamish Fulton, Jochen Gerz, Gilbert & George, Jenny Holzer, Douglas Huebler, Peter Hutchinson, On Kawara, Karen Knorr, Joseph Kosuth, Barbara Kruger, Ketty La Rocca, Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Louise Lawler, Jean Le Gac, Ken Lum, Urs Lüthi, Duane Michals, Maurizio Nannucci, Shirin Neshat, Laura Padgett, Giulio Paolini, Olivier Richon, and Klaus Staeck - in the second section of photos are in alphabetical sequence. I don't see why the all photos couldn't have been in chronological or alphabetical order, or grouped by some sort of themes.

Second, some photographers using words in their works have been omitted. I'm thinking of John Hilliard's "Cause of Death," Carrie Mae Weems's "Sea Island Series," David Wojnarowicz's "[One day this kid...]", etc. Of course, the curators had to make choices in selecting the works, and mostly their choices were sound.

A 3rd problem is that some of the text in the photos is difficult to understand. In many works (e.g., on pages 27, 30, 41, 63-64, 86, 88, 94-95, 107-109, and 115-119) the text is not translated from Farsi, French, German, Greek, and Italian. In some works (e.g., on pages 16, 61, and 91) the text is too small.

Finally, some of the artists' statements (e.g., on pages 127-129, 131-132, 135-138, and 140-143) are untranslated. The preface and the two essays were apparently translated from German by John S. Southard; one would think that the publisher could have paid for a translation of the artists' statements as well.

Despite the problems mentioned above, however, the book occupies a unique niche in that I am unaware of other books that deal specifically with the use of words in photography. Obtain it from Amazon.com!

A killingly funny and delightful little book. Martin Archer, the author (Former King of Norway and World Champion Flower Arranger) has done nothing less than invent a totally original and new style of humor for our day. A terrific laugh-out-loud gift for that person who has everything!

NC State Bureu of Investigation Style of Report Writing.......2007-08-19

The book contains the similar writing methodology used by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. This is not the traditional report writing, but a more precise and understandable method of writing for the audience. You write a conclusion first to grab the reader's attention and then continue with the substantiation. A tip not in the book, but helpful is to maintain exhibits by using the officer's identification number followed by a dash with the exhibit number. Example as follows: 670-1...the next exhibit 670-2, etc. This method clearly identifies who seized the exhibit. This is a wonderful book that will provide a easier and more efficient method of report writing than the traditional chronological method. Highly recommended.

This book is reminiscent of the great Erma Bombeck with a spiritual twist. The way the author expresses her personal journey into motherhood not only inspired me but gave me great pride in the work we mothers do. Along with the witty story telling is a compelling undercurrent of strength, patience and determination. This book is an excellent read and a perfect gift as well.

This book was truly enjoyable to read! I have read it through and in parts 3 times! Each chapter is relevant to a parent (even if you do not participate in a foster care system). She is a master with words, wit, and wisdom. I have already given it as a gift to 4 different women!

This is that must-read book for every new mom!.......2001-09-27

I found this to be one of my favorite books when I became a new mother. It's full of support, information, and inspiration from so many moms! These moms thoughtfuly share their feelings, their real-life stories and things they've learned along the way. As I read and re-read this book, I feel like I'm sitting around a table with good friends. I really enjoyed the different sections -- Redefining Ourselves * Choosing Home * Taking Care of Ourselves * Living with Changes * Growing in Unexpected Ways. It addressed so many thoughts that were going through my mind and made me think about things I hadn't even thought about before. How exciting and satisfying to read a book of stories, and feel that you could have written so many of them. That wonderful "you took the words right out of my mouth" thought keeps reoccuring! This book legitimizes and supports so many feelings that new and veteran moms have along the road of parenting. Each story is so candidly written that you feel you are empathizing with your best friend. I have marked some stories that energize me as a mom, to read periodically. Otherwise, I enjoy flipping randomly to share another mother's intimate perspective. This is a terrific shower gift!

Good, Interesting Book.......2003-09-10

While in the US Navy, I served aboard aircraft carriers so I have no specific knowledge of submarines. What I do know comes from numerous conversations with my father in law who served aboard submarines in the 50's, 60's and 70's. It's interesting to see the antithetical reviews of the two submariners.

I read the book to find out what exactly is known (and not known) about the Thresher tragedy. I believe Polmar presents the facts and suppositions regarding the Thresher accident extremely well. Depending on which submariner is to be believed, I've either been tragically misinformed or I've learned something.

I highly recommend this book to those interested in learning what there is to know about the Thresher loss.

Insult to Injury.......2003-05-12

This rehashing by Norman Polmar of his 1964 publication has improved little with the passage of time and revision. The book offers little in the way of new insights- little was known about what transpired that tragic morning then, and little is known now. Neither the quality of the 1964 book nor any new information provide a compelling reason for a new edition.

Most of the book has a superficial feel to it and deteriorates the further Polmar strays from the world he knows. He obviously never served on submarines and would have benefitted from having his book read prior to publication by someone who has. Speculation is obviouly necessary when examing what occurred on the Thresher that morning, but reading his explanations of submarine systems, I find it hard to believe Polmar has any engineering background at all.

When talking about life and work aboard submarines, Polmar is at his weakest. His vignettes ring false and his understanding of the motivations, inner thoughts and daily life of submarine sailors is speculative and uninformed. Many left me rolling my eyes and physically uncomfortable they were so bad (nearly as much as the movie Crimson Tide.)

The loss of the Thresher was a major event by any measure (one felt well into the 1980s when I served as a Reactor Operator on an SSN.) It had a major impact on submarine construction, training and operations (similar to the impact Three Mile Island had on the way the commercial nuclear industry trained and operated.) Far from dying in vain, Thresher's crew made future submarines safer. The event also touched the national psyche so deeply at the time that Phil Ochs wrote a song about it ("The Thresher" on "All the News That's Fit to Sing"-1964.) The sense of loss expressed by the public was similar to that felt later upon the loss of Apollo 1 or shuttles Challenger or Columbia. Sadly Polmar fails to conveys a sense of a historic, defining event unfolding.

Perhaps it is impossible to construct a satisfying narrative with the information we know about Thresher, but there is no excuse for the poor quality of this one. This weakly constructed story is best avoided.

The life and death of a U. S. nuclear submarine........2003-04-05

Unlike the previous reviewer, I found this book a good read for those interested in submarine life. There were some typos in the book, but the reader could figure out what Polmar is trying to say. This book was originally written in the sixties, and was brought up to date with other submarine accidents. What is covered is one of the most tragic U.S. Navy accidents. Polmar covers the short life of this nuclear submarine, and why she may have went down.
By now, most people have heard about the Russian submarine Kursk and her fate. The U.S. Navy suffered a similar tragedy in 1963 with the loss of 129 men and the U.S.S. Thresher. What is interesting is the way Admiral Rickover (Jimmy Carter's mentor) is pictured in this book. It seems Rickover tried to cover up for any failure of the nuclear powerplant in the Thresher. Polmar does an alright job in making the technical data interesting.

accurate and interesting.......2003-04-05

I served on a submarine in the Thresher class (renamed Permit class after the Thresher was lost). We had mandatory annual training on the causes of the Thresher accident and what we learned from it. I was surprised to find that Polmar was aware of a very large number of accurate facts about this accident, including much of what I had thought was classified. There are, as another reviewer notes, some minor errors, but they are unimportant to the overall story. I found this book to be very well-written and well-researched. Reading it took me back to my "Thresher training" and reminded me of all the drills and actual problems on my own boat. I recommend this book highly.

Makes Me Nervous..........2002-09-02

when reading non-fiction to find both sloppy errors (p. 152 has Wilhelm Bauer working on a submarine in 1851 and building another in 1955) and questionable scholarship (a check of the Swedish submarine website re: Bauer). Can we trust the information in the rest of the book especially since there are no footnotes much less references?
