A must have for anyone who studies, collects or bulds Chinese furniture. The introduction covers the history and evolution of tables, chairs, wardrobes, cupboards, chests and beds. The remainder of the book shows black and white photos of traditional style furniture, with descriptions and dimensions of each piece.

This is the 1962 Dover-reprint of the work first published by Harper & Br. (1948). Essentially a catalogue of Chinese furniture photographed in Peking in 1937-1938. Starting off with an introduction of some 60 pages, George N.Kates presents 112 pieces of furniture, each by a black&white photograph and a short description. If nothing else this book shows that the Chinese certainly made beautiful and interesting furniture.

                    Estelle Jussim is one of the most highly regarded and influential voices in photography and other media. Award-winning author of Slave to Beauty and the pioneering Visual Communication and the Graphic Arts, Jussim has charted new ground in the investigation of the meaning of images. This volume is the first compilation of her work.

                    Estelle Jussim writes, unconventionally, on the social impact of photography, refusing to subscribe to any narrow critical ideology. An art historian and a communications theorist, she incorporates postmodern, deconstructionist, and feminist viewpoints in her assessments of various photographers, movements, and institutions. Wide-ranging in interest, Jussim's writing is remarkably bold and controversial.

                    Divided into three sections-- "Visual Communication," "Genres," and "Bio-History"-- The Eternal Moment includes essays that assess how aspects of the medium such as early wood-engraving or the role of the museum affect communication in a visual culture; survey various photographic subjects such as the nude, the landscape, and the ethnocentric icon; and reveal the work of some of the greatest practitioners of the medium.

                    In "Visual Communication" Jussim explores the interplay between technology and aesthetics in photography, and probes the unique, powerful relationship of photographs to time. The essay "Quintessences: Edward Weston's Search for Meaning," examines the discrepancies between that artist's pronouncements and his photographs.

                    Included in "Genres" is "Propaganda and Persuasion," in which Jussim offers astute observations on how meaning is produced, transmitted, and interpreted . In "Looking at Literati" she focuses on Jill Krementz's ability to capture the spark of personality in her portraits of writers. "Starr Ockenga's Nudes" is an insightful analysis of the ways in which that photographer's work has personalized the traditionally formal, impersonal genre of the nude.

                    In "Bio-History" Jussim's explorations of the lives of such important photographers as Barbara Crane, Carl Chiarenza, and F. Holland Day are models of their kind; her long essay on Jerome Liebling reveals a deep empathy for his essential mysticism and humanism.

                          Filled with tips for old hands as well as for those who are new

                          to e-mail, this book is sure to help everyone write better

                          business messages on the job. Part 1 is specifically about how to

                          use e-mail at work. Part 2 is a useful guide to the nitty-gritty

                          of business writing for e-mail and on hard copy - how to get the

                          words and punctuation right so that you sound and look

                          professional.

                          The book is a great resource. I keep it on the shelf above my
                          computer so I can refer to it often. It's full of helpful
                          examples that show the wrong way and the right way to use words.
                          The complete index makes it easy to find things. You won't have
                          to wonder about whether to use lie or lay, which or that, fewer
                          or less, I or myself. You won't have to wonder about how to
                          address a new client or whether to send an urgent message. The
                          answers are all there in this one handy book.

                          This book may be useful for the e-mail newcomers or for native English speakers who are not very skilled in the formal writing.

                          The book consists of two parts: "How to make e-mail work for you" and "How to write for business". The first part covers basic usage of e-mail, and can be helpful for e-mail newbies. However, if you've sent ten thousand messages so far, it is unlikely that you find anything useful there.

                          The author has dedicated the second chapter of the book to business writing. It is mostly a set of dos and don'ts, without deeper analysis. I recommend separate, deep books on business writing and correct use of English. The author, has also given a list of references that include "The American Heritage Book of English Usage" by Editors of The American Heritage Dictionaries, "The American heritage Dictionary of the English Language" by Editors of The American Heritage Dictionaries, "Alphabet to Email" by Naomi S. Baron, "Email in the Workplace" by Cristina Cavanagh, "The Chicago Manual of Style" by John Grossman, "Grammar for Grownups" by Val Dumond, "Cliffsquickreview Writing" by Jean Eggenschwiller and "E-What?" by Editors of EEI Press.

                                      Is Japan re-emerging as a normal, or even a great, military power in regional and global security affairs? This Adelphi Paper assesses the overall trajectory of Japans security policy over the last decade, and the impact of a changing Japanese military posture on the stability of East Asia. br br The paper examines Japans evolving security debate, set against the background of a shifting international environment and domestic policymaking system; the status of Japans national military capabilities and constitutional prohibitions; post-Cold War developments in the US Japan alliance; and Japans role in multilateral regional security dialogue, UN PKO, and US-led coalitions of the willing. It concludes that Japan is undoubtedly moving along the trajectory of becoming a more assertive military power, and that this trend has been accelerated post-9/11. Japan is unlikely, though, to channel its military power through greatly different frameworks than at present. Japan will opt for the enhanced, and probably inextricable, integration of its military capabilities into the US Japan alliance, rather than pursuing options for greater autonomy or multilateralism. Japans strengthened role as the defensive shield for the offensive sword of US power projection will only serve to bolster US military hegemony in East Asia and globally.

                                      I'm one of the novice readers on modern Japanese security affairs for whom the prior reviewer said this book was very good, and I can vouch for his judgment. "Japan's Re-emergence" does a wonderful job in outlining Japan's past and current security policy, with some careful projections of its probable future course. The author writes with careful objectivity and great clarity, and is very adroit at breaking down the widely divergent implications of what to the non-expert are almost indistinguishable terms, such as "required defence force" and "standard defence force" for instance. The book is peppered with acronyms throughout, but a handy glossary in the front of the book makes the alphabet soup navigable. The exposition is clear and helpful without dumbing down the material, balanced and level-headed without being bland. And far from becoming dated as of late 2006, the book provides some much-needed context on recent developments in Japan such as the upgrading of the Japan Defense Agency to a full-fledged ministry, Abe Shinzo's rise to prime ministership, and the continuing tensions with North Korea. Whether you are looking for a good, readable introduction into this complicated subject or just trying to get some background knowledge on the headlines, this small, concise book will serve your purposes admirably.

                                      Hughes provides us with an important and timely paper on modern Japanese security policy. What Hughes does in this paper, is to outline the development and changes of Japan's post-WWII defence policy, and the reasons as to why, in his opinion, these shifts have occurred. The paper is quite up to date, taking into account events just prior to the announcement of the new National Defence Program Guidelines (Dec 2004).

                                      I agree with Hughes on many of the points he makes regarding the meaning of Japan's "re-emergence", the catalysts being a relatively new domestic political acceptance (by elites and others) of defence issues and a new international politico-military environment. I also agree with Hughes when he states that Japan has chosen to tighten the alliance with the United States significantly, as opposed to pursuing a more independent path. Indeed, it can be said that Hughes's interpretations of shifts in Japan's defence policy are moderate, fair and accurate.

                                      If you are looking for a general (but comprehensive) overview of Japan's defence policy then this is the paper for you. But if you are after something more "meaty" that goes into the finer details and particularly the politics behind the changes that have taken place then you must look elsewhere to supplement this paper.

                                      All in all a very good paper, which I'm sure many students of Japanese politics and international security will find useful.
