    Book Description

Spatial and environmental planning is an essential feature of all but the very simplest of societies. Its form and role and the principles on which it should be based, however, have become increasingly controversial questions. In this important book Patsy Healey draws on a wide range of new thinking in social, political and spatial theory to provide a framework for planning which is rooted in the institutional realities of our increasingly fragmented societies but designed to foster communication and collaborative action. The second edition includes a major new chapter assessing recent developments in theory and practice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for communicative planning.......2001-04-29

Healey's challenge is to create understandings of the social construction of meaning and the social embeddedness of ways of acting and thinking to be tied with understandings of the wider forces affecting urban regions and governance.

Collaborative Planning, while still purporting to address the failings of Modern planning, seeks to address the difficulties of undertaking collective action in a world where fact and value cannot be separated, by using an institutional approach which pays heed to the cultural embeddedness of individuals, and the social construction of meaning. Through policy discourse, the institutional capacity of a place can be 'built up'. Planning then, has the potential to shape the building of relations and discourse. An institutional approach would not measure success via assessment of outcomes against goals, but would also look at the institutional capacity generated by the process. All stakeholders are part of the dialogue.

Collaborative Planning sees 'the problem' as essentially being: the changing dynamics of the way we live, global economics, bringing the views of all stakeholders together in a way that recognises power structures, and the role that planning might play in resolving these.

Overall, the book is an excellent starting point for the critical exploration of communicative planning and the governance of urban regions. The book successfully synthesizes practical understandings of urban dynamics with a critique informed by a sound philosophical and political basis. I strongly recommend it, especially to the student and practitioner of urban planning and related fields.

The same old cycle, over and over again

Two friends find themselves amidst situations that are not only bad for them, but are also endless cycles of self-deprivation. Daryl-
Lynn Davis, known as Darlin to her family and friends, is intelligent, street-savvy, and an entrepreneur. She has her own business and knows how to handle herself in the myriad of situations that cross her path. Nakaiya "Kai" Smith is a bit younger, yet with
her own set of attributes that make her stand out in the crowd.

Kai is from Indiana and accustomed to being surrounded by her loving family. She's been sheltered much of her life, but after her aunt's death, she takes flight and heads to Chicago to study art. Kai moves into Darlin's building and Darlin immediately takes her under her wings, schooling her on the ways of life in the big city.

The two women start a friendship and pop into each other's lives occasionally, but during the other times, they are each dealing with
their relationships with men. Darlin is in love with her boyfriend of quite a few years and has invested her complete being into her
relationship. She's gone so far as to center her world around him and help him in all his endeavors because she sees the potential he has to do great things in his life. When she's sure they're getting ready to commit to one another for life, he announces that he's
involved with someone else and is no longer interested in the relationship with Darlin. He then goes on to marry the other women.
She completely shuts down, has a mental breakdown and through the help of a friend, finally brings herself out of the prison she's
locked herself into. And, just when things are looking better for her...the ex pops back into her life claiming his mistake and love
for her, but get this: he's not willing to leave his wife (nor the child on the way). Surprisingly, Darlin falls for his claims of love and
resorts to having any little piece of him she can have to keep him in her life.

Kai on the other hand has other issues. She has never been in a real relationship, so when she meets someone who catches her interest, she falls quickly, gives up the goods and puts up with things from the beginning that many naive women have fallen for. However, when things get rocky, she immediately hops in bed with the next guy and once her conscience kicks in, she goes back to her boyfriend, positive that she can work things out. This cycle continues over and over throughout the book and both women suffer not only heartache, but also the inability to break the cycle and move on...or do they? Once you've grown accustomed to doing something the same way repetitively, can you indeed break the cycle? Can you look in the mirror and really like who you see?

I tried to understand these characters and their actions, but in all honestly, I was sickened and in total disbelief over their antics to
keep their "men." The abundance of Kai's hopping from bed to bed (without even the hint of protection), to Darlin's motto of knowing it all, yet she seemed pretty inexperienced when all the cards were laid on the table. I had no connection whatsoever with these characters. Perhaps if more time had been spent toward developing them a bit more, as well as beefing up the dialogue (which seemed repetitive from man to man), I possibly could've enjoyed the book a bit more. There were also a few grammatical errors throughout the book.

In spite of my disappointment, I could appreciate the theme of friends sticking beside each other through the rough times. Also, as the title implies, the grass really isn't always greener on the other side. Instead, it all depends on where you're standing and what you're willing to do for your version of happiness. In the case of our two main characters, they really needed to spend some time working on themselves and understanding their self-worth versus relying on a man to complete them or validate their existence. Either that or get some fertilizer or something for their own grass.

                Book Description

The remarkable thing about the Malaysian economy is not how far it has come but how well it has recovered from the Asian financial crisis of 1997. Tough times now beckon with a slowdown in the Western economies, where the chill winds of global downturn are beginning to nip at the ankles. Malaysia has been acknowledged as the richest and best managed Islamic democracy in the World. The question, however, is whether Malaysia can sustain this outstanding record of socio-economic development, with its enviable political stability and its unique brand of social engineering that has strengthened racial harmony in one of the most complex societies in the world. Will Malaysia be able to seize the opportunities that well managed globalization can provide or will it be "gobble-ised" and dominated by the economic might of the Western industrial powers and the powerful multinationals in the painful process of economic liberalization.

Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has undoubtedly led Malaysia impressively into the 21st Century. With him at the helm steering the nation forward, Malaysia is today a modern nation and is moving steadily towards industrialized-nation status by the year 2020. Dr. Mahathir with his deep convictions and firm charismatic leadership, he won many economic and political battles in his twenty remarkable years as Prime Minister of Malaysia. Besides providing an overview of the Malaysian economy and what makes it tick, this book looks at the continuing concerns as to whether Malaysia can overcome the many new challenges that it will confront with the rising tide of globalization.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good overall reference material.......2007-02-03

This book is similar to others on the topic so if you have one book on writing proposals then some of the information will be redundant but a good book to have in your reference library.

Overall an easy read and places the process in a logical progression.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-12-09

I had no idea how to write a business proposal. I followed this book to the tee...I now write major proposals for my company and my proposal kicked the ass of a couple of MBA's. There were a lot of red faces when I showed up my with version of a proposal. I essentially went from having no idea how to write a proposal to setting the bar on how to write a proposal, thanks to this excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Like Eating Your Vegatables..........2003-07-23

This book is really good for you... just like eating your vegatables. Unfortunately, its not easily digested. This book provides a great method of preparing strategic proposals. The method is largely based on the Mento "Pyramid Principle" a book which is itself not an easy read (however, it is required reading at McKinsey, BCG, and other major strategy consulting firms. This fact should tell you instantly just how powerful a concept it is). However, if you're willing to hold your nose and chew slowly (I'm not willing to give up on the "eat your vegatables" analogy just yet), you and your proposals will be much more competitive. Since the book is far from an easy read, I'd suggest that you tackle it chapter-by-chapter with some time for rest and contemplation in between (divide it into "bite-sized" pieces, in other words). If you're looking for fast-food proposal fair, I'd like to suggest Robert Kantin's "Proposal Kit For Dummies" which, despite the title, is a terrific book on proposal writing for professionals -- particularly consultants. Overall grade: A-/B+.

5 out of 5 stars An Author Responds.......2003-05-23

Since my book is mentioned in a couple of these reviews, I thought I would respond.

I used Rich Freed's book for years in my consulting practice and MBA classes. It's a great book, and I *highly* recommend it. It's clearly one of the best treatments on writing business proposals available.

But comparing my book on proposals to Freed's is like comparing apples and oranges. My book is aimed at people who work in scientific and technical disciplines. Freed's book is written toward business applications. These two books are designed to work in two completely different arenas.

Buy this book. As an experienced proposal writer and consultant, I believe it's the best book on writing business proposals. It's truly innovative, and it offers wonderful strategies for winning contracts in highly competitive business environments.

                5 out of 5 stars The 2nd Edition Rocks.......2003-05-10

The first edition of this books is, as the former editor of Consultants' News remarks, "The most comprehensive treatment we've seen," and the second edition is even better, including (for example) important discussions on fees and collaboration. Most important, this book is about far more than writing business proposals. David Maister-like in spirit, it's a superior treatment about how to sell professional services. Although it addresses business proposals, most of the content is important for writing other proposals as well, but like most successful books on proposal writing, it focuses on one of the sub-genres, unlike more general treatments (Johnson-Sheehan's comes to mind) that in their attempts to focus on all proposals, do a poor job of treating specific kinds.

2 out of 5 stars I Find Little to Disagree with in every one of the Reader Reviews of This Book.......2006-02-03

It seems that here a few readers have aptly beaten me to the punch; in every review so many words seem taken right out of my mouth. E.g. JW puts it best when he points out that Hitler's Last Gamble is the literal byproduct of a staggeringly detailed Army study of the Battle of the Bulge, and it shows; ultimately, the work much more accurately characterized as far more a compilation of numbers to be crunched and minute data to be logged than a work of history. Indeed, on practically every page the reader is confronted by acronyms, times, and unit designations etc. For example, to paraphrase one sentence: 'At 16:23 hrs. the 501st artillery regiment of the 28th Infantry Division attached to CCB of the 2nd Brigade of Smiths XXI...' Well, here I may exaggerate, but if so, only barely. Too bad, for the late Col. Dupuy was a brave man and a tireless researcher, who produced a staggering amount of work over his lifetime after retiring from a distinguished career as an Army officer. But Hitler's Last Gamble is more of an archive than a work of history.

4 out of 5 stars Recognizes the Polish Success in Cracking the German Code.......2003-09-17

Although this book is about the Battle of the Bulge, it also presents other war-related factual information that few readers are likely to know about. Specifically, (pp. 372-373) it calls attention to the fact that it was Polish mathematicians who cracked the German "Enigma" code. Dupuy also correctly points out that no other Allied nation had come close to cracking it.

2 out of 5 stars It takes a labor of love to finish reading this book........2001-12-28

I love to read nearly anything and everything I can find about WW2 history. This was one of those rare instances, however, where I picked up a book, read about half of it, then put it back down never to finish it. I just couldn't force myself to read any more.

Although the Battle of the Bulge is without a doubt one of the more interesting episodes of the war, and Dupuy provides a detailed account, in my opinion he's just a little too detailed. This book is written for someone who has a little more serious interest in mind than just an amateur historian such as myself. It is dry and choppy in its presentation. The thing that I found most distracting was the frequent digressions into mini-biographies every time a new general or other major figure was introduced to the narrative.

For example, a division commander is mentioned for the first time, and immediately the author cuts to a two page synopsis of the man's life and military career. He then abruptly shifts back to the main narrative after having led the reader on a merry rabbit chase. And he does this over and over and over again. Very hard to read unless you're a person who likes that sort of thing. I'm not one of those, and would not recommend this to anyone who is not a bit more serious student of WW2.

4 out of 5 stars Interested in the Bulge? Read this book later..but read it........2001-02-11

Research is the strength of this work, not the telling of a major battle. It is difficult for the reader to grasp the overall view of this clash as it is layered over with detail upon detail. From mass movements to small skirmishes, it is told in the driest of writing style. The usual complaint levied against military books, inadequate maps, can not be claimed here. The maps are numerous and like the work itself, detailed. As a reference tool the book is invaluable and for this it merits the rating given. An interesting read it is not but it does belongs on the shelf of those with a serious interest in the Bulge.

3 out of 5 stars You either LOVE or HATE this book........1999-04-21

This is a tricky book. The author(s)apparently know what they are talking about with regard to the battle of the bulge. However, it is written in a pretty dry and boring manner, almost, like another reviewer stated, seeming to be written as a college paper that is trying to get "all the facts" in. The detail is terrific, and probably important, for the military historian reader interested in what battalion was where, or what company commander did what, or which army advanced here or there, or withdrew so many miles, etc. But, for the general reader it is kind of boring, although I thought the asides on the lives of the military officers were somewhat interesting. Overall, not light reading, very little of that imagery and word magic necessary to keep your eyeballs glued to the page.

                                  Book Description

How does New Labour compare with old Labour? What can we learn about the current Government by looking at its predecessor? How does New Labour interpret the record of old Labour in power?

We are constantly told that New Labour forms an historic departure from the traditions of the Labour Party. This book, written by a distinguished selection of academics and commentators, provides the most detailed comparison yet of old and new Labour in power. It is also the first to offer a comprehensive analysis of the last Labour Government before the rise of Thatcher and the re-emergence of the Labour Party under Tony Blair's leadership. It reveals much about the history of the Labour Party as well as providing a much-needed context from which to judge the current government.

Contributors include: Vernon Bogdanor, Raymond Plant, Jim Tomlinson, Robert Taylor, Polly Toynbee, David Walker, Roy Lowe, John W Young, Ann Lane, Chris Ballinger, Philip Norton, Kevin Theakston, Ed Gouge, Dilys M Hill, Brendan O'Leary, Eric Shaw, Steven Fielding, Stuart Holland, Kenneth O Morgan, Peter Riddell, Robert Skidelsky and Dennis Kavanagh. They compare all the key aspects of the political thought and policy of the Wilson-Callaghan Government of 1979 with the Blair Government making this book essential reading for all of those interested in how Labour, both past and present, governs.

This lovely book maeasures up to every standard one can reasonably expect. The artwork is skilled and enjoyable. The story has kindness, altruism, moral dilemma and resolution, reward, and a big touch of magic. There's a pleasant realism about story, too. It shows a number of details of Japanese life, in passing, to give a storybook kid views of a life [s]he might never have seen in person. And, although the words "happily ever after" never actually appear, the last page shows the young couple deep in their old age. The book, as a whole, meets every objective standard of what I like to see in a children's book.

For me, though, this book goes way beyond reasonable standards, well into the things I favor in a very personal and subjective way. I take immense pleasure ukiyo-e prints, the classical Japanese woodcut style that these modern artists imitate. I first saw the picture of the sleeping couple as a greeting card, and found it affectionate and romantic, with a tiny chaste hint of very grown-up love - that image led me to hunt this book down. The one-eyed samurai has meaning in my family, too. And the "madarin ducks" of the title, traditional symbols of fidelity, have a strong and affectionate significance for me for utterly personal reasons.

So I recommend this book to anyone with a read-to-me kid. It's very easy for anyone to like. For me, though, a striking set of coincidences make this a truly memorable work.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read Aloud!.......2006-05-18

This book is great to read to kids! It has suspense and it also shows kids how doing the right thing can seem bad, but soon you'll get something back. I liked the moral of the story and I like the way they illustarted it to look just like ancient Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Love Takes Wing.......2005-11-07

This beautifully illustrated book and equally beautiful story is very moving. It is set in old Japan and is a look at Japanese history and culture.

It is the story of love; of being willing to take chances to protect another and about kindness rewarding many times over. It speaks to the ripple effect of how one single act of kindness, in this case freeing an imprisoned drake will be rewarded lovingly.

5 out of 5 stars What a great kids book!.......2005-07-19

I bought this for my nephew a few years back, and I looked through it before wrapping it. The story is interesting yet simple, and the illustrations are beautiful. It also provides a nice little glimpse into another culture, which is nice for homeschooling families. I can't wait until my son is old enough to read this with him!

5 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks.......2000-03-18

My granddaughter (11) and I have enjoyed this book emmensely and are re-reading it often. She loves tales of Japan and the beautiful illustrations. My husband and I lived in Japan for 2 years. This book's story has good moral principles and is an easy way to teach kind thoughtful behavior and the benefits of love and responsibility.

                                  Book Description

This is a story of conservation told through the natural histories of two of the world's most fascinating birds, the Wood Duck of North America and the Mandarin of Asia. The only two species in their genus (Aix), these Northern Wood Ducks are native to different continents but have long been kept together in captivity. Now, for the first time in history, they are also flying side by side in the wild in a small area of northern California. This rare circumstance has given Lawton L. Shurtleff and Christopher Savage the opportunity to observe the Northern Wood Ducks' close relationship and is the starting point of this informative and beautifully rendered book.
The opening chapters tell how the Wood Duck and the Mandarin came to inhabit the Pacific Flyway and explain their extraordinary similarities. Subsequent chapters discuss the distinctive histories of the two species and describe the birds throughout the seasons in their native flyways. The Mandarins' place in Asian art and literature is the subject of Chapter Five. The final chapter illuminates the successful work done to protect the North American Wood Duck, which has made a remarkable recovery from near extinction, and the beginning efforts to protect the Mandarin, whose existence in East Asia is seriously threatened.
Stunning full-color photographs by renowned wildlife photographers, along with photographs by the authors, capture the exquisite beauty of these much revered birds. Detailed maps show the Wood Ducks' territory in North America and the Mandarins' territory in East Asia and Great Britain. Three appendices--plans for building nestboxes, instructions for banding birds, and lists of books and conservation organizations--and a thorough index are valuable resources in a book that will delight bird-lovers and general readers alike.

5 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks.......2006-06-10

Ironic that this book followed The Value of Honesty (ISBN 0916392368) in the pile - they go well together, both culturally and in the teaching-morals way.

A pair of ducks lived near a pond on land in the district of a cruel lord, who liked to surround himself with beautiful things, and disliked all things not beautiful. Among the things he'd come to dislike was Shozo, who had once been the lord's mightiest samurai. Shozo lost an eye in battle and was not handsome, but he was a compassionate man. When the lord saw the drake, the more attractively colored duck, he decided to take him home as a pet. In captivity, the duck withered and became ugly, missing his mate, so a maid set him free. The lord blamed Shozo, and punished him, but Shozo did not mind so much - he had fallen in love with the maid. Eventually ordered put to death, the pair are saved by mysterious Imperial messengers and live in peace, knowing that a burden is lighter when it is shared.

A superb book for kids, who will enjoy the story while learning about compassion and caring. The back of the book says ages 5-9; that's fairly accurate, but a lot of 5 year olds will need a bit of help to understand it. By the time the reader is 9, the few big words won't seem so intimidating.
