Book Description
In a volume of impressive detail and opulent photography the British landscape architect and art historian Penelope Hill has portrayed the developments in contemporary European garden art. Presenting hundreds of gardens - some well-known, others unknown - from the whole of Europe, she succeeds in demonstrating the rich inventiveness, the originality, and the provocative force of a form of art which has attracted renewed interest in recent years. Hill shows how in the field of garden design, the use of new materials, the influence of ecology and art as well as town planning have brought about a break with tradition, and how new goals are emerging.

Just when you thought there couldn't be another coffee table book of recent designer gardens Penelope Hill, a Harvard alumni, pushes the others aside and bangs this one on the table. Large, lavishly illustrated, well written and comprehensive, the `Contemporary History of Garden Design' hopes to be definitive; the magnum opus of creativity in garden design that occurred in Europe at the close of the 20th century. Practitioners and students will make great use of this collection in not only understanding what is arguably a renaissance of the garden, but also in approaching their own designs and offering examples to clients.
Beginning with an essay that locates late 20th century experimental garden design within a glossed history of landscape architecture, Hill then organises the work in to categories - categories that were always going to struggle to hold true. They are; New Designs on Classic Themes, Architecture and the Landscape, The Vertical Garden, Leaping the Fence, The Planting Revolution, Art and the Garden, The Contemporary Garden as Art and finally, the most disappointing of all, Forums for the Future, where she can only conclude that Garden Shows are good test beds. Within each of these main chapters are sub-categories that go further toward defining the main typologies of contemporary landscape (garden) design.
Thus the book tries to categorise and historicise an unwieldy plethora of work which is, as the title suggests, neither art nor architecture but something in between. To be "in between" was a trendy but not unimportant theoretical position in the 1990's. Landscape architecture is by definition made up of--or, if you like-- in between many things and while Hill has done a remarkable job in terms of researching, categorising and interpreting so much work, her analysis of exactly where in-between is remains cursory. To properly (academically) establish the nature of being inbetween, one would need to turn to the polarities, in this case art and architecture, alas, little is said of either.
But if an academic can find her theory lacking such criticism must be countered by an appreciation of the remarkable fact that nowhere in her book does she dumb projects down, as is so often the case with coffee table heavy weights. So, even if you think you have seen all most of the projects in this book many times before (and most will have) remember that her descriptions and interpretations make this arguably the most intelligent survey of late 20th century garden design yet produced for a general readership. Every project is explained with a genuine understanding and appreciation of the designer's aims and strategies. This is a rich account of a great range of projects.
Even though the book is not written for them, academics, as they are wont to do, would also complain that the book lacks what they would call, "a critical curatorial agenda". Ultimately her position is simply that all the work she has collected is good because it's essentially innovative, though in fact, this is a harder won accolade than much of the work suggests. Whereas Hill rightly enthuses over the vibrancy of formal experimentation in recent work, she never really questions the work, nor the society that creates and consumes it. Where she is dazzled by the fireworks others might see shrapnel.
The book Penelope Hill has written wants to be historically definitive and therefore more than a catalogue, but her approach lacks the discrimination necessary to the task. Instead of what is a timid and overly general introduction she should have more studiously set out the criteria upon which she has made her selections-- and for that matter--her omissions. This then is not the last word on late 20th century European garden design, and we await a book that lifts the vagaries of being "inbetween" and calls bad art by its name, a book that upholds fewer projects for the mantle of historical significance.
This book is nonetheless a major, if not now the major celebration of a period of immense creativity in European landscape design. Indeed, if John Beardsley's Earthwork's and Beyond began a popular interest in environmental art for landscape architects, Hill's book maps its end point, that is, its manifestation in garden design - the place Smithson probably dreaded it would all end up. Garden design is of course not landscape architecture's whole story and it's a pity she hasn't put her mind to a broader range of the work we do.
By announcing what is, books also announce what is about to pass and the conclusion she has not written is that after the creatively cathartic period of the end of the 20th century, we can now move to a period of less image and greater substance. For, like the image on the cover, this whole book makes one wonder whether much of what landscape architects have done after the seminal works of environmental art is really profound or simply empty.
But these are academic problems, not the book's. There can be no question that within the pulp fiction world of garden design publications and generalist histories of landscape architecture, Hill has produced an excellent survey, one that could well be used to push all the others off the table.

We may be slightly over enthusiastic about Rules of Thumb but this could be as enduring as Cutup & Center's Effective Public Relations book that is now in its unbelievable eighth edition.
But unlike Cutup & Center, the three authors cut a much wider swath across one of the most widely covered used and abused business tools...clear, concise and effective business writing. Perhaps it is too much to hope for but the ready availability and ease of use of email has only accelerated the use and acceptance of poorly constructed sentences, stilted and acronym laden correspondence, embarrassing grammatical errors and a toleration of poor spelling and punctuation.
Rules of Thumb isn't a textbook that should be read for classwork and then put in your professional library to gather dust. This is a workbook. One that you should read a couple of times and put into practice. It should be a part of your mentoring and staff training program to help ensure that PR people properly use a vital tool in their daily practice...writing. The discipline and guidelines the authors provide will also spill over into your verbal communications activities.
The book will probably never become a standard for use in business classes or a basic requirement in MBA programs and that's a pity because there is a decreasing number of assistants whose job it is to clean up and improve business correspondence for managers and executives.
Most of us today have our own computer(s), a low-cost printer sitting on the credenza and Internet access. As a result it is too easy for us to write our own letters, our own business proposals, our own management reports, our own editorial and management emails and even prepare our own PowerPoint presentations. All without the use of standard software tools like spell and grammar checkers.
Rules of Thumb is an educational, reminder and reference tool that seems to have been written just to help people avoid embarrassing grammar, punctuation, style and spelling mistakes. "Facts" will probably get in the way of every public relations practitioner and his or her boss picking up, reading and using the book - "I know how to speak and write good so I don't need a fundamental book on business writing!"
But the brutally honest fact is that we all need to work at writing more effective letters, emails, proposals, newsletters, resumes, articles and yes even news releases. The authors also give a wide range of work-saving shortcuts you can put to work immediately on using Word, PowerPoint and even writing for websites and blogs.
The authors have compiled an excellent set of bulleted lists of easy-to-read and remember guidelines. They have painstakingly developed hundreds of practical guidelines that make it easy for you to clearly understand the concepts they present.
Now in its second edition, the authors provide a large volume of insightful information and guidelines to help you improve the quality of your written work as well as how to write your correspondence more quickly and with better results. As if all of this isn't enough, the authors have also done a lot of research for you and included a valuable resource directory to enable you to more quickly and effectively find the information you want and need on the web.
Nothing in Rules of Thumb will make you suddenly say "Viola!!!" It won't be an epiphany to open the floodgate of your creative writing. But it will be a book you'll want to read a few times and revisit as a refresher course again and again.
If nothing else think of it as a working guide to help you find a bigger, better and higher paying job somewhere else...or get the promotion you've been angling for.
That should motivate you to take a serious look at Rules of Thumb....

Great reference book.......2000-01-15
Rules for Bus. Writers is an excellent quick reference to keep handy at your desk. Plenty of material for beginners as well as advanced writers. I liked the quick tips and good resources. I'd rate it "concise and helpful plus very easy to use" - it's a short and to the point guide. You don't have to wade through long passages of chitchat and padding to get the help you need. Highly recommend it!

Not the APA guide I thought it was.......2003-02-11
This book is not quite what it is portrayed to be. And the CD-ROM is so general in nature that it really is not that helpful. If you need information on APA-style then by the official APA guidebook.
Comprehensive and quick reference in one easy to use package.......1999-07-19
This book provides a complete, easy to understand description of all aspects of grammatically correct writing. But what makes this book truly exceptional is the integral quick reference guides in every chapter that allow you to make a quick check when you are in the midst of your writing project. I have not found any other book that works this well for me; I have used it in place of the corresponding required text for my college English classes.
Quick and easy to use........1999-01-23
In my line of work, I often find myself in the position of writing for others as well as myself: letters, paragraphs and sometimes longer pieces. Rules of Thumb is exactly what I need as someone who loves grammar, but has been out of school for 15+ years and needs a quick...you guessed it..."rule of thumb" on a particular topic. I highly recommend it for the workplace. The pages are laid out in such a way that merely thumbing through the book allows your eye to land on the topic you're looking for. When all you need is a quick reminder, or even consise 'how, why, when and where' examples -- this is the book to choose!
The guidance that I needed was gained from this book........1999-01-13
This book contains information that can be reached in moments and is most time-saving. Had I been exposed to this while in school, I'm sure my writing would have been on a much higher level. Orchids to Jay, Elaine and Diana.
Grammar and style rules in an easy-to-use format........1998-11-14
I am a college English teacher and I use this as a required text for a course about writing a reasearch paper. I like it because it combines the rules of MLA style with some very practical grammar rules and also includes guidelines for library research.

Book Description
This book examines the role that women workers play in drawing companies from central cities to suburban locations. Movement of jobs from cities to suburbs has meant a substantial loss of jobs for central-city residents, decreased tax revenues for central city services, a population shift from the central city to the suburbs as people follow jobs, and increased demands for highways and other infrastructure.
Some studies have argued that firms are increasingly drawn to the suburbs to tap a supply of white, second-earner women with good basic skills. This book is the first to use both a statistical model of intra-metropolitan firm location and a survey of firms to establish the importance of female labor to firms' decisions to choose suburban sites. The study finds that the availability of such workers does influence firms to choose the suburbs.
