Country Wild (David Larkin's Country Series , Vol 3)
ASIN: 0395771889 |
Book Description
Here is the successor to COUNTRY WISDOM, the first in David Larkin's series of handsomely illustrated and informative books about country ways and country life. COUNTRY ACRES takes the reader from the country house to its outbuildings - barns, sheds, cribs - and on to its gardens, fields, trees, and ponds. In his charming fashion, Larkin offers information and guidance for country-lovers of all levels of sophistication, explaining how fields get their size and shape; how best to use the tools of country work, from grub hoe to chainsaw; why you should (or shouldn't) grow potatoes; how to farm your trees and grow fish as a food source; and how best to pick and store your crops. All these and hundreds of other topics are covered in this artfully designed volume, with more than two hundred full-color photographs and drawings. Much more than a how-to book, COUNTRY ACRES is about the art of understanding the country.

Over-the-top Appreciation of Rural Scenery.......2000-05-12
This is a visually fabulous coffee-table book about livestock, barns, trees, fields, vegetables, and farming implements. It's sort of a photographic companion to "Charlotte's Web." Rural life has never looked so gorgeous as it does in this book. There are no people in this countryside, no grime, and certainly no dead cars or junk in yards or on sagging porches. (Caution to carnivores: Once you have studied the beautiful and soulful farm animals and their young, you will not want to eat meat again.) Barns, birch trees, fences, snow -- everything is perfect. This is a strange book, one that idealizes the Northeast countryside so powerfully that it's a little strange, really. Best enjoyed by city slickers.

Just as digital cameras revolutionized still photography, digital motion-picture devices are sure to have a big effect on the home and amateur video scenes. Making iMovies shows how you--the owner of a video camera, and with an interest in digital movie production--can make professional-quality video sequences on your personal computer. Author Scott Smith's editing platform of choice? The Apple iMac DV, or any other Macintosh computer with a FireWire interface for external devices. Smith presents a beautifully illustrated guide to the techniques of telling stories and eliciting emotions via digital video.
As you'd expect, Smith covers his bases in terms of explaining iMovie's essential capabilities. More valuably, he takes readers beyond the basics of connectivity and clip splicing. A typical example: While makers of traditional film-based movies can depict characters against a brick-wall background with no worries, bricks can cause jitter and compression problems in digitally recorded sequences. Therefore, Smith says, digital video producers need to zoom closer to subjects that are backed by a complicated surface. Not all of his advice is as explicitly technical. He also offers advice on orienting elements in the video frame, choosing subtle but effective music, selecting costumes, and storyboarding. He's written (and, no less importantly, helped lay out) a superb book that balances the technical and artistic sides of digital video production on the Macintosh. --David Wall
Topics covered: Digital video production, with emphasis on the tools and resources available on the iMac DV and other editing platforms based on Mac OS and FireWire. Using the iMovie application as his prime tool, the author explains story planning, visual design, time management, and other technical aspects of videography. Sound, lighting, music, costumes, and the like receive ample coverage, as do editing techniques, titling, transitions, and narration.
Book Description
This book shows you how to make movies using nothing more than a DV camcorder and an iMac computer. A primer on moviemaking for the Internet, this book demystifies the process by eliminating technical mumbo-jumbo and infusing the reader with a sense of confidence. By illustrating the features of Apple's iMovie software, the author guides the reader through the process of making short movies for delivery over the WWW; includes lesson files, video clips, sound effects, music scores, illustrations, and still photos to enhance the tutorial projects.

Not bad, but not the best........2001-12-17
(...) If you're interested in shooting and editing fictional stories using iMovie, Smith's book is very useful--even though it's outdated (it covers iMovie1, not 2). What I appreciated about the book is that Smith takes digital editing seriously. He explains, somewhat, the art of it, which is evident in both the book and the attached DVD.
This book, however, would be a waste of money for those seeking to shoot home, small business, or community outreach videos. If you're shooting and editing for these reasons, I highly recommend David Pogue's "iMovie 2," Rory O'Neill and Eden Muir's "Movie Making with iMovie," or Todd Stauffer's iMovie 2 for Dummies"--the latter includes a good CD Rom with Quicktime movie examples of the strategies and techniques explained in Stauffer's book. Stauffer also goes into advance video editing techniques not clearly explained in Neill or Smith's book.(...)
An innovative approach and a great book.......2001-12-03
All those 'how to edit video' books out there are great, but they all start out assuming you have video! Scott Smith takes you by the hand with a DVD full of pre-shot footage, so you can test out iMovie and use it to tell real stories, not just your cousin's wedding video. Unlike most books that tell you to buy lots of expensive equipment, he tells you how to create real mini-movies on a budget, complete with special effects, like recording bacon frying to get a 'sizzling in the sun' sound! This book is visually appealing and approachable. I learned a lot from it.
It's amazing that books like this get published.......2001-03-31
This is one of the worst 'how to' books that I have ever read. I bought it on the assumption that it would take me a little further than the David Pogue's "Missing Manual" (which is an excellent book). However, it most certainly does not, in fact it is badly written, full or errors, and actually has some genuinely dubious advice regarding technique. I have no idea why the people that gave this book a good review did so. I can only assume that they are friends of the author, and didn't actually read the book.
The Worst Book I've Seen In a Long Time.......2001-03-09
This book should not be on the market in its present error-filled state. Apparently the other reviewers who rate it so highly are looking at the book's pretty pictures. They surely have not tried to use the book as a new learner, as the book intends.
The book fails utterly as a tutorial. It has numerous factual errors, mismatches between book and actual experience, misleading language, etc. etc.
This book needs an overall edit in the worst way. At the very least someone should have gone through the tutorials (to make sure they worked!) before putting them into print.
The file for the very first lesson has a different name on the CD than the one given for it in the book, and does not start up with images already imported, as it should. And the web site they refer you to for enhanced coverage is a complete bust.
But that's just the start of your troubles if you're trying to use this book to learn iMovie. Go for David Pogue's Missing Manual. Infinitely superior, and half the price.
Excellent iMovie guide with a *great* DVD-ROM.......2000-05-10
I'm sure you've seen the Apple TV commercials: make digital home movies, including professional-standard fades, cuts and credits, on your iMac DV! Enticed by these dramatic TV commercials, I bought an iMac DV, but of course there was no iMovie instruction manual included. One of the only laments I have about Apple these days is the lack of documentation and instruction books included with their new computers (and their online help features are frequently confusing, anemic, and infuriating to use), but luckily a whole new range of books are being published to cope with this lack. This is one of the first iMovie instruction manuals published, and though I can't make any comparisons yet with the many that will likely follow, this is a great instruction and idea manual. This largish-format paperback (9 x 9 inches) takes you step-by-step through planning your iMovie, storyboarding, filming on your digital camera, editing, scoring, and adding sound and credits. Lots of color illustrations show you examples as well as screen-shot menus that make the process clear and easy-to-follow. There's an excellent general theory section on storytelling on film, many examples of how to make your shots more dramatic, how to get around the basic limitations of shooting digitally or showing your iMovies on a computer screen, troubleshooting, things to avoid, and much more. Among the great tips it offered that I didn't know and *needed* to know is how to convert Quicktime files into iMovie format. Most important, this book contains a DVD-ROM with all the files you need for three separate project exercises in editing, scoring, adding sound and credits. Most "exercises" provided with computer manuals are usually pretty lame, but *not* these...they're entertaining, well-shot short-short film segments (you put `em together into three films), with a tongue-in-cheek quality and twist endings that make them fun to work on, *not* laborious. So, in short, this a great introduction and beginner's manual to a user-friendly but very detailed Macintosh program in specific and novice filmmaking in general. While the page count (138 pages) may seem anemic for $39.95, the large amount of color and the DVD-ROM featuring imaginative projects to use as exercises and source material go a long way to making this a good buy. I'm eagerly awaiting a competing book: David Pogue's "iMovie: The Missing Manual" (ISBN 1565928598)--Pogue is one of the recognized experts on all things Mac and *always* entertaining to read--but *this* book is a great way to start out making your own iMovies. Narration by Jeff Goldblum not included.

Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing for a beginner.......2003-10-22
I'm a Crystal Reports beginner. This book is not useful at all. You can easily create a simple report by following the steps described in first two chapters. However, after that, I was totally lost. The book describes a lot of things available in Crystal Reports without following samples. There are samples available for each chapter on the web. However, there was no connection between the samples and the book. I don't how the sample reports were produced and I just couldn't learn how to create reports by just reading the book. I'm very disappointed at the book.
Disappointing for the Non-Beginner.......2003-04-16
Here are the good points:
. the examples do follow through many of the features of Crystal Reports 9
Here are the bad points:
. there is a lot of unnecessary verbiage which pads out the size of the book; the verbiage is intended to make the text friendly, but for someone trying to determine how a feature works, it is highly obstructive and irritating
. the typeface in which the book is set is quite difficult to read
. the examples do not pass on understanding of the principles of each feature; the attempt to grasp a general concept gets drowned in the details
. many features (too numerous to mention) are glossed-over, including advanced features needed by the enterprise programmer
. the index includes references which are totally useless (e.g. McLuhan, Marshall who has absolutely nothing to do with the topic) and lacks completely necessary references
. while not a "1,200 page tome" (see another review) it is a 639 page tome
While the title includes the word "Master", this book is really for the programming beginner. For example, veterans do not need another tedious review of object-oriented programming, or SQL, or Basic language syntax, and so on. Seeing as there are entire libraries on these topics, the reviews are necessarily inadequate anyhow.
I wanted to learn Crystal Reports 9 and this was excellent.......2003-02-20
Already a SQL, VB, and .NET programmer, I wanted o add CR to the repetoire. I picked this book up from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised with the depth and descriptions. If you're looking for a book that gives you the low down on CR, pick this one up.
I also travel as a consultant often and this book is not a 1,200 page tome either (which I appreciate).
Enjoy!
has to be the worst.......2003-02-19
This has to be the worst title I have picked up in a while. The author rambles on and on and on about things that have nothing to do with Crystal Reports. Endless filler material here with sample code that looks like it came straight from the Crystal web site. In terms of report design and use, Crystal: The Complete Reference (Peck) is a much better book and I wish I could swap this one for it!
Best & Comprehensive.......2003-01-31
This is one of the best and most content rich of all the Crystal Reports books.
Contains everything from the most basic usage to the more complex reports, formulas, SQL and programming issues.
If you are an instructor and need a book to use teaching CR this is the book for you.

debunks the twisted propaganda of equity activists.......1999-08-01
Martin Loney demolishes - rather convincingly - the rhetoric that underpins race and gender preferences in the Canadian workplace. He demonstrates that women and visible minorities, contrary to being victims of discriminatory employment practices, are at a conspicuous advantage when it comes to raises, promotions, and securing highly prized appointments. He also plots the astonishing growth of the feminist and multicultural "grievance industry" which comprises a vast network of feminist academics and group-think equity bureaucrats.
Contributing little to society other than advocacy propaganda and a drain on the public purse, equity advocates have used their alleged "victim" status to pad their bank accounts and carve out lucrative jobs in the public sector. Worse, this cartel of special-interest groups has assiduously mounted an intimidation campaign designed to muzzle anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy of affirmative action.
Loney's investigative prowess exposes the pressure tactics that equity zealots employ to invent ever-more absurd and anti-democratic legislation for the purpose of favoring designated groups over white males. He lays bare the biased research and "meretricious" use of statistics that equity advocates depend on to sway politicians into adopting preferential hiring policies. These policies simply add more layers to an already bloated bureaucracy. Embittered and self-interested preferential hiring activists have successfully duped an accommodating federal government by brandishing a misleading platform that operates under the pretense of catch-phrases like "social justice" "equity" and "progressive reform". And finally, Loney examines the intrinsically immoral practice of asserting the salience of race and gender at the expense of merit, fairness and intellectual honesty. This well-researched book is essential reading.

Book Description
This is a powerful and passionate account by a French cavalry officer of daily life on the Western Front from January 1915 to August 1916. Henri de Lcluse regarded the men who served under him as comrades and heroes and his memoir was written to memorialize those who had fallen in combat. Beautifully written and extremely moving, Lcluses memoir resembles short stories and is devoted to descriptions of artillery bombardments; raids on enemy trenches; grisly atrocities; night patrols gone awry; battlefields strewn with bodies; rivers of mud flowing through the trenches; ruined villages and stately chateaux; desecrated churches; the agonizing death of a black African soldier; a winter in Alsace; and fleeting moments of pleasure and escape amidst the nightmare of combat.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the amazons and more.
Book Description
Thalassa, the young and brave princess of the tribe of Lemnos, sees her civilizationÂ's future threatened and her world completely shaken by the arrival in her island of Elephthera, an audacious Amazon from Aretias, who seeks help for her tribe and the whole nation of warrior women after a ravaging attack of Sarmatian nomads. With the aid of their fellow sisters, they will embark on a thrilling mythological journey to save their own lives and their entire race. It will take them from Greek waters to Fezzan in the heart of the Sahara desert, and back to Aretias to face a final decisive battle that will define the course of their cultureÂ's fate. Theirs will not only be a physical, but also a spiritual quest, through which ThalassaÂ's dark secret, hidden in her mysterious eyes, will be revealed, and an unbreakable bond will be created between these two courageous women.
Customer Reviews:
I truly recommend this novel.......2006-10-01
I bought this book expecting to read an entertaining adventure and because I'm interested in the topic, but I never expected to get so involved in the story and fall for the main characters like I did. I must say that I found it a little short and so I'm already hoping there will be a sequel since I really enjoyed the relationship between Thalassa and Elephthera. My favorite part was their conversation on the ship's deck after the fight with Kalima. It is altogether very poetically written and the images trigger your imagination, so I truly recommend this novel.
A must for all xenites!.......2006-08-14
These characters are not Xena and Gabrielle, but this novel is a must for all xenities. Reasons: because all those who enjoyed Xena and Gabrielle's relantionship will find here a compelling story, with "two time warriors, two true souls" finding each other in a conflictive world. It is also, of course, a story about amazons, that is, women who fight for what they believe in and whose deeds, as the book says: "were printed in the hearts of those human beings that are today part of the female gender".
ONE GREAT ADVENTURE!.......2006-07-31
This is one of those books that never gives you a single moment to relax (action and more action that makes you feel as if you were watching a movie)... however, despite being an adventure novel, it is also a romantic story and it teaches you many lessons about friendship, courage and loyalty. It is nice to see that some authors are still concerned with promoting values and especially doing it in such a fun way.
I totally fell in love with the characters... Thalassa is soooo cool and Elephthera is also truly amazing. You can't miss this book, it is one great adventure!
Two thumbs up!.......2006-07-30
I liked the book because apart from being entertaining, it is written in an artistic style and has a good mythological research... did anyone else notice the meaning of the characters' names in Greek?
The book has lots of great action, an unconditional love story and beautiful warrior women... what more can you ask for?
