Not being that well versed in Kiley-ism, or even being that familiar with his legacy, this book may or may not be an accurate representation. But there is no doubt that this book is an excellent source of inspiration for pulling oneself out of the mundane, everyday rut and realizing that the truly fabulous is possible, and not so out of reach. EXCELLENT photography, and a skillful narrative combined with some of Kiley's sketches, make this a textbook (of sorts) in spite of the ineveitable inclination to place it on a coffee table. Oh, go ahead and buy it. You'll use it.

Falke is a brilliant, although grossly under recognized, photographer. His photographs dare to be quiet and thoughtful in a time when media saturates us with disposable imagery. Humorous and poignant, his masterful images are observations of social behavior. DO NOT be seduced into thinking that these are merely landscapes in an old tradition. This book reveals a unique and powerful vision and Falk's ability to craft acute cultural and visual connections.

This one was given to me as a gift by an Alaskan friend, and I shall cherish it. It is an absolutely awesome collection of photographs of the Northern Lights, with accompanying text describing the legends, myths and theories surrounding the phenomenon.

The typography and layout are first-class, and the whole project is an absolutely flawless collection of photographs and prose relating to the Aurora Borealis.

This spectacular collection of Aurora Borealis photographs is absolutely breathtaking. Daryl Pederson and Calvin Hall have captured the essence of the mysterious wonders of the Northern Lights with their combined abilities. Having lived in Alaska we have long admired the rare talents of Mr Pederson. My husband and I own many of his prints and continue to enjoy them daily. We most definately will order some from this offering. This book is a must for everyone who appreciates the visual splenders displayed by the Aurora Borealis or just loves to look at georgeous photography.

In terms of quality of life indicators like literacy, life expectancy and infant mortality, the state of Kerala is ahead not only of the rest of the country but of almost all developing nations. Indeed, Kerala is often held up as an outstanding model of high social development in the developing world. In stark contrast is KeralaÆs low level of economic development. This is manifested most notably in a very pronounced incidence of unemployment which is three to five times higher than the all-India average. Employment and Unemployment in Kerala provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of employment and unemployment trends for Kerala utilizing the most reliable statistics, combined with E. T. MathewÆs own sample survey. The aim is to understand the causes for the very high rate of unemployment in Kerala despite the fact that it scores very high in social development indices. The author analyzes a number of aspects such as worker-population ratios, the decline in subsidiary status workers, the significant growth in casual employment, sectoral patterns of employment, and the impact of migration on employment. E. T. Mathew concludes that unemployment among the educated in Kerala has assumed alarming proportions and that this is particularly acute among women who have passed their secondary school exams. Good account of the big picture of the events leading up to the "bomb blast". I wish it covered the operations afterwards more, but good none the less.

An Eye Opening Heart Breaker.......2005-12-05

A chronicle of all that can go wrong when misguided policies and intentions expose our troops to dangers and horrific results that could well have been avoided or, at the very least, mitigated. The Marines in Beirut were forced to abandon every precept of defensive theory ~ billeted in a single, exposed structure, for instance ~ to satisfy the political "don't make it look like we're there to DO something" heebeejeebees of the Administration. You will weep like a baby at the heroics; not just of the rescues after the bombing, but of the incredible difficulties the Marines faced just walking the streets among the warring factions. The Rules of Engagement did not allow them to return fire (which is happening at this moment in another Middle East conflict) without utilizing a torturous chain of command process, most times resulting in denying them permission to defend themselves. As you can imagine, it became open season on Marines. And, if you care about our troops at all, you will be seething with anger at their impotence and treatment by the Administration, the DOD and State Department.

This is a magnificent book. These are lessons that have yet to be learned. The only ones who suffer for such political restrictions are the people we should be cherishing and protecting with all the power at our command, if we need send them in harm's way.

Wonderful, the truth.......2004-02-14

This wonderful account tells the story of the peacekeeping Americans who came to Beirut to help aid the peace efforts of the international community. Instead the Americans only found bloodshed as fascist terrorists bombed their barracks and their embassy, all this because the Americans dared to try to prevent the genocide taking place against the christians of lebanon. This book explains how the terrorists bombed the americans so the americans would leave and the terrorists could go back to committing genocide while no one watched. A wonderful account, a great anecdote that shows how the war on terror should not be fought.

International Terrorism made heroic.......2000-09-24

This books makes the tragic marine occupation a heroic act, one warranted and needed, while ignoring the absolutlely unarguable role "The Root" played in advancing the United State's colonial-style role in the Middle East. This book should not ignore the Marines who died but make clear that they, like the Lebanese and Palestinians, are the victims of the United States attempt to gain contorl over the region. It was the United States who incited and allowed Isreal to attack Lebanon, the United States who funded the Isrealis, and the United States who can be counted as responsible for the massacres in Sabra, Shatilla, and the chaos brought upon Beirut. This book hails the actions of the government as heroic, ignoring their self-intereseted, despotic, international tyranny and attempts to gain power at any end, over the lives of Marines, Lebanese, and Palestinians. The Root would be better known as The Massacre.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE.......2003-08-13

This account of efforts to understand and deal with threatened bird extinctions on Guam is a gem of a book. The paperback's blurbs focused on Jaffe's "ecological detective thriller." But I found most compelling the seamlessness of the book's widely-informed joined elements -- including biographical and political sketches of great pith, accessible population biology, and a good-scientists-versus-stupid-and-finally-thwarted-others story.

The ecological culprit was not some natural substance, and not even one of homo sapiens' products (the book's index lists only three references to DDT). Nor was he us. But he was (and is) one of our fellows -- a little predator incredibly well adapted to feeding on birds' eggs.

After the paucity and untimeliness of the governmental response to the Guamanian situation had sunk into my consciousness, it seemed ironic that the book ends with the United States Air Force establishing a 50-acre "environmental reclamation experiment" on Guam which Jaffe hopes will provide the setting for much more effective research on the culprit. Like The Lord of the Flies ends with her majesty's warship rescuing from themselves the band of island-stranded, warring boys.
