If you already have some knowledge of how to make salt dough models, then this book is great. It has many ideas, but not a lot of detailed instruction.

                Book Description

Using his own story as a metaphor for all success in life , Brian Tracy shows how anyone can find similar lessons in his or her own life, and learn from them the simple yet essential steps a person can take to realize and achieve the greatness within.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Story that Inspires!.......2007-08-28

This is about Brian's trip thorugh the Shahara desert and the lessons he learnt along the way. It's full of lessons and Brian tells how he invested this experience into his business life and the results he got!
                Great fun read!

3 out of 5 stars Not the usual Brian Tracy book I expected.......2004-08-16

First of all, I must admit that I am a true Brian Tracy fan who had read his books and attended his franchised seminars. Tracy and Robbins are the two best writers/speakers of the league, in my opinion. However, perhaps I am not flexible enough, I really could not connect myself to this travel log of Brian (the predominant style and content of the book) interwoven with his wise and encouraging messages. For those who like reading novels or adventure type of book, this can be a go. If not, please give this a pass and pick, "Victory!", my all time favorite, with satisfaction guaranteed.

5 out of 5 stars Many Stars that shine.......2003-08-17

I have listened to and admired Brian Tracy for years and have often wondered where he came from.He is so confident and self assured. And most of all extremely knowledgable about people and sales. Some of us go to the college of hard knocks instead of the University however Brian put those experiences to awesome use.It was nice to get to know him starting out along the path to success.
I urge anyone who is a seeker to read this. I hope he continues the story .

                3 out of 5 stars Uncanny reading.......2003-08-11

I read this book through in less than one day and found it essentially a pleasant adventure story with one very important message: you can be a naive idiot and still succeed if you have the correct attitude and strength. Brian and his colleagues made many undisputedly stupid decisions which burnt their fingers. However their response to the consequences was what saw them through. This message has value, since we all make less than perfect decisions on a regular basis (those of us who venture to actively make decisions, that is!). Brian Tracey hammers home that we should continue to make decisions even if it is apparent we are making wrong ones and proposes an attitude toward this, via the parable of his book.

Sometimes the book did seem to read a "truism" into every event, and often these "truisms" would contradict each other. I felt there was too much of this and it was not pointed out strongly enough that, sometimes, both "too many cooks spoil the broth" and "many hands make light work" could apply - it is up to one's judgement which has most weight in a given situation.

Generally a good read, and one I could relate to with my own life. Don't take every word of wisdom too seriously, but enjoy Brian's very good writing hand, and I hope you (as I did) will gain something worthwhile in terms of attitude from this tale.

5 out of 5 stars Tracy is King.......2003-08-06

When it comes to motivational speaking and writing, nobody tops Tracy. Personally, motivation doesn't do much for me. Instead, I read stories of what NOT to do in business, like what they have on the Not Yet Successful Entrepreneur Zone....

                      Book Description

In an effort to understand the roots of gender inequality, Myra Strober and Agnes Miling Kaneko Chan conducted an extensive survey of the 1981 graduates of Stanford and Tokyo Universities--parallel populations in historically very different cultures. First-hand comments from the graduates are combined with quantitative analyses for a lively examination of the career and family choices of these highly educated women and men. The authors take a fresh look at the widespread belief that U.S. gender equity is light years ahead of Japan's. The elite group of Japanese and Americans in their study describe surprisingly similar experiences as they faced the job market and began raising families.

I think if one bothers to investigate the costs to women of having children then many social ills can be more accurately studied and hopefully prevented. The big difference seems to be social opportunities and social acceptance between the two countries otherwise the situations tend to parallel. The gold is in the statistics such as the difference in resentment of shouldering more housework was amplified if the woman was not working and how the males were more likely to share in housework if the wife was making a financial contribution. This information is interesting. It would make a truthful mother's day gift and it may be welcomed since part of the pain is society's ignorance/deafness to the true costs. The title is from Christina Rosetti's poem but some mothers or anyone who has ever heard a mother choke up telling herr tale of self-abnegation may recognize a darker truth from the bible as well:
"The road winds uphill all the way. There are many difficulties, privations and hardships."

                      "Beloved of God" (Romans 1:7)

Beloved of God, Paul calls his Roman friends. There is music in the very sound and cadence of the words, like the bells of the Angelus ringing through the evening sky.

This is the penitent's song. My iniquities are forgiven. My diseases are healed. My life is redeemed from destruction. The God of my salvation has crowned me, through Jesus Christ, with His tenderest mercies. This is the soldier's security. Around me, within me, are enemies too strong for my feeble arm and fickle heart. But the Lord of Hosts is on my side and victory is sure. I am beloved of Him who has all power. This is the pilgrim's staff. The road winds uphill all the way. There are many difficulties, privations and hardships. Shall I be able to persevere to the end? Yes, I am beloved of Him, Jehovah-jireh, the Lord who sees and provides.
This is the saint's assurance. God is not the God of the dead but of the living. If he is mine and I am His, the grave will not end our fellowship. I am beloved of Him whose years are from everlasting, and to whom both my body and soul are unspeakably dear.

5 out of 5 stars Comparing the Gender Gap in the U. S. and Japan.......2000-04-29

The Road Winds Uphill All The Way: Gender, Work and Family in the United States and Japan. By Myra H. Strober and Agnes M. K. Chan. Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 1999, 276 pp.

Stober and Chan maintain that the economic position of women in the United States bears a number of uncanny similarities to that of Japanese women. This is one of a number of disconcerting conclusions they draw from a study of the Stanford and Tokyo (Todai) University graduating classes of 1981, surveyed roughly a decade after graduation. Readers interested in the details of campus life in these two schools will come away disappointed, but those seeking to learn what happened to the graduates later in life will be richly rewarded.

The book focuses on the difficulty of combining work and family for those entering, or seeking to enter, the highest echelons of the professions and management. Strober and Chan recognize the distinctiveness of their elite sample, but this is clearly an important group. They typically set the trends for their respective societies, and will likely formulate the work-family policies that govern the daily work routines of their country-men and women.

Strober and Chan recall their personal child-care dilemmas after returning to work in Washington, D. C. and Tokyo, respectively. Their stories immediately draw the reader into the question of which country poses a greater array of obstacles for working mothers to overcome. Yet it is the statistical similarities between Japan and the U. S. that Strober and Chan return to throughout the book.

The female-male ratio of earnings for full time earners ten years after graduation was .80 for the Stanford graduates, nearly identical to the .79 ratio found in the Todai sample. Moreover, men and women in both countries expected the gender gap to widen as their careers unfolded. When respondents were asked what they expected to earn at the peak of their careers, the female/ male ratio is a dramatic .459 in the Stanford sample and .548 in the Todai sample. In other words, women graduating from these top-ranked schools expected to make about half as much as their male counterparts at the peak of their careers.

A number of countervailing differences account for these similarities. Todai women were a small and very elite group, which contributed to a smaller gap in the Todai sample. At the same time, earnings inequality is narrower in Japan than in the United States, which tends to mute the gender gap in earnings. On the other hand, child care options are broader in the United States, but still far from adequate. Stanford women reported more numerous child care options, and were less likely to experience career interruptions after childbirth. Some Todai mothers reported being forced to quit their jobs after the birth of a child, an experience not mentioned by the Stanford women.

Who took care of the children? It depends on who you ask. Just over half of the Stanford fathers reported sharing child care equally with their wives when they were not at work, but only thirty percent of their female counterparts reported being in such marriages. This gap grows to 56 percent versus 21 percent among Stanford parents working full time. Responses to the slightly different child care question posed to the Todai sample suggests an even lower level of participation by men in parenting. Most of the Todai fathers (60 percent) said they spend less than half of their free time on their children, while nearly all (97 percent) of the working Todai mothers said they spend half or more of their free time with their children. There are many other interesting analyses, including an examination of the effect of relative earnings on the share of housework in the two samples, and the determinants of earnings. The bargaining model of housework appears to fit the U. S. data but receives little support in the Japanese analysis. Working in a large firm shaped earnings in Japan: women were less likely to be employed in these firms, and received a lower premium when they did. Male Stanford graduates from upper-class backgrounds earned significantly more than their classmates. Analysts of gender, earnings, and family relations will find many such interesting results to ponder.

The Japanese birth rate (1.57 children per woman ) is well below the replacement level. Strober and Chan suggest that policy changes should be made to help make it more feasible for women to combine work with motherhood. They recommend efforts to reduce gender discrimination and occupational segregation, and call for more flexible employment and high quality child care. They recommend similar reforms in the United States, which are aimed at promoting gender equity rather than fertility levels.

This thoughtful and timely book deserves a wide audience. Clearly written, it is accessible to the general public, upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. The presentation of the survey results and statistical findings are supplemented with informative quotations from the respondents. Its policy recommendations flow directly from the meticulously documented findings. This work should provide further impetus to comparative research on gender inequality.

This book was very enjoyable with many good tips. Many of the ideas and suggestions are helpful for all parents, not just those who are working. The book is easy to read and broken into short quick-to-read sections.

A good buy for parents struggling with how to become better parents.

5 out of 5 stars "What Are Generals Made Of?".......2001-06-30

While my comments do not stem from the "Follow Me" series, they are pertinent to topics covered in Maj. General Aubrey S. "Red" Newman's "Follow Me" chapters included in previous edition[s] of his compiled articles in "What are Generals Made Of?" and "Army" magazine. I had the privilege of knowing Red personally as we lived near each other in Sarasota, FL. I do not think this tarnishes my evaluation of his works. When he gave me his "Generals" book in 1992, I was twelve years old. I did not immediately attain or recognise the truth and practical human wisdom contained therein. Only now, as a new member of the Air Force, do I realise and cherish the trove of a lifetime of experience that General Newman set to paper. As a member of the Air Force, I can attest to the fact that his book is replete with Army stories, anecdotes, and such, yet I also emphasise that his books are applicable to ANYONE, or as a previous reviewer attested, to any profession. The palpable character of Red in his works is a testament to his daily life and manner. General Newman readily admits that his path to success[or anyone else's] is impossible to formulate into a set procedure; rather the characteristics of good leadership combined with "INFLUENCES THAT SHAPE PEOPLE'S LIVES," determine the success of our leaders. One theme in "Generals" is that all officers require the element of human understanding. While it is not a book which purports to promise overnight success, it helps guide one's daily actions. I wish you the best of luck.

                          3 out of 5 stars Provides insight.......2001-01-25

Enjoyable. This book provides good insight into what life in the pre-WWII Army was like. You should enjoy this book if you have any interest in the military.

5 out of 5 stars Little useful tidbits of life.......1999-05-29

Instead of expounding boring theories spiced up with a few ancedotes, Maj Gen Newman has instead adopted a story telling format. He then comments on his experience. As explained at the beginning of the book, it is through experiences that we learn and he is sharing with us his experience. This book, although placed in a military context is useful ANYWHERE!

5 out of 5 stars Valuable leadership lessons, drawn from life........1997-08-02

Based on a long-running series of essays in ARMY Magazine, this work is based on the learning and wisdom of a highly decorated officer of wide experience in both command and staff. General Newman is not only an effective warrior but also a fine teacher able to bring the lessons to life with real examples taken from both peacetime and combat incidents.
While the text is specifically intended for military leaders, the lessons are so universally applicable that it might be said that with their diligent use, one could hardly fail, in any profession.
Volume I is one of three. While there is some repetition over the three volumes, (due to their origin as periodical essays), this hardly detracts from their usefulness. Get all three and spend some profitable time in the company of a fine gentleman and a great leader.
