Edge of Empire examines struggles over urban space in four contemporary first world cities: two sites in London, and two in the Australian cities of Perth and Brisbane. Through these examples the spatialized cultural politics of a number of postcolonial processes are unravelled: the imperial nostalgias of the one-time heart of empire, the City of London; the struggle of diasporic groups to make a homespace in the old imperial heartlands; the unsettling presence of Aboriginal claims for the sacred in the space of the modern city. The book is distinctive in that it takes theories of colonialism and postcolonialism to the space of the city, giving real space to the spatial metaphors of much contemporary social theory. It is about the unruly spatial politics of race and nation, nature and culture, past and present.

Jane Jacobs, Pennsylvanian not Canadian.......2004-03-07

I did not read this book, but I simply had to point out that the reviewer from Arlington, MA, tried to make a distinction between Jane Jacobs, the author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities, and Jane M. Jacobs, the author of this book, and used incorrect information. The reviewer stated that Jane Jacobs was a Canadian. While she maintains her current residence in Toronto, Canada, she was born and raised in Scranton, PA, and hence is not only an American, but a PENNSYLVANIAN.

Postcolonialism from both sides now.......2002-07-25

This is a fascinating and theoretically nuanced study of the effects of colonialism and postcolonialism on cities. Jacobs looks not only at classically postcolonial cities, those in former colonies, but also at the effects of colonialism on cities at the center of the empire, such as London. The book is well written and accessible, and does an excellent job of grounding theory in the particulars of physical space.

Not by who you think........1999-03-10

This book is not written by the famous canadian author Jane Jacobs who wrote classic _The Death and Life of Great American Cities_ but instead by an identically named individual. The book is interesting but not in the same league was the Canadian Jane Jacobs.

The Thames and Hudson Manual of Architectural Ceramics.......2000-10-04

Excellent book for Architectural Ceramics includes historical examples, types of clays, mold making, faience and terracotta, tile making, glazes, installation and safety. The scale also includes industrial applications as well as techniques for the individual studio artist.I found it very useful for designing one's own tools for specific uses. There is also good instruction for designing tiles using Tessellations. The chapter on glazes gives the procedure for testing applications on wet to dry to bisqued wares. It is for technically advanced worker in ceramics.

Holy moly!.......2003-01-20

My wonderful wife bought me this masterpiece 10 yrs. ago. I open it up anytime I need photographic inspiration. Why did I not take one of his seminars? This book, in my biased opinion, would be worth 150 bucks (in great condition of course)for photographic lovers. Landscapes, close ups, surreal images........ I wish I had much more of Mr. Haas' stuff.

I always knew that my cats had psychic powers, so now I realize that others understand this also. My cat has sent me telepathic messages and don't you tell me otherwise. Plus, how else to explain the strange things ongoing not only here but anyplace where there are cats, and that seems to be everywhere. I found the scales to be humorous also - witty but "helpful". I know just the right presents to get for my cat-loving friends.

Bird Behavior and Biology...Great Stuff!!.......2002-11-03

Though a few years old, this book is a wonderful explanation of everything avian. A mixture of behavior, ecology and physiology, The Lives of Birds integrates these diciplines seamlessly and in an enjoyable way. In his explanations of how various birds are adapted to their environment Short is careful to avoid the tiresome and dopey teleology that passes for wisdom from many nature journalists (for a quick example, see PBS's "Nature").

If only my college texts were written so lucidly!

An excellent, readable book packed with stories from the curator of birds at the best natural history museum in the country. I'd taken a college Ornithology course only a few years ago and this book had many new things for me!
