One of the best books on Bromoil.......2006-09-14

I have been practicing Bromoil since about 1996 and believe this is one of the best books to come up the pike in the last 10 years. It reviews the history of the process and gives many examples of off-shoot Bromoil methods since the process was first introduced in 1907. There are many photographs illustrating the process and gives methods to use in the current photographic climate, where many of the old photographic papers have gone by the wayside. I recommend it highly for old and new Bromoil workers.

The title is not right. Should be " Computer Digital Photography". Only a very light introduction about Digital cameeras. All the rest is about scanner and photoshop.

Clark Ashton Smith was a prodigy, who wrote Arabian Nights novels in his mid-teens and was heralded as a major voice in American poetry by the time he was nineteen. In one frantic burst in the middle 1930s, he wrote nearly a hundred strange, wondrous, and grotesque stories, most of which were published in Weird Tales, Strange Tales, Wonder Stories, and other pulps, but he was by no means a conventional pulp writer. A direct heir to Edgar Allan Poe and to the late Romantics and Decadents, a translator of Baudelaire, Smith wrote in baroque, jeweled prose of distant times and remote planets, of baleful magics and reanimated corpses, lost lovers, eldritch gods, and inexorable fate. somewhat disappointing collection.......2005-05-27

hopefully, this isn't the best of clark ashton smith's work. this collection of 8 tales is disappointing overall. technically speaking, smith's effortless command of the language and attention to detail is impressive, but plot is often a weak point. what works in his favor is that smith does seem capable of being equally at ease with three categories of imaginative fiction horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. these tales might appeal to fans of h.p. lovecraft, but in truth, while interesting in an eerie, gothic way, smith's work is less intriguing and lacks the depth of that of his famous friend. it seems likely that this isn't really a sample of his best work, but more of a random overview of his output. i haven't given up on smith, yet i'm hoping that smith has other, better tales to justify his reputation as a talented creator of weird fiction..

Nice Variety of Tales.......2005-03-25

Smith offers a splendid bouquet of tales here in this very fine edition by Wildside Press. Their new releases of Smith's strange and alluring prose are nicely bound, and all feature fantastic cover art that beg the viewer to buy and open these treasure troves of pure fantasy. Highly recommended, as is the previous release of "The Double Shadow", so I really look forward to "The White Sybil" this Summer.

The perfect starter.......2005-01-31

Clark Ashton Smith was man with an unlimited imagination. His flowery tales of the fantastic and weird stand out as shining star for his time.

This book only scratches the surface of his vast collection of works, but it does offer a very diverse selection of his style.

For those who are familiar with Smith and his written works, this book will feel somewhat short and lacking.
On the other hand, If you are new to the work of CAS and would like to get a taste of his style without cleaning out your wallet in the process, then this book is for you.

It is the perfect CAS starter.

What a gem!!!.......2002-12-19

I have been absolutely miserable with my life, living in dread of each new day, for the most part unhappy, trying to keep everything safe and immune from change. And now, after reading this book, I really want to make some changes in my life. And trust me, I hate change. Now I want to change everything from furniture to really starting to pursue my art. This is a beautiful book - every time I thought I had a new objection - a way to just keep playing it safe - I picked up the book and there was a chapter that dealt with it. The book isn't just about convincing you that change can be good but gives practical examples and methods for dealing with fear, trusting yourself, synchronicities and the power of prayer. Great read.

Another Fabulous Book from Carol Adrienne!!.......2002-10-18

Carol's wisdom and insights once again inspire in this fabulous follow up to her two other books on life purpose and synchronicity. As with all her books, she offers us numerous practical exercises and steps to follow to create change in our lives. I love that she has included the advice of many experts on the various topics she covers in this work. Additionally, she profiles many unique people she has interviewed and/or taught over the years, whose life stories inspire and offer true life examples of her work and teachings. I particularly found the last two chapters helpful, on the subjects of prosperity and loss. As with her two previous books, this one is profoundly touching, inspirational and uplifting. Thanks, Carol, for once again igniting my spiritual passion and curiousity and helping me hear the wisdom of my heart and soul!!

Practical advice.......2002-10-17

I had found Carol Adrienne's previous books had too much spiritual emphasis for me. This book offers practical ideas to follow. While I did find a few sections of the book that are less focused, this book offers so much in real ideas and inspiration that you will miss much if you discount this book for a few digressions. With so much uncertainty in this world, most people would find direction in Carol's experience and words.

Disappointing and Disjointed.......2002-08-17

Adrienne's earlier book was on fire with her own energy and purpose. Here she seems to be determined to write another book but she doesn't have a really new focus.

An early chapter offers a cookbook of typical transitions with suggestions for dealing with each, attributed to a therapist. Relocation is discussed in a single paragraph, including the sentence that "Research shows that after two years people are somewhat settled..." What research? What is "somewhat settled?" In my own book, Making the Big Move, I say that research (and I cite the research) shows people need at least two years to make friends. I also note the need to start over with new relationships -- a very similar point to the one made here. Adrienne adds the banal (and overgeneralized) comment that "people love to give advice" so ask the neighbors. Other transitions are dealt with in a similarly shallow fashion.

To be sure, there are some real gems to be found later in the book. For example, dieters are urged to "fill the space with something meaningful. " The section on ego vs. intuition is excellent and the argument that "change means giving up something" deserves wide attention.

Therefore, it is disconcerting to find Adrienne associating synchronicity with "six degrees of separation," and an isolated chapter on numerology, with no guidance on using the results. I must admit that, of all occult forms, I find numerology least helpful because it seems deterministic rather than intuitive.

Still, this book does not live up to the promise of Adrienne's earlier work. We find lists and summaries where we need thought and inspiration. Overall, it's like the girl in the nursery rhyme: when it's good, it's very very good. And some sections are really really bad. And the good parts can be found elsewhere. I wish Adrienne had come up with an exciting premise that would have informed and enlivened all the chapters.

In this book, life purpose is defined as a form of goal-directed energy. I wish this book's purpose had a clearer goal and a greater infusion of creative energy.

What a terrific book!.......2002-07-23

I started to flip through the first few pages, and absolutely couldn't put it down. I was late for an appointment, but I couldn't stop reading. Carol hooked me with her compelling personal examples, her insightful wisdom, her very helpful ideas, and her uplifting, hopeful take on life. I read her last book (The Purpose of Your Life) twice. It was life changing for me. I think this book is even better!!

Pressed by advancing enemy armies on both fronts, Adolf Hitler played his final card in World War II by mobilizing all German civilian males between sixteen and sixty and indoctrinating them for a final apocalyptic defense of the Reich. The Volkssturm, created as much to boost national morale as to bolster sagging defenses, has been viewed as a negligible factor in the war. David Yelton counters that view with new insights into why the German high command sought this means to prolong an unwinnable war—-and why so many civilians chose to fight to the bitter end.

Hitler's Volkssturm is the only book in English—-and the most comprehensive in any language—-on the German militia, illuminating its role and contributions to the Nazi war effort and shedding new light on the last days of the Third Reich. It examines the militia's strategic purpose, organization, training, and combat performance on both war fronts and explores factors contributing to its sporadic tactical successes and its overall failure.

Yelton reveals why the Nazi leadership chose to assemble such last-ditch units rather than negotiating for peace and also why civilians in these units were more than willing to serve. The Volkssturm was, in fact, part of a broader, ideologically based strategy intended to turn the tide of the war. A solid, in-depth look at the Nazis' last hope.......2004-01-27

This book is a serious, in-depth look at one of the Nazis' last "miracles" against the advancing Allies toward the end of World War II, when the war was virtually lost. Masterfully researched and documented, Yelton's book reads a bit like a long academic paper, which stands to reason, as I believe the book owes its origins to Yelton's dissertation.

As the forward states, there is no one place or location that contains a significant cache of Volkssturm documents in Germany, so the author spent a great deal of time, energy and money to produce this work. It shows in the reading. Unlike many accounts of the Third Reich, most of which usually gloss over the Volkssturm, this is a critical look at the milita's origins, reasons for forming, the fight among Nazi leaders to lead the militia and its performance in battle.

A few tidbits that made for wonderful, surprising reading:
1. The Volkssturm "People Storm" was controlled by the Nazi Party, not the Wermacht. The reasons for this are many, but it largely contributed to the milita's mostly poor performance on the battlefield, with notable exceptions (also discussed in the book).

2. Nazi leaders were fearful that Volkssturm members were going to be treated as partisans if caught by Allies and subsequently shot. Shockingly to this reader, the Nazis actually initiated contact with the British and Americans prior to the milita's formation to inquire how Volkssturm members would be treated if captured. Getting a positive response from Allied leadership that the unit would be treated as a legal militia (again, to my astonishment), the Nazis proceeded to form the Volkssturm. One can't help but wonder if the Allies had denied the Volkssturm "militia status" if the war would have been shortened on the Western Front, resulting in fewer Allied deaths.

The middle of the book is a bit of a dry read, as Yelton gets bogged down in a buffet of statistics. But, sticking with the book has its rewards, as Yelton discusses at length the militia's performance in battle toward the end of the war.

I would highly recommend this book to any student of WW II who would like to know more about the Volkssturm, its origins and performance in battle. "Hitler's Volkssturm" makes a welcome addition to any World War II bookshelf.
