David Bennett is a trained civil engineer and practising architect based near London. He is a consultant in the field of concrete building and author of many publications on architecture and construction.

Thin Slump!.......2002-11-27

If your a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, Sarah Susanka, and Malcolm Wells then this overpriced book will disappoint you. It shows a bunch (22) of cold, lifeless modern concrete buildings. For me books put out by the Portland Cement Association are much better at a fraction of the cost. If your into Concrete Architecture then add it to your library only if you can pick it up somewhere for 1/4 it's price.

Fuelled by an explosive growth of computer and information technology, telecommunications, globalization, and extraordinary theoretical advances, financial engineering, e-commerce and supply chain, have become the core activities of today's economies. Financial engineering focuses upon the fundamental principles of corporate finance and investment science such as cash flow streams, arbitrage, risk aversion, pricing of firms and finance instruments, interest rate structure, fixed income instruments duration, bond portfolio immunization, and the Markowitz mean-variance portfolio theory. One of the fast growing elements of the Internet is electronic commerce, which refers to the use of electronic means to conduct business transactions within or across business entities. The Republic Aviation Corporation F-84 series, the Thunderjet, Thunderstreak, and Thunderflash was the United States Air Forces' first Post World War II jet fighter. As a somewhat sad result of this, it has been ignored by most aviation historians and aficionados. It was not the Air Forces' first operational jet fighter, as that honor went to the Lockheed F-80 which was created during World War II. And it did not receive the glory of the North American Aviation F-86, which followed it in sequence and was more photogenic, faster, and more involved in the glory of aerial combat. Nevertheless, the F-84 performed its unheralded role in a true yeoman fashion. It, and its pilots and groundcrews, fought the air-to-mud role as a fighter bomber in Korea. It served as an interceptor, and in photo reconnaissance. It was the first jet fighter to be operationally capable of air refueling, and it was the first to be able to deliver a nuclear weapon. 4300 of the straight-wing F-84s were built, along with 2713 of the swept-wing F-84Fs, and 715 of the reconnaissance RF-84Fs. Almost 8000 unrecognized fighters, of which half of those produced served as a deterrent to enemy forces during the Cold War while being flown by friendly foreign countries., over 450 b/w and color photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"

Lots of informations in a no-frills package.......2005-01-25

This book is really packed with information about the F-84 family, I found particularly well documented the section dealing with the early use of the straight wing variants,as no other book provides this aspect of the thunderjet's career.
On the minus side, the section about the use of F/RF-84 in the Italian air force is loaded with typos (none of the 20 or so Italian words is spelled correctly), but this doesn't subtract too much to the value of the book. In my opinion the ultimate reference book on the F/RF-84.

If your a F-84 fan this book is for you!.......1999-05-26

This is a solid informational and fact filled book on the F-84. I am a recent fan of the F-84 due to the release of the 1/48 tamiya kit. I wanted to learn more about this amazing jet of the fifties. This book shows all the foriegn users as well as a listing of all the USAF squadrons and groups. It also has a generous portion of color photos of operational aircraft,foriegn aircrat, and even gate guards. If your are going to build a model of the E,F,or G model F-84 this is the book. It also has good information on the FICON program. The pages are thick and sturdy. This book is definetly a premier book in my collection. A very good buy for the amount of information contained therein.

The best one so far!, or is it the only one?.......1999-03-06

I really enjoyed and have bought three of them for my old airforce buddies. The F-84 is such a forgotten airplane, it is amazing that anyone found so many pictures. Enjoy!

The Variable Star Menagerie.......2000-06-05

This book is written for professional astronomers as a compendium of what is known (and unknown) about variable stars. (A lot of the "unknowns" are categorized as "poorly understood.") I consider the book very useful for amateur variable star observers, but general readers (it will be worth the effort) will likely need to refer to an introductory astronomical tutorial to interpret much of the material.

The "menagerie" of variables is subdivided into six natural groups bearing the following names with the numbers of sub-classes in each group as shown. Eruptive (5), Pulsating [including Cepheids] (7), Rotating [including Pulsars] (5), Cataclysmic [including Novae] (5), Eclipsing binaries (4), and X-Ray binaries (1).

The stars in the first four groups are presented as single stars that do "poorly understood" but weird and wonderful things such as radial pulsations. One subclass of pulsating variables is alternatively explained as a close binary with a common envelope.

(Gamma-Ray bursters are not covered but many light curves of these enigmatic objects bear strong resemblance to those of some X-Ray binaries.)

The book discusses a total of 279 different variable stars and provides light curves and graphed color information for 164 of them. The bibliography contains 521 references. Two pages of neat "addresses of interest" are given for new researchers to use to obtain further information.

The book faithfully reflects a longstanding astronomical tradition of publishing very few "phase-coordinated" light curves and spectroscopic line profiles in the same study. If phase coordinated line profile information were to be incorporated with the light curves, the book might well become a paradigm flipping tool.
