Finding Lost Space: Theories of Urban Design

The problem of "lost space," or the inadequate use of space, afflicts most urban centers today. The automobile, the effects of the Modern Movement in architectural design, urban-renewal and zoning policies, the dominance of private over public interests, as well as changes in land use in the inner city have resulted in the loss of values and meanings that were traditionally associated with urban open space. This text offers a comprehensive and systematic examination of the crisis of the contemporary city and the means by which this crisis can be addressed. Finding Lost Space traces leading urban spatial design theories that have emerged over the past eighty years: the principles of Sitte and Howard; the impact of and reactions to the Functionalist movement; and designs developed by Team 10, Robert Venturi, the Krier brothers, and Fumihiko Maki, to name a few. In addition to discussions of historic precedents, contemporary approaches to urban spatial design are explored. Detailed case studies of Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; Göteborg, Sweden; and the Byker area of Newcastle, England demonstrate the need for an integrated design approach—one that considers figure-ground, linkage, and place theories of urban spatial design. These theories and their individual strengths and weaknesses are defined and applied in the case studies, demonstrating how well they operate in different contexts. This text will prove invaluable for students and professionals in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning. An interesting and practical book that will fire the imagination of anyone engaged in the design of public space.

This book identifies the problem of 'lost space'--the left over and unstructured spaces of our cities. It then goes on to identify how to redesign these spaces for more interesting and humane cities.

It finishes with some specific principles for the design of spaces and design processes.

Drawing on three fields of economics (international, labour, and development), this study shows that expansion of North-South trade in manufactures has had a far greater impact on labour markets than earlier work suggested. In the South, unskilled workers have benefited most from this trade, but in the North, the gains have been concentrated on skilled labour, while unskilled workers have suffered falling wages and rising unemployment. This decline in the economic position of unskilled workers has increased inequality, and aggravated crime and other forms of social erosion, on both sides of the Atlantic. The failure of Northern governments to recognize that trade with the South has these adverse side-effects, and to take appropriate counter-measures, has fuelled the rise of protectionism - the worst possible response, which slows economic progress in both regions. The best solution for the longer term in the North is more investment in education, to raise the supply of skilled labour. However, the benefits of this investment will emerge slowly. During the next one or two decades, Professor Wood argues, other measures are also urgently needed to boost the demand for, and incomes of, unskilled workers.

This book is one of my texts for clinical herbal medicine and is a fantastic reference and resource book that I use regularly. Actually, in terms of nutrition, it is the first resource book I pick up. Thorough information on all the essential nutrients including safety issues. Highly recommended. The only aspect it lacks is essential amino acids, which is why it gets four stars instead of five.

I have grown weary of Health Shop and pharmacy employees whos expertise is limited to certain areas of medication and their interactions. I take many suppliments and could not get accurate information on interactions, and other detailed information necessary to make good informed choices. Until now. At times like this, I wish I'd gone to med school, or been a journalist, to be able to accurately and succinctly review this excellent book. Suppliments and other medications can be dangerous together, and it is imperative to be informed, so as to only take what's both necessary and healthful. At last a book that covers EVERY aspect of supplimentation, and nutritional therapy. It accurately covers interactions, ACCURATE dosage, and dangers associated. If like me, you are bombarded with information from the bottles of companies desperate to sell you their product, regardless if you really need it or not.. then this book will be a breath of fresh air for you. Nothing is left out, only pertinent information left in. A real treasure for the health conscious.

The Bible of Nutritional Supplement Information!.......2007-01-07

This is an outstanding piece of work that Michael Murray has compiled! Whether you are a beginner or an expert in nutrition, you will find this book very insightful ! In this work he documents a comprehensive list of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, nutrients, and glandular extracts. Mr. Murray also elaborates on the functions and uses of each to provide sound education to the reader. My favorite part of the book is that he includes many different lists of whole food sources to obtain everything listed above. For instance, when he discusses Magnesium, he breaks down what foods have the highest magnesium content and what foods have the lowest. This is an extremely valuable source of nutritional information and I would recommend this book to everyone!

This is a valuable book for the layperson and professional, for the understanding of the complexities and properties of vitamins and minerals. However this book is now 10 years old and showing signs of age, and would benefit from a significant update, as some of the information is no longer applicable.

The section called "Understanding Fats and Oils" is probably the weakest link in the chain for this book, and the reader would be well guided to ignore this section. This is a shame because the effect of lipids on the human body is profound in terms of health benefits. To replace this section, the reader would be wise to read the publications written by Dr Mary Enig and Canadian Udo Erasmus, who are two of the leading research experts on the subject of fats and oils.

Also in this encyclopedia the section on cholesterol is also inaccurate. Better to read the books written on cholesterol by Swedish Dr Uffe Ravnskov, as well the recent book by Fitness Expert Anthony Colpo on cholesterol.

However as I mentioned before, this is an excellent encyclopedia, and I greatly look forward to a future update from the author to replace my well worn copy. Also a hard cover would be nice and I dont mind paying the extra cost. Whilst paperback is fine for books you read just once, hard cover is better suited to a reference book like this encyclopedia.

Buy it because it is worth it........2000-08-05

I've gotten to the point that I just buy anything by Dr. Mindell. Everything he produces is packed with good information that is understandable and usable. He also doesn't fall into that trap of just repeating what he wrote in previous books. Each one shows thorough research and an understanding of how these nutritional supplements are an asset to our health. A site that I have found which dovetails nicely with Mindell's research is PapaNature. I have used Mindell's book to double check their documentation and between that and their good product choices I have been impressed. They must have Mindell's books in their own library. Everyone should.

An emotive introduction to an influencial artists work........1999-09-10

C.F.Tunnicliffe was one of the most significant British wildlife artists of the 20th century. This book draws together his own words and pictures of the Peregrine falcon, a bird that has suffered greatly over recent years. Robert Gillmor introduces the book before Tunnicliffe's own words take you to the dizzying heights of South Stack, Anglesey, where he records the struggle of a pair of Peregrine as they raise their young high above the Irish Sea. For those privileged to have visited his haunts, the book is an emotive return. For those of you unfamiliar with Tunnicliffe's Cob, Malltraeth and Shorelands retreat, this will surely whet your appetite. I hope that you feel inspired to add this book to your Tunnicliffe collection, and if new to his work, feel bold enough to explore his adopted home in North Wales through his artist eyes.

This is from Philip Thody's introduction to this volume." The essays and other texts published in this volume are not primarily concerned with Camus's philosophical or political ideas. They are intended to give a portrit of Camus the writer and literary critic, as well as of Camus the individual" The volume is divided into four sections, the first on Lyrical Essays the second on Critical Essays, the third 'Camus on The Outsider and the Plague, the fourth on Sketches for a Self- Portrait.
The essays and notebooks do not have the force of his major works, but it is good to have more Camus, more of his reflective wisdom and his lyrical perception of life.
Here is an excerpt from an essay titled, " The Future of Tragedy" It seems in fact that tragedy is born in the West each time that the pendulum of civilization is halfway between a sacred society and a society built around man. On two occasions, twenty centuries apart , we find a struggle between a world that is still interpreted in a sacred context and men who are already committed to their individuality, that is to say, armed with the power to question. In both cases , the individual increasingly asserts himself , the blance is gradually destroyed and the tragic spirit falls silent.When Neitzsche accuses Socrates of having dug the grave of classical Greek tragedy, he is right up to a certain point- exactly to the same extent that it is true to say of Descartes that he marks the end of the tragic movement born of the Renaissance. In fact, the traditional Christian universe is called into question by the Reformation, the discovery of the world and the flowering of the scientific spirit. Gradually, the individual stands up against the sacred order of things and against destiny. Shakespeare then throws his passionate creatures against the simulataneously evil and just order of the world. Death and pity invade the stage and once againthe final words of tragedy ring out " A higher life is born of my despair".
