Book Description
Since Vitruvius described in his famous work not only fixed buildings but also mobile objects and constructions, the possibility of incorporating change and motion into architecture has continued to fascinate architects. Yet it is only since radically new materials and IT media have been developed that the dream has become reality. "Flying Dutchmen" shows the way a selection of innovative Dutch architects have incorporated the issue of movement in their buildings. The examples are drawn by OMA/Rem Koolhaas, NOX Architects, Kas Oosterhuis, UN Studio, NL Architects, Bentham Crouwel, and Herman Hertzberger. The analyses provide a fascinating glimpse into the design process and its results, from sensitive surfaces to dynamic spaces, from aerodynamic forms to interactively linked buildings. Kari Jormakka is Professor for Architecture Theory at the Vienna University of Technology and heads the architectural office Wombat.

getting behind the rhetoric.......2003-05-23
This book is of most interest in getting behind the rhetoric used by contemporary avant-garde architects in regards to developing an architecture responsive to the physical structure of reality, often propped up by questionable references to philosophers such as Deleuze and Bergson. Jormakka cleverly shows how the interest in movement is hardly something new. History indeed seems to be repeating itself. My only problem with the book is that it doesn't go far enough - Jormakka never questions the questionable "search for truth" which these endeavours are ultimately driven by - indeed, he seems to rather admire the works (such as that of UN Studio) he criticises. The question then arises, is the architecture of interest - even beautiful ! - regardless of the rhetoric behind it, thus putting into doubt theoretical approaches to architecture. It would also have been of interest to take on the question of the sublime - the overpowering feeling of large scale - which also lies behind many of these schemes.

Portraits of contemporary Onondaga people of the Iroquois.......2000-09-15
This is an extraordinary collection of 78 moving and culturally sensitive photographs, with an historically illustrative accompanying text, of members of the Onondaga Nation of the People of the Longhouse, the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois). Emanating from each individual or group portrait is a feeling of dignity, beauty, courage, resolve, and hope which mirror the long history of native people's struggles to retain and pass on to their children and grandchildren their rich heritage of living on the earth with wisdom and responsibility. Developed as a project with the full cooperation of the subjects themselves, and photographed in the old Longhouse on the Onondaga Nation Territory near Syracuse, NY in 1991/92, this is a remarkable and beautiful visual and historical record of survival.

Great guide for where to shop.......2001-05-30
I bought the 1993 edition while I was living in Central NY and can only comment on the Central NY listings. I found the format easy to skim through and the maps/directions extremely helpful. All the information you might want is included--phone numbers, hours of operation, genres sold, etc. Occasionally the description of a store's offerings was not quite right, or the place in question no longer existed, but such changes can happen when there are several years between editions. I intend to buy the edition for NC once I get moved in.

Book Description
This practical guide provides a wealth of hints to help a sleepless child get that much-needed rest. Whether it's colic, crying, bedtime, naptime, bad dreams, or the inevitable "I need a drink of water," the author suggests an innovative solution, from capturing the "scary monster" in a paper bag to discouraging sleepwalking with a bell on the doorknob. The book also discusses how parents can cope with their own loss of sleep and when, or whether, to let the baby into their bed.
Customer Reviews:
An Easy-to-read Book with a lot of Helpful Suggestions .......2005-10-15
Getting Your Child to Sleep - and Back to Sleep is an easy to read little book that is full of all kinds of suggestions for helping a child sleep through the night. It begins by explaining the sleep patterns that can be expected for the first six months of a child's life. It goes through some of the problems that could be encountered and offers a variety of solutions to try. Other topics that are discussed include naptime, bad dreams (solutions for these are quite good), colic, crying, and tips for the parent who is trying to deal with fatigue.
Getting Your Child to Sleep... is set up in such a way that exhausted caregivers can turn to a topic of interrest and read bullet-point solutions quickly, without being lulled to sleep by legnthy paragraphs. I personally found that to be quite helpful. I think that other busy, sleep-deprived caregivers would agree. There are also quotes from other caregivers sharing tips and other personal experiences that they had with their children.
There were only a couple of things that I didn't agree with. The first was a tip for eliminating night feedings. Ms. Lansky suggested having a child suck on an empty bottle. I thought that would make a child's tummy gassy, and therefore make the child uncomfortable and unable to go back to sleep. The second was her belief that the way to "change the deal" for an older child not sleeping through the night was to ultimately let him or her cry. She suggested, if that wasn't working, to check the child every fifteen minutes until the child fell asleep. (a variation on the Ferber Method). Even Ms. Lansky acknowledged that there would be those who wouldn't agree with that, and she suggested taking a look at Tracy Hogg's, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, for other solutions.
I liked this little book, and I would recommend it to caregivers who are searching for solutions for a child's sleep problems and trying to cope with the exhaustion that comes from being awakened all through the night.
Customer Reviews:
Old outdated ideas.......2006-02-21
This book was written in 1991 and I think the ideas even predate that era. Many old ideas that no longer are recommended, some are even dangerous (whiskey as a sleep inducer, letting baby sleep on tummy.) If you want a cry-it-out sleep book go to Ferber, if you want a non-crying plan go to Pantley (No-Cry Sleep Solution)
this book was absolutely terrible! give my baby whiskey? NO.......1999-08-31
When I started reading this book, I intended to give it the benefit of the doubt, but when I got to the part where it said to put a few drops of whiskey in my baby's water bottle, I said, "FORGET IT!" I put the book down. I will never feed alcohol to my baby, nor should anyone. This book has some really erroneous thoughts to it. I realize the book is older, also, but it was scary to read that you should put your baby on his/her tummy to sleep. This book was full of bad information.
a rehash of the cry it out theme.......1997-04-09
Babies and children cry for a reason, and is their first formof communication. Ignoring their cries teaches them that they aren'timportant and no one is going to care for their needs. Many desperate parents grab books like this, follow it, and have their hearts broken- in order to sleep. Babies arent' programmed to sleep through the night, something that Dr Ferber, a detached segment of our society and many non creative authors seem to have forgotten. Read "Nighttime Parenting" by William and Martha Sears, and their book on SIDS for a good understanding of sleep in babies and children.

Book Description
Trinity: The Burrs versus Alexander Hamilton and the United States of America will be the first book to draw on unreported documents and genealogical information to reveal an unprecedented look into the relationships of Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, Trinity Church Corporation and the Loyalists of Manhattan Island. Author Alan J. Clark shows in new perspective the battles and intrigues leading beyond the American Revolutionary War. With the melding of genealogy and timeline analysis Clark examines some of the intriguing ciphered letters of Aaron Burr to his daughter Theodosia, and looks again at Burr's curious and complex war time exploits to determine where his Loyalist tendencies actually began. Clark further examines the land leases then traded prior, during, and after the war as speculation, or possibly as rewards from the English Crown for services performed in its favor in the colonies primarily through the Corporation of Trinity Church. The economics of early Manhattan and the Atlantic colonies were bolstered by the complex and secular behavior of the Corporation of Trinity Church acting as land bank for the Loyalists to the Throne of England. Clark appears to fill in the gaps in many recently published tomes by delving deeper into the actions of Burr and Hamilton, examining their extensive familial connections and behaviors to arrive at a complex web of intricacy bringing to life American History at its most personal level. This book does not reiterate the well worn paths of American History. Instead, it brings a crisp new approach that makes sense of seemingly insignificant, disjointed and inconsistent stories of the early history of our country.
Customer Reviews:
Of its type, very good.......2007-01-05
I bought this book based largely on other reviewers. If you are a someone who really gets into the minutia of family names connected to Burr and Hamilton, this book is for you. The author also makes the assumption (and says so in the introduction) that the reader understands the basic history of the events. The casual reader of history may not make it through this book, getting lost in the detailed connections of various relatives of Burr and Hamilton. There are fascinating revelations and speculations unearthed, making it a decent book.
Aaron Burr, Hero or Traitor?.......2006-08-09
Based on facts little known or revealed elsewhere
Clark, the author, advances a theory novel to American
History that Aaron Burr was a loyalist throughout his
life, even during the Revolutionary War, wherein he is
most commonly thought an American hero. Using
genealogy, land deeds and leases Clark finds
connections to the British hitherto ignored by
Historians. This book is not a rehash of current
accepted American history. His interpretation of
Aaron Burr's own coded letters in his published
Memoirs fall in neatly with this theory. He gives new
political meaning to the duel between Aaron Burr and
Alexander Hamilton beyond a trifling slight. He even
points the reader toward an interpretation of current
events with roots in the Loyalist American cause.
This book will make you think that history may still
be ripe for reinterpretation.

New slant on Burr using his own letters and other overlooked documents .......2006-08-08
I read this book through in one sitting because it covered strikingly different ground from that in standard history books. Translating Burr's ciphered letters for the first time and relating them to events of the era, the author has uncovered Burr's collaboration with the British during the Revolution and his subsequent intentions to undermine the fledgling American democracy. Using original land deeds of the era as evidence, the author presents a powerful rationale for Burr's misdeeds. This is a thought provoking work to read and discuss with others who enjoy history and its rogue protagonists.
Aaron Burr Is Slimed Again.......2006-01-22
In essence, Alan Clark's book is one big gossip column. The only difference between his work and those of other gossip mongers in our nation's periodicals is that the latter know how to write a coherent sentence, properly punctuated and generally void of misspellings. Of course, they must submit to the discipline of editors and they usually write for reputable publishers who demand that quotations be checked, that facts be accurate and that documentation be provided. Clark does not concern himself with any of these things. His book is a self-published, printed-on-demand product, a growing part of the "listen to me" industry that also includes personal websites known as blogs.

Book Description
The Zulus were a fiercely independent and extremely brave warrior race. When the might of the British army was defeated by this indigenous foe at Isandlwana in 1879, it sent shock waves throughout the Empire-1300 British troops and their African allies were killed. In the aftermath, Zulu reserves mounted a raid on a British border post at Rorke's Drift, which was held by just 145 men. After ten hours of ferocious fighting the Zulus were driven away. Eventually superior weaponry carried the day for the British. Invading Zululand, the British took the capital of Ulundi and 5,000 British defeated 20,000 Zulus. King Cetewayo was captured and the war was over.
