Igor Tjarkovsky controversial researcher.......2000-03-02
I have his personally autographed book. I was fascinated to meet him and explore his work when he visited LA in 1993.He is probably the most controversial Infant Swim Researcher in the World. Mothers giving birth to babies in the Baltic Sea with dolphins near by? Raising his own daughter in a specially built aquarium because of his belief that he could strenthen her immune system? His work is shaped by his belief in human adaptation. He consistently used the hardening process of working with infants and toddlers in ice cold water believing this would strengthen their immunity.Controversial by all standards in the infant swim world, neverthe less he is a pioneer of sorts showing that tiny babies have an innate ability to not only survive but actually adapt to what many would consider an unfriendly environment. I give the book 5 stars because anyone working with infants in water will be challenged and astonished by what he has done. you must read it even if you are aghast at what he was trying to prove. Or you may come away wondering what he was trying to prove and why he went so far out on the edge!
Customer Reviews:
Should be read by all small-unit leaders.......2005-11-21
This book gives an excellent tactical description of the fighting in and around Saigon during Tet. While many, many other books give a larger strategic sense to the whole Offensive, this book is very specific and useful to understanding what happened in SVN's capital. This book has another strength, too, in that its accounts of small-unit leaders in combat provide great lessons for future junior military leaders--especially for company command level and below. The one big drawback is that it has no tactical maps, just one big map of Saigon at the beginning of the book. Detailed maps would have been a great help while trying to decipher the textual descriptions of the fight. The author should take note of this for future revisions of this book.
What? No maps?.......2005-03-09
Any book, which covers combat and specific engagements, MUST have maps. Outside of the general map in the front of the book, there are none. This takes away from an excellent recounting of the Tet Offensive as it related to Saigon. The numerous quotes and straightforward writing style make this a very good read.
This is what you didn't learn in school............1999-05-18
Mr. Nolan is an incredible and invaluable cronicler of the Vietnam War. My father was at the Ton Son Nhut Airbase during the Tet. I now truly understand that battle; this is what you didn't learn in school. Since I read The Battle Of Saigon I have gone on to read The Magnificent Bastards and am in the proocess of reading Operation Buffalo. I strongly recomend reading Keith Nolan's books so you can learn what really happened in Vietnam. The Battle of Saigon is a must read. With respect, Kimberly E. Monahan

Nolan does justice to the brave airmen of Tan Son Nhut.......1997-11-24
This book gives credit to the men of the 377th Security Police Squadron for an incedible defense of Tan Son Nhut Air Base. There were enough heros to go around but Nolan has given the Air Force credit for a defensive masterpiece. This book was long over due.

Book Description
Itâs the late 1960s, and the rock â~nâ roll generation is coming of age in the oppressive shadow of an unpopular war. Tucked away in an army psychiatric ward, Jesse Danbar is hiding in self-induced amnesia, haunted by a tragedy shrouded in a âfearful darknessâ of guilt and self-recrimination and decorated by his country for combat heroism he knows nothing about. Under the nom de plume â~LaRueâ, Danbar writes curious poems that evolve into a memoir he hopes will illuminate his past and release him from its clutches. From the Battle of Michigan Avenue to student rebellion in Paris to Age of Aquarius California to military headquarters and secretly tender and also sinister places in Vietnam, to a not-so-safe haven on the New England coast, he battles to find himself and the will to live. The truths he learns about war and life and love transcend anything he could have imagined. They are as relevant today as in another time when a well-intentioned America lost its way and stumbled into tragedy. The author is donating his proceeds from the sale of LaRueâs Maneuvers to veteransâ causes.

This Work Should be Read.......2007-09-27
Jim, I really am impressed! This book is good - a substantial work. I enjoyed it very much. I do read a lot - but not very much fiction. When I do read a novel, I tend to be very critical.
I found the story plausible and with merit. I felt the characters developed nicely and simultaneously with the storyline. I don't know how much is based on your life experiences, but it appears there may be more than you acknowledged in Spain.
However, even if I didn't know you, I feel this book would and could stand alone.
I identified with the protagonist in more than a couple of his life experiences, although, obviously, not with his "in country" (Vietnam)experience. Yet, I believe we who are somewhat sensitive, compassionate, and continually questioning just about everything, are, like LaRue, most capable of a little self-induced psychosis. As my old boss (psychiatrist) used to say "there is a little sane in all of us."
Having benefited from LaRue's Maneuvers myself, I feel it will appeal to others as well. In fact, I feel this work should be read, and I'll recommend it to friends.
Obviously you paid attention in class; your work contained all the necessary ingredients to capture this reader's attention - although it did make me want to re-visit my existential philosophers.
Jim, I acknowledge the risk you took in writing LaRue's Maneuvers. It took a lot of reflection, insight and a willingness (need?) to explore intimate aspects of yourself and share them with the world.

A VietNam-Era Story Still So Relevant Today.......2007-09-25
James Gabbe has taken a theme (coming of age in the VietNam era) that we've all heard many variations on and made it new, real and touching. The device of moving back and forth in a timeline between two stories: that of the characters in their idealistic youth, and that of their later more complicated selves, is very successful. I was drawn in from the first page and didn't put it down till I reached the very believeable (and very satisfying) end. A great read just for it's compelling story, this book has added poignancy today as we as a country once again face the toll that a controversial war is taking on American youth.
A story of love, trust and devotion.......2007-08-30
Jim Gabbe's first novel is a wonderfully colorful narrative about a conflicted young soldier on the brink of manhood during a defining moment in both his and his country's history.
Set in the politically volatile Viet Nam era, Jesse Danbar, the novel's protagonist, moves from idealist to realist, and finally to activist in this emotional story. Love, both romantic and platonic, and the devotion and trust that love implies, are at the core of all Danbar's relationships. It is this love that keeps a damaged soul on track and, in the end, helps to save him. Because the book evolves as a narrative within a narrative, and there are multiple characters being developed, it takes several chapters for the parts to fall into place. When they do, the story takes off as Danbar finds his voice and ultimately his soul.
This novel invites each of us to ponder our own ideals and perhaps face personal questions with a new activism. When backed against a wall - what would you do?
Highly recommended.
LaRue's Maneuvers: A Richly Rewarding Read.......2007-08-03
This first novel by Jim Gabbe is a richly rewarding read for anyone who grew up during the tumultuous era of the Vietnam War and the societal convulsions of the 1960s. Who among us doesn't see pieces of themselves in Jesse Danbar, a.k.a. LaRue, the novel's protagonist, who walks a tortured path from youthful naivete to near-ruinous darkness and self-pity to enlightenment and self-discovery. "Life is a riddle wrapped in an enigma," muses LaRue, and by the end of this ambitious story we have a better idea why.
LaRue's Maneuvers is a coming of age story which ropes us in emotionally and never puts us down. LaRue becomes a foot solider in war he abhors, and the chilling images he conveys of a conflict that is both depraved and grotesque are as poignant today as they were back then. But the book's panoramic sweep goes well beyond Vietnam. We come face-to-face with the fragility of life, and why some individuals like LaRue are able to survive against all odds while others, like his close friend Tim McShane, succumb.
That conundrum is at the heart of this searching novel. In the end, LaRue comes to grips with a simple truth: no individual can save the world, or even his own soul, but "you have to dream and hope and love and try no matter what." LaRue indeed tries, and his cathartic journey - as brashly told by Gabbe - is what ultimately saves his life
A Strong Ambitious Novel.......2007-07-09
Jim Gabbe's novel is a complex narrative describing the hopes, confusion, and suffering of a group of friends coming of age at the time of the Viet Nam war. Though the trauma of combat plagues Gabbe's vet protagonist, the real "enemy" lies in the existential difficulties Gabbe's characters confront. While the protagonist heals himself through work, love, and art; others of the group are not so fortunate.
Gabbe's work represents a powerful effort to break through the stereotypes of 'hippies', 'vets', or 'straights' that have come to cloud our collective memory of those tumultuous years when society itself appeared to be disintegrating; a time during which so many of us found ourselves confronting our own demons after sterotypic enemy of "the establishment" had been defied.
Gabbe's novel recalls Robert Stone's early work, such as Dog Soldiers. While Stone's characters descended into violence and narcotics, however, Gabbe's are searching for answers, and occasionally finding them together before they are torn apart again. Despite the grim outcome for some, there is an underlying spirit of enterprise and optimism; although Gabbe's characters are rebels, there is something quintessentially American about them, and about the courageous, resilient, at times sprawling novel in which they reside.

Book Description
Ngo The Vinh was an ARVN Airborne Ranger M.D. during the Vietnam War. This author, winner of the 1971 National Prize for Literature for his novel The Green Belt, ironically was also penalized for his writing, when he was summoned to the court of law because of the title story of this collection: "The Battle of Saigon". This short story records the spiritual journey of a soldier who accepts sacrifice and hardship in the struggle for freedom of South Vietnam, a soldier who at the same time longs for a better society in the future. For the contents of this work, Ngo The Vinh was accused of using the press to circulate arguments that were deemed detrimental to public order, that militated against the discipline and fighting spirit of the army, a collective of which he himself was a member. Like the title story, the other eleven works in this collection, half of them created before and the other half after 1975, present war and post-war traumatic experiences and dreams from the perspective of Vietnamese Diaspora. "The Battle of Saigon
Customer Reviews:
FULL OF COMPASSION AND WITHOUT HATRED.......2005-02-28
Ever since before 1975, in the Vietnamese circle of literature and the arts, Ngo The Vinh has been a familiar name. To the circle of physicians, dentists and pharmacists in particular, he is a gifted writer admired by friends and colleagues, not only for his creative talent but also for his dignified personality and his way of thinking.
Ngo The Vinh is well-informed and highly discerning of the political situation and its development. Embedded in each of his works is a perspective on the country. Indeed, all the twelve stories in the collection "The Battle of Saigon" bear out that thematic focus. Fundamentally a very warm-hearted and upright person, he accepted and resigned himself to the position of one caught in a cross fire, all the while being full of compassion and without hatred. Both sides of the conflict seemed uncomfortable and distrustful of him.
The reason for their negative feeling was that while using politics for the background of his works, Ngo The Vinh let his conscience guide his presentation and his expression. It was precisely that pure, humane and compassionate conscience that unmasked dark political chicaneries which, like an animal hiding in the dark of night, when exposed to light would wriggle violently in disquieting protest.
My last impression is that Ngo The Vinh's prose is clear, his style highly polished, and his stories substantial. We should read him in order to understand why he has chosen to engage in writing and for what reason "The Battle of Saigon" makes its appearance overseas.

MARK FRANKLAND'S REVIEW.......2005-02-22
''The Battle of Saigon'' should interest, and move, anyone who is interested in the fate of Viet Nam. It may also surprise those who know little about the complex attitudes of the South Vietnamese people towards a war whose consequences still shape their lives.
Both during the fighting and after the voice of the South Vietnamese has often been ignored. As a foreign correspondent in Viet Nam during the war I was lucky enough to hear something of that voice, largely thanks to the persistence of my Vietnamese assistant. But he was a man of middle age with a large family and could not accompany me into the war zones where he might have helped me understand better the so often misunderstood ARVN soldiers. And it is the mind of the South Vietnamese soldier that particularly interests Ngo The Vinh.
In ''The Battle of Saigon'' he allows some of those soldiers to speak. The result is a judicious and humane portrayal of men at war which should concern an outside world that gave them so little thought at the time.
The author also deals with the political and moral dilemmas of the Vietnamese diaspora in North America, trapped between love of the country they were forced to abandon, the ruthlessness of its present communist rulers, and the sometimes painfully different habits of the Western culture they now live in.
Here, too, Ngo The Vinh remains shrewd yet sympathetic. And he shows the same qualities when writing about troubled American veterans who he accepts are as much the war''s victims as the Vietnamese themselves. This is a generous and perceptive book.

AN AUTHOR OF CONSCIENCE.......2005-02-21
Ngo The Vinh is a writer of dreams, or more precisely, an author of conscience. In my first novel, "The Nonconformist", I reserved almost a chapter to refer to Ngo The Vinh, as a token of gratitude. I called him `my conscience'. And now, more than twenty years later, as I contemplate the man and his latest works, I find that my opinions about him stay the same as before. He continues to be a socially-committed writer. Indeed, Ngo The Vinh remains the voice of heart and conscience.

THE BATTLE OF SAIGON HAS NEVER ENDED.......2005-02-20
It turns out that "The Battle of Saigon" has never ended and also will never end. Violent situations, cruel and brutal circumstances have exploded all over the South and spread to the North, to every place where live people of Vietnamese origins burdened with concealed tragedies. And to places where Ngo The Vinh more than once had, as a visionary, perceived heart-rending reality, from which he wrote The Green Belt and The Battle of Saigon, when both he and I were still very young. The reality also turns out to be that a writer possesses no power other than a sensitive heart that foresees in whole the Collective Pain. And from that time until now, among the Vietnamese, the Vietnam issue has remained as ever saturated with contradiction and opposition between people of all camps in connection to the war. Every one should read "The Battle of Saigon", re-read it in order to reduce to some extent the cruelty and ruthlessness of the battle prevailing at present in Saigon, even in Hanoi, in the Central Highlands, in each of us here, overseas Vietnamese residing in the United States of America.
