A nice collection of photographs.......2001-12-14

This is a collection of photographs taken of some of the most prominent figures in the 1920's and 30's. The photographs, for the most part are clear and quite vivid, but there are a few that are slightly blurry and grainy, but still manage to retain their luster considering the time period in which they were taken. The book has rare photos of writers, artists, dancers, actors and athletes. Some of the people featured are Marlene Dietrich, Claude Monet, Anita Loos, Greta Garbo, Calvin Coolidge, Lillian Gish, Cole Porter, Agnes DeMille, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Helen Keller, H.G. Wells and many others. While there are quite a few pictures of movie actors, the photographs of the novelists, artists, dancers and musicians outnumber them slightly. Overall, a good collection of photographs. Also recommended is "Hollywood Glamor Portraits, 145 photos of stars 1926-1949" and "Movie Star Portraits of the Forties" both by John Kobal (editor). These books feature stunning and breathtaking photos of many of the most popular movie stars of Hollywood's golden age.

Okay, I haven't actually read the book , but I skimmed it in the book store, and it made me want to look it up here at Amazon. That MUST count for something. The topic is a needed one for this generation. One negative: no pictures.

I, like the person two reviews down (presuming I get published here), want to review a reviewer.

So many reviews that I've read have either

a) been entirely (or almost entirely) uninformative ("great book, I really enjoyed it" - what does that actually tell me in a quantifiable/objective sense?)

b) been clearly written by i) the author ii) a friend of the author iii) a member of the author's family iv) the author's agent (etc)

c) been badly written in some or several categories of language (grammar, vocabulary, spelling etc)

or d) "other" (this is my get-out clause so I don't have to write too much more here because the film is about to start)

I concur with the aforementioned reviewer's comments.

Question to the owners of this 'complete idiot's guide' brand (along with the dummies etc brands) - what brand quality and recognition assurances do you feel are important in building and maintaining a customer belief and faith base? (sorry, been reading the reviews of too many "MBA-in-a-day" book reviews.

NOTE: I rated this as a 3, to avoid unfairly affecting the score of the book.

CLOSE: to try to get myself a 'yes this was useful' may I just give you a quick tip: if you consider reading about a subject from any of these dummies-idiots-morons-clueless-doughnuts, have a look at the equivalent version in the other brands' books, there is a tendency for the books to be either great or hamburger meat, and if one brand is unlucky enough to have the H-meat version, one of the others happens to have snagged a better writer. Worth a look.

Sorry - I don't have a review --but I was reading the one you have listed -- and it seems to me that if you want to sell a book about the relationships between men and women -- you might want to put one up front in which the man knows how to spell "subtle"-- it's not "suttle", for Pete's sake! ..maybe it's a typo -- but, by reflection, it makes the author of the
book look, to saythe least, overly simplistic.

From a guy's point of view the whole book seemed to fit with what i felt and viewed and hope the same goes for the women.

It might seem to state some of the obvious or suttle things in life.. but sometimes we just dont notice them. GREAT book.

This is a really fun book to read. Its full of short essays on a variety of topics that we often wonder about. Its broken into a couple of chapters and a few of the topics in each: Birdwatching (with topis like definition of a birder, magic moments with the birds, tools of the trade), birds in the backyard (weird nesting sites, housing crunch for birds, pesticides and birds, a striking problem), basic bird biology (can birds smell, how birds beat the winter chill, why do birds change their feathers, do birds really mate for life), Birds we've come to love (bluejays, why hummingbirds hum, redpolls, canada goose)

That's just a little of what is in here. Its just such a neat book, and an easy read. You can read an essay then put the book down and go do things then come back and pick up another essay. I really enjoy it and plan to give it as gifts next christmas

This book is an insightful look into the world of birds. Each chapter or section is short and easy to read. Very enjoyable and fun to read, while at the same time, very factual. If you have ever wondered why a bird did a certain thing, or which is the best bird feeder to buy, this book is just the ticket!
