How to Cut Drawings on Scratchboard

Does Exactly What it Says.......2001-11-18

If you've ever wanted to learn scratchboard (scraperboard in the UK) this slender book is a great place to start. The explanations are clear and detailed. Different types of scratch marks on different scratchboard surfaces are shown with plenty of illustrations so you can see what all the marks look like in finished pieces. There are chapters discussing light, shading and blending techniques, tonal values, patterns, use of mechanical aids such as french curves, etc. One of the last chapters of the book shows a gallery of scratchboard art.

I particularly liked the fact this book demonstrates a lot of different subjects. I've noticed that scratchboard art (at least on the Internet) seems to be dominated by wildlife art so it is refreshing to see other subjects shown here. The only subject this book doesn't cover which some of my other scratchboard books do is the use of color. However, I am trying to grade this book fairly by considering when it was first published - 1949. At that time color wasn't as much of a concern - particularly for a little book that was geared as an introduction to the medium. By today's standards I think it rates a 4 simply because there are other scratchboard books available that also include discussions of color. In 1949 I would've said it rated a 5. It also has the virtue of being more affordable than any other book on scratchboard I've yet found (and I have quite a few in my collection - including some that are out-of-print). If you are thinking of trying out scratchboard or are just a scratchboard fan this little book is a worthwile addition to any collection.

This book by Annette Harper is one of its kind in the market.It explains the various ODBC drivers by a comparitive study which gives us a very good idea as to which driver we should use.
The book is very helpful for people who are writing Crystal Reports against Oracle Database.

The New Uprooted explores the relationship between the single mother and her social and physical environments. Mulroy examines how demographically diverse single mothers (in terms of race, class, marital status, urban or suburban location, educational level, and employment status) experience dual roles as sole family breadwinner and sole resident parent in the 1990s environment of scarce resources. Families headed by single mothers have become a unit of social concern not only because they represent a changing family form, but because their economic marginality threatens a downward spiral toward the instability of urban poverty. The mothers' key issues are the high cost of housing their families in relation to low wages, irregular or nonpayment of child support, public welfare benefit levels, and the effects of domestic violence. This is an excellent book! This book and the startling statistics really demonstrate the struggles of young women facing the challenges of raising children alone and in poverty.

A socio-historical and ethnographic account of pioneering Anglophone eastern Caribbean women who signed up to be migrant domestics in the Caribbean oil lands. This book provides an explanation of the migration culture of the Caribbean by injecting gender into traditional labor migration theories. It views labor migration from the female migrant women's perspective as a major entrepreneurial activity for those who refuse to be fazed by foreign nation-state boundaries. Aruba, the site of a giant U.S.-owned oil refinery, became a major participant in supplying Western Europe's and North America's insatiable oil needs during the decade of the 1940s and World War II. Therefore, the island is presented as the prototype of a 20th-century industrial worksite that attracted the female migrant labor flow. The book argues that this female migration created a long-term relationship between black female migrant workers from the eastern Caribbean and the "non-black" middle-class households on Aruba. In addition, wage-earning efforts of migrant labor in the oil enclave expanded and intensified female intra-regional petty trading activities and stimulated the interests of eastern Caribbean women in new labor sites outside of the Caribbean.

Too often creativity is believed to be synonomous with artistic interest and ability. MadGregor expands this definition and explains why creativity is important for everyone. Her book is full of easy-to-learn, practical exercises and games that are fun. I highly recommend it to parents, teachers and anyone who wants to develop their creativity.

Stunningly clear writing!.......2002-09-30

This is the first book I ever picked up dealing the Soviet Army (after World War II) and I was expecting to be at sea with political, organizational and weapons systems I knew nothing about (though I wanted to learn more on). Quite the opposite - disguised as a fictional Soviet Assault into West Germany, this is actually an extremely clear and concise primer on Soviet war making capabilities during the 1990s. The information is fascinating, the format (fictional encounter followed by the rationale and research behind it) is engaging, but the real gem here is Steven Zaloga's writing style! It manages to both not presume knowledge of the subject and at the same time quickly explain and make clear very complex issues. Did I mention how engaging his brief characterizations in the fictional segment were?

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to add the rest of his works to my Wishlist!

In this book Professor Katz discusses the most important topics in Judaism today. Besides containing papers on Franz Rosenzweig and Abraham Joshua Heschel, Katz discusses the role of racial antisemtism in Germany after WWI; outlines and analyzes the issues of comparing the Holocaust to other historical events, such as the mass witch burnings of the middle ages, black slavery, the decimation of North American Indians, the Nazi assaults on Gypsies and homosexuals, and Polish and Ukranian losses during WWII.

Katz discusses the various ideas concerning the uniqueness of the Holocaust, and more theological responses to it.

Not enough photographs!.......2007-02-23

This is by far the weakest entry in this series of books. The problem is simple - there aren't enough photos!! The Crimson-collared Grosbeak is a good example. This is a sexually dimorphic species that is a very rare visitor to Texas. The book presents you with only one poor photo of a female. However, the page has room for two more standard-sized photographs!
There aren't too many identification issues within this group of birds, so the need for this guide is not very great to begin with. Add to that the fact that the book doesn't present enough photographs, and you have a book that can easily be skipped.
