Illustrated 2000 Review.......2003-04-06

I have had a couple of months now to review this book. It is very detailed in many construction techniques. There is a senario for almost every project a contractor or dedicated homeowner could do. The information in the book can be overwhelming, however, with some time to become familiar with the book, it becomes easier to follow.

As the scientific world hails the completion of the first working draft of the human genome map, design professionals can hail the completion of Author Terry L. Patterson's work on understanding the 2000 International Building Code.

As a design professional with the responsibility to interpret and understand the numerous building codes and countless amendments, the methods of code research can be exhausting and ill productive. The current format and language used in most building codes lack the framework and illustrations that are needed to join the terms and definitions into an understandable and correct conclusion.

Patterson's purpose is to provide an aid to understanding the 2000 International Building Code. The handbook is a success by providing the necessary framework and illustrations that aids the reader to understanding the building code's intent as it relates to real projects.

The price of $125.00 may seem a little steep at first, but the cumulative time saved by using the handbook will more than pay for itself many times over.

Patterson's work includes the research and input by many design professionals, students and building code officials. The collective efforts by many have produced a handbook that is a must for all design professionals. As all design and construction officials know, a complete and accurate interpretation of the building codes is never complete. In the Preface, Patterson asks the reader to provide useful feedback that can be used for future editions. With the continued combined efforts of many, this Handbook has promise and will continue to be a useful tool for all.

Many thanks to Mr. Terry L. Patterson for helping the design professional to understanding the "genome map" of the 2000 International Building code.

This is a very witty (and sick) collection of cartoons about ways to commit suicide. This is the perfect gift for a miserable friend who needs to snap out of it. I lost this book about a year ago and I can't believe its out of print now. We need more of Andrew Christie's wicked mind to keep us sane.

Not only soldiers fight in wars.......2006-05-07

What did I know about the Battle of the Bulge before I read this book? Well, not very much, even though I read about war and warfare all the time. Watching Band of Brothers I got the impression that Easy Company more or less saved the day for everybody involved in the Allied offensive, and well, that was it. No more Hitler and no more WWII.

Not so. And that's quite clear after reading The Unknown Dead. However, I didn't learn that much about the war per se, even though quite a few pages talk about different battles and offensives and personal experiences et cetera. What I did learn, however, was that there were more people on the battlefield than just the Allied forces and the stubborn Germans. There were regular people present as well, and the sufferings these people who happened to be in the middle of the fighting were, to say the least, extremely horrific. This becomes very clear throughout the book, and Schrijvers does an amazing job telling the stories about these somewhat forgotten people. From time to time it might feel a little repetitive, but then again, the sufferings they had to endure WERE repetitive. And the only way to make the reader aware of how it really was is to tell it all, so this isn't really much of an issue.

However, what I liked the most about the book was the honesty, or in other words, the fact that Schrijvers never hesitates to - sometimes in quite gruesome detail - describe scenarios where not just the Germans and especially the Waffen SS and Gestapo executed people in cold blood or committed other mindless atrocities. The GIs too could be ruthless killers and totally lacking any sense of moral or discipline in the ways they interacted with the horrified civilians. This might be extremely uncomfortable to some, but hey, that's the way it was, and if you cannot deal with the fact that not all Allies were good and honest heroes, then the problem is with your look on reality, and not with Schrijvers' book.

All in all The Unknown Dead is as interesting as it is necessary, and I really do hope that Peter Schrijvers decides to write other books such as this one about other important battles in the WWII.

Excellent a must read.......2006-03-13

This book is a must read for everyone intrested in the Battle of the Bulge! It is about a "forgotten" fact of this battle, the suffering of the civilians. Untill now in every book about this Battle, hardly any information can be found about the Belgian population and how they suffered. Most historians and writers wrote untill now that there were only very limited casualties among the civilians. This book proves that this is not correct! The Belgian people did not only suffer from the Germans in this Battle, also due to the military action of the American and British armed forces many civilians died! Bombings by the American forces caused terrible suffering. In this book - which is a must read - we get another picture of the Battle of the Bulge and the suffering is has caused.

It is seldom that one comes across a book as thoroughly researched as Coronation Wings. The book's focus is 2 hours at RAF Odeham in 1952 but it covers the months of planning, rehersals, staging points, inbound and outbound routings, timing and logistics of moving over a thousand aircraft through a narrow corridor in less than an hour. Diagrams show where each aircraft was located in the static display, fly-past formations are sketched with each aircraft identified and, where known, the name of the pilot. The text is backed-up with literally hundreds of pictures, some obviously official but most seem to have been taken by people at the Review. The only criticism I have is that there were aircraft in the review from air forces other than the Royal Air Force and this doesn't come out in the title, although the RAF certainly had the predominant part. Very highly recommended if only as a reference on researching.

A brief, fictionalized account of the lifecycle of the Sandhill Crane, this book, written by the noted zoologist and wildlife author, Paul A. Johnsgard, is an excellents means of introducing oneself to this magnificent species. The hardcover edition, published in 1981, is small in format, smaller than the average tradepaperback, and is printed in brown ink. A number of illustrations by the author are included. Overall, a very delightful book.
