Filmed along the banks of New York's Hudson and London's Thames rivers, Burki's project investigates the river as a place of passage, creating film sequences that lie somewhere between documentary and fiction. The film's subjects are the people who live and work along the banks and the places where people pass by the water's edge and wait. Over 80 people were filmed along the two waterfronts; in New York at the Staten Island Ferry, Battery Park, Pier 26 in Tribeca and Pier 84 in Clinton; in London at the Tate Gallery, Tilbury Docks and National Theatre. In London the work is shown on the National Theatre Lyttleton flytower rising 200 feet above the Thames. In New York City the film is shown along the Holland Tunnel New York River Ventilation Building, reaching 930 feet out into the Hudson. Flirting with documentary while questioning it, Time After, Time Along, The River presents an intensely intimate portrait of its subjects. By slowing down the images and projecting them on a vast scale, every detail of every face and place is revealed.

The publication's text contains excerpts of Burki's interviews with her subjects. Responses to her questions about the river and how it effects their lives reveal wonderful variations in knowledge and experience. Dozens of full-page color stills, close-ups and portraits, give a sense of the sheer size of the projections. The accompanying CDs contain the entire "soundtrack" to the monumental oeuvre: the recorded conversations, memories and thoughts of the participants. Includes 2 audio CDs.

The not instant story of instant photography.......2007-01-27

Across America and the developed world the name Polaroid remains familiar. Over a certain age the product identification of Polaroid Land Camera has recognition. But among that older group, probably not one in ten will know that the Land part of the product name was the name of the man who invented the cameras. More to the point, the man who envisioned the concept of instant photography and worked for decades to invent instant film. Who founded a company during the Depression unlike any other in America. Who was second only to Edison in the number of patents he held. Who was a true American icon.

Edwin Land played a large part in his own anonymity. He valued his individual privacy only slightly less than his family's, about which he was adamant. He sought the limelight, or at least accepted it, only to promote his inventions at crucial moments.

Peter Wensberg tells this sometimes technical story with the skill of a novelist, with a structure that evokes from the reader a genuine excitement about a man who not so much discovered the future as he did imagine it, and then invented it. Wensberg compellingly gets us inside Land, to whatever extent that was possible, to illustrate a true genius driven to go forward, leaving behind the beaten path, or indeed any path at all.

In Land we see the familiar pattern of genius, of people like Linus Pauling or Richard Feynman - an early identification of their quest, a self confidence both underlying and overriding, and the implicit knowledge that the quest will not be had within convention. Just as important, Wensberg gives an account of Land's technology that illustrates the decades of hard work that go into the consumer technologies we take for granted.

Land, though often reticent and inaccessible, inspired men, and very early on women. He caused people to leave good jobs for the opportunity to work for his unique company. He got from people far more than they thought they could give, and often in an astonishingly short time.

Land pioneered fair wages and equal treatment at a time when people would take any job at any pay under any conditions. His defense work in World War II saved countless lives. He committed his company to diversity long before that notion reached a level of political necessity.

This is a story about an American at his best.

Usefull, maybe too simple.......2007-01-31

Actually, when buying this book I expected some advices and examples, but the book is "examples only". Which is not necessary bad, but... I still expected more "meat".
Anyway, the book is useful, I used it more than once when I needed to write some important message and had no time nor inspiration to make it simple and to the point. Of course, in some cases you have to be careful and have in mind that some examples are applicable only for United States, but not for Europe too (i.e. some motivational letters for job applications in Europe could sound more funny than serious, but...), but even in that situation, I guess it's better with this book than without it.
In general, content is useful, it saves time, but you still have to think about what, and whom are you writing to. But, I guess that you should do it anyway.

A wonderful book in journal form.......2002-11-12

I purchased this book two years after my premature baby was born. Reading and working through this journal helped my deal with issues relating to my baby's birth and subsequent hospital stay. It is an excellent place to record feelings and emotions that at times are too painful to express in any other way. I highly recommend this book to parents of premature infants.

Giving birth to a premature baby is an experience that was often not expected, is overwhelming, and introduces parents to a whole new world of hospitals, procedures, and short and long-term complications for their infant. This journal provides parents with a place to structure all of the complicted and often overwhelming feelings brought up by having a premie baby. It highlights common experiences and provides signficant room for parents to journal in response to pertinent questions. It does a nice job of providing the necessary information and structure to help parents cope with their situation.

Even Better!.......2005-02-25

This is an update of the book written some years ago. It is even better than the first. It is cheaper than the earlier version too!!!! Definitely worth it.

Extensive Update.......2003-07-05

Jenkins released the first version of this book about 6 years ago. This is a major update to that book. Although it is only 4 pages longer (and printed on MUCH better paper), it contains a lot more information and many more photos. In essence the original book has been condensed into the first 70 pages or so, resulting in about 30 pages of additional information. This is now a very detailed account of the Me 262 project. The only disappointment is that the color section (now 8 pages long) contains very few 194x images. Still, if you are interested int he Me 262, this is a good addition to your library.
