The promotional materials that came with this book said, "Surprisingly, money DOES grow on trees!" I've seen a lot of gardening how-to books over the years, and this is one of the first to approach the topic not only from an aesthetic or problem solving point of view, but also from an economic one. The book was interesting and eye-opening and it will certainly be helpful to landscapers, architects, and, most specifically, homeowners. It is well thought out, clearly illustrated, and easy to follow; the information will help people to avoid common errors while giving them ideas for how to landscape with an eye to increasing value.

                  Book Description

Once a year, the managers of public companies have to fling open the doors and let the owners in — whether they want to or not. A Weekend with Warren Buffett and Other Shareholder Meeting Adventures is a humorous, informative business-related travelogue that looks at how companies in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia treat their investors during the brief period when the welcome mat is out. It’s an Average Joe Investor’s search for shareholder democracy and an occasional free lunch.
Companies featured include Berkshire Hathaway, Citigroup, Dow Jones, Dupont, eBay, Gannett, Google, Hawaiian Electric, Hershey, MGM Grand, Microsoft, Otter Tail, Playboy, Starbucks, Tootsie Roll, Wal-Mart and Walt Disney, among others.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars Informative, Entertaining & Fun.......2007-10-17

This is one of those rare books that has insightful information and some good laughs along the way. Mr. Cepuch's style is fresh and direct. He quickly draws you into each shareholder adventure with a keen eye for detail and a sense of humor. I enjoyed it thoroughly and came away with the satisfying feeling that I'd gotten an insider's view.

                  2 out of 5 stars A Very Repetitive Book.......2007-09-26

This is a book based on a gimmick. As such, the novelty soon wears off and tedium prevails. Cepuch's accounts of the meetings are all the same: a catalog of the free food and knicknacks, some mildly interesting facts about the company you may never have heard of, and a description of the Q&A session. The author has trouble filling the book with the promised adventures and at points he wastes our time with stories about his travel arrangements and the difficulty of doing laundry away from home.

Reading the first half of the book suffices to learn its secrets: A shareholder meeting may be a useful source of investment information, but only if shareholders pose intelligent questions and the directors give forthright responses. This rarely happens.

The Berkshire Hathaway meeting is one of a kind, but there is plenty written about it elsewhere. If you're really looking for a weekend with Warren Buffett, spend next Saturday reading Buffett's letters to his shareholders which are available from the Berkshire Hathaway website. They're much more informative and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Who would have thought???????.......2007-06-04

Who would have thought that a book about attending shareholder meetings could be so entertaining? My husband and I both read the book and found ourselves laughing loudly throughout the many stories. We both thoroughly enjoyed all of the shareholder meetings profiled and even looked forward to reading the report card at the end of each profile. Having known and worked with the author for so many years, I had visual images of Randy at the meetings in my head while reading and continually making me laugh. Great job Randy Cepuch, we loved the book. Your ability to take a somewhat boring subject and make it so interesting is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Investing from a different place.......2007-05-15

Mr Cepuch's look at the alchemy of investing using the annual meeting as a measurement tool is unique in my 35 years of investment experience. Forget price/earnings ratios, sales, expenses etc. rather look to the way they treat their shareholders on the day they have their annual review. His comparisons, insights and evaluations add "one more arrow to the investor's quiver" in making buy and sell decisions. Very refreshing reading.

5 out of 5 stars not to miss.......2007-05-15

After reading this book, I can honestly say Diane Craver speaks from the heart about the good and bad moments she has experienced with her family throughout her children's lives. Sharing her own story is her GREATEST gift, and Diane's strength will certainly help those of us who are struggling with mixed emotions about the birth of a child who has special needs. Diane's energy is depicted through the many creative activities listed in Chapter's Six and Eight, and yet the blessings she discusses in Chapter Nine will guide any parent into knowing they are truly blessed with the love of their child! Reading this book will make you laugh, make you cry, and will be a comfort to you when you need it most!

Burying The Past: Making Peace And Dong Justice After Civil Conflict is a highly recommended compendium of essays drawn together by Nigel Biggar (Professor of Theology at the University of Leeds) and focusing the problems of establishing democracy after a transition from brutal, oppressive regimes -- and often violent civil, prolonged conflict. The problem is to reconcile the populace so that reprisals and revenge does not undermine or subvert the newly establishing democratic principles, procedures, and compromises. Very highly recommended reading for students of political science and international studies, here are to be found outstanding contributions by Donald Shriver, Jean Bethke Elshtain, Tuomas Forsberg, Martha Minow, Hugo van der Merwe, Marie Smyth, Brandon Hamber, Alexandra Barahona de Brito, Rachel Seider, Charles Villa-Vicencio, Stef Vandeginste, Terence McCaughey, and Nigel Biggar.

                                              Book Description

Marc Basset has a well-deserved reputation as a pitiless restaurant critic. When he writes a devastating review of a celebrated restaurant, the chef commits suicide, roasting himself in his own fan-assisted oven, with Basset's review pasted to the door. Suddenly Basset is moved to do something he has never done before: apologize. Startled by the widow's forgiveness and absolution, he feels unexpectedly euphoric. In an effort to maintain this newfound state of bliss, he decides to gorge himself on contrition by apologizing to every person he has ever done wrong.

                                              And that's just the beginning.

After a series of virtuoso expressions of regret, word of Basset's mollifying power spreads, and he is tapped to become Chief Apologist for the United Nations. His job is to travel the globe in his own Gulfstream V private jet, apologizing for everything from colonialism through exploitation to slavery. It is a role that brings him fame, wealth, and access to a lot of very good chocolate. But in a world overdosing on emotion, does Marc Basset really have the stomach to become the sorriest man in history?

Built of delicate layers of heinous crime, forgiveness, and outrageous gastronomy, Jay Rayner's hilarious new novel is an arch comedy of modern appetite and etiquette.

                                              4 out of 5 stars Who's eating crow now!.......2007-04-02

I enjoyed "Eating Crow" more for its absurdity than anything else. After all who could have come up with the notion that there should be a chief apologist to the UN! What was his job? To appease dictators and tyrants around the globe! Talk about laughing out loud, after all who could have dreamed up such a theme?

Spin forward to 2007 and we find the British Government seriously apologizing for the slave trade of centuries ago. Compensation seems next on the list if Archbishop Rowan Williams to be taken seriously. Perhaps the best record of the slave trade is recorded in the Bible - are we to expect now that the Egyptians apologise to the Jews? Perhaps the Christians will apologise for the Crusades? So it seems I was wrong as this notion of a chief apologist is not that far fetched. Couple this with the fact that the UK is the most spied on nation in the world and Jay Rayner is elevated to join the ranks of Orwell and Huxley in proving that the absurd can so easily become a reality!

4 out of 5 stars Different and quite hilarious.......2007-02-13

Definitely different than other books out there with quite a lot of humor. Mostly believable and the food descriptions are intense! I am not usually in to too much description, but this dose was perfect and complete. I would recommend this title to anyone and everyone.

                                              4 out of 5 stars Crying wolf!.......2006-04-18

If this book isn't you say wolf too many times. He gets crazy apologizing and finds himself all wrapped up in making apologies. But will they come to mean nothing?

I enjoyed this book without a doubt. Highly entertaining, lots of wonderful scrumptious food descriptions. However I agree, the book did leave me kind of like is that all?

I look forward to other books by this author and I want to read more about all the chocolate foods!

                                              4 out of 5 stars A delightful foodie frolic.......2006-01-09

I really enjoyed this book. I'm a repressed foodie (with small kids, one doesn't get to actually experience a lot of great restaurants), and the meal descriptions were Ruth Reichl restaurant review worthy. It took a turn I didn't expect plotwise, with the UN business. Very clever and sometimes laugh out loud funny. I would definately look at this writer's next book.

4 out of 5 stars Funny premise and start, but not a strong conclusion.......2005-01-05

This is definitely worth a read. It's short, under 300 pages, and if you have some time to kill, it's light enough to whip through in a few hours. The story and main character (Marc) get off to a very funny start. However, about mid-way through the book, about the time the Marc gets his job as chief apologizer to the world, the humor is harder to find. On the whole, it's completely worth reading though.
A couple of other minor issues that might bug some readers: if you aren't a foodie, the pages long descriptions of individual meals and foods could put you off. They're easy enough to skim through after the first few and after all, the author is a professional food critic so he's writing what he knows. American readers beware, some of the British slang might throw you. And, if there's any serious flaw it's that I didn't find either of Marc's two female love interests to be very believable or complete characters. They seem to just exist in the story for Marc's benefit, and don't stand very well on their own. The author put more effort into describing some of the chocolates in the story than he did development of the girlfriends.
But it's definitely still a funny book and worth reading. I found it a very entertaining balance to some weightier non-fiction I'm struggling through.

                                              Book Description

Birds have long been considered the archetypal featherheads, beautiful but dumb. Members of the crow family (corvids), however, appear to have powers of abstraction, memory, and creativity that put them on a par with many mammals--even higher primates. Though it's not as long as I would like, the pictures are fabulous and the information is great. It's a must-read for anybody who likes corvids.

5 out of 5 stars Was that Aunt Rose?.......2006-07-23

A good part of my childhood was spent on an upstate New York farm. We had lots of corn and many other vegetables; many birds - and one extra-special crow. He quickly adopted us and often spoke to my uncle and me by name in my aunt's voice and exact intonations. The vegetable farm, barn, shop-garage, and chicken coop were at the top of a fairly steep hill and the house was at the bottom. Aunt Rose ruled the household; the crow ruled the farm area. Sometimes he would deliver small things up or down the hill. My uncle and I never tired of his antics and wisdom. We were happy to do the work orchestrated by the crow and I was ready for J. Allen Boone's work years in advance.

Bird Brains may not be the most scientific or even accurate book, but I bring it out any time I find a potentially interested visitor. Even now where I live in a fairly rural area of New York City - there are crows among my friends. They live in close quarters with several Cardinal families, near blue jays, and many smaller birds in a huge oak tree and smaller peripheral trees. Crows are gregarious and adjustable. They would no doubt be pleased with this book and see no reason to find fault.

If the book were about humans, would be as picky as we are about crows being correctly represented? Do we expect all humans to be alike? Equally smart with similar talents?

I must have bought this book without reading the reviews. I wanted savvy text; I opened the package and found a coffee table book. And on the coffee table it will be stored. Four stars as a coffee table book. Two for content.

It is a quick read. A few steps up from a Reader's Digest level. I did learn from it.

4 out of 5 stars buy it for the pictures, not the text.......2005-12-23

This book consists of about half text and half glossy pictures of corvids (ravens, crows, magpies, and jays). The pictures are beautiful, and range from "posed" shots of individual birds to some action shots of corvids interacting with other animals. Savage is from Saskatchewan, so the pictures show these birds in all four seasons. Some additional pictures come from Europe or Siberia.

The text holds the book together but is not the focus of the book. Her central argument is that corvids are really smart, and she provides some anecdotes to that effect. The evidence is one-sided, but it's nonetheless true that corvids are smart. That said, the text is really beside the point in this beautiful book. If you want to know more about how smart these birds are, read Bernd Heinrich.

In short, it's a coffee-table book in soft cover. The pictures really are beautiful, and the text is beside the point. It seems unfair to criticize it, as some other reviewers do, for being superficial.

                                                  Book Description

In no other group of perching birds has evolution produced such a degree of variation as in the 120 species of crows and jays that inhabit the world today. They range from the tiny Hume's Ground-jay of the steppe-highlands of Tibet to the huge Thick-billed Raven of the mountains of Ethiopia. Some are exceedingly beautiful in color, grace, and form; others are sinister in appearance. Some appear in tales of mythology and superstition; others are merely regarded as agricultural pests. The great majority, however, remain largely unknown, coming into contact with humans mainly when their specialized habitats are destroyed. Over 20 species are now regarded as internationally endangered and some may disappear before we have a chance to learn much about them. This guide details all species of corvid, combining Steve Madge's authoritative text with 30 superb color plates by Hilary Burn.

The text treats each species in depth, summarizing identification techniques and concisely reviewing all aspects of corvid behavior, distribution, population, and taxonomy. The color plates depict all 120 species, with each plate accompanied by an informative caption page containing color world-distribution maps and summaries of the criteria required to identify the species. Some of these, including the Banggar Crow, Mesopotamian Crow, and Flores Crow have never before been illustrated.

Crows and Jays is both a source of scientifically accurate information and a user-friendly identification guide. It seeks to provide everyone, from birdwatchers to biologists, with a greater understanding of the lives of these fascinating yet very complex birds.

Though this book does seem to list every conceivable type of crow and jay and give you some basic information about each, it is so very unreadable. The lovely pictures are at the front, separated from the information on each species. The information section is barely written in sentences, and is more of a badly-printed list of fragmentary facts than anything else. Save your money; this book is not worth it.
