I ordered this book as a gift for a metal sculpture friend of mine, who figuratively puts David Smith on a pedestal when it comes to sculpture. Owning a vast number of art/art history books myself, I was very disappointed in the quality of the photographs that accompany the text. The book has a nice layout, and the quality of the photography of the plates is wonderful. The B/W photographs feel as if they were just lifted from an earlier edition. It's a poor way to start out the book. One might never get to the color plates in the back, after viewing the photography in the front of the book, and placing it back on the shelf. If the sculptures could have been re-photographed with the same care as was taken with the plates, it would have enhanced the book dramatically.

Brilliant and weird. Just the kind of weird that makes you take a second look. Artful and poignant. I think Exxon Mobil is run by the "Shaan". This is the kind of gritty, outsider art that is missing in comics and graphic novels today.

... but barely comprehensible. But this is Druillet, so we let some things slide.

Sloane died, and has ben entombed for ten years in a golden sarcophagus. You've already guessed that little stuff like that won't slow him down. His casket is transported, for reasons obscure, and a magical woman appears within his sealed transport. She revives him with a kiss (hint: this isn't a kids' story). He wreaks the usual havoc, and sails off into one setting sun or another.

But you weren't reading this for the plot. Druillet's stories are just vehicles for Druillet's are, which is truly fantastic. It lacks some of the frenzied detail of his 70s/80s work, but is incredible nonetheless. His sense of majesty, mysticism, and evil is overwhelming, and pervades every panel. The "Dark Demon" is the simplest of the drawings here, technically, but the most evocative.

Druillet's work isn't for kids or for tender sensibilities. It is, however, some of the best sequential artwork ever drawn.

Natural History Essays By A Master.......2003-03-06

The next best thing to going out into Nature, is to grab Herschel Raney by the hand and take an armchair trip out there. Raney has a way with words as well as dragoflies. His trips will inspire you to spring out of that chair and get out there to see what is still there to see. Even the front lawn of suburbia can hold surprises for you. Oh by the way, take a child with you when you go. Grandkid or your own child, they look at things differently than adults, you will be glad you did!
