Morris Lapidus designed more than 500 retail stores, hotels, and apartments during his 60-year career as an architect. The work, chronicled in his new autobiography, "Too Much Is Never Enough", is a testament to his roots in set and costume design for theater and to the glamour he brought to the most basic buildings and interiors. In an age when appropriation was not the rage, Lapidus pioneered this signature element of post-modernism, combining details of French Provincial and Italian Romanesque architecture with whimsical ornament and an unrestrained use of color. Lapidus' writing, while a bit self-aggrandizing, is sweet and surprisingly engaging., making the book a delight all the way around.

Standing on Eden Roc.......1998-05-21

I enjoyed this frank autobiography of an interior designer and architect who gave people what they thought a glamorous resort should look like instead of what the architectural establishment dictated. Lapidus recounts his experiences as an immigrant child in New York through to his grudging acceptance as a the leader of a new architectural style. I particularly liked his acknowledgment that his career was full of sudden and random opportunities that he fully seized. I also enjoyed a story from his early days when he took joking at his expense by senior management and used it to open a new opportunity.

Lapidus is not Howard Roark, the icy Rand architect hero. He gave is clients what they wanted or, more accurately, gave his clients what he thought people would want.

The photographs are OK. They are enough to illustrate a visual artists autobiography. A photographic fine art book of Lapidus' work would be a nice adjunct to this book, though.

An excellent biography of a misunderstood architect........1997-07-27

Many people had not appreciated the work of Morris Lapidus - until now. In the late 1980s, European students started to recognize his work, and now the excitement has spread to America. This autobiography from 1979 is very well-written and easy to read. Mr. Lapidus explains many of his early childhood experiences and how they later came to play an important role in his architecture. He tells how his first encounters with light and color would influence his designs over and over again, as well as how his designs changed over the years, and how he was panned by fellow architects and critics. He retired bitterly in the 1980s, but now, well into his 90s, with the resurgence of interest in him and his work, he has come out of retirement (as much as one in his 90s can!) and is contributing new designs to the local Miami Beach area, where he now resides

Well done and informative book.......2002-01-18

I really have been enjoying Max Ferguson's Digital Darkroom book. For me, the book has been a well-written exploration of both the capabilities of Photoshop and digital tools, and more importantly, getting an image to photo. You know, composition, artistry, all the good stuff that great photographers are thinking about when they set up their shots.

Photography is changing these days, don't you think? I still love the film world, but have fully embraced the digital world. If you're going that route too, then this book is well worth your time to spend some time with. It's a quality book, spend some quality time with it.

In many ways, the ability to digitally manipulate your images potentially causes a fundamental shift in the way that you set your shots up, because you know that the ability of your downstream digital processing is much more powerful. Not so many books approach this thinking process as well as this book.

The CD is nice, it will get you started if you're a beginnner. It's a good reference beyond that. I believe somebody in an earlier review got worked up about having technical problems with the CD...I think you should just take the CD as more of a reference. The real information presented is in the book, not the CD.

I've been getting, and no doubt will continue to get, a lot of good information from this book.

(...)First. The CD contains a whole lot of Adobe liscenced demo software for Mac and PC.It would take you hours to download. I know I downloaded it. That's good value.
Second. I'm Mac based so the Director files are Mac based. Sorry about this but there is only so much room on a CD. I have PC emulation on my Mac. So no problem. My Mac can read PC stuff. Sorry it doesn't work the other way. Moan to Bill Gates.
Third.I can't include all the images from the book. They aren't my copyright. Most importantly if you are going to make images with this fabulous software, how about taking your own pictures. I thought that was the idea.

(...)The unsolicited (from me anyway) reviews from the British Journal of Photography, Hotshoe, Amateur Photgrapher in the UK, Professional Photographer in the UK, New Digital in Australia have described this book as a 'Classic' in the tradition of books about photographic techniques. The only reservation from John Tarrant was that software changes rapidly and the ramifications of that.

In all honesty I've tried to write a book that summed up nearly 30 years of darkroom practice that I've found a way of reproducing with Photoshop. It took 6 months of my life to work out how to make it readable and instuctive. I've tried to create a 'source' for image making that is not software generation specific. All the techniques work in any generation of Photoshop post Photoshop 5. This book is about pictures not computers. The photographers that allowed me to use their work only asked for a copy of the book in return for their images, as did the wonderful Jerry Hall.

The CD might not be of great use to some people, but it is after all a bonus. The content is the written bit. If you wish to complain first pay for the book, read it, try some of the ideas for yourself and if you are not happy I'll take on board what you say.

I believe I've written a useful book, with some great pictures taken by tallented photographers.

Tutorials on the CD-ROM not working on PC.......2001-11-15

I was very disappointed that the Tutorial on the CD_ROM doesn't run on PC. I only found out this till I saw the Readme file on the CD-ROM. I was lucky because I borrowed the book from a library. The back cover of the book mentions about the content of the CD-ROM, but without mentioning that the Tutorials work only on Mac. The CD-ROM contains only 3 images for reader to manipulate. I don't understand why the author doesn't give readers all the images that he uses in the book. For these reasons, I gave one star. There are plenty similar books available. At least, for PC users, this book is not a good deal.

Max's book de-mystifies the computer for photographers and printers used to working their magic in the darkroom. Max gives clear and simple instructions in a way that will be familar to any who have attended his workshops and lectures. An essential guide that will enable the photographer to achieve the same or better results than they could produce in the darkroom. This is the book I have been waiting for!

Great Book.......2002-04-25

A great Book about a Great Soldier. Easy to read and follow. I recomend it to any veteran

FORGOTTEN WAR'S FORGOTTEN HERO.......2001-12-19

This book is an account of infantry combat in the Korean War by the war's most decorated soldier. Soon after the war Herbert wrote "Conquest to Nowhere" this book is a more detailed account of his 13 months in Korea. Prior to the war Herbert served as a paratrooper and cold weather survival expert. He arrived in Korea in '50, still a private, and attached himself to the 2nd Division by going AWOL from a replacement depot. When the Chinese entered the war Herbert was attached out to a Turkish brigade and earned the Osminieh, their version of the Medal of Honor and one of only nine men to ever recieve it. Back with his own men he experienced cold and hunger and had many escapes from an advancing enemy. He recieved four Purple Hearts. One Purple Heart was for two gun shot wounds in the leg, a bayonet slash across his side, and a bayonet in the back. He was offered a battlefield commission, which he refused, but was promoted to Master SGT on the spot. Later, when his company was in reserve, he stayed on the line with the Marines who awarded him one of three Silver Stars, he also recieved two Bronze Stars,the Ville De Paris,the Distinguished UN medal,the Korean Service Medal with six battle stars, and various other awards. While fighting near HeartBreak Ridge he was pulled from the lines and sent to Washington D.C. to meet Pres. Truman. His home town gave him a parade and he was awarded the New York State Medal Of Honor. He then started a world tour as America's most decorated soldier. After his discharge Herbert wrote "Conquest To Nowhere" and continued to do P.R. work for the army. He even went to Hollywood, for the army, for the purpose of being photographed with Audie Murphy and was a guest on Groucho Marx's "You bet Your Life Show." This is a good infantry book by a man now mostly forgotten.

Stellar photometry deals with the accurate measurement of light from stars and galaxies. It is one of the principal tools of the astronomer and is used in the determination of the brightness, radius and temperature of stars, and, increasingly, in the study of their atmospheres and interiors. The book contains the proceedings of a colloquium held in Dublin in August 1992 that reviewed the most recent developments in stellar photometry and the many technical problems that face photometrists in their quest for ever more accurate and meaningful data.
