This is a wonderful resource for artist technique in general, but I wouldn't suggest it for learning particular skills in any one medium. If you want to specifically learn watercolor, for instance, pick up a speciality book for that medium!

This book changed my life........2004-08-27
I first saw this book in the late 60s, I was young, it expanded my universe. Together with all of John Muir's work, others of Thoreau, Ansel Adams and a book named On The Loose, the effect was complete. In our cynical times what these artists have to say is even more important. A beautiful work.

A Book for the Soul.......2000-10-25
The photography in this book is spectacular! It is what you expect from a Sierra Club book. Put together with wonderfully thoughtful and though-provoking texts by various writers, this book can give even a hard-core city slicker pause. Wilderness at its best....words to salve the heart.

A must for wilderness enthusiasts........2005-06-02
I rarely write online reviews, but I just couldn't help myself for this book. I received it as a gift from a friend who had been treasuring it on his shelf for decades. In 1962 the Sierra Club paired the photography of Porter with quotes from Thoreau to produce a magical experience that carried me away from concrete and exhaust to connect with life's rhythmic continuum. I highly recommend going to the effort of obtaining a copy of this long out-of-print collector's edition instead of wasting your money on one of the recent, less nostalgic, printings.

This is a blind refereed serial publication published on an annual basis. The objective of this research annual is to present state-of-the-art studies in the integration of mathematical programming into financial planning and management. The literature and techniques in financial planning and management are becoming increasingly complex. It is hoped that the monographs aid in the dissemination of research efforts in quantitative financial analysis. The topics will normally include cash management, capital budgeting, financial decisions, portfolio management and performance analysis, and financial planning models. The analyses generally include mixed integer programming, goal programming, biased regression techniques and simulation models, application of forecasting methodologies to such areas as sales, marketing, and strategic decision making (an accurate, robust forecast is critical to effective decision making). It is the hope of the editors that the majority of the papers will simulate questions and possible solutions that are of interest to financial planners.

Human capital and organizational capital are increasingly important as a source of value in many firms. But even as this is happening, organizational forms and employment relationships appear to be changing in ways that reduce loyalty and commitment and encourage mobility on the part of employees. Are these changes consistent in ways that contradict traditional theory and wisdom, or is the corporate sector getting a temporary boost in earnings by restructuring and cutting payrolls, but failing to make necessary new investments in human capital?
The essays in this book provide intriguing new evidence on these questions. The contributors quantify the degree to which job stability is declining, and the costs of job loss to long-term workers; provide historical perspective on today's workplace changes; explore the reasons why work is being reorganized and decisionmaking tasks are being pushed downward; examine the rationale for and effect of equity-based compensation systems, both in old industries and in the newest high-tech sectors; and assess the "state of the art" of measuring and accounting for investments in human capital.
This book is the result of a joint Brookings-MIT conference. A bird-lovers must have!.......2004-01-21
Jan Mahnken has put together a book that will be of great help to anyone who would like to have a backyard full of birds. Whether you are new to the hobby of feeding and watching birds or are an old pro this book will be of great help. If you are a new birder this book is a must for it is well written and easy to understand. In the long run will save you a lot of money as it will help you decide on the kinds of feed you need and what will just be wasted. For the old pro, the clear division of subjects and easy to read writing style will help you add to the knowledge you already have.
The chapter on nest boxes is one of the best in the book and includes plans for building almost any type of birdhouse that you choose. There are also sections on bird behavior, nesting, and identifying different kinds of birds. The last section of the book provides little biographies of various kinds of birds you may be able to attract to your backyard. The only negative I found in this book was that the author tried to describe the ranges of the birds profiled instead of providing a map. Living in the mid-south I am relatively close to several ranges and sometimes found Ms. Mahnken's descriptions of range limits somewhat hard to follow. Finally, there is an index that will help you immensely in trying to attract certain kinds of birds and in identifying their nests.
I am extremely glad I bought this book, as it has already been a big help to me. It will hold a prominent place in my library.
