Bring life to your paintings!.......2002-02-24
.
In this fascinating book, Everett Draper shows you how to quickly and accurately sketch the actions of people. You learn how to size a figure and paint shadows so that the figure looks three dimensional. Using basic anatomy, he teaches you to capture someone's gesture with just a few loose pencil strokes, creating them in correct proportion and believable actions.
A figure in your painting draws attention like a magnet. The author explains how to use that fact to draw the viewer into the painting. It's important to recognize this so that you don't end up with conflicting focal points! Using the visual power of a figure effectively means paying attention to things like fitting it not only into the best place, but also into the mood and technique of the work. Draper explains and illustrates how this can be done.
The book is filled with a library of colorful examples -- running, walking, laughing, active, energetic or peaceful-- giving you a huge source of figures to adapt to your own paintings, as well as the knowledge you need to create your own.
I haven't painted for years and have sold most of my library, but it's hard to part with this one. I still enjoy just looking through it!
The best book there is on people and gesture drawing........1997-08-11
I've had the book for several years and am about to buy another because I've worn it out

Book Description
This collection of essays, Volume 17 of The Tamarind Papers and the third to be produced in book form, describes the intersections of lithography, photography, and established printmaking techniques. Considering topics from William Henry Fox Talbot's botanical illustrations and the Lemerciers invention of photolithography to the sociopolitical prints of Ben Shahn and Walton Fords incorporation of the photograph in contemporary lithography, these nine essays mark the two hundredth anniversary of the lithographic process and expand the history of graphic processes in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The connections between lithography and photography are many and varied. This volume expands the reader's knowledge of the history of printmaking and underscores the enduring beauty of prints.

Book Description
Barbara E. Savedoff seeks to discern the distinctive character of photography as an art. Why, she asks, do similar images in paintings and photographs strike us differently? How is our reaction to a photograph of a painting unlike our response to the "real" painting? In this imaginative and beautifully illustrated book, she argues that the way we look at and understand photographs varies dramatically from the way we view other images.
Savedoff convincingly demonstrates that photography's perceived realism, along with its unexpected ability to transform its subjects, gives this art form its enigmatic power. Featuring examples of the image-within-an-image, her book explores ambiguities of representation in paintings, in photographs, and in films such as Shall We Dance, Sabotage, and Buster Keaton's Sherlock Junior. The volume also addresses questions concerning altered photographs, photo-realist paintings, animated cartoons, and photographic reproductions.
A meditative closing chapter probes the effects of digital alteration on our understanding of images. Savedoff argues that as digital imagery becomes more common, our way of looking at photographs and gauging their impact is irrevocably changed.

the eternal question - photography as art.......2000-09-28
This is an excellent introduction to the idea of photography as realism that sets the medium in the context of other art forms and the cross-fertilisation between media. Eminently readable, here is a painless and engaging survey of the history of photography that reveals how profoundly the medium has transformed not only the appearance of artworks but our very perception of the world. An example of her approach is the way Savedoff contemplates, with nods to Berger and Benjamin, the impact that the proliferation of photographic reproductions have had on our attitude and understanding of of artworks experienced remotely and vicariously, examining more speculatively than other writers just what it is that we see and cannot see in photographs of art. Good monochrome illustrations throughout jog the memory or inspire a search for something more satisfyingly close to the original. Here's a lively and wise discussion that I have found has just the right pitch for our second year tertiary fine art photography students.

Warren Ellis improves on his already outstanding stories and characters in the second collection of Planetary: The Fourth Man. While scraping their way through their investigations, the three archaeologists of mystery, enigmatic themselves, deal with their own past and learn more about the creepy metahumans lurking behind practically every oddity on the planet. Ellis seems to take pleasure in turning superheroic icons inside out. Fans will find references and deconstructions from the Golden Age to the post-postmodern comics world. John Cassaday's penciling adapts itself well to the stories, giving intimate barroom chats and epic battles against giant ants equal credibility. While reading Planetary, one gets the sense that superhero comics really do have somewhere to go after being so thoroughly demolished in the '80s and '90s--and that we'd do well to keep reading. --Rob Lightner
Customer Reviews:
hater.......2007-05-31
The story is awesome. The art is superb. I, however, have a huge complaint with Ellis's writing. The man cannot write a sentence to save his life. I find myself frustrated and confused more often than not. Part of this might be his work load. He may be stretching himself too thin. Moreover, whoever edits his comics (especially, on Avatar) should focus on the words and the syntax over story and panel directing - or whatever comic-book editors do. I'm not trying to be a jerk, just venting some frustration toward an otherwise fine creator.
Pulp Fiction.......2006-06-04
I don't know why, but for some reason, I just don't find Planetary as awesome as many people claim it is. There are two comic stores I frequent due to the fact that, currently, I am a college student. The guy who owns the one in my college town is constantly singing Planetary's praises, while the shop in my hometown has a section reserved for the cream of the crop, and Planetary is in it. However, I just don't see what everyone else is.
I don't think Planetary is bad. In fact, I find the concept to be very cool; a team of para-archaeologists travels the world investigating strange events that parallel events from other comic books as well as science fiction in general. Each issue is, for the most part, stand-alone, and they involve people like a John Constantine parallel, a story about three people similar to Superman, the Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman, as well as an issue that is a send-up of 1950's B-grade sci-fi/monster movies. Planetary is good, but there is just a problem or two that I just can't put my finger on. One thing that I realized is that, with the exception of the three main characters, I can't seem to keep any of the names straight. This is strange, because I can usually keep track of characters very well, but in Planetary, when Elijah Snow refers to William Leather, I know that the name sounds familiar, but I don't know who he is.
Still, despite my strange inability to follow this series, I do intend on sticking with it for now.
Excellent comic.......2005-12-08
With Warren Ellis, you never know what you're gonna get. It could be a great thing...or it could be ultimate fantastic four:doom. Planetary is excellent, i find no faults in it...the dialogue is very witty and the sotries are really good, i almost choked on volume 2's Magic and Loss i have never been more entertained by a Warren Ellis comic in such a long time. Long story short Planetary is about archaeologists who look for the secret history and weird stuff that makes up our world...so far we have discovered a villanous group called the four voyagers who are kinda like the evil fantastic four and has plunged the world into madness...killing superheroes, concentration camps etc...it is a very fun read and the art is simply amazing....john cassaday does a very good drawing convincing characters.
Good writing; Excelent Art.......2004-05-25
This is the second work of Ellis I've read. The first was the previous Planetary volume. In this one, aside from crafting a tale of espinoge and intrigue that reads like the X-files meet the X-men, Ellis continues to reinturrpet pop culture archetypes. Here he brings in analogues to John Constantine, James Bond, Marilyn Monroe, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and even Morpheus from the Matrix. Even more than that he explores and developes these ideas and uses them to create a strange and compelling universe.
If I have one complaint, it's that Ellis doesn't get into the psyches and background of the characters as much as I'd like to see. We do get into the territory by the end of the book, though,
Planetary kicks in to a whole new gear.......2004-03-05
I was somewhat disappointed with the previous volume of Planetary. I felt that Ellis just kind of dropped us into the action without much set up, especially in character development. The Fourth Man really improves upon the earlier premise. Ellis starts to unwind a much larger plot, while Cassaday's skills mature into true excellence.
Some of the essentially single issue tales presented here are stronger than others, but each one, while still a distinctly separate story, winds in threads of intriguing future developments. Ellis also effortlessly manipulates time, seamlessly showing us past events while leading up to future revelations. Elijah Snow is a captivating character, deeply enigmatic, charasmatic, yet conflcted. His search for his missing blocks of memory is extremely well handled and really has me hooked and looking forward to the next volume of the TPB series.
Cassaday's art, and the rich colors supporting it, is magnificent throughout. His detailed, stylish illustration pairs very nicely with the vibrant, stylish colors. He is one of the very best artists in comics, and this is a perfect example of his best work.
Ultimately, Planetary succeeds in updating traditional Science Fiction themes and melding it with Superheros. The result is a fresh exciting look and feel for modern comics. Because of the way the bigger story develops, you don't necessarily have to start with the prior TPB volume. It's certainly worth your while, but if you can only get one of the two volumes right now, get this one. After reading it, you can get the first volume, while you anxiously await the arrival of future Planetary releases. This is some of Ellis' and Cassaday's best work, and great stuff over all from one of the most talented teams in the business.

This is a must book for engineers, scientists, and engineering managers. Garvey's book presents how probability theory is applied to model, measure, and manage risk in the cost of a systems engineering project. The work is a first of its kind in the engineering, cost engineering/analysis, and operations research communities.
The book provides readers a clear discussion on the nature of uncertainty, how it affects the cost of a systems engineering project, and how probability methods are used to model, measure, and control risk from a systems engineering perspective. Readers benefit from the numerous mathematical and professional anecdotes, case discussions, results, observations, and interpretations found throughout the chapters.
The book contains 110 applied and theoretical exercises. It is an outstanding text for students in engineering and the related fields.

What's a almost 38 year old doing writing about this?.......2005-06-25
I feel that abuse is the number one reason why men and women still think the other has the "COOTIES". I mean it neither one of us stop to think about the fact that we're hurting each other. For the men who abuse you say you love your girlfriend, or wife then make sure you do the right things to make sure she doesn't leave you, and then make it hard for other guys to love her. This is the same for girls who abuse. I know that some out there love to be abused, but given half a chance I'm sure at least a good 80% of them would admit "This Sucks". I found this to be actually one of the better books on this subject as it does include tips for those who batter. I feel that the batterer is left on an island as everyone just looks at the batterer with scorn and just tells him/her to see to their own problems. This isn't right; while it's not right for the abuser to abuse it's not right to just shun and avoid the abuser either otherwise they will not be willing to get the help so desparately needed. I know with me I know I have a problem with this, and I want help because I don't want to hurt people anymore the same way I don't want to be hurt by people anymore. Worth Reading.

Book Description
The Caucasus--a region of supreme natural beauty and fiercely proud warriors--has throughout history been characterized by violence and turmoil. During the Great Caucasus War of 1834-1859, the warring mountain tribes of Daghestan and Chechnya united under the charismatic leadership of the Muslim chieftain Imam Shamyl, the "Lion of Daghestan", and held at bay the invading Russian army for nearly 25 years. Lesley Blanch vividly recounts the epic story of their heroic and bloody struggle for freedom and the life of a man still legendary in the Caucasus.
Customer Reviews:
a good book .......2006-05-14
it is good book for everyone interested in the history of Caucasus, in the history of the struggle of the Caucasian people (Avars, Chechens, Cherkess and so on) against Russia's intervention. By the way contrary to a common opinion in the West, Imam Shamil was not a Chechen he was an Avar.
good read indeed, but full of mistakes. .......2005-05-27
Have to say, it reads fast and pleasant. You will not regret getting this book if you decide to do so. I withheld two stars because book claims to be historical, while there are quite a few inaccuracies.
I respect the admiration author has for Caucasian mountaineers (being descendent of such it is especially pleasant), but she definitely overromanticizes her hero(s). Shamyl is great enough figure and Chechens are brave enough people to be in need of overglorification.
Book tells a lot of legends and passes them as facts. Some most naïve, even silly XIX c stereotypes are restated without questioning - i.e. Khevsurs being descendents of Crusaders who passed through Caucasus in their due time!!! This lame assumption is based on the fact of cross being important symbol among Khevsurs (who in fact are Georgian mountaineers, just like Svans (Suanetians) who Blanch "mistakes" for Muslim North Caucasians (in fact they are Christian). Khevsur cross is pre-Christian symbol (sufficient archeological evidence for anyone who cares to check).
Blanch also retells number of legends told by Alexander Dumas in his "Adventures in the Caucasus" (without referring to the source!) And names some of those legends (I remember two: Shete, child-tongue cutter; and a father who cut up his son's dead body into 70 pieces and sent to his relatives as a request for revenge...) as "Chechen stories", while Dumas tells them as Tushetian ones (another Georgian Christian tribe).
Either she is mistaken, or she purposefully mislocates the origin of characters in order to draw a portrait of Chechens the way she wants. It is OK to be mistaken and I hope it is just a mistake, because I really don't like when writer misleads the reader...
There is not much research done and there are very few books written about Caucasian history in any language. Despite what I said above, this one is probably the best among English books I have come across. So, I recommend it to everyone, especially if you are not a history buff, but a sucker for good romantic story about bravery and glory and freedom, etc. We may say, story is "based on true story". Enjoy it!
Shades of Arrakis.......2002-04-29
This book is not only a very pleasant read about the Russian conquest of the Caucasus, and thus good background for understanding the current problems there. It's also a source from which Frank Herbert drew heavily when writing his science fiction novel *Dune*. Such terms as chakobsa, kanly and kindjal are not unique to Blanch's book, but they certainly resonate with Herbert's fans.
Highly recommended and very readable.
Lion of Dhagestan.......2001-12-15
The reviews I've read so far fail to emphasize that this book, while it certainly covers much of the history of the Caucuses in the latter half of the 19th century, is in no small part a biography of Imam Shamyl, "The Lion of Dhagestan", and his role as the leader of what was referred to as "The Mureed Wars". Shamyl was a legendary, charismatic leader who, through the power of his Islamic faith, and with the added dimension of being son-in-law of one of the great Shaykhs of the Naqshbandi Sufi order (Jamaluddin Ghumuqi), united the various tribes and peoples of this region to fight off the great Russian Bear for nearly 25 years. It is an epic tale of heroism and tragedy on a personal and cultural level, and will grip the reader as they follow the exploits and the battles that are still to this day legendary in the Caucuses.

Book Description
The Battle for the Caucasus (July 1942-October 1943) coincided in time with the Stalingrad and Kursk battles, and played an important role in bringing about a radical change in the course of the Second World War.
In this book the prominent Soviet military commander, Marshal of the Soviet Union Andrei Grechko, gives a stage-by-stage account of the heroic Battle for the Caucasus: the heavy fighting in the Don and Kuban steppes, the battles on the Stavropol Heights and in the foothills of the Caucasus, the defense of Novorossiisk, Krasnodar, Maikop, Tuapse and Armavir and the destruction of the enemy forces in the passes of the Main Caucasian Range.
Signs of an impending turning-point appeared in January 1943 when divisions and then armies went over to the offensive driving the enemy out of Stavropol, Kransodar and the Kuban. Like a mighty mountain torrent the entire mass of Soviet troops swept the Germans out of the North Caucasus. It was a magnificent display of the power of Soviet arms, and the fraternity and friendship of the Soviet peoples.
The author objectively examines every phase of the great battle and reinforces his conclusions with documents.
Customer Reviews:
Great memoir.......2006-03-20
While the battle for Stalingrad was going on another huge offensive was being undertaken by the Germans in the Caucasus to give them the oil that they would eventually need if they wanted to continue the war they had started. Andrei Grechko was one of the commanding generals in the Caucasus and in this book details the actions undertaken by various fronts and battle groups. This is a combination of land armies, flotillas, and air force armies and their struggle against German and Romanian troops for control of Southern Russia. One can easily get bogged down in all the names of villages, towns, and cities as well as the enormous amounts of troop formations, from battalions, regiments, brigades, divisions, corps, to armies but the overall impression you will be left with is that these battles might have been even more instrumental than Stalingrad was. There were more German divisions with Army Group A which was in the Caucasus and they might have been trapped if it wasn't for the resistance that the 6th Army would eventually put up at Stalingrad after being surrounded. Aside from the general tone there are many personal stories of bravery and heroics on the part of Red Army men and partisans who were working against the Germans. The recounting of 'Malaya Zemlya' was excellent as well as descriptions of operations in Novorossiisk which witnessed some of the most ferocious fighting during the war. Overall a solid investment for an understanding of a part of the war that most overlook or skim over.

Contributors to this impressive volume examine and consider the major features and legacies of operative and speculative Freemasonry in the British Isles. The authors also assess the impact of Masonry upon civic cultures, classes, and institutions in both Europe and North America. The volume contains incisive chapters about Freemasonry in colonial and revolutionary America, and about the salient role of the craft in Mexico.
