Book Description
Though mankind has made many advances in the past few centuries, we have not quite mastered the art of flying, certainly not to the extent that birds have. Thus Luca Buvoli's notes and research and diagrams on the art of flying are greatly appreciated, especially this uniquely assembled artist's book, in which he offers tips for the intermediate flyer.

Book Description
He has been called "the phantom of photography," but he sees himself as a "non-violent anarchist" with a Leica, film and geometric vision...letting others find what they wish in his work. Henri Cartier-Bresson, the most acclaimed candid photographer in the world, is revered as a demi-god by legions of miniature-camera enthusiasts, who have almost never seen a picture of him. Until now, after half-a-century of shooting everybody, everywhere, he has remained the photographer without a face. In May 2000, on assignment chronicling camera old-timers, Cartier-Bresson decided to shoot his subject, friend and colleague David Douglas Duncan, at the Picasso museum in Paris. Upon arriving at the shoot, Duncan decided to seize a rare opportunity. He spontaneously borrowed his wife's zoom-lens camera and asked Cartier-Bresson for a roll of film. And then, without a word between them, Duncan reversed the roles and began to photograph Cartier-Bresson. From this casual exchange, Duncan fully realized the outstanding nature of these images and determined to turn them into a tribute to a master of photography. This book captures the true essence of portraiture and will be sure to become a classic of its genre: a one of a kind portrait of a photographer by one of his peers and a lesson of "spontaneity" in portrait photography.

What a bunch of horse sh...........2002-02-14
If Duncan would have filled the book with stories of his friendship with HCB and given us some insight we may not have found anywhere else, this book could be good. I like hearing the anecdotes of the quirks that HCB exhibited on a daily basis. I'm sure Duncan could have filled a book with interesting insights... but that is not the case here.
Fact is, he gives a few pages of blurbs and then fills this book with shots from one roll of film. Candids so to speak of HCB and his Leica. That's it. The whole book.
There is far too much [bad] photography out in the world today and some of it I respect because it is art and I even respect Duncan's photography but this book? Gads.
Here we are, us starving photographers trying to get a hold in the industry that calls so many and chooses so few.... and this book is published. Why? I know I sound resentful... well of course I do! I'm a photographer without a published book of my own! At least give me great books to look at until I can share mine with the world! :P
I think I'm going to get iPhoto and make my own books and slug them on the net. Sit down with someone for 20 minutes, snap off 20 to 30 images of them... make a book.
Give me Inferno any day. Now that (to me) is a photo book. It's a coffee table book substantial enough to be a coffee table. I would pay a month of rent for Inferno. Don't have it? Buy it today.
Don't waste your money on this one. There are far better books to waste your money on. :)
Cheers,
Zack ...
Faceless by David Douglas Duncan.......2001-03-22
Only on very rare occasions has Henri Cartier-Bresson who has spent his adult life capturing the images of others allowed himself to be photographed. Mr. Duncan's decisive five minutes with his former associate now provide a unique opportunity to see HCB in action, but I suspect that "Faceless" would not have sat still for the candids if he realized that his old friend DDD was going to blow his cover and publish the off-guard moments. One reviewer of this book notes that Mr. Duncan lost his friendship with HCB because he published these photos. Even though the proceeds from the book will go to the University of Texas, losing a friendship would not be worth this book of snapshots.
Disavowed by Cartier-Bresson.......2001-02-24
Those of you who would buy this book because you are fans of the subject should know that Mr. Cartier-Bresson has done everything he could to prevent this book from being published. It is against his wishes, and Mr. Duncan's decision to go ahead and publish it has effectively ended their (formerly friendly) relationship.
It's a silly idea to begin with. Out of an entire roll of film, even of a master like Cartier-Bresson, how many images are publishable and how many are forgettable?
This is a sad exercise by Mr. Duncan to cash in on the famed reclusiveness of his subject.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent but needs updating.......2006-12-01
I taught business writing in the late 1990s and used this as a textbook in my classes. I hope Irwin (or someone) publishes an updated version. The 1994 edition treats email as if it is a new thing, uses some outdated terminology, etc. But the general principles taught by the book remain as relevant as ever. The before/after examples are particularly helpful. Neiditz reduces business writing (indeed, clear communication in general) to its essentials. The book teaches in 200 pages what other books teach in twice that. I hope this excellent volume is updated and not forgotten.

Very good book.......2002-12-11
Although I haven't read this book in print form, I have read it online for free. It's very authoritative and full of information. The only problem I have is that it lacks subjectivity: doesn't tell you the "problems" a certain career might have or its workload.
In conclusion, every student or non-student who's just looking for a different career path will benefit from the info in this book.
Ideal reference for perosnal job and career research........2000-05-04
In its Occupational Outlook Handbook 2000-2001, The U.S. Department of Labor provides exhaustive, accurate, up-to-date information on all major jobs and occupations in the United States. This easy to use, authoritative, and definitive reference offers the most useful database of information on jobs and salaries available today. All jobs are arranged into logical clusters, making it simple to find a given occupation. The descriptions are clearly written and replete with pertinent and useful information on skills, pay, working conditions, training, educational prerequisites and more. Occupational Outlook Handbook 2000-2001 is an essential, core reference title for school and community job center counseling, and ideal for personal job and career research.
A big help.......1999-07-27
It's definitely a good book to have, if anything because it's very clearly cross-referenced. I got a lot out of it, and have been lending it out to a lot of my friends. VaultReports publishes similar stuff which is also pretty good.

Published every two years by the U.S. Dept. of Labor. The resource used by more career counselors than any other. Good, basic occupational information on hundreds of jobs covering over 90% of the workforce.

Much better books are available.......2005-05-17
I read this over a few hours one weekend.I must say that this book promises more than it can deliver. In attempting to cover a huge concept, much of the text is rather superficial and diffuse, somewhat like the electron cloud readers of such books are familiar with. However, unlike the electron cloud, the diffuseness does not contribute to the mystique and there are a number of better treatises available.I did read of a couple of experiments I had not heard about elsewhere but otherwise was quite unimpressed.
An Interesting Look at Mind/Body.......1998-11-20
Nick Herbert's Elemental Mind makes an interesting supposition -- that the mind, or consciousness, is a force that interacts with the world, like gravity or electromagnetism. He makes a pretty good argument that ESP and Telekinesis would prove that this is so; unfortunately, his examples (the typewriter open to the quantum void and the branching photon experiment) don't seem to show any evidence that the greater supposition is correct. The book is very interesting, though, and leads one into all manner of speculation about how peculiar the quantum universe and though actually are. A well written, entertaining, and informative book.
An interesting view of quantum theory and mind.......1998-09-29
When read along with Herbert's previous book, Quantum Reality, this text makes a good case for invoking quantum physics to explain the relation of mind and matter and also in explaining some of the more convincing experiments in parapsychology (effects of consciousness on random number generators) which suggest a non-locality of mind. If more people took such ideas seriously and devoted time and research to them, understanding of the mind and a true theory of consciousness might be forthcoming.
Book Description
The invention of flight represents the culmination of centuries of thought and desire. Kites and rockets sparked our collective imagination. Then the balloon gave humanity its first experience aloft, though at the mercy of the winds. The steerable airship that followed had more practicality, yet a number of insurmountable limitations. But the airplane truly launched the Aerial Age, and its subsequent impact--from the vantage of a century after the Wright Brother's historic flight on December 17, 1903--has been extraordinary. Richard Hallion, a distinguished international authority on aviation, offers a bold new examination of aircraft history, stressing its global roots. The result is an interpretive history of uncommon sweep, complexity, and warmth. Taking care to place each technological advance in the context of its own period as well as that of the evolving era of air travel, this ground-breaking work follows the pre-history of flight, the work of balloon and airship advocates, fruitless early attempts to invent the airplane, the Wright brothers and other pioneers, the impact of air power on the outcome of World War I, and finally the transfer of prophecy into practice as flight came to play an ever-more important role in world affairs, both military and civil. Making extensive use of extracts from the journals, diaries, and memoirs of the pioneers themselves, and interspersing them with a wide range or rare photographs and drawings, Taking Flight leads readers to the laboratories and airfields where aircraft were conceived and tested. Forcefully yet gracefully written in rich detail and with thorough documentation, this book is certain to be the standard reference for years to come on how humanity came to take to the sky, and what the Aerial Age has meant to the world since da Vinci's first fantastical designs.
Customer Reviews:
An encyclopedic overview of the history of flight.......2003-09-14
This work offers an encyclopedic overview of the history of flight from the earliest legends through the First World War. Though his focus is on heavier-than-air flight, he also includes extensive coverage of the development of lighter-than-air craft and how it influenced aeronautical development. Throughout this book, Hallion demonstrates both an impressive range of knowledge and a welcome capacity for explaining some of the more technical details of aerodynamics - one that is especially welcome when it comes to explaining why so many of the Wrights' predecessors failed in their attempts to master flight.
The portrait Hallion paints is a fascinating one. He conveys the extent to which the Wright brothers built upon the achievements of both their predecessors and their contemporaries. Developments were reaching a critical mass, which - as Hallion repeatedly asserts - would almost certainly have led to heavier-than-air flight by 1910 (with the first flight most likely taking place in France). Nevertheless, the author does not underrate the Wrights' considerable accomplishment and its contribution to our history. Even after Europeans were first taking to the air in heavier-than-air craft, the Wrights' Flyer was still considerably superior to its counterparts on the other side of the Atlantic - as Wilbur Wright himself demonstrated in his 1908 tour of Europe.
As Hallion shows, however, Wilbur's tour represented the pinnacle of the Wrights' achievement. He describes the year 1909 as the year when the invention of flight ended and its refinement begins. In this phase the Europeans had a considerable advantage, for as the Wrights were pioneering flight the Europeans were focusing more on the scientific study of aerodynamics, something which Hallion sees as integral to the shift in aeronautical advancement from the New World back to the Old. Wedded to an increasingly obsolescent (and inherently dangerous) design, the Wrights no longer represented the leading edge of airplane development, one that was moving forward at a dramatic rate. Before the First World War ended, airplanes were already demonstrating speed, endurance, and applications that most people take for granted today but which almost none of the early pioneers had imagined were possible.
Yet while Hallion's book is one of the best histories of its subject, it has a number of annoying flaws. Foremost is the fact that this is very much a book of its time. The author constantly endeavors to make connections to modern concepts, with these portions - such as the conversion of currency amounts to their 2001 equivalents, or his repeated references to the events of September 11 - are likely to diminish the book's usefulness in the years to come. At times the encyclopedic nature of his account is almost annoyingly so (I have yet to find the trivia contest that required knowing that the commander of Germany's Zeppelin division was shot down by a plane which had taken off from the same city that had been a target of the first Zeppelin raid over England). Finally, he overemphasizes the historical impact of the airplane, especially in the First World War. He implies, for example, that the course of events at the battles of Tannenberg and the Marne was altered because of the use of airplanes, yet he offers no evidence to substantiate this claim beyond stressing the role the planes played as scouts while understating the other sources of information available to the commanders. Such claims are impossible to prove, of course, and only undermine the veracity of the author's historical judgment. Nevertheless, these problems should not detract from the overall value of this book in understanding both the long journey to flight and how it impacts us today.
Especially recommended for aviation buffs.......2003-08-10
Composed by NASA historian and international authority on aviation Richard P. Hallion, Taking Flight: Inventing The Aerial Age From Antiquity Through The First World War combines primary sources such as journals, diaries, and memoirs of aviation pioneers, with a scholarly and meticulous recounting of the evolution of aviation technology. Black-and-white photographs and keen attention to detail distinguish this recommended trove of an informed and informative history which is especially recommended for aviation buffs and an invaluable addition to academic and community library Aviation History reference collections.
An Extraordinary Achievement.......2003-07-26
Richard Hallion's TAKING FLIGHT is a literary and historical tour-de-force. Hallion writes with grace, style, and consumate skill. He weaves an incredibly rich tale of remarkable individuals who, over the centuries, brought the gift of flight to the world. With a thoroughness and solid grounding that is evident in the rich range of sources he has examined, Hallion shatters myths and reexamines the invention of flight. This places the work of the Wrights and other pioneers in a historical context sadly lacking in most other books on the subject. Not content--wisely so--to limit his text just to the events surrounding the Wrights, Hallion transports the reader from the early kite and rocket-firing pioneers of China, to the churches of medieval Europe, and on to the Renaissance and Baroque eras when technologists first conceived balloons and studied winged flight. He details the early flights of balloonists and airship enthusiasts, and the slow, painful progress towards inventing the airplane. Intriguingly, he explores why America succeeded in this race--but then let Europe speed rapidly past it. Perhaps most remarkably, Hallion succeeds in presenting this detailed story without either drowning the general reader with jargon-laden prose, or boring the technical specialist with a "dumbed-down" text. TAKING FLIGHT has received plaudits from many reviewers, and it left this reader eager to read any successor volume that Hallion might write taking the story to the present. If you buy just one book on the invention of flight during this 100th anniversary year, this is the one!
Masterful.......2003-06-27
The reason I give "Taking Flight" 5 stars is because there's no rating for 10. This is a masterful treatment of an extremely complex subject, and while the entire history of human flight is probably beyond any single volume, Hallion's tome approaches the definitive.
Apart from a thorough assessment of flight in myth, legend, and actuality, "Taking Flight" also assesses the cultral influences leading to Kitty Hawk and beyond. In these PC days it's refreshing to see an iron-clad argument as to why only western civilization could have produced powered flight. The progression from kites to balloons, dirigibles, and airplanes is rendered with authority and style.
In another 100 years, Dick Hallion's book will still be cited.
A Beautifully Written Tribute to Early Flight.......2003-06-04
Richard Hallion's Taking Flight is wonderful. It's clearly written and extremely engaging. I didn't know much about flight pre-Wright brothers, and this book weaves the story of man's obsession with the skies from ancient times to the Wrights. It contains much more social and political history than I thought it would--making it the story of man and technology through the lens of flight. I think it's a great complement to all the Wright brothers books out in this anniversary year. I didn't read the notes in the back (there were simply too many) but you needn't read them. A great summer reading.

Book Description
This volume--a collection of essays dedicated to one of this century's most distinguished medieval historians, David Herlihy--introduces the general reader to the new social history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The essays address three themes: sex and the family, power and patronage in local history, and society in town and countryside. The authors use current research to illustrate how Herlihy's ideas continue to shape work about the lives of powerful and ordinary people in this long and important period of Western history.
Portraits of Medieval and Renaissance Living opens with Herlihy's final summary of his views on family history, followed by a reminiscence by his most important collaborator, Christiane Klapisch-Zuber. The first group of essays takes us inside specific familial settings, using recent methods in anthropological, legal, and women's studies to uncover new dimensions of medieval and Renaissance family life. A second group of studies focuses on the question of authority in medieval society and advances new theses about politics and society in Florence and other local settings. The final group of authors considers the special circumstances of town and countryside in Italy, England, and Spain and draws insightful generalizations across territorial and national boundaries.
Like Herlihy's own work, these essays present innovative and challenging hypotheses about significant problems in the history of medieval and Renaissance Europe. Important new material on Florence, family history, religion, the Inquisition, and taxation is presented for the first time, but the essays are not simply technical exercises focused on small or isolated pieces of research. Thus the volume will go beyond the interest of specialists in medieval and Renaissance social history and will attract a wide audience of students and scholars.
Samuel K. Cohn, Jr., is Professor of History, Brandeis University. Steven Epstein is Professor of History, University of Colorado.

Book Description
Three times Judy Leden has been the champion of the world—twice in hang gliding and once in paragliding—and 6 times British Women's Champion. In Patagonia, she realized her dream of flying wing-tip to wing-tip with Andean condors. This is her autobiography.
Customer Reviews:
Abook once started , hard to put down.......1999-09-05
Came across this book by Judy Leden aa a present from my wife after attending a talk by the author.I found it got more compelling as I read into the book. She found a way of mixing technical details whilst still giving a good adventure read. I felt as if I was flying with her on the altitude record drop.
Fascinating auto-biography of an exceptional HG/PG pilot.......1999-03-16
This book is a lot more than the story of a truly exceptional female pilot multi- world-record holder in hang-gliding & paragliding. It describes truly breath-taking experiences of flying in various - sometimes extreme - conditions around the world and it gives an insight into the qualities required of a world champion. It also includes many interesting reflections upon human relations, will, motivation, generosity and - yes, why not ? - the meaning of life. Evidently, it is a must for every air enthusiast. However, "non-enthusiasts" should also find it very interesting.
An absolute must for free flyers.......1998-06-19
One of the most inspirational books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. An absolute must for any free flight pilot, and for anyone reaching for a dream. Many thanks to the author, a Sky God in my book.
An inspiring, wonderful read.......1998-05-26
This book has everything, it is after all real life. It is astounding to see the dedication exhibited by Judy Leden in the pursuit of a full-time paragliding career. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad , sometimes exhilarating this is story of a very interesting life.
