"It is proper to the way of living," the author Jean Paul Richter once noticed, "that one is polite also against himself".
However, Mondrian painted manically compulsively out of a fear against the chaos of the world daily. Although it did not feed him, he could not quit this activity; he continued to work, got pneumonia in that cold New York winter [slaving away in the unheated studio for three days non-stop] and died before he could finish his "Victory Broadway Boogie Woogie" painting. A tribute to the city of New York which on the other hand almost let him starve, the money at least did not reach for having the heating on.
Nevertheless he loved this town full of jazz, dance and boogie-woogie (he liked to dance there). His paintings are telling a tribute to this pulsating, dynamic Big Apple.
Burst from the desert of the Dutch landscape, saved in the liver Paris, escaping the racial world of the Nazis - like many other artists did. While however painters like Max Beckmann were getting a university-chair offered in New York, this luck did not fall to Mondrian.
With an astonishing optimistic colour joy he managed to compensate the real sadness. His last work, "Broadway Boogie Woogie" almost works like a city centre Map: Horizontally numbered the Avenues streets -- only the slash of Broadway breaking out of this grid is missing vertical.
One is filled with consternation occasionally, out of which suffering art can arise.
Mondrian may have been assessed compulsion neurotically. However, if he could set such harmonious works against this hell, he is a winner, not a looser.
His compositions against the chaos of the world are fascinating forever. The effort had to be done - though it has been a hard life for Mondrian...

I found this book at my local library and immeadiately knew I wanted to own this book. I have family and friends that suffer form arthritis and it has given me a new view on the issues in their life. I think this is a must read for people that suffer from arthritis, or are close to those who have it.
The section about medications was especially helpful. I plan to share this book with my grandmother soon to help her communicate better with her doctor.

An excellent book to be used in the field........1999-01-22
An excellent book in terms of the text and photographic material, this book is small in size and makes it easy to carry around in the field. The text is written in simple English, making the information both precise and concise.Technical terms are kept to the minimum, making it user friendly for both beginners and experienced ornithologists. The description of the identificatory features are brief,focusing only on the important field characteristics. The bird calls and songs are also described fairly accurately, judging from my own personal experience as an experienced amateur field ornithologist here in Peninsular Malaysia. This book compliments the existing field guides in the region. The photographs are excellent in terms of quality and certainly help in the identification of birds since photographs show colour and jizz of the bird accurately, which in some cases may be difficult with line drawings and paintings. It is indeed comendable to note that the majority of the photographs were taken under natural conditions in the wild as the surrounding habitat is also shown. Though some of the birds were photographed in captivity (e.g. the hornbills,partridges and some pheasants), this still serves its purpose for accurate identification. It is a very handy book to have for visiting birdwatchers to Malaysia and Singapore who will find the descriptions and the photographs good. Some of your identification problems may be solved instantly.

Description:
Over the past few decades, the montane forests of Peninsula Malaysia have been severely impacted by the cultivation of exotic crops and urban sprawl. To guide conservation initiatives, montane bird communities were studied to determine their response along a disturbance gradient with the aim of identifying key factors influencing their distribution. Habitat types surveyed included primary and secondary montane forests, a tea plantation, rural, and urban areas in Cameron Highlands and Fraser's Hill. Response variables included species richness and density quantified via point counts and mistnet surveys. Explanatory variables measured were related to vegetation structure, food abundance and land-use cover. Estimated 'true' species richness was higher for pristine and minimally disturbed sites, lower in tea plantation and lowest in heavily developed town centres. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling revealed that both vegetation structure (e.g. canopy density) and land-use cover (e.g. proportion of forest cover) influence species distribution; certain invasive lowland birds were tolerant of extreme development and native montane birds, in general, endured only slight habitat disturbances. A simulation indicated that montane forest dependant species richness started to decline when more than 20% of the canopy cover was lost. Less than a third of the species richness remained when more than 40% of the canopy cover was cleared. The logistic regression model suggested that sensitive species nested lower, were restricted to montane habitats and foraged in mid or high canopy. The dominance of lowland invasives in highly developed urban sites reveals that homogenisation of bird communities can occur even at higher altitudes (>1400m a.s.l.). The results indicated that native montane birds communities are sensitive to habitat loss and degradation. Thus, any development in the highlands must proceed with minimal disturbance to montane forests, of which, keeping the canopy cover intact should be a crucial consideration.

From the author: Woodpeckers (family Picidae) are widely distributed and have been documented as participants in mixed species flocks in both temperate and tropical regions. However, they usually are not considered frequent flock participants, and the presence of multiple species of woodpeckers participating simultaneously in flocks is virtually undocumented. We determined the frequency of this association for the six most common woodpecker species at Pasoh Forest Reserve, West Malaysia. During the two-month study period, woodpeckers participated regularly in flocks with other woodpecker species, including congeners. Observations of multiple species of woodpeckers participating in foraging flocks in other parts of Malaysia, as well as Thailand and Indonesia, suggest that this might be a regular occurrence in Southeast Asia.
