In all, there are over sixty destinations, which can make for a magnificent safari for house watchers on the streets of Charleston, or just a delightful read for the armchair traveler.

A Beauty!.......2002-09-14

Part history, part travel guide, and part photo essay, this lovely book would be wonderful for anyone traveling to Charleston or for an armchair traveler like myself. I loved it, especially the gorgeous photos of the interiors and exteriors of the historic buildings (mansions, churches, small homes, museums,etc.) that a visitor would see on a walking tour of the city.

Beney managed to capture all of the legendary charm of this beautiful city with his camera while giving the reader quite a bit of historic information.

My only complaint is that the author put the map of Charleston in the back of the book and I did not realize it was there ---a map would have been helpful while I was talking my "tour"!

Ellen Auerbach is a remarkable New York artist, honored in 1998 (at the age of 92) with an important exhibit of her photographs at Berlin's prestigious Academie der Kunst. Ellen Auerbach: Berlin, Tel Aviv, London, New York, the exhibition catalog, traces her trajectory through the century with photos she took between 1929 and 1965.

Some of her early images (created with studio partner Grete Stern) have a surrealist tinge. In 1933, Auberbach, a German Jew, fled to Palestine, where her photos captured the monumentality of landscape and the heroic power of childhood. One image, "Beach Near Tel Aviv 1934," shows a small boy standing proudly looking at a line of camels in the distance, reduced by the perspective to a string of toy-sized animals.

In 1937, Auerbach moved to America, though her view of her new homeland was apparently never rosy-eyed--a 1939 image depicts a framed photo of the Statue of Liberty in a junk shop, with a partly obliterated sign that reads "WE BUY" above it. However, her photos of American children showed increasing power and drama: a 1940 image, "Great Spruce Head Island, Maine," captures four kids looking out to sea, their body postures as harmonic and powerful as the famous combat photo "The Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima." Another picture, "Robbie 1964," depicts a small boy looking out to sea with the solitary strength of a figure painted by Winslow Homer. Auerbach made photos of unassertive grandeur and emotional power, and her recognition in America is long overdue. Congratulations to Prestel for publishing this excellent book. --Benjamin Ivry

Jeff Brodsky has brought forth out of his inmost being the very essence and heart of a father. Stepping Into Adulthood explores the fragile, yet incalculably vital connection between fathers and their children. This link, this bond between generations, is staggering in its effect on each one of us, and when it is absent or severed, the damage to our entire personhood is profound.

Jeff has called us back to some very ancient and foundational roots which speak to the very core of our perception of self-worth, and value. Without the affirmation and connection to our fathers, we suffer immeasurably, and every one of our relationships suffer. I cannot too highly recommend this book and the message it carries!

Through my friendship with Jeff over the years, I have seen the effect of this teaching in my own family. Jeff presided over the "Stepping Into Adulthood" ceremonies that we provided for my own teenage son and daughter. I have read the book, "Stepping into Adulthood" by Jeff Brodsky and released quite a bit of the teaching into my church. The aspects that have been particularly helpful have been the parts that deal with a child's identity and destiny. These chapters answer the questions of "Why am I here?; Where am I going?; What is my purpose?"

Also of importance is the chapter on the Rite of Passage into adulthood. This provides a spiritual as well as a practical reason to celebrate Adulthood. The book also gives helpful encouragement and tools to parents to accept the responsibilities of their role in releasing blessing upon their children.

Great book on the Nighthawk.......2003-08-11

This is a great book. In keeping with the high standard set by his book on the SR 71, author Crickmore offers many great photos and personal accounts of pilots and people involved. In both books he seems to have an extraordinary access and insight into the people and machines of the "black world". In addition to anecdotes, this book contains many technical insights and explanations, to really involve you in the plane and it's story. For any military or aviation nut like myself, this book is a particular treat. I was extremely happy with this book, and wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. Also try his excellent book on the SR 71.

There are alot of books on the F-117A Nighthawk, and most are repetative. The older books rehash the same old story and contain the same old pictures. Yancy Mailes and Tony Landis have broken new ground with more fascinating facts about this great warbird and never before published pictures and artwork in their concise (108 pages), but awesome "photo scrapbook." This new material comes from people who were actually involved with the most difficult flight test program in aviation history - the developers, testers, pilots, and maintainers. Also contains great pictures and artwork of Northrop's XST and TACIT BLUE prototypes, and Lockheed's ATB SENIOR PEG entry and the F-117N design for the U.S. Navy. THIS IS THE BOOK THAT F-117A NIGHTHAWK ENTHUSIASTS HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! Do yourself a favor and pick up this outstanding book!

As an F-117A enthusiest I recomend this book 110%. Not only does the book have over 170 patches pictured (99% in full color), but it has most of the designers, years, and reasons for the patch design listed. Not only does the book cover F-117A program patches, but older F-117A USAF Patches and Lockheed Skunk Works Patches also. This book has been a valuable resource for me as an enthusiest.

Great history of the F-117A from a personal level!.......1999-07-31

If you like the F-117A, Military Patches, or both, then you have to have this book. Having worked on the F-117A program, this book gives a lot of information not found elsewhere. This book is a must for all F-117A enthusiasts. Many of my peers have already bought this book and the Skunk Works' company store has sold out. Get it while you can.
