Between 1951 and 1957, a group of young men came to teach at the University of Texas School of Architecture in Austin. These "Texas Rangers," as they later came to be called - Bernhard Hoesli, Colin Rowe, John Hejduk, Robert Slutzky, Lee Hodgden, John Shaw, and Werner Seligmann, among others - created an unprecedented teaching program that challenged the important pedagogies of the time, and that contained in large part the origins and explanations for a postmodern revolution in architecture. Ten years in the making, Alexander Caragonne's lively, fully illustrated story documents one of the most significant chapter in the history of postwar American architectural education.

Challenging the anti-intellectual tendencies both of the pragmatic, regionalist American tradition and of the modernist pedagogy inspired by the Bauhaus, the new curriculum proposed that a workable, useful body of architectural theory could be derived from an ongoing critique of significant buildings and projects across history and cultures. Visualization and organization of architectural space was emphasized over the shaping of mass, along with the recognition and development of the architectural idea. Gestalt psychological concepts for evaluating and describing architectural form and space were encouraged, and the value of historical precedent in the design process recognized.

Caragonne pulls together the disparate strands of a program - a critique of a mainstream architectural culture and education - that has for many years remained a kind of dimly perceived underground. Figuring largely in his account are the mythical figure of Colin Rowe and Bernhard Hoesli, whose collaboration provided the intellectual basis of the new curriculum. Caragonne, who witnessed the events as an undergraduate in the School of Architecture, describes Rowe's background and his reintroduction of architectural history into the design studio. He also provides a detailed analysis of the teaching program and its subsequent influence on architectural education and thought.

a wonderful gift book for peace lovers.......2004-02-29

I don't have this book with me, or I would write a more detailed review, but when I found it had no reviews at all here, I couldn't keep silent. This little book of Pontius Puddle cartoons has many of the classic strips of this series, which appears in several Anabaptist and Quaker magazines. For a preview, go to Joel's Web site. The cartoons are both sweet and sharp, gently prodding readers toward a deeper meditation on peace, nonviolence, evangelism, discipleship, and ... humor.

Using a catalog of seven agency problem identifier variables such as block ownership and market segment traded in, 237 German industrial stock corporations are analyzed for the time period 1986-1992. Five sectors are also analyzed separately. Agency-problem related differences in financial behavior, performance, and cost efficiency are tested for using t-tests for mean differences and logistic regressions. The cost efficiency is estimated via stochastic maximum likelihood frontier functions. Manager-controlled firms prefer free cash flows as predicted. Owners favor debt and avoid new stock issues. Contrary to theory, manager-controlled companies do not show a poorer performance than owner-controlled firms. They do, however, operate more inefficiently than firms controlled by owners.

Helpful book in real business world.......2000-05-07

As a non-native English speaker, I found this book to be very helpful in my day to day work. As I am working in a big MNC in Hong Kong, I have frequent interactions with people from different parts of the world, of which many of them are native English speaker. This book provides me a helpful guideline in writing day-to-day business memos, letters and email. My boss even said that she was really impressed about how I have improved in business writing. May be the only problem of this book is because of its length. However, I would have no doubt in recommendating this book to those who needs to write in English during their day to day job, especially those non-native speakers.

Although the subtitle of this baby-name book is Real Advice from Real Parents Who Have Named their Babies and Lived to Tell About It, the true value of the book is more traditional. It's a list, or rather a set of lists, and, although that's a crowded playing field, this book holds up well, offering highly detailed and multicultural food for thought. Take a small chunk from the letter T at random and you'll find, for example: Tawqeer (Arabic for honor); Tayib (Indic for delicate or good); Tayon (unknown meaning); Tayor (unknown meaning); Taysean (unknown meaning); Teague (Gaelic/Irish for poet); Tearle (Old English for serious, austere); Teclo (Greek for divine). The next name is Ted, but you get the point--nobody is going to look through this much information and complain that there must be more. A useful feature is the "Baby Name Finder" index, split into alphabetical headings such as "3 Syllables," "Ethnic-Swedish," and "Lakes and Rivers." Interesting spelling and different grouping of names , but there is a lacking of meanings that can be found in other baby names books. Although there are lacings in this book there are good names and groupings.

Parent Soup - you have done it! What a great "tool" to help with finding the perfect name! The category lists were a marvelous idea - everything from the standard lists (boy or girl names) to unisex names, ethnic names, and even how many syllables a name contains.

My favorite parts of the book were the tips given by parents like me, who have been through it all - from how to handle giving your child a name that has been passed down in the family to which spelling to use for a certain name. These parents offer up their best advice to help you make the big name decision.

We had so much fun with this book as a family! My children really enjoyed looking up the meanings of their names, and even talked about what they might name their own children someday. I got the chance to tell each of my children again why we had chosen their names, giving them a little more insight into who they are.

I am giving a copy to an expecting friend as a shower gift. I think she and her husband will have a great time trying to find just the "right" name for their new baby. Thank you Parent Soup for putting this together with the help of your members!

I Wish This Book Had Been Available To Me Long Ago!.......1998-12-15

Parent Soup's Baby Name Finder is much more than lists of name possibilities. This book deals with the real issues that many parents face when considering names for their bundles of joy. Real parents from Parent Soup's online parenting community give tips on how to handle such issues as "dealing with flak from family and friends" and how to determine if you have a "keeper". The tips are not preachy; they only offer several opinions that all parents will want to consider.

And those lists are fabulous! This book offers 42 lists in which to categorize names. If you want a Welsh name that has three syllables, you can find several here! You can even find out how your child's name ranks on a popularity scale. Did you know that Tatiana is one of the 50 most popular girls' names of the 90's?

My children thoroughly enjoyed looking their names up and learning about the ethnic origin associated with those names. Some were thrilled to find out that they had popular names, while others thought it was cool that their names were more "unique".

This book should be in every family's personal library. What a great resource for children when they have to do that inevitable report on the history of their names. And what a wondeful gift for soon-to-be parents. This book is just plain fun to read. It offers down-to-earth advice from "real" parents just like all of us.

many names, questionable categorizations.......1998-12-01

Coming from a swiss/german background I can't but add to the previous reviewer's comments. Apart from the anglo-saxon mainstream the book offers little insight. I've found at least one instance of each of the following errors: 1) names sometimes carry alternate spellings that sound very similar, but are variants of a different name 2) names that are obvious variants of each other are listed separately without cross-reference 3) the ethnic categories, as far as I could tell are often questionable and in some cases plain wrong 4) at least for my ethnic background, the selection of names seems rather odd, and many names only appear in short forms 5) meanings of greek/latin names are often inaccurate Bottomline: If you are looking for some inspiration, the book is ok. It carries a wide ethnic variety of names. However if you're interested in a particular area such as nordic names, you may be disappointed or even worse, misguided.

Very detailed and organized account.......2001-03-08

This is quite a different memoir from others I have read. Worsham, who appears to have been a tremendously organized individual, gives minute tactical detail relevant to his company for almost every engagement he was in -- the Valley Campaign, First Winchester, Kernstown, Williamsport, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, etc. etc. As far as I can tell, he's generally pretty accurate, with the exception of the end of Third Winchester, during which he was wounded and not on the field. (He was disabled from then till the surrender and was left behind in Richmond when the city fell.) Worsham also follows up the fate of his company and of many of its members, giving a useful picture of what happened to the many people who left their original units during the war. I wish authors of regimental histories, in particular Reidenbaugh, would learn from this! On the other hand, Worsham's account is rather lacking in personal information, to the point where he quite often refers to himself in the third person. He had a very good career, being steadily promoted through first sergeant and to adjutant, but tells us rather little about this. His memoir is short on the sort of amusing or touching anecdotes that fill many other accounts. Because of that, this might not be the most congenial memoir for someone who just wants something fun to read, but its value to the historian is inestimable.

As the study of cooperative breeding systems expands, a number of key species form the examples that underpin our general understanding. The ostrich is increasingly becoming such a textbook species, on the basis of the results obtained in Brian Bertram's study of vigilance and egg discrimination in this extraordinary bird. Here Bertram presents new data on the ostrich communal nesting system, in which several females lay in one female's nest, with only one female and the male doing all the work. The Ostrich Communal Nesting System unravels the basis of the cooperation observed, and explains how a system involving apparent altruism is maintained by natural selection. It is now possible as never before to explain and quantify the effects of the different choices these birds make and to integrate ecological and morphological factors such as predation and size. Based on three seasons of study in Tsavo West National Park in Kenya, this book depended on recognizing individual birds, detecting and monitoring well-concealed nests, determining motherhood of eggs from their surface appearance, and time-lapse photography of nests. Key findings were that females could switch rapidly between reproductive strategies, that a nesting female could recognize her own eggs and when necessary discriminate against those of other females, and that the whiteness of ostrich eggs is an adaptation that protects them against overheating but at the cost of greater vulnerability to predation.
