Not your kids Tree House.......2005-08-14
There are an awful lot of 'pretty house' books out there. Some of them offering quite unusual house designs. But nothing I've ever seen compares with the designs in this book. ==I've seen houses built on poles because they are located in a flood plain. Of course the Swiss Family Robinson and the Ewoks of StarWars fame lived in tree houses. I had one as a kid, and when my daughter came along, she had one (she could pull up the ladder and keep her brother out).
In this book however professional architects from all over Europe, Tasmania, and the U.S have been used to design houses that live up in trees. The houses are mostly not the entire living structure but are offices, retreats, studios, and some of the most exciting entertainment areas imaginable. The results are unbelievably striking.
The integration of the advanced design with the natural look of the trees gives a feeling of working together that I wouldn't have expected. This is true if the tree house is ultra modern, traditional, or some that I guess I'd just call unconventional. A surprising book.

In A Question of Numbers, Michael Teitelbaum and Jay Winter concentrate on the other end of this equation: the fear of population decline. Focusing on the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Britain, Yugoslavia, Russia, and Romania between the years 1965 and 1995, the authors look at how a mix of low fertility rates and a steady influx of immigrants have affected each country's national identity. When political upheaval and internal demographic shifts occur in tandem with increased immigration, the transformations can be both explosive and permanent. The results range from the backlash in the U.S. (particularly toward incoming Mexicans) that fueled new state laws denying immigrants health and welfare benefits to the horrific examples of "ethnic cleansing" in the ravaged Balkans. Though each nation examined here is has experienced a unique set of problems and circumstances, enough parallels exist to give the authors' ideas a global relevance.
Though a serious and thoughtful book, A Question of Numbers is not a dry read. The authors rely more heavily on historical and political anecdotes than charts and statistics, and they strive for clear and impartial analysis of a subject often obscured by self-serving politicians and alarmists.

Could it Be Any Worse?.......2006-09-25
If the facts don't fit, make up some facts! This book isn't about militias, it's about white supremecy organizations. I guess he used the word militia in the title to attract sales of this piece of garbage to bedwetters. The first chapter is about Randy Weaver (Ruby Ridge) and there's plenty of made up facts in there to get his misconceived point across. It's all down hill from there. Anyone who believes the nonsense he spews is many apples short of a full tree.

this book is total and utter trash. not even worth ripping out the pages and burning to keep yourself warm. Very poorly written so it is a chore to sit through the whole thing including all of the hate-filled rhetoric. I have to assume some militia guy cut him off in traffic and he got really pissed off or so it seems from reading this heap of poop.
For all his lies about militias being angry white bigots hiding behind every bush to do every evil he seems to of forgotten about all the BLACK militiamen out there.
And guess what. Kenneth Stern writes these books and has his hand out looking for money to protect you from these militiamen who are your brothers, fathers, friends and family. OF ALL COLORS AND RACES KENNETH STERN! GET IT?

Anyone who understands anything about the militia movement in america first knows that the american militia is not limited to a bunch of white hicks living in the woods. The american militia represents over 80 million lawfully armed citizens from every walk of life. For once Id like to see a completed work on the diversity and common purpose of this group as a whole and not such writings as this which is a feeble attempt to play upon the fears of people and make a buck in the process.

I bought this book because I had heard that I was written up in it. Sure enough, there were two different places that I came up in the book. In both places I was "quoted" with no source to back up the "quote" and all the quotes were total fabrication by either the author or whomever the author used for his "source". I was NEVER the head of an un-organized or organized militia in Stevens County, and the only presentation that I did at the Colville Grange was an invocation. Apparently SOMEONE who is pretty liberal is trying to make folks in the public believe something that just is not so. And then of course there is the author who OBVIOUSLY has a bone to pick with anyone who doesn't go along with the status quo of statism and ra ra ra the government loves us retoric that is being shoved down our throats. Too bad some of the "quotes" that were attributed to me, didn't actually happen!

Stern's book does in journalistic fashion detail some of the "events" that have occured recently related to this fuzzy group known as the militia. However I would agree with most other reviewers here that this work proceeds from the desire to further alienate the already alienated and offers little in the way of allowing the reader to understand this phenomena. I'd recommend Dyer's Harvest of Rage for an understanding of this issue.
